- Hi all,
This week, I’m finally sharing with you what I’ve been doing to get ready for our gravel driveway.
(If you want to see sooner updates, then I share constantly on my Instagram page: / thecarpenters_daughter )
You might be wondering why we’ve opted for this? Well, it’s cheap, doesn’t need planning permission as it’s permeable and it’s easier than slabs or block paving.

Ladies power yes yes 🙌 and yes. Men argue that they are the best to do DIY but women are equally capable. Well done a true example 👌 of will power.
Big job. Lots of work. Great results. Two tools I use for small scale excavation and awkward areas/edges/corners, are: a brickies hand pick, so more pointy ends for penetration; and a Roughneck hand mattock, smallest handle length, and ends like a full-size pick but smaller. Handy when working off a kneeling mat, or when you need to take care of what you are working around; lots of tool control. For breaking up concrete and such, a Titan SDS has always done the job. Enjoyed watching the video, good presentation
Flipping brill. Girl you rock!
Great work, inspiring stuff!! LOVE the dog too!
Great videos, just what I needed. To share a tip use a thick elastic band to attach a line to the pegs, so there is some "give" if you accidentally catch the line.
Your house looks like my dream house!!Nice job!
Transformation looks great it's coming along nicely
Thanks so much :D ;)
Lovely! Driveway looks good too
I bought a Titan breaker from Screwfix. It was £150, I have used it lots of times and lent it to my neighbour as well. It has paid for itself already.
Love watching your diy channel Vicki x
Thank you Lisa :) Hope you're well xxx
Great job . Watching and enjoying all your projects. Keep up the good work. Have a good Christmas.
+Ronald Wilkinson Thanks! Hope you had a great one too 😀
Hans is a gorgeous dog!
That looked back-breaking. Well done.
Thanks Andy :) Surprisingly it wasn't too bad as I spread it over a few days, but definitely needed music and podcasts in the background to keep me from getting bored lol
Wow that’s a lot of work! Digging shovelling -and editing too! Looking forward to part 2 8;^)
Thanks Robbie. It's definitely a very rewarding process! :D
Good job! Your good little worker well done 👍 I like your dog sitting in the skip lol
Thanks :D I don't know why, but he was good as gold in there :) He does like spying on people.. maybe he felt secure :)
Nice to know you've been careful around your 'manhole' 😃
You're a warrior, Congratulations, it's getting Great.
+Luciano J.D.S cheers 😊👍
I think most of us have all been there at some point, I'm now at the age where id rather hire in diggers etc to save my back lol good job and look forward to part 2 👍
+Bruno B yes, I think so too for anything like this is the future 😊
Bloody great. With a gal like this, nothing would be impossible. Good work, love. X
Another great video, nothing more satisfying than completing your own DIY project. The only problem I find is that you doing something for the first time and by the time you finish you become an expert at it, but then you can see were you made mistakes and know that if you where to do it it a game you’d do some things slightly different, really annoying when that happens. Lol. Xx
+Dave 1976 haha, so true!! But the mistakes help to understand the process much more 😊 particularly if you ever need to do it again 😀
hard work for two of ye . great job. love all nice work you do.:)
Thank you +Hughie Neary 😊
Can’t wait for part 2
Thanks again +Tracy Keenan 😀
“I had to be careful with my manhole”
I laugh at the silliest things I swear 😂😂
Lol... my father in law said I should have called it a woman hole 😜🤣
your not the only one it made me giggle too.i like it when people try to do things themselves you get more job satisfaction,on to part two...
Here is a carpenters trick for breaking metal bands like the one you used a hacksaw to remove. Slide the band between the tines (claw) of your hammer then push the hammer in the opposite direction it is laying this will break the band. From a California carpenter love your channel.
Thanks for the tip :)
Or just use a pair of tin snips (Aviation snips).
love your dog in the skip, great progress, don't let anyone put you off by saying "you wouldn't be capable", just prove them wrong.
