My buddy is a cocker spaniel and at 33lbs, vet told me he needs to drop around 5lbs so this video definitely helps. I want my boy to be healthy and live as long as possible so I'm going to work on his diet
Ugh ppl are always telling me my dog is overweight and big. And I ignored it for so long. Then the vet told us she was 3 pounds (at least) over weight. They said this is about 30 pounds in human weight. Now I feel so guilty that she’s overweight and I feel so bad for my baby
Me too. I feel horrible that I have done this to my baby. She is many pounds overweight. I cook for her every day. So, it's a matter of how much I feed her. I need to learn better.
Good for you for being proactive! I’ve had two Cavs (my sweet Lexi died last year from CHF at age 11 😢). My Katie is now almost 14 and has been between 13-15 lbs her whole adult life and I swear it’s due to feeding raw and portion control. She’s also heart clear! 😍
I also experienced a similar issue with my Cavalier Caspy being my first dog. We lived in an apartment in a country with harsh weather conditions, therefore he could not be walked long in the winter due to the extreme cold. He was also a picky eater and would only eat home cooked chicken. We initially thought this was good for him since it’s home meals. We didn’t realise that he was gaining weight until we met another cavalier and he was substantially larger. Since he had a haircut he didn’t look that large and we could still feel his ribs and bones fine. We weighed him in and he was almost 40 pounds! I was shocked and spend a while researching to find out that the chicken is making him gain a lot of weight. We took a long time transitioning him into dry food but we finally did it! And now he’s losing weight! And since the weather is better, I cycle with him everyday! He is now 33 pounds and on his way to become smaller. Although he does feel as if he is a generally muscular cavalier, your video inspired us to help his weight loss even more! 💕
quick question for you and other cavalier owners, how long is your dog from nose to tail? I can't find anything online and I'm trying to prepare for my new puppy 💕🐶 also want to say THANK YOU to you, your husband, Herky and Milton for all of the information in these videos, it has made me feel so excited and confident in getting my new puppy. Definitely has given me a lot of good information!
Wow!! Good job you guys!! Not easy you really need to be persistent with them ....I have an overweight dog too....but little comes along way! I'm from Quebec too....nice Video!
Omg I totally believe in the freeze dried raw foods! Lily, my cavalier was super picky too and only ate fully the freeze dried raw foods. Just a pain rehydrating it but it totally was worth it. I’m glad herky was able to loose the weight and be healthy now.
One of our new puppies, our three month old Blenheim, was overweight when we got him. I've cut back on the amount of food he is getting and he has almost lost 1/2 pound and is looking much trimmer. One rule of thumb I have heard is for a Cavalier to have an hour glass waist. If you can't see the waist, they are overweight. And for Cavalier's, with their predisposition for mitral heart disease, keeping them trim is extremely important. Thanks for the video!
My cavalier is 2 and he is 35 pounds and it’s really bad but the vet never said anything about it 😞 so in two days I am starting his diet and I don’t know what to do
Thank you for this video. A lot of cav owners are struggling with this. Your info and encouragement is much more helpful than all the shaming going on from other owners. I am working with polo cutting down the treats and encouraging less time on the couch !
My cav is 29 lbs. he’s about to start a hypoallergenic/elimination diet for the next 8-9 weeks due to allergies. No treats or anything! I started thinking this is going to definitely shrink him. Came here and felt relieved that maybe this is a blessing in disguise.
I needed this thank you! Your dogs are gorgeous, they look so healthy... I have two cavaliers, similar story...we have gone raw too with great results..bad treats now gone and learning to ignore the ‘I’m starving’ look!!!! You’ve inspired me to keep going with it with the older one that also looks like a potato 🥔 🤣🤣
Love miltons collar! It really suits her! Also our vet said that Lacey "could do with losing a little weight" and we didn't know she needed to lose at least 4kg (8lbs)! Its good Herky has lost her weight, she will be a lot fitter and happier for it. I knew a calvaliar which weighed 16kg (35 lbs!) he was tall for a cavaliar but definatley overweight!
