Ivo and Garlits are obviously 2 of the absolute legends of early drag racing. At one time, between the end of '63 and '69, I spent every waking moment at SoCal dragstrips (Lions, Irwindale, OCIR, Fontana & Pomona) so I saw them both quite a bit. I can tell you that T.V. Tommy, it was rumored by the early 70's, had gotten really spooked in the seat after a couple of bad crashes. Of course front-engine cars were always just a clutch explosion away from a catastrophic incident.
Island Dragway-----------I was there this past summer 2010--saw him fire up the dragster-saw him in the 60's -againest Ivo when Ivo had the car carrier with the Corvette on top===Lot of memories at Island--
Nothing compares to these old slingshots! I really dislike today's drag racing. These guys actually worked on and even built their own cars. I really miss and love those drivers and nostalgia drag racing in general. Tires smoking all the way down the quarter mile, awesome!
@ThomasDeLello I was there also and took photos of Don with his AA/FD on the scales with George Hurst and Ray Brock from Hot Rod magazine looking on . Years later at the 1985 Summernationals I gave the photos to Don's wife Donna in the pits along with others that she said they will use at his Museum of Drag Racing in Ocala Florida. That weekend was the Northeast Div points race were NHRA records are set and his time of 7.67 201.34 was the first official NHRA record over 200mph.
Oopps, hate it when that happens! Boo Boo in front of everybody. Utmost respect for both drivers. I saw them at OCIR many times and Pomona too. Great drivers and ambassadors of the sport.
Music? "Carl's Big Chance" from the Beach Boys All Summer Long album circa 1965. How many people knew that off the top of their head? But I can't name the guy that sits next to me at work.
+Jim Long Not by a long shot. Just happen to know a bunch of the Beach Boys more obscure songs. Most of the musicians in this song were session guys and a couple from the Wrecking Crew (Hal Blaine was one) doing a jam when the idea for this came up as a filler for the album.
Well, I did somma that in '68. at OC raceway. I had NO car. I rode a 33 HP Suzuki 250 cc street bike. Ya, medium fast for the day, 10.3 sec 1/4 mi...Outran a lotta A/gas cars including Corvettes. Ya with a 3 light handicap. 2 stroke, blue smoke and faster than anybody wanted to admit! All the same I was in the pits with Ivo and Garlits.........Fun times!
Big Daddy;s is on I-75 , one exit South of Ocala,fl . Great place to visit . Lot's of car's and stuff . No rip off . Big Daddy is always there walking round talking etc . !!
@ThomasDeLello look up a guy named paul venderly... hes from south mississippi, and a good friend of big's. paul went 202 one week b4 big while the two of them were testing for that race!
I read or heard about this in an interview a long time ago, and from what I recall this was not caused by Ivo or any distraction. Either the throttle stuck or there was some kind of fuel surge, but certainly an unforeseeable accident. I just don't remember the exact details.

I was working security at Capitol Raceway outside of DC in '59 and Ivo ran over my foot. I used to love the smell and noise of the top fuel !!

i was there when that happened, it sucked completely for them, but i heard what happened after and laugh on the ground to this day when i remember it
Is that rear engine one of Ivo's the rebuilt/replica of that one in '74 he did the infamous 'Upside Down & Backward' finish in at IIRC Pomona??

You'd play hell getting a new 250cc bike to run low 10s today, let alone in '68. I call bullshit on this.
This was drag racing
@musclecarloverjoeroc What happened after?
When they say "rubbin' is racing," I don't think they meant you were supposed to rub when you drag race!
Do any other engines do the cackle or just Chrysler style hemis?
Rose White Supercharged V8s burning nitromethane.
Hemis sound the best but almost anything on a decent amount of nitro will cackle.
NOTHING sounds quite like a HEMI on nitro 🤘🤘
Kurt Poblenz the zoomie headers have a lot to do with the cackle sound.
Old school vs (405) has nothing on old school🤣
What is the whole story here...? How did they settle it...?
Check out Bushmaster coming in to check on the Swamp Rat!
you guys need to get down to Jacksonville Florida, on I 95, south, watch for the bill boards, they'll guide you right to Big Daddy's museum

@@tencz57 It is mind boggling the stuff that is there.
Right at the exit....the sign says " Don Garlits Drag racing museum 1/4 mile➡️"....
Slingshots and Zoomies!
If that's what you call a crash, I'd hate to see what you call a horrendous accident - maybe a fender bender! - Oooh!