Haha +Phil Cannon Woodworking, he's a little rascal lol and thanks, I hope I can 😀
😮 OMG!!! I had no idea laying gravel required this much work and time 😫 Looks like I will just lay grass down instead 🤷🏾♀️😔
Really enjoy your videos they inspire me and your a lovely person too. Just would like to mention the weedkiller only works if your spraying weeds rather than spraying the ground.
Thank you. I had wondered about that!
Beautifully shaped man -hole. 💪😂
The work and technical advice are both useful and inspiring! Landscaping paradise. 👨🏽🌾
🙏🏽☮️👍
Have the membrane down first then get type 1 delivered and cutt bottom of bags in sitch. Saves you all the shoveling.... Good job 👍
Always be careful around the manhole - I could not have put it better. Wish my Mrs was as enthusiastic at doing some hard labour. Good video, and much appreciated. althoug what is going on with so many people out on the street
Thanks :) Oh, that footage was from the annual festival we have here in our village.
Looking great! A lot of work but worth it 👌
Thanks +Average Joe's Joinery 😊 and so much tidier already 😁
Looking good Hun and you look freezing and knackered get that kettle on ☕️
Thanks :) I am definitely ready for a Christmas break ;)
I am impressed.
Thanks!
looks better already well done regards Mike
+mickymost thank you Mike 😊
Should've hired a digger, they're fun & completely safe, don't let people talk you out of things, you learn by cracking on & doing it, you don't learn by reading books 😋
Thank you :) I totally agree! Hopefully I'll get to take a stab at one some day.
The Carpenter's Daughter if they weren't safe, they wouldn't be able to manufacture them, if you're not sure, just get someone to guide you, like your Dad or someone who's either used one before or someone you trust would be able to do it themselves. I'd come guide you..... If I weren't about 200 mile away Lol 😋
Thanks +Bazza B. I almost called Jewsons if they wanted to show me for a plug haha.. their head office isn't that far but I thought, why would even they bother?! lol
The Carpenter's Daughter If you don't ask you'll never know ! Lol
So true!! I'll have to keep reminding myself. It would be great way to keep learning new things :)
I'm lovin' the accent as well as all the other stuff: "You'll probably say I took a scenic route, and I dog it all op..." (at about 3:44)
Just outstanding :o)
+ilookafter thewater sounds like pure Yorkshire to me 😉😄
Very helpful. Thanks.
Any time 😀
I congratulate you on your hard work. I wonder what would Eric Barker think of this?
Beautiful dog
That’s a lot of work. 😳 Damn fine job! FYI, to kill grasses and weeds try vinegar, water and dish soap. The vinegar will kill everything and no worries about pets, children or the environment. It’s a Texas thang...
Thank you for the tip! 😀
Yes but it grows back?
big up from middle of france. you did well
Thanks and hello to France :) :) :)
How deep are your layers? What depth of hardcore did you use and what depth of gravel? Ever thought about using the plastic grids for retaining the gravel or were you not too worried about movement because the area isn’t on a slope?
Absolutely love the channel! Great video, I’m doing a stoned area in my back garden but the area has an original layer of sand rather than soil. Thoughts on just putting the membrane down and then the hardcore on top? Do you think it’ll be okay?
I love that dog.
😄
Looks like hard work ... I shall be going with a contractor
Great video 😊
Thanks :)
Great job Vikki, you definitely need to be careful round your man hole 😉
😆 It had crossed my mind when I heard it back 😂😇
My ears did a double take when I heard that. :-o Thought I also heard a near-laugh or wobble in your narration as well. :-D
Looking forward to Part 2.
Lol, I may have almost laughed... I can't remember lol. My father in law said I should start calling it a womanhole... I don't know which one's worse :D :D
Nah, didn't hear a wobble... 😂 I have to delete a lot of possible innuendos. I'd keep some of them in, but I think it'd be a slippery slope haha
Good to see a woman having a go
Hiya, do you remember how deep your type 1 layer was and how deep the gravel layer was? Everyone I ask keeps giving conflicting answers and advice. Thank you :)
Yeh....I'm always careful around my 'man hole' 🤣
Stubborn buggers? Good to see you kept you 'manhole' clear😉
😆
Hi, how many bulk bags of sub base did you use in total?
