    James Hetfield is a Riff God, The Black Album is one of the greatest and heaviest albums of Heavy Metal and for sure one of the top albums in the 90´s, it crowned Metallica from an underground breaking band all the way to the most importat Metal band to the Biggest (and for a period of time) the Best Metal band, from Music to Sales and everything in between there was a reason why Metallica got so big and is as influential as is today.

    To all the Metallica guitar "tone cloners" out there, pay close attention to how Hetfield has taped up his lower strings and the headstock of his guitar at 0:54 sec. James is muting all excess string noise and completely muting ( via the white tape ) all unwanted strings.

    Black Album was great. It wasn't even as different from their first 4 albums as people say. There was some of the heaviest stuff I've ever heard in that album and the lyrics from James are just amazing. Kirk does well on this album especially with the unforgiven solo. Lars learned more rhythm instead of just mindless fast drumming. Jason was great as usual and his bass was much louder than AJFA

    • @patrickwilliamson9510
      @patrickwilliamson9510 6 лет назад +19

      Max Lu I wish people would see the truth of what you just said. Everybody thinks Metallica ended at AJFA. Bullshit! The Black Album - in many ways - is the crowning jewel of their most iconic era (Kill through Black).

      I don't even think the Load albums were that bad in retrospect. Yeah there was a lot of filler, but if they condensed them into one album of about 12 to 14 songs, they would be considered great.

    • @luckydominguez2654
      @luckydominguez2654 6 лет назад

      Yeah, they have fillers, but you don´t even need to cut as much song, just 2-3 from each album, they´re awesome

    The way the sound was captured "recorded" on this album is something special, it had this almost futuristic aspects to it. Even compared to new recorded albums the recording engineering in this album still shines.
    Not even mentioning the so many amazing guitar riffs this album has....timeless.

    The Black Album is great on many levels. Has some great heavy songs that get me through a rough day. Nothing Else Matters is very calming song for me. This album ive listened to since 1995 and i don't see myself stopping any time soon. A Year and a Half in the Life of is a brilliant insight into the making of Black Album live footage and music vids.

  • @markflemmer1326

    I must say that I tend to sell James short as a guitarist. I don't know that he's the greatest soloist, and he would probably admit as much, but I've never really seen him play using finger style on a classical guitar like in this video. I love the heavy tones, but I also have a great love for acoustic and classical/finger style playing. I'm a huge Steve Howe (Yes) fan, and both Ritchie Blackmore and Randy Rhoads were greatly influenced by classical, and made use of that genre on both acoustic and electric guitar. Yngwie is obviously another example, but I wish he played more acoustic pieces alternating between single note passages and chord work---I'm sure he CAN, but focuses on the lightning fast solo passages. Again, I don't think that James is on a level with those 3 solo wise, but is a great rhythm player and can get by well enough as a soloist.

    And for the haters :
    Yes , I do think that Death Magnetic is better then the Black Album.
    Because I think it just has more of the old Metallica spirit.
    It has killer riffs , killer solos (like no shit 2 min. absolut mind blowing shit) and its basicly just faster loader and heavyer .
    The solos on the Black Album are also super awesome but , in my opinion, way to short !
    And just because I think DM is better it doesn't mean I dont love them all !

      ***** Not as heavy??? That Was Just Your Life and My Apocalypse are sledgehammers! What makes the overall album seem not as heavy as the first three is Rick Rubin's Lackluster production. To be honest, I'm not a big fan of Rubin's metal-work. His Slayer albums sacrifice ferocity in exchange for fidelity, when both can be attained at once.

    I HATED the Black album. Maybe I'm too old, but Metallica went to shit when Burton died. He would never have allowed the band to go in the direction they went. I remember when Justice came out. I was a little disappointed, but it was still a Metallica album. I couldn't even finish listening to the Black album when it came out. Lightning and Puppets were so amazing when they came out, it's such a disappointment where they have gone.

      You're crazy, St. Anger, and hardwired are the only albums that sucked.

      I always see people saying that Cliff wouldn't have let them go in the direction that they did. But the band was lead by James and Lars, not Cliff. In my mind there's no disputing the fact that if James and Lars wanted to go in this direction, they would have with or without Cliff. People always assume Cliff would've hated this stuff because all they know of Cliff is the stuff he contributed on master and ride, but the reality is that out of all of those guys, Cliff was the most musically diverse. He was heavily influence by classical music, and also listened to Yes, The Police, Jethro Tull, and a bunch of stuff that wasn't remotely metal. He had a very open mind when it came to music and wasn't concerned about adhering to strict genre styles. So, if anything, if you had to guess who might support this kind of stuff back in 86, Cliff probably would've been the most likely candidate out of all of them. People like to present him as the most die hard and 'metal' out of the band, but the fact is he was already bringing in external influences for the band, especially with James on classical music and harmony. It's a shame people have it so backwards.