I know, I dont know the owners that well but I did talk to him about the dogs weight, I think he said they were getting him to lose weight but its taking a long time.
I know this is two years overdue, but good job Herky!!! Oliver has also lost weight since we last saw you guys last summer in NYC... I agree with all that you shared in this video! :)
Going to try a few of these tips my cavaliers Winter is almost 23 lbs. I figured her body was just going through some changes after having puppies in January. But she's to thick so this is helpful! Even my boy has went from his usual 15lbs to 19 so got to change things up. Thank you for this
This video is really inspiring and useful. I have two cavaliers, the younger one is very fit, but he isn't trueborn, so that's why he's so small and looks like puppy although he's almost five years old. The older is eight years old and she really quickly got overweight after she had to stop doing agility due to health reasons. She weighs about 24 pounds and I would like to start doing something about it. Your video showed me that it's possible and the results are awesome 💚
this is very helpful I plan to get a cavalier but my mom is one of those dog moms who gives a dog treats multiple times a day and those treats contain so many calories its insane so because this will be MY dog i told my mom she’s not allowed to give it treats as often
We've been doing Cheerios for Treats my puppy is still on puppy food So your information is very good for when we do transition over to adult food thank you so much
Hello, my TRI cavalier is about 8kg and 19 months old. We found she put a lot of weight on after desexing. I gave her Royal Canine puppy till 10 months then switched to Adult. Now she dosen’t eat much of it, the vet told me to give her cooked chicken or beef she spits out the vegetables or rice when I add them. I cant seem to find out how much chicken or beef they should have a day. Tried Barf( Bones and raw food ) but she wouldn’t eat that. I am conscious of Willows weight, I can still feel her ribs and she gets a 3 klm walk in the morning and twice a week a run with our on our bikes so reasonable exercise. Will look for freeze dried food here in Tasmania and try it out, thank you.
Exactly. My dog is a Maltese and she’s almost 7kg but the vet says she’s not overweight!!! She’s way heavier than the other two even though she doesn’t eat as much. I’ve been trying to make her loose weight but the process has been soo slow 😩😩
Did I miss something? I am curious to know what do you think contributed to Herky's weight gain problem? I believe my dog will be like Milton. I actually have to encourage her to eat. I also feed her Royal Canine for puppies until she will turn 10 months and then I'm not sure if I should keep her on Royal Canine for dogs or not. I also only feed "Grain-Free" treats and I don't feed people food. Once in a while I have made her a scrambled egg, but that's about it. She also likes cut-up apples so as a special treat, she gets those. She hasn't tried carrots yet, but I hear Cavs like them. Love this video! Congrats to Herky and her owners Mai & Husband. It couldn't have been easy to lose 6 lbs. Is she at her ideal weight now?
Hi I’ve just came across this video as trying to get my wee cav to loose weight. I live in the UK and she is raw fed. It’s a pati type food she gets called nutriment. It’s recommends feeding her between 180-220g. I feed her 180g per day but I feel she is definitely heavy compared to other cavalries. Can you advise how many grams I should feed her? Thanks x
Hi Thanking you for sharing your video on your little fur babies feeding. Can you say how you feed them when they waken in the morning. do you feed them straight away? Do they drink straight away, and how many times you feed them daily. Can you say what they eat and drink and treats from rising in the morning till sleeping on a daily routine. Thanking you so much. I too have a little Cavalier.
This is the same with my keeshond, allot of hair so you cant really see. Went to stay with the breeder for a few days, and all of the keeshonds were sooo small compared to mine. Its been a mont and she already lost 1 kg :), still about 7-8 kg to go.
Do you have any problems with allergies? What do you feed them? My Cav is scratching his ears a lot. I'm trying to find a good hypoallergenic dog food that works and that my dogs will eat.
