    Lady Lawnmower, you are indeed one of the best! Your videos are consistently straightforward and simple to follow. No lengthy preamble about the weather, arthritis or how the dog is feeling today. Let alone about the wife! And, your English is totally coherent. One doesn't require a translator or captions to compensate for the regional drawls. Thank you again for your informative videos. Thank you very much. I'm so happy I found your video. Your instructions and video were clear and easy to follow. I'm a new homeowner and know nothing about lawnmowers, we bought the lawnmower about 3 years ago and haven't used it much so we haven't performed any maintenance. We pulled it out for the first time since Winter, added fresh gas and it refused to start. I picked up a spark plug and a new filter (the old one was nasty) right after watching your video, rushed home, got them put in, it didn't start right away, so I pushed it back and forth a bit then tried again. It finally started. Thank you again!

    These mowers must have the valves adjusted as part of their tune up. Without that, the mower will either stop, or not start. It's .006" on the intake, and .008" on the exhaust. The tune up is not complete without doing a valve adjustment. Everything else was spot on, except for the valve train tune up procedure, which is essential.

That mower was that clean when I picked it up from her, she takes care of it. She said that crack in the cover was there when she bought it. Sort of confirmed my shipping damage idea. Some 18 y.o. kid at the big box store unpacks these things, installs the handlebar, and really isn't trained to look for damage like this. No one was the wiser as if ran OKish for 5 years or so of her periodic use.

I've watched a few of your "tune-up videos and noticed you never mention cleaning the underside of the deck or sharpening the blade as part of your tune-up. Is this to keep the video short? Thank you, I follow your tune-up method with my same Honda engine on a Troy-Bilt deck every spring but I use a new plug and change the blade too. This year, however, the engine starts first pull every time from cold but is very difficult to restart once fully warmed up (choke open). I can run an entire tank of gas through it, no problem, but if I stop the engine it’s very reluctant to restart. Have you ever encountered this problem before?

    • @TheLawnmowerLady
      @TheLawnmowerLady  3 года назад +5

      Thanks for watching Mr. George! Hard starting while hot is often a sign of a failing ignition coil. Before you go throwing big parts $$ at this machine, there are a few things you can try first.
      1) look inside the spark plug boot at the connector, It should be shiny and no corrosion. If it's rusted, or corroded, there is a slight chance a new spark plug boot can be installed. The plug wire itself is very short, so you would need cut off the rubber boot, rather than just snipping off the wire to preserve as long of a wire as possible. NGK replacement boots are screw on types, you might need to trim off 2-3mm of the wire to get a square cut suitable for the new cap.
      2) pop off the top cover and see if there's any corrosion on the surfaces of the coil and flywheel. Not as common on Hondas as on B/S engines, but if there is an abundance of rust or oxidation on either the faces or the studs that hold the coil in place, try sanding those surfaces. That coil needs a good solid connection to the engine [Ground]
      3) while you are in there, check to see if the gap is still good between the legs of the coil and the magnets on the flywheel. Because one of the coil mounting brackets fits on the same stud that holds the re-coil starter on, it's sometimes easy to get that loose, and then inadvertently, re-tighten the stud, thereby getting the gap out of whack.
      4) If you're handy with a volt/ohm meter. Look for 3-4ohms between the ground wire and one of the legs of the coil, as well as between one leg and the conductor inside the spark plug boot.
      Good luck, I have a video in the can that address these things. Just need a few rainy days to edit them together. Cheers!

      @@TheLawnmowerLady Thought I’d let you know about my continuing Honda adventure. My neighbour and I both bought identical Troy-Bilt mowers on sale from Canadian Tire several years ago. He’s not had the same trouble as me. I talked him in to allowing me to remove his ignition coil and use it on mine for a day…same thing, no start when hot. Then, while scratching my head some more, I noticed the safety switch tucked under the flywheel wondering if it could be the problem. That switch is open during operation and closes when you release the bail handle thus grounding out the ignition coil, as I understand it. I thought it might be staying closed when hot so I sprayed the daylights out of it with electrical contact cleaner getting spray under the protective boot. Today, it started every time while the engine was hot! I’m thinking that switch was the problem all along, but I don’t trust it, looks like fun trying to replace it. Thanks again for your help, this seems like a fairly rare problem…maybe helps you one day.

