Hey everybody welcome back to my channel, hope you're all doing well! I've been meaning to do this video for a while but held off on it for a few months and recently decided it was about time to finally make it since it was still something I was interested in talking about with you guys. From the title you can probably tell that we're going to be exploring the world of toxic ships, it's been a minute since we've done an "exploring the world of" video so I'm excited to be back with one!
If you've been on the internet you've probably witnessed how intense and devoted some fans can become whether it's on tumblr, tik tok, twitter or instagram, and these can be fans of anything or anyone really, but when it comes to toxic fans in today's video we're focusing on "shippers" who ship singers that they believe are in undercover relationships with each other. If you aren't sure what a shipper or ship is, the act of shipping is hoping two people end up together romantically. Everyone's "shipped" people at some point whether they were aware of it or not, maybe they were characters in a tv show or movie! But today we're looking at a specific type of shipper, the toxic kind lol. The "ships" we'll be focusing on today are Larry Stylinson which is a ship name for Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson previously from One Direction as well as Camren which is the name for Camila Cabello and Lauren Jaregui's ship, previously from Fifth Harmony.
So we'll be doing a bit of an internet deep dive if you will.. looking at the general idea of shipping: what it is, why it's appealing for people etc as well as exploring the internet history behind the Larry Stylinson and Camren ships specifically because I think they're quite unique considering they aren't a ship that involves fictional characters... they're real people and also because they've lasted so long even though both One Direction and Fifth Harmony have been disbanded for years now. I also feel like some areas of their fanbases are good examples of shipping gone too far or turned toxic in the effort of proving their ship is "real". Also really quick I want to make it super clear that this video isn't meant to villanize anyone who's ever engaged in shipping before, that's why I included the bit about how shipping is completely normal and shouldn't be treated like some weird unknown lol. This video is just meant to explore the extreme corners of shipping and how it can have a negative effect on the people within the ship when it involves shipping real people vs fictional characters.

Yeah, but if for example Louis would be a girl, everybody thinks they are in a relationship. For example: h and l were holding hands a couple of times on camera. But if there is one photo on an "privat wedding", where hes holding the hand of a blonde woman, everybody thinks they're dating. I just think that's messed up

I'm a "fan" of exactly one kpop ship, and even then I mostly just look at pictures of them together and go "aww, cute". I see it as a completely separate world from the actual idols, like there's character them and real life them and they aren't even the same people. I can't imagine there ever being an overlap, trying to ask the actual people about the ship, or genuinely believing they're together.. and thats just not my business. I also can never read or look at smut of real people its so weird to me 💀. Some of these people are hella loud though..

I was one that speculated they may have had something but I wasn't obsessive about it and seeing how genuine her feelings were, how passionate she was about what she was saying, I instantly felt gross and regretted everything and I wish everyone else felt that way too.
@@kaepiper They should've but some of these people are honestly beyond caring what their faves really feel or think. For them, it really feels like the ship is about treating two irl humans like dolls to play with - hence some of them actually getting enraged and bullying the real life partners of the stars because that partner is getting in the way of their fantasy. Oh, they'll dress it up as concern over this person being "forced" to live in the closet or in an oppressive life with someone they don't love but that's really what its about.
another example of a toxic real life ship is septiplier when both members of the ship were like “hey, if you wanna draw us being bros that’s fine, but please dont draw us having sex with each other” and to put it as sean did, “shipping real people always gets sexual”

Yes, exactly what I was thinking about while watching this. Septiplier started out as two friends joking around and the fans RAN with it. I remember seeing rabid fans hating on their girlfriends because they were "ruining Septiplier".
I do wonder how celebrities feel about having their characters drawn in explicit scenarios.
I remember that interview of Michael Fassbender and James Mcavoy, they laughed it out but clearly it was super uncomfortable for them. And if they ever said something they know they would face awful backlash, but those are their bodies at the end of the day.
ugh i was in this ship fandom for years and looking back it is literally INSANE how the videos of “evidence” is them looking at each other for two seconds. like what??? i feel like i was starting to cross the line a little when i dismissed their feelings on how the ship made them both uncomfortable. i loved the idea so much that i forgot they were REAL people! i’m glad i got over that ship bc omg- I wrote fan fiction on wattpad when i was like thirteen or fourteen. i had like 400 followers and to me who still doesn’t have followers on anything, was a lot. i reread those sometimes and they are so cringy omfg. anyway, i think it is so much more healthy to ship fictional people instead of actual people for obvious reasons.
One thing that I found really unforgivable about the overly... *DEDICATED* Larry stans was when they were claiming that Louis’ child was fake. Not just “oh Management™️ made him have a baby with a woman to put the Larry ship to rest”, but the people who said his son was flat out not real, that he was holding a doll/someone else’s baby, etc. Like, that’s next level boundary crossing

YES. This was the moment that really turned me away from shipping real people because it felt so extreme and so gross to even ~speculate~ that someone’s child was fake.

one of the worst parts with the whole camren thing was lauren was actually outed by fans. they hacked into her family member's wedding photobooth site and leaked pictures of her and her then girlfriend at the time kissing. perez hilton then published an article about it and she was FORCED to come out. it's terrible because then people used to "reaffirm" their beliefs and also harassed her girlfriend.