I have a 3 year old king Charles cavalier who all of a sudden is overweight..he doesn't eat that much food..3/4 of a cup split between 2 meals..the vet said he is prediabetic..he never eats treats..I'm at a loss how to get his weight under control and I need to find a different dog food..the one the vet recommended doesnt seem to be helping
Aww my lacey was 12kg (26 lbs) at her heaviest but we got her down to 8kg (17 lbs) which is the weight she should have been. Lacey was a japanese Spitz.
My handsome boy is 4 and he constantly gains weight. I feel horrible, he's happy and active just like Herky but can't get the weight off. I appreciate your insight however he is an extremely picky eater. Have you ever had these issues?
Wow, what an excellent synopsis of Herkey's weight ordeal, thank you so much for sharing! Your tips are very helpful. We have 2 Chi's, one(3yo) who carries his weight like a supermodel and the other(1.5yo) like a pro wrestler. They get exactly the same amount of food and treats, which is now very little bcz of the baby but he's now 3pnds overweight and the other .5 under! I've considered adding a raw diet but have always been afraid, wouldn't it be too rich for the younger? Does that even matter? I'm intrigued though that you said adding a raw diet on top of boosting exercise, helped Herkey immediately shred, that would be fantastic! Much thanks for your insight! I wish your whole brood health and happiness! 👍🏽+subbed
Wow, that's such a big weight loss! Good on Herky, she looks great! I know some cavaliers are just bigger and it's not weight. Like they're just big boned and built differently I guess? I wonder sometimes how big my little girl is going to be. I worry a lot too! She's my baby after all c: I worry that she's too skinny and then I flip and worry she's too chunky! But she seems very healthy to me. She'll be 10 months tomorrow and she's just a few ounces under 14 pounds. So that sounds like a lot to me after hearing about Herky's weight! But my girl is very active, always running, and she eats so slow and sparingly. She has been free fed since I got her at 9 weeks but she stopped wanting to eat her puppy food about 3 months ago and preferred my mom's dog's adult food! It's good quality adult food so I don't think it's harmed her at all. My vet has also said that she's a healthy weight and that she's just on the larger side of cavaliers. Anyways! Your dogs are absolutely lovely! I've been watching your videos since before I got my girl and now she enjoys seeing Herky and Milton on screen as well!! 💕💕🐾🐾
My boy is 6 months and already 22 pounds. He was the biggest of his litter and his dad was big as well. The vet says he is a healthy weight though and he looks fit.
My Cavalier Piper is 3 years old and the vet said over weight at 32 lbs. I have been giving too many treats so that's my fault. He has been raw fed since birth. I'm researching a better diet for him. Perhaps the dehydrated raw? I feel terrible that I've caused this weight gain and want him to be healthy. He is a bigger Cavalier as in height and build but I do think he's over weight. People have been so unkind about his weight:(
My cavalier angel weighs 30 lb she sure needs a diet we have to cut down treats which I make w peanut burger pumpkin 1 egg who wheat flour we give her cooked chic plus her dry blue wilderness but I am sure more exercise is needed help
I have a major question. How can I get my dogs as Emotional Support dogs?? DO I just pay something or where can I go to do that? I feel like I want to take them everywhere with me but can't. I live in the US if that makes a difference. PLEASE let me know. And BTW, I don't stand for ANYONE to talk bad about my dogs either. #TEAMCAVALIER
Any website you find online that says it'll send you an emotional support dog certificate for a fee is a scam. There is no official database or registration for emotional support animals like there is for service dogs. The only way to "certify" that your dog is an ESA is to get a note from a licensed psychiatric or therapist. Without that, your dog is considered just a pet and they do not have the same rights an ESA has. That being said, the laws for an ESA in the US are pretty vague so even if you did have a note, you could run into troubles with businesses you want to enter. It depends on where you live as well. I live in Washington state and people here love dogs and allow them in many stores, even pets. But in california, where I used to live, no one dared to bring and animal into a store unless it was a legitimate service animal. Anyways, I'm rambling. I have a cavalier who is considered my ESA because I have a note from my therapist. Don't waste your money (certapet charges like 190 dollars for a fake document?? Yikes) on fake papers
Thank you so much for sharing Herky’s journey. Some great information & your honesty about being a new Cav Mom was very refreshing. She is so beautiful & I’m sure if she could talk she would tell you how much happier she is at her fighting weight😉.
