  • Hi all,
    This week, I’m finally sharing with you what I’ve been doing to get ready for our gravel driveway.
    (If you want to see sooner updates, then I share constantly on my Instagram page: / thecarpenters_daughter )
    You might be wondering why we’ve opted for this? Well, it’s cheap, doesn’t need planning permission as it’s permeable and it’s easier than slabs or block paving.

    Big job. Lots of work. Great results. Two tools I use for small scale excavation and awkward areas/edges/corners, are: a brickies hand pick, so more pointy ends for penetration; and a Roughneck hand mattock, smallest handle length, and ends like a full-size pick but smaller. Handy when working off a kneeling mat, or when you need to take care of what you are working around; lots of tool control. For breaking up concrete and such, a Titan SDS has always done the job. Enjoyed watching the video, good presentation

    Great videos, just what I needed. To share a tip use a thick elastic band to attach a line to the pegs, so there is some "give" if you accidentally catch the line.

    Another great video, nothing more satisfying than completing your own DIY project. The only problem I find is that you doing something for the first time and by the time you finish you become an expert at it, but then you can see were you made mistakes and know that if you where to do it it a game you’d do some things slightly different, really annoying when that happens. Lol. Xx

    Here is a carpenters trick for breaking metal bands like the one you used a hacksaw to remove. Slide the band between the tines (claw) of your hammer then push the hammer in the opposite direction it is laying this will break the band. From a California carpenter love your channel.

  • @IanVanMann
    @IanVanMann 4 года назад

    What sub base did you use?

  • @drooplug
    @drooplug 6 лет назад

    You will still have to pull weeds even though you have the fabric down. The fabric will prevent the roots from going too deep and they will be much easier to get out. The most important function of the weed fabric is that it will prevent the stone base from migrating into the soil below.

    • @TheCarpentersDaughterUK

      Thanks for sharing :)

    • @StreetMachine18
      @StreetMachine18 6 лет назад +1

      The weed block fabric in my garden tends to look like a growth medium for grass and thistle. Honestly makes them harder to pull out but it does separate the dirt from the top dressing

  • @whiterhino5027
    @whiterhino5027 5 лет назад +1

    The second type of weed membrane that you used is much better. The fabric type you laid first tends to rot after a couple of years, the plastic material lasts longer

    • @TastefullyVikkie
      @TastefullyVikkie 5 лет назад

      I agree about the other stuff being better 😁

  • @martinmorgan9
    @martinmorgan9 9 месяцев назад

    I'd love to know what weed killer you used, as all I've managed to buy is a Glyphosate Weedkiller that only acts on green growth, with NO persisting effect to deter new weed growth.
    Sodium Chlorate (which IS a persistent herbicide) doesn't appear to be available now.

    Deffo get a digger and you should have got a grab hire truck to take all the concrete and soil away. They can carry alot more than a skip and are cheaper because the skip charges based on general (mixed) waste.

  • @morbjrn5265

    My new home has no driveway. I want something I can do myself. I'm stubborn like my grandfather who always told me "don't pay for something you can do yourself." I have 2 vehicles. A pick up truck and a new sedan. Parking on the street makes me very nervous. I also plan on clearing out some foliage growing wild in the back of the property and fencing in the back for my pups. That I may not do myself as if it fails my dogs will be lost and they are trouble makers.

    1 part water, 2 to 3 parts vinegar, a dash of dish soap and 60 plus degrees Fahrenheit. Hell, it might kill everything if it’s colder. Vinegar does not discriminate, plus it’s safe for children and pets.

    I have seen to many accidents it’s not good to endorse to any one guts is not experience sorry to be so judgemental .

      Daniel Roe Hi not sure but you must be on private land .hire your self out to house owners not contract work you will be not aloud on any regulated building site unless cpcs and Norps competent there are courses you can take Hi Daniel it was just trying to make people aware of the dangers with out prior experience and knowledge and the correct training .there are other trading providers but not recognise by most registered building sites or HSE I was on sites for years and I then done a lot of private work and you are right you do not need a licence but as soon as you charge for work you must have public liability insurance and also if you hire a machine the hire shop will require certain proof of cover any way hope this covers a little bit on this all the best kind regards David

      David Brewer No, I'm on sites. Mostly marine civils. And from what I've seen there is no replacement for hours in a seat and just having a go. Cpcs (which I have but have never needed) and Npors are a joke. A competentcy test which only tests loading a dumpers, tracking up a small bump and pulling a trench is not making well rounded operators, it's making what we call 'seat covers'.
      Iv always said to people, if you've got the space, fairly even ground, have a go, it's better than a spade. With regards to hired in plant insurance, plenty of the hire firms round me now offer it along side the machine.

    ... and you hired a skip rather than post an on-line advert for free hardcore for anyone who'd cart it away?

    Switched off at the weed killer. Wow, all that lovely poison in the ground water ... Will still be there 50 years hence. Wonder how your animals will feel about that. And the neighbours. And your kids ... Do you not know you that if you absolutely must kill weeds (a lot of them are perfectly nutritious edibles), you can just spray them with vinegar?

    Waste of weed killer. Spraying bare ground is useless.

    STOP using weed killer --- it's toxic -- not good for you, the dog, the environment -- I detest those pesticides.