Shipping the actors who play a couple is one of the weirdest and grossest imo. “They have so much chemistry😩♥️” maam its their job
It being their job isn't mutualy exclusive of actors having chemistry; it isn't "their jobs" to have chemistry, and it's not super common for actors to actually have it in the first place. People are stupid and _can_ mistake platonic chemistry for attraction, but in some cases it's pretty obvious that while it'd (a relationship or affair) never happen, physical attraction on-set _does_ happen. (I'm not advocating for shipping beople, btw; I just found your statement factually debatable)
@@Daggeira if the actors are going to be playing a couple on a film or tv show, the showrunners will likely test their chemistry before employing them. They’re probably going to look good together, they’ll be engaging while talking to each other, they’ll probably get along really well too. That’s all part of what most casting teams will be looking for. The insinuation that people who are hired to have chemistry having chemistry is proof of them being together in real life will always be very weird.

If they gave a shit, I wouldn't be constantly put off by the _lack_ of chemistry in most things I've seen. I _know_ there's examples of people being cast together that _hate_ each other, I just can't think ofone off the top of my head at the moment.
a good example is john Krasinski and Jenna Fischer. they both played parts on the office and yes, they were romantically involved, but only in the show. john literally has a wife, i’ve seen so many people bash emily blunt for being married to john instead of jenna being married to him. it’s really disappointing because all of those people have lives and partners

I had kind of an affair with a friend back in highschool, not a relationship but just screwing around.

although i often didn't ship real people too much, I did have one ship I was into for awhile when I was around 13. and it's upsetting when I think about it now; I never wrote any fanfiction or created any fanart of the two, but the content creators knew people were shipping them because the shippers would send their fanart and fanfics to their P.O. boxes to open for videos. i feel like i probably shipped them (and all my other malexmale anime ships) because of my repressed bicuriosity, and also fanfic and fanart being my introduction to sexuality and pornography as a whole. i never understood why i found hidden gay relationships to be exciting/alluring when I was shipping them, which makes me hope that there will be different ways for celebrities to protect their privacy in the future when experiencing stuff like this :/. if their fans can't even understand why what they're doing is wrong, even after it is pointed out to them repeatedly, there should really be some sort of way for celebrities to not have their privacy invaded.

Or that not everyone wants to be in the pants of any person, even if they're close to them in some way??? Like, it's so bonkers to me that they don't seem to realize that people have standards, preferences, specific attractions (or a lack thereof such as asexuality), specific feelings to one another, and most of all BOUNDARIES that should be respected by the public, ESPECIALLY when the parties involved state so.

I think you're making the mistake that "Shipping" is inherently sexual, which it isn't. "Shipping" is a shortened version of "Relationshipping" which covers ALL relationships, sexual ones just happen to be more prevalent.

That's why I said at the beginning of my comment "Do *THESE TYPES* of shippers...", not all shippers. I was specifically referring to those that were the focus of this video. As Casey described: the ones who are toxic, particularly those who ship actual people and not characters, those who create conspiracy theories and/or rumors on real people and their relationships/sexualities, and will use any display of affection between the shipees -- no matter how small and unromantic -- to push the narrative that they're secretly in love. I'm talking about those who are so unrelenting with spreading their ship theories and wanting to see it confirmed/happen that it crosses into harassment and/or fetishization.
Platonic relationships are far more charged than romantic/sexual ones, and speculating on a real peoples' clearly platonic relationships to be actually sexual can be harmful to the parties involved. As explained in the video, these types of shippers have negatively affected the relationships of these celebrities/public figures to the point where they can no longer interact with each other normally (even in private) and/or they start to see themselves negatively over it. Despite them frequently stating that there isn't anything happening, they're uncomfortable with these rumors being spread and want it to stop, and/or their mental health is being affected, toxic shippers can't seem to understand that not everything they see their favorite celebrities do with each other is not a secret sign that they want to do each other, that they should get together romantically, or that they're "really" more than friends.
My comment was to express my frustrations with this and how it seems that they don't realize that they could ship people to be friends instead of lovers. Even if they're just kids, people do this all the time with two friends who happen to be of opposite genders, and it can be incredibly frustrating and potentially harmful to the two of them to constantly have that narrative be made about them (trust me, I grew up with this shit and I still feel weird bringing my friend up in conversation because of this); I can't imagine how amplified this can be when you have hordes of people doing this from every platform out there, treating you as a character instead of an actual person.