Herky The Cavalier Isn’t that the truth, I wouldn’t need anyone else on earth😁. I always send my parents links to your videos & today they told me about a movie on Hallmark Channel that have 2 gorgeous Cavaliers. I believe it was called Marrying Mr. Darcy and one was brown & white while the other was Black and Tan 💞💞
I have an apatite issue with my dog. She's a Chihuahua-lab mix if that's even possible and was 18 lbs. when she found me - she was a year old at that time. Princess was a street dog in a Mexican resort town, but she was barely surviving on the street. Leaving the condo, she magically appeared from under a car and expressed desperation - I had to run back in to get a can of tuna for her. As she was eating that, I took off for my daily walk and it was 6 hours before I returned - she was curled up in the doorway waiting for me. I took her inside and gave her another tuna until I could get dry food for her in the morning. I took her home and she gained weight so she's a bit over weight today. She takes a lot of doggie biscuits and hides them - so she always takes a big biscuit to bed with her. She should lose several pounds. She's been an amazing, intelligent and entertaining dog so we are very happy with her joining our family, but this is a case where the dog found me - she's so affectionate!!!
Vet also never told me my yorkie was overweight. I changed her portion accidentally when I changed her brand (of raw food) and she dropped weight. When we went for a check up I mentioned how she had dropped about a kilogram (she’s only 3,2 kg, so 1kg is a lot) and vet said “She’s at ideal weight now. She was pudgy before. I had made a note of that in her file.” So she’d made a note but never said anything to me. Maybe because I also don’t take criticism well...
my service dog lola needs to lose 5 pounds i changed her over to wet dog food today and i want her to build a bit of muscle because she is a chihuahua pitbull mix (she was adopted and thats when the shelter said) i try to exercise her as much as i can but i am overweight and my knees hurt very badly when i try to walk and depression dosent help either ive been doing counseling and taking meds i am getting alot better and my father is back home after 2 and a half years and when hes off of work we go walking a little bit with lola i am trying my best walk more and more and get us exercise lola isnt hugely obese just a bit overweight because my grandpa free feeds and ive been fighting with him for years
Sorry im late... because it was my 11th birthday yesterday😊 Anyway my dog hayden was acting strange the vet says theres nothing wrong with him and his just a little over weight😯is that normal? Its just that im worried🙁and im gonna try herky's weight lost😄 I just hope it works on hayden too😊
So can Pomeranians gain weight easily and I’m at that point. My baby is 19.5 and now hip dysplasia. Needs to get weight off. I don’t like feeding her dog food, medicine, or vaccines
I never had problems with Dusty's weight. Maybe because he was a male? I mean friggin' god my boy ate pizza, chips and other stuff.. I know it's not healthy for them, but he never had problems with it. The freaky thing about it was, that he looked healthy, he was healthy and his fur was pretty. I don't know how he made this but he was a very pretty boy for his breed. Many people asked me about his breeder. But not even a single puppy of them turned out so pretty as him. He was an adonis! oô Really! By the way Dusty was my first dog, too. You can see him at my profile picture. ;o
heya there guys.. honestly i guess i should be suprised or anything but..my king charles wights 22 kilograms..we walk every day, actually no,we run everyday! He literally walk whole day long, and somehow he cant lose any kg.
My fiance and I are thinking of getting a cavalier in the next few months. We are also in Montreal, would you recommend a reputable breeder (or yours)?
i love your dogs so much...t losing weight, do you think that by feeding herky some foods with fiber, perhaps feeding her some fruits & veggies, it might help
I also have a cavalier his name is benji and he is only a puppy. He is a ruby cavalier but i like blenheims aswell. He has a channel called benji. ruclips.net/channel/UCv9UzacU5EEYmOSO7c3J3Owfeatured
My buddy is a cocker spaniel and at 33lbs, vet told me he needs to drop around 5lbs so this video definitely helps. I want my boy to be healthy and live as long as possible so I'm going to work on his diet
Tell Herky I understand! I’m overweight and it’s a battle! Love the honesty in this video
If Herky can do it, so can you!