      @TheLawnmowerLady  3 года назад +1

      @@georgeian3243 Glad you figured this out Mr. George! And lucky you could use that coil from your neighbor. I've honestly not seen the safety switch actually cause this problem, but it makes sense. I do clean off the crud anytime I have to take off a shroud, especially on B/S engines. No special reason, but I might as well while the cover is off. Thanks for following up, and I too hope this helps someone in the future. Cheers!

    • @TheLawnmowerLady
      @TheLawnmowerLady  4 месяца назад

      I honestly think what you are hearing in this video is an audio/microphone anomaly. I have gone though several cameras, microphones, etc., over the years; and they all have noise suppression quirks that I can't always control. I don't recall which camera/mic I was using. That said, if your mower does this, there could be many different issues: fuel flow, clogged jets, dirty fuel, ignition problems, poor air flow... diagnosing any issue over the internet is difficult.

      Low oil just means a bit more wear and tear on engine internals. Never have I seen it as a reason not to start except on generators with low oil sensors. If you don't have a separate choke cable, or lever, I'd be suspect of the thermowax piston thingy that controls the auto choke function. Hope this helps.

      Check the basics: spark, fuel, and air filter. If it's a Honda, east to drop the carb bowl (10mm) to make sure there is no gunk in the bottom of the carb. If it looks janky in there, a simple carb clean should fix you up. I just released a basic carb clean video today on a similar Honda: ruclips.net/video/wJPM_ArLSgg/видео.html Hope this helps!

    So I have this mower, though it's a troy it's the same engine. I've checked all of these things. Fuel filter is new and clean. Air filter is clean. Spark plug is clean. Fuel line is clean. I checked to see if the cut off valve was properly aligned, that's aligned. Cleaned the carburetor. It roars to life every time, then it dies a few seconds later. It gets gas to start it without problem, but for some reason the gas is not continuing to flow. Any ideas of anything else this might be?

      There is a screw on top of the carb that covers the idle circuit jet. Some models you have to remove the idle speed screw (some are plastic, some are metal) if plastic, the idle jet is also plastic and pops off. Tiny hole in the bottom needs clearing out. If metal, the jet is not removable, and tiny wires (guitar strings, bread Tues, etc.) can be used to clear the jet. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

      Another thing I thought of, and I've only seen it one other time... The fuel line on some is double walled type, The inner wall had collapsed resulting in the same symptoms as you describe. Pull off the carb bowl and open the fuel tap. There should be a steady drip of fuel to rule this problem out. But I suspect, as in my earlier comment it's likely the idle circuit.

    I have this nearly exact mower. It was giving me problems with starting and surging then quitting. I cleaned the carb and ran ok for a bit, then started giving problems again, so I replaced the carb last week. It ran fine and I cut the lawn. A week later, same exact problem, it surged then quit. It will not start except on the prime. Any ideas? I pulled the new carb, it seemed clean, and jets were clear.

      I wish it was easy to fix over the interwebs 😬 I'd start to make sure you actually have spark, pull the plug and ground it out on some part of the engine head. Hopefully you will see spark jump across the electrode when you get a friend to pull the rope. If you don't have spark, you might have a bad zone cable (brake cable). It's rare, but some new plugs are bad, try the old one.
      Next, try squirting a bit of fuel directly into the throat of the carburetor. If it fires off for a bit, then you have a fuel flow problem. Take out the bottom screw on the carb bowl, while it's still on the engine. Open the fuel tap, and you should see a good dribble of fuel. If not, you have a clogged, collapsed fuel line, or maybe the fuel tank screen is plugged. Good luck!

    • @TheLawnmowerLady
      @TheLawnmowerLady  2 года назад +1

      It certainly sounds like a fuel delivery issue. Even the smallest amount of water (from ethanol laced fuel) in the carb bowl will keep the mower from running. That, and the idle circuit of these carburetors often get clogged up. Unless you completely disassembled the carb, you might have some clogged passages ruclips.net/video/8qic4cARD2E/видео.html takes this same carb completely apart to clean. I hope this helps.

      It sounds suspiciously like an ignition coil breaking down. Difficult hot starts are a common symptom. Next time it happens, pull the plug and test it for spark. If no spark when hot, replace the coil. I know it is frustrating, but these older mowers are far superior to anything on the market today.
