This is literally the single one thing I have consumed more than coffee, food or cigarettes on a daily basis just to survive the last 2+ years of 12-16hr workdays. Can not even start to explain how crucial it has been to manage stress, keep production high nor even imagine surviving the last 2 years without it, period. Imagine how cool it would have been if the Commodore 64 came with two SID chips, to enable stereo sound and six channels? Back then, that would have been absolutely EPIC.
Well Commodore did it was the DX65 formally known as the C65 had Duel Sid chips unfortunately the C65 did NOT come out into the market only the Prototypes and Dealer Display Models Came out that now on a few exists in the World ..

I have never been a C64 user but in my opinion SID was the best synth chip ever used on an 8bit old school machine even if it displays the identical symptoms of C64's graphics chip. You saw/heard one game or tune...you saw/heard them all. The aesthetics of those chips do not change that much. I have to say that many modern tunes do sound much clearer but that's the only difference. I do prefer AY/YM with its PWM implementations or better , Paula's old brother , the Pokey chip for their diverse characters but even if SID was a ''dead end" for sound generation on computers I really love what it offered to the scene. Sound wise, Pokey and Paula showed us the direction the industry was heading.
Bob Yannes did a pretty good job with SID. Given he was granted limited time to come up with something for the C64 for CES '82. He said he wasn't quite pleased with it, but everybody else was so. This is the result. I have no complaints.
Yes Commodore should skip develope commodore 128 and develope commodore 64 plus instead with 128k usebla memory and duouble sid. More colors maybe same as Nes 52 color palette and working with older c64 titles.

I can't see how. The Spectrum was lower resolution even in hires mode, with fewer colours, only one grey, and no good way to do flesh tones. The C64 might have a more muted palette, but it's flexible.

I can't help but think how things would have unraveled at the time if the c64 had 2 SIDS from the beginning.
It would have made the stage of some synth bands at the time I think. Because the creator of the Sid went on to create Ensoniq synthesizers
The C65 had 2 SIDs. So they thought about this for a C64 successor. The Mega65 (FPGA based recreation of the C65) will have 4 SIDs and PCM sound.

I always wondered what the C65 could do. But there are too few out there to become a viable demo scene.
