For anyone wondering what the title means."This song is about lead singer Jesse Lacey's fear that he will one day burn out or fall from grace.Diego Maradona is an Argentine soccer player who led his country to the World Cup in 1986, faltered due to drug use. Elvis Presley had a brilliant singing career before drugs and health problems took their toll. Both men had spectacular talents but lost it all. "
I always thought there was another underlying story of a guy who preys on drunk and vulnerable women at bars too? nonetheless, a story of falling from grace
one of their best songs... deja entendu was the shit back in the days and is still my second all time favorite album...(behind the devil and god of course, haha)
I love Jesse Lacey. He is amazing. This song is so good. Vinnie wrote this song, and i love it. I just want to wrap my arms around Jesse in this video! great angle. love the vid.
Jesse said in an interview that the title of the song comes from a dream he had where he had this fight with Maradona and Elvis, two legends who kind of made huge messes of themselves in the latter part of their lives.
Deja is my personal favorite. I really enjoy the Devil and God, and Your Favorite Weapon has a couple good ones...Soco Amaretto Lime is my favorite off that album.
mannn try and go to a brand new show and not sing, i went to the one at san jose last friday... omg. everyone was getting into and singing... it was amazinnnnnnnnnng
that's why most musicians stop making music after a while or at least putting it out there. their "fans" are so entranced in what they used to be, now who they are.
@ChocolatePoop1301 I can see that you posted this comment almost a year ago, but I really hope that you have gotten their other albums. "The Devil and God..." and "Daisy" are both masterpieces, and might even be better than "Deja."
@calmncollected10 hey i have listened to Brand New since deja came out, so i guess you would call me an "original fan"... but i dont think i could ever pick a favorite Brand New record. weapon, deja, devil and god, the fight off your demons demos, daisy... they are all amazing. they are all highly unique collections of art that i love to much to judge which one is best.
yeah... someone earlier said something about jesse's lyrics but they are vinnies.. even though jesse is a god at writing haha. but i thought vin deserved his credit. he writes alot of the darker songs on deja entendu like the quiet things and sic transit gloria, and others:)
@symbiot90 Look on Ultimate Guitar. There's a guitar pro tab that's near perfect. If you don't have GP, get TuxGuitar- it's a freeware program, virus-free, that can open GP files. That's how I learned this one.
Ha I think this song is about frustration with the whole stupid way we conduct relationships, and jesse is saying how its all just a bit pointless going out, getting drunk and pulling some random.
you know it is possible that he's not singing about himself! i personally think the metaphorical meaning is the most realistic but if its the litteral meaning then it could just be a story!
I figured this song out on my own, and looking at what Jesse plays in this video, I'm pretty sure it's spot-on. Tell me if you want me to type up some tabs for you.
i try :) and ocelot600 and always6or7, though i agree with both of you that some of these interpretations are pretty ridiculous, it's still pointless and a bit rude to call people potentially hurtful names. we're all people here behind our usernames. no need to try to bring anyone else down.
i can definitely see how you can interpret the song as fear of burining out, but its not the most obvious to me, and some of the lyrics don't make too much song if you use that interpretation. the comparison to elvis and maradona seems to be more about their lifestyle than the decline in their careers. its not just about taking advantage of drunk girls either though. for one thing, i never put emphasis on her being drunk. it sounds to me much more like she just wants to sleep with a rockstar.
its not about raping a girl he uses a drunk girl as a metaphor... the song is about jesse's fear of burning out one day or not being as big as he once was... think about the title... i mean come on people your listening to brand new here you got to be more open minded
You guys are looking to deep into his meaning of the song, plus it's HIS meaning, you're supposed to interpret the song anywhichway you want to, there's no wrong way.
JK880715 you're close, but wrong. it's about the banning of international trade :( the drunk girl is china and the guy taking "her" out is america. everything else is a metaphor for eating even when you're full, because you're at your favorite restaurant and you hate left-overs. nobody understands jesse's words like i do :(
1. i was kidding 2. JK880715, you're thinking of "good to know that if i ever need attention all i have to do is die." if i were you, i'd be really embarrassed!!!
Props to the ladies in the audience for hitting those harmony notes!
This is the only CD I have of them, but it's easily the best CD I've ever listened to. Most underrated band of all time in my book.
The album was epic back in the day. Their first album was great but standard pop-punk/ hardcore of the time. Their second album was so much more.
This performance is fucking flawless. I would give a lot to see Brand New in concert!
Can't believe this video is 10 years old. It makes me feel kinda old/sad :/
ursopostmodern :/
18 years