I feel shattered just watching all that. Blimey.
+CruisingTheCut I definitely am shattered 😄😄
What sub base did you use?
You will still have to pull weeds even though you have the fabric down. The fabric will prevent the roots from going too deep and they will be much easier to get out. The most important function of the weed fabric is that it will prevent the stone base from migrating into the soil below.
Thanks for sharing :)
The weed block fabric in my garden tends to look like a growth medium for grass and thistle. Honestly makes them harder to pull out but it does separate the dirt from the top dressing
The second type of weed membrane that you used is much better. The fabric type you laid first tends to rot after a couple of years, the plastic material lasts longer
I agree about the other stuff being better 😁
I'd love to know what weed killer you used, as all I've managed to buy is a Glyphosate Weedkiller that only acts on green growth, with NO persisting effect to deter new weed growth.
Sodium Chlorate (which IS a persistent herbicide) doesn't appear to be available now.
Good job
Thanks again ;) :)
Good effort, been building a studio in the garden, its back breaking work, especially on your own. As for the comments on the digger, you could have done it,
Thank you :) Sometimes it's hard to figure out if someone's trying to get paid work out of you or not by putting you off. Obviously if depends who you ask, but hopefully I give it a go in future. A back garden studio sounds cool! :)
Its when they look at what your doing and start teeth sucking and then saying and quoting regulations and how to do it, its like a passive way of saying hire me. Its really annoying.
Totally! It really is annoying and offends me when I''ve spent most of my adult life managing in retail. I can usually hear pressure sales a mile off.
1:28 too cold .. Nope!
Weed killer doesn’t do much.
Screwfix breaker is very good.
Deffo get a digger and you should have got a grab hire truck to take all the concrete and soil away. They can carry alot more than a skip and are cheaper because the skip charges based on general (mixed) waste.
Thanks for the tips :)
What's a manhole for?
My new home has no driveway. I want something I can do myself. I'm stubborn like my grandfather who always told me "don't pay for something you can do yourself." I have 2 vehicles. A pick up truck and a new sedan. Parking on the street makes me very nervous. I also plan on clearing out some foliage growing wild in the back of the property and fencing in the back for my pups. That I may not do myself as if it fails my dogs will be lost and they are trouble makers.
Your a awesome worker and a awesome woman.
+william suttle thanks so much 😊💪👍
The Carpenter's Daughter your welcome.
*you're. The contraction of you are. As in you're illiterate.
Can't wait till see the end result. Granite?
Oooh, still not sure yet :D We haven't had time this weekend, so try some photoshopping on Tuesday:)
The Carpenter's Daughter Looking forwards to it. We uploaded videos on the same day, though my 37 subscribers can't be counted as competition 😂😂😂
It's one of the best days;) Will have to check it out :D
Of interest to you perhaps? m.ruclips.net/video/bycmGy6FN-k/видео.html
Could hire a stone breaker, and use the concrete for sub base.Cost, and availibility, might mean, not worth while.
Your doing a great job
Thanks :)
*you're. The contraction of you are. It really isn't difficult. Intelligent people are laughing at you when you get it wrong.
Get your gloves on 🤔☹️👌hire a concrete breaker and hire a mini digger. Job would of been a lot easier 😀
Would've. Learn to properly talk/spell english ( advice from a "foreigner".)
Why would you want to cut down the trees seems like it would help with road noise
Wow 4:21
I'm sure many subscribers are careful around their manholes lol
so does it get the approval of your four legged son?
awesome video.
Ooh, I hope so :) He does keep weeing on it... wonder what that means 😆
he is marking it as his own.
You could drive a digger no worries.
Wouldn’t sub base have been cheaper and easier if it has been tipped loose onto the membrane?
I don't think anyone local offered that, otherwise I would have gone with it :D Like to keep costs down to a minimum.