As a queer person what Lauren said literally made me cry. It's hard to feel like you have to distance yourself from a friend because people make you feel like you're some kind of predator. You're just analyzing every interaction between you and that person just to make sure you don't slip and do something to somehow prove someone point. @@EmyN Exactly. It‘s 100% fine to like the idea of two people in the public eye being together or even thinking they might already have something going on, but it‘s so easy to just do it…non-invasively.
I think it can just be a part of fandom involving real people and as long as you live out that fandom in a way that doesn‘t invade their lives or even makes them uncomfortable, it‘s fine, especially since shipping people can just mean enjoying watching their platonic relationship while knowing that that‘s all it is.
There are even celebrities who like that people are shipping them and enjoy fanart/fanfiction about themselves, but it’s not the standard and all the stuff in this video is just messed up and should never happen.

Kpop companies ABSOLUTELY promote shipping. They subtly sell the idea of their popular ships in official content. Inserting "moments" between members into advertisements, photo units and other official content helps keep shippers engaged and intrigued. Members also partake in fan service on stage and at fan sign events. I think some shippers are aware that they are intentionally being fed this content, while others have strayed far from reality and deluded themselves into thinking its more than it is. tbh Its proven to be a very profitable and highly effective marketing strategy, but unfortunately it has produced some of the most vile and toxic fans I've ever seen.

Honestly 100% agree. Even though i did ship Larry at one point, I was always bothered by how a lot of the “proof” were them just staring at each other sometimes. (Do they not share glances with their friends?) Or things that are just two touchy people being friendly. Hell, some still think they’re in a relationship today even tho they haven’t been seen in the same room in years and have pretty different social circles. I grew up having what i thought was my sexuality constantly invalidated by other people who “knew better” and just assumed i was in the closet. I remember having so many conversations with my friends and siblings to make sure I wasn’t coming off predictor-ish. I was so scared that I made them feel the same way straight men make us feel or the way that homophobic societies make gay people look.
Whenever I made friends with other girls and we got close people would immediately accuse me of dating them. If I went out to eat with them or hang out people would ask them if we were dating. One person stopped being physically affectionate with me after people made a big fuss out of her holding my hand.
Locker rooms were terrifying when I came out. I had to make doubly sure I didn't look at anyone so nobody could accuse me of perving which it turns out people talked about me doing behind my back anyway. That's not even touching upon the guilt I felt at being attracted to girls :/

I used to be a hardcore larry shipper, 2012-2015. I watched all the fan made "larry moments" videos, hated Modest for making them hide, even believed in that crazy rainbow bear conspiracy. Looking back, my impulse rationale is to call it pure delusion. Though, I know it's deeper than that. As a socially anxious teenager, I was looking for a community to be a part of. The general fandom gave me that, but larry gave me something even more intimate. It felt like I belonged to something. Add to that the fact that I was queer, it was a perfect storm. I desperately wanted a queer idol to look up to and more importantly, relate to. It became an obsession. You couldn't present any fact I couldn't discredit (in my eyes anyway). Everyone else was wrong and I was part of an elite community that knew better and would save my idols. I think that's a huge part of it as well, the savior complex that the larry community and similar ships foster. Now, 6 years later, it's clear there were (and are) a lot of interacting variables that make one such a rigid shipper, one that will go to extreme lengths to prove their ship, even at the cost of their idols' mental health. At some point, it stops being about the ship and all about the shipper. THEY are right, THEY know better than everyone, THEY are going to save their idol, THEY ARE THEIR SAVIOR. A superiority + savior complex years in the making is a dangerous thing, even if it only manifests as just words on the internet, because those words are still about real people, directed at real people, impact real people. But by then it's too late, the real people have become caricatures the shipper only uses to propel their own agenda and ego.

This is why its not ok to ship real people. It's creepy and makes them uncomfortable. Real people, even celebrities, have feelings, fictional characters don't have real feelings, they don't care if they ship you or not, they aren't real. But real people do care.
despite not being a public figure i can relate to the absolute discomfort. when i was in middle school i had but one friend, and people constantly thought we were together. it made me deeply uncomfortable and actually strained our relationship.
Same, I didn't give a damn about what others thought but my friend was extremely uncomfortable with this shit and he started distancing himself from me. That's how our friendship ended because of some delusional people.

This still happens with me and my friend I’m very socially awkward so I really just tend to hang around with my friend and we get along well, sometimes we both get touchy(not sexually) and mess around and people ask if we’re dating and it is so uncomfortable with just one person asking so I can’t even imagine how uncomfortable these celebrities get when thousands of people ask or make it their whole religion almost to them and their friends
People literally can’t touch each other without being shipped. Who doesn’t touch their friends?! In kpop it’s especially bad because you see all the stupid “analysis” videos that people do. You can think people look cute together but to write smut and draw explicit pictures of real life people is disgusting. Like people don’t understand that that could take a toll on someone mentally and possibly ruin a great friendship. Platonic shipping is ok, but romantically shipping real people is gross.