Thanks for sharing! My Hudson was 23, now 25. Glad to hear long it actually took. I will be looking into the dehydrated raw.
Your video has helped me more than anything I have seen. Thank you
quick question for you and other cavalier owners, how long is your dog from nose to tail? I can't find anything online and I'm trying to prepare for my new puppy 💕🐶
also want to say THANK YOU to you, your husband, Herky and Milton for all of the information in these videos, it has made me feel so excited and confident in getting my new puppy. Definitely has given me a lot of good information!

OH !!!!! COME ON THEY ARE ANGELS AND I LOVE YOU SO MUCH FOR THE MOST AMAZING THING YOU ARE DOING!!!!!!!!!
Ela Maria hello!
My cavalier is 2 and he is 35 pounds and it’s really bad but the vet never said anything about it 😞 so in two days I am starting his diet and I don’t know what to do
The vet saying nothing seems to be a trend. Be your dogs advocate! Watch the video again😊

I love this! Clover is 15 lbs but I think he could be one pound lighter. He eats Orejin but I like the idea of adding the dehydrated raw food!
It's amazing! Lots of options for you in the US :)
Crushed my heart to hear she came from a breeder. Humans will never learn.
I needed this thank you! Your dogs are gorgeous, they look so healthy... Good job, it’s very hard to get an overweight pooch to lose weight. You all rock,
Thank you so much! I think she is very happy at this weight :D
Love miltons collar! It really suits her! Also our vet said that Lacey "could do with losing a little weight" and we didn't know she needed to lose at least 4kg (8lbs)! Lucius Maximus thank you! Herky is super happy and I think she’s much healthier! 35 lbs is definitely too much for a cavalier
I know, I dont know the owners that well but I did talk to him about the dogs weight, I think he said they were getting him to lose weight but its taking a long time.
Good for her! You and your dogs have such a wonderful bond, I hope I have one as great as yours with my (hopefully soon) future Cavalier.
do you have the cavalier now?
@@Renderthewanderer Unfortunately, no. But I still want one in the future!
@@thatpomodorokid4980 I hope you get one soon.
I’m currently dealing with this issue with my pup. Thank you for you for the tips !

Honestly I really like chunky Herky. She's so cute no matter what weight she is as long as she's healthy. But it's good you're on top of her health.
Fat dogs aren’t cute Or healthy

Love your videos and how good Cavmom you are 🐶🐶👩🏻
Very similar to your experience my Cavvy is overweight now. :( I'm changing foods to this brand! Do rotate flavours or stick to the fish?
We always have fish for either Orijen or Canisource, and change the other one for another flavor if that makes sense :) Personal preference!
Hi Thanking you for sharing your video on your little fur babies feeding. Can you say how you feed them when they waken in the morning. do you feed them straight away? My cavalier weighs 32lbs, he really need to lose ,so thank you for the different foods.
Well my cavalier had thyroid issues that were not picked up on time. Now it's an uphill battle to get her to lose weight. Not that easy
How many times to you fed them ? Also does it matter if you don’t get the fish one ? Because I can’t find it all I see is the red meat one .-.
Do you feed them once a day or twice?
I have a cavachon and she puts on weight so easy. Maybe the is the cavalier in her!
Where can you buy Grand Cru dehydrated raw food in the US? Your dogs are gorgeous. Thank you so much.
Did I miss what brand of food you feed your dogs to lose weight?
I have a 3 year old king Charles cavalier who all of a sudden is overweight..he doesn't eat that much food..3/4 of a cup split between 2 meals..the vet said he is prediabetic..he never eats treats..I'm at a loss how to get his weight under control and I need to find a different dog food..the one the vet recommended doesnt seem to be helping

I think your girl should be around 15-16 lbs ! She's probably close to her max now, just keep doing what you're doing :) Well done!