The Carpenter's Daughter ok ok . Always cheaper loose by the ton ! Great channel btw !
look's like hard work. XD
:D Don't really fancy doing it again (at least manually), that's for sure lol
Have you had an interest, in construction for a long time
Not really. I've always been impressed seeing my parents turn around a home renovation within a matter of 2 or 3 months while growing up though.
I'm not sure I would've got in to anything like this if we hadn't bought our own house, but have always been creative.
Who are all those people outside your house?
Lol, it's old footage from the annual village festival.
You busted up a paved driveway to replace it with gravel?
Yes, because it was really tatty and needed more room for our vehicles 😏
Funny, I had the same decision recently but elected to keep the concrete sections and cover them with gravel! Very tatty section that needed to be covered or removed.
1 part water, 2 to 3 parts vinegar, a dash of dish soap and 60 plus degrees Fahrenheit. Hell, it might kill everything if it’s colder. Vinegar does not discriminate, plus it’s safe for children and pets.
Thank you! That sounds perfect for the permeable silver sand in our patio gaps for any tiny weed seedlings some times come up.
Your the perfect partner, I. Could do with your help I need to do the same
Good video but no wheelbarrow in sight , it would of saved you back.
Great video but with a 360 machine if you have never used or had experience do not use this is why you need to have a licence
I have seen to many accidents it’s not good to endorse to any one guts is not experience sorry to be so judgemental .
And it’s always good to cat scan the ground for any services before any digging. All said and done great videos
Thank you. You've made me feel I did the right thing by doing it slowly and manually.
What licence? Been driving 360s for the last 10 years and nobody told me I need a licence.... But on the cat scanner note, yeah, if there's a chance of services it's not a self-hire driver job. Pulling through an HV cable isn't for the faint of heart haha.
Daniel Roe Hi not sure but you must be on private land .hire your self out to house owners not contract work you will be not aloud on any regulated building site unless cpcs and Norps competent there are courses you can take Hi Daniel it was just trying to make people aware of the dangers with out prior experience and knowledge and the correct training .there are other trading providers but not recognise by most registered building sites or HSE I was on sites for years and I then done a lot of private work and you are right you do not need a licence but as soon as you charge for work you must have public liability insurance and also if you hire a machine the hire shop will require certain proof of cover any way hope this covers a little bit on this all the best kind regards David
David Brewer No, I'm on sites. Mostly marine civils. And from what I've seen there is no replacement for hours in a seat and just having a go. Cpcs (which I have but have never needed) and Npors are a joke. A competentcy test which only tests loading a dumpers, tracking up a small bump and pulling a trench is not making well rounded operators, it's making what we call 'seat covers'.
Iv always said to people, if you've got the space, fairly even ground, have a go, it's better than a spade. With regards to hired in plant insurance, plenty of the hire firms round me now offer it along side the machine.
Daniel Roe Hi so you did know there were compentc test well it was not much difference than citb
But I am all for some one trying as you say on level ground but that was not what I was originally talking about this video so I do agree with having experience but not IN this lady case do you agree kind regards David
... and you hired a skip rather than post an on-line advert for free hardcore for anyone who'd cart it away?
Funny you should said say that.... that's exactly what we did and no one wanted it.
Switched off at the weed killer. Wow, all that lovely poison in the ground water ... Will still be there 50 years hence. Wonder how your animals will feel about that. And the neighbours. And your kids ... Do you not know you that if you absolutely must kill weeds (a lot of them are perfectly nutritious edibles), you can just spray them with vinegar?
Waste of weed killer. Spraying bare ground is useless.
V. disappointed!!! No dance moves during the outro. Hopefully next time.....?
Apart from that, a very inspiring girl-power video.
I'm saving that for when I've completely finished the job :D :D :D
Awwww!! I was hoping for a "bustin' the moves" insert at the end of *EVERY* vid from now on. OK, finish the job and I'll hold you to that promise....
It might be "A woman's touch" by Calamity Jane though next hahaha
Very appropriate. Waiting with bated breath.....
STOP using weed killer --- it's toxic -- not good for you, the dog, the environment -- I detest those pesticides.
Crap