Zepps Dead well, fuck.
Same reaction here, self-fulfilling prophecy.
I always thought there was another underlying story of a guy who preys on drunk and vulnerable women at bars too? nonetheless, a story of falling from grace
This song has always been unclear to me but I always imagined it was about two people hooking up without any feelings towards ecahother.
For sure written about him in some sort of sense. Dude def knew he had issues... just didn't know when or if they would come out...
I want to learn this song soo bad but the stretch from the 5th fret to the 9th holy shit
did you learn it yet?
@@mclovin3258 No
Where do you stretch from 5 to 9 ?

My favourite song by them, what beautiful words. He's a genius.
this is the best song ever
Jesse said in an interview that the title of the song comes from a dream he had where he had this fight with Maradona and Elvis, two legends who kind of made huge messes of themselves in the latter part of their lives.
what an epic voice
great footage!! I personally applaud you.

so good.
I agree with everything you said. however, I think Daisy is now their best album to date
16 year old comment section is lit
@dvt1393 Thx, I'll put them on my list!
@aburnxingexample14 I wouldn't say daisy "sucked". It certainly was a departure from previous work, but I still have a great appreciation for it.
yeah...

Amazing band, amazing song. I gonna drink to this song tomorrow.
Check out the music video for JESUS in Detroit.
if you look on the deja entendu
it tells who wrote it, i think jesse and vinnie wrote this together.
Jesse wrote I think 5 or 6 songs on deja entendu
That's the best book in the world. =]]
Please get back together :(
no nononono vin and jesse wrote the guitar for this song. jesse wrote all the lyrics on deja entendu its in the book. vin did write handcuffs tho
Ha I think this song is about frustration with the whole stupid way we conduct relationships, and jesse is saying how its all just a bit pointless going out, getting drunk and pulling some random.
@dvt1393 Thx!
And his other band mates! :P
I agree lol. but his new music is cool as well but.. Yep
firts of all why this song has the name of a great soccer player why can you tell meee?¿
thanks
you know it is possible that he's not singing about himself! i personally think the metaphorical meaning is the most realistic but if its the litteral meaning then it could just be a story!
@aburnxingexample14 nah, Daisy is their most mature record and also their best.
I figured this song out on my own, and looking at what Jesse plays in this video, I'm pretty sure it's spot-on. Tell me if you want me to type up some tabs for you.
can you plz
Amazing lyrics, the way he puts it together, idk there's something about his diction
It's that awesome double meaning with the word Lie
best.
lmao KDO's comment made me piss myself
i try :)

deja entendu is definitely the best record
@calmncollected10 he did top deja, with the devil and god are raging inside me
Well, now this video is too old for Mr. Lacey.
@symbiot90 too bad your 12 and have to use caps in every single comment.
why? there is hardly and bass in this song at all. its all on guitar dropped d half step down.
feel like what?
the ladies just sound ok in unison but if you are near them you'd want to put an ice-pick in your ear, off=key as fuck Im sure
bob saget lol

I really prefer the literal meaning of the song, it's sad. Maybe it's just cause I'm friends with too many gals that like the booze :P
this song is about a 13 year old girl
etg592 wow you were right!
etg592 15 but still
Not far off
well this song is ruined now
Welp… this didn’t age well at all
fr
fuck you are hilarious!