My boy is 6 months and already 22 pounds. He was the biggest of his litter and his dad was big as well. The vet says he is a healthy weight though and he looks fit.
Sweet babies!!!
I loved this video. my dog is on her journey. her favorite treats are frozen green beans! :)
Merci super intéressant!
People have been so unkind about his weight:(
My 7 y/o Tri is also Piper! She is on a weight loss journey too. 3.5 # loss so far and weighs 29.5# now. We have a long way to go!🥴
When you said you gave Herky 3/4 of food a day, was that total including freeze dry and kibble?
Vivien Battye omg I love you so much l have a good time with my dogs
My 1st Cavalier Lady was slightly smaller than Rorie a Working Cocker Spaniel. Lady was much taller than your Herky. I got her in 92.
My cavalier angel weighs 30 lb she sure needs a diet we have to cut down treats which I make w peanut burger pumpkin 1 egg who wheat flour we give her cooked chic plus her dry blue wilderness but I am sure more exercise is needed help
I'd be curious to know how they're doing now, five years later.
who weighs more, male or female dogs
Can you show us how you dehydrate the food?!
Thank you so much for sharing Herky’s journey. Some great information & your honesty about being a new Cav Mom was very refreshing. She is so beautiful & I’m sure if she could talk she would tell you how much happier she is at her fighting weight😉.
That's so sweet, thank you so much for the support. I really wish Herky and Milton could talk ;)
Maybe because I also don’t take criticism well...
my service dog lola needs to lose 5 pounds i changed her over to wet dog food today and i want her to build a bit of muscle because she is a chihuahua pitbull mix (she was adopted and thats when the shelter said) i try to exercise her as much as i can but i am overweight and my knees hurt very badly when i try to walk and depression dosent help either ive been doing counseling and taking meds i am getting alot better and my father is back home after 2 and a half years and when hes off of work we go walking a little bit with lola i am trying my best walk more and more and get us exercise lola isnt hugely obese just a bit overweight because my grandpa free feeds and ive been fighting with him for years
I didn’t know you guys are from Canada
Sorry im late... because it was my 11th birthday yesterday😊
Anyway my dog hayden was acting strange the vet says theres nothing wrong with him and his just a little over weight😯is that normal? Its just that im worried🙁and im gonna try herky's weight lost😄
I just hope it works on hayden too😊
If Herky can do it, Hayden can do it too!
So can Pomeranians gain weight easily and I’m at that point. My baby is 19.5 and now hip dysplasia. Needs to get weight off. I don’t like feeding her dog food, medicine, or vaccines
your incredible how she lost weight quite quick when you think about it
About 1.5 years! I think it's not that quick but happy that we're able to maintain it now :)
Thank you now my dog can lose weight
My chihuahua is only 2lbs overweight and she looks so fat. She’s doing a raw diet now and I need to adjust it and walk her more.
You can see him at my profile picture. ;o
My dog quite a big dog is over weight so we’re going to be starting I get so mad at my mum bc she doesn’t understand coco beans and sugar are so bad
Will there be another video tommorow😊
heya there guys..

I think we have the same name. Lol. Love your channel ♥️♥️
Hey Mai! :)
Herky The Cavalier Hi!! How are you?!!
My fiance and I are thinking of getting a cavalier in the next few months. We are also in Montreal, would you recommend a reputable breeder (or yours)?
Raw foods !!! My baby boy does so well for it.
i love your dogs so much...t losing weight, do you think that by feeding herky some foods with fiber, perhaps feeding her some fruits & veggies, it might help
It's pretty easy to help your dog's lose weight. Just walk them and don't feed them tonnes. Cody used to be 11kg now is 8kg
Mai is queen 😍
Ashley! Thanks for watching girl :)
nessa is like milton, she doesnt put on weight. do you have any tips for that?
she already eats orijen kibble plus mixture of wellness and orijen freeze dried meat on top
Unfortunately not! We'll try to focus on that now that Herky's challenge is under control ;)
Do you and your husband speak fluent French or Quebecois??
