  • How tall should you cut the grass in your lawn? I give mowing height recommendations for bermuda, zoysia, centipede, St Augusinte, and even cool season grasses. There are a few things to consider when deciding on a mowing height. One, is the time of year which can affect how fast the grass in growing. Another is how much water the lawn gets. Third, you want to consider how often you are willing to mow the grass. The rule of thumb is to not mow more than 1/3 on the grass blade.

    I have cool season, and a vast majority of people are not mowing at 4". I keep mine at 4" and think it looks great at that height. Stays greener, requires less water, and you don't need to mow as frequently. Almost everyone on my street and neighborhood are mowing short. Don't understand why, as their lawns are all turning brown right now, while mine is green.

    Hi Jason. Bermuda lawn and centipede roadside just like you. I’m just north of Columbus, GA. Love your videos. I’ve been trying to get my Bermuda a little lower. I was cutting it at 2.25”, but I just took it down to 2”. Left it a little scalped in a few spots, but hoping it’ll recover in a week or so. If my lawn was a little more level, I would try 1.75”. Lawn leveling is a little more work and expense than I’m willing to take on. After all, it’s only a lawn, not the back nine at Augusta. Thanks again and keep the lawn videos coming.

    On my 3 acres of centipede/carpet grass mix I do the back yard at 2.5 inches and the front at 3 inches. Due to the unevenness of my front yard I'm fixin to work it back up to 3.5 inches. Usually cut about once every 10 days or so, depending on the rain and my work schedule.

    Bermudagrass needs to be scalped in the spring down to at least a half inch or quarter inch would be best to remove the brown stalks and change the branching height of the crown of the plant. It then needs to be mowed at least twice a week between a half inch and three quarters of an inch for it to look it's best. Not many people are willing to do that, nor do they have a reel mower to even be able to do that, but that's how Bermudagrass is supposed to be maintained.

      right now i'm cutting it at 3.25in with just my toro super recycler. since it's summer already, is it too late to gradually start to bring the height down?

    • @stevenbanks4411
      @stevenbanks4411 3 года назад +1

      @@bloxxieOG nope it's not too late. Honestly if it were me, I would put it on the lowest setting and scalp it down as low as possible to get rid of all that brown stalky junk and then raise it up one notch and keep it at that. It's a lot of work and It's gonna look crappy for a while but it'll look 100 times better once it recovers from the scalp cause it'll just be nice green grass. I would also definetly put some fertilizer out after scalping to help with recovery.

    I was mowing my Bermuda lawn every Wednesday but with the amount of rain AL has been receiving the last 2 weeks it is waaay too wet to mow. I'm in Tuscaloosa, AL and have standing water in my front & back yards.
    After my lawn dries out, what is your recommendation for the length of the first mow? Then set the mower down to the lowest setting again to be a " normal" length? Cut high, then low a few days later if we don't receive any more rain? Would this work and not hurt the lawn.
    I'm not even worrying about fertilizer on the lawn yet for June. I'm afraid it will all wash away into the backyard neighbor's yard and the front street curb and be a waste of time, money and effort.

    I just measured to be accurate and my Zenith Zoysia I planted from seed is about 3 inches with a few blades pushing towards 4 inches, but I've been busy with family and I normally would have mown a few days ago to about 2.5 inches I also just spot treated some crabgrass and sedge and broadleaf weeds so I allowed the grass to grow and not be cut a little longer so the herbicide would have ample time to absorb and do its work.. So normally I mow once a week and I cut off less than 1/3 of the blade length. My Zenith Zoysia is in its second full growing season and it is already extremely thick and dense and like carpet to walk on in most places. I wish it was easy to post photos...I'm not knocking your Zoysia, but my Zenith Zoysia looks a lot more dense than yours which I'm assuming is the type of Zoysia. Zenith is a Zoysia Japonica cultivar/hybrid and it has even pushed out into the gravel area next to the road, even where the ground is extremely compact where the mail carrier drives over it every day. There are some scars that are healing where I sprayed some glyphosate while I 'thought' the Zoysia was dormant, the soil was warmer than I allowed for and I killed several small spots, but they are filling back in, and where the larger spots are I'm transplanting plugs, which I need to do more of. I'm happy to say as far as lawns go, our street has the best lawns in the neighborhood. We're in the transition zone and I have Zoysia which is looking good and thick. My neighbor to my left is a local Parks & Rec employee and he has a nice fescue lawn that he stripes, although he seems to think watering his lawn would cost a lot of money and it doesn't, so at this time of year the heat really stresses his fescue. I have a set of neighbors in their last 70's/early 80's and they have a fairly nice lawn, and the guy two doors down pays a lawn service to do everything for him besides mow, and my neighbor between...he wants a nice lawn, but doesn't do anything to promote a desirable turf, so when I renovate my back lawn, I'll put Zoysia seed along the fence and he'd be thrilled if it spread into his lawn, and I'll transplant plugs on the other side of my driveway and allow them to root and start to spread across his front lawn. And my newest neighbors put a fair amount of work into their lawn and landscaping, but have failed to put down desirable seed so they have a very healthy mix of weeds and multiple desirable grasses. I'm going to have to sit him on the right path of education so he can figure out what he wants. Good video by the way! I subscribed...sorry, I thought I had already subscribed in the past.
