All About Eve was Joe Mankiewicz's crowning achievement as a director and screen writer. He became embroiled in the debacle of Cleopatra ten years later and the failure of that Taylor/Burton film was almost fatal to his career. He continued to make films, including Sleuth with Olivier and Caine, but he never really recovered. Sunset Boulevard didn't win Best Picture because Billy Wilder's screenplay and the film itself was overtly critical of the Hollywood film industry's treatment of its established stars and its pioneers. Norma Desmond helped build the studio that she worked for and she was shunted aside for this year's model.
WOW, Dr Bunche presenting the award! One of the pioneers of the Civil Right Movement, and also one of the fiercest pre-UN activist. The first person of African descent to win the Nobel Prize.
Thank you for presenting the 1951 Oscars with Fred Astaire as its emcee, naming All About Eve as Best Picture for 1950, but, even more interesting, U.N. Ambassador Dr. Ralph Bunche, Nobel Peace Prize winner, was presenting that Best Picture Academy Award to Darryl F. Zanuck of 20th Century Fox. It doesn't get any better than this.
Great winner, although I think sunset boulevard was a little bit more deserving. These should have been the nominated films in my opinion: Sunset boulevard All about eve The third man The asphalt jungle Harvey
All About Eve is one of the best movies ever, that's for sure. But Sunset Boulevard is a masterpiece! It was PERFECTION in directing, acting, screenplay, everything. The greatest movie about Hollywood and also, it was Billy Wilder at his best. Sunset Boulevard should have won.
Jefferson Borges Everything you say in praise of Sunset Boulevard you could also say bout All About Eve which I personally prefer. I also think The Apartment is Billy Wilder at his best.
Jefferson Borges Preach! And The Third Man, while not nominated for Best Picture (wtf?), should've won Carol Reed Best Director. Joseph L. Mankiewicz winning back-to-back years for pretty standard directing efforts shouldn't've happened at all (really, as much as one can like All About Eve, was the stagy direction really better than Carol Reed for The Third Man or even Billy Wilder for Sunset Blvd?).
EisforEvil All About Eve's direction was pretty standard and stagy when compared to Sunset Blvd. and The Third Man (which should've won Best Director).
I'm not a director but some of the people here complaining that Sunset Boulevard should have won, which I do not agree. Why was AAE won over Sunset Boulevard? Simply, because for me, I think, ALL ABOUT EVE is far more realistic and have a universal story than Sunset Boulevard. In short, it is TIMELESS! #PleaseRemakeAllAboutEve
Jade Quest 2 years ago (edited) Everybody always has their favorite, as to who should have won the oscar, or which picture should have one. It's the difference between show business and sports. In sports, if you jump in the pool, and reach the other end first you physically defeat the other swimmers, and you get the trophy. In football, the teams that score the most field goals and touchdowns win the game. Very Simple. In the motion picture academy, in my opinion, to be nominated is a great honor. Ballots go out to all members of the voting Academy who can submit names for anyone they choose for nomination. To be nominated means that enough members who could have submitted anyone's name submitted yours. Once the nominations are made, it's narrowed down to a choice of five. Then it's more of a popularity contest. The nominees will probably get the votes of everyone involved in their film, and the members of the academy who favor them. They may not have seen all of the performances. There is no committee or group discussion to debate the merits of individual performances. There is no jury of their peers to discuss the merits of the nominee and decide by unanimous vote. Secret ballots are cast and the oscar goes to whoever gets the most votes. It's completely out of everybody's hands This may be why George C. Scott wanted nothing to do with the Oscars and did not accept his when he won. Also, the term was changed from "The winner is to "The Oscar goes to". That year "All About Eve" won because it got the most votes. Very Simple. As for me, I stopped watching award shows a long time ago. I stick to sports.
Naa, Judy Holliday deserved the win for delivering one of the best comedic performances ever in the category… It was a very competitive category that year though…
"All about Eve" didn't get 14 nominations for being a piece of chopped liver. I am amazed at the enthusiasts for "Sunset Boulevard," a fine movie but a movie that pales in comparison with "Eve," the film that combines great writing with superlative acting (five acting nominations). Sixty-six yeards later, "All About Eve" remains on a pedestal.
Everyone of us can be Eve Harrington; sweet and naive outside but manipulative and full of ambition inside. Everyone of us wear mask all the time and that was ALL ABOUT EVE was all about; in some point of our lives, we can be a villain. #PleaseRemakeAllAboutEve
Sunset Boulevard Should have won this Oscar BY FAR. Im not Saying all about eve is¨not a good Movie I Actually loved it, But I Think s´Sunset Boulevard waay more deserving! Sunset Boulevard is also argibly the best Movie of the 1950s and maybe in my top 10 greatest Movies OF all time!!! Sunset Blvd was robbed in almost every catagory!!!!

What a difficult choice: "All about Eve" or "Sunset Boulevard." I'm not sure how I would have voted; I love them both.
And the rest of the competition was first rate too.
Although I'm 51/49 in favor of Sunset Boulevard. Firmly so.
Fasten your seat belts. It's going to be a bumpy night.

Absolutely. And a timely positioned call for sober and temperate partisanship in the dawn of HUAC.
Great winner, although I think sunset boulevard was a little bit more deserving. These should have been the nominated films in my opinion:
Sunset boulevard
All about eve
The third man
The asphalt jungle
Harvey
Abdo Esper Fair rankings, but All About Eve isn't a better film than The Third Man.

Jefferson Borges Both are in my top 50, but SB is better. However, I don't think it should be disregarded as both are amazing in their own rights.
Jefferson Borges yes,indeed.
Tje introduction speech is even longer than the winner's one... what was the problem with the presenters of those days ?
Sensational Presentation at the Awards Ceremony, you'll Never Ever See Anything like this ever again Period!!!!!

I agree!
Sunset Boulevard was better done.
Please do not ever remake All About Eve.
Why the hell do you want a remake?
I'm on the side of "Sunset Boulevard".

It's my favorite movie of ALL time, Just perfect!
All about Eve has great producing.
This is incredible! Thank you.
Bette Davis should’ve won best actress for All About Eve as well.I was expecting to see her in this clip lol.
I Agree +++
@@Unknown-rz1sj either Bette or Gloria should have one. Judy was obnoxious.

All About Eve great film
@Diego Pisfil i know i agree i prefer Sunset Boulevard but All About Eve is still a great film
SUNSET BOULEVARD,should have won!!!!
Ralph Bunche. Wow. This show had class. What happened?
windbag...
Fred Astaire is not in his comfort zone.
Harvey and summer stock should have been nominated in my onpninion
Good movie, but it pales in comparison to Sunset Boulevard. Sunset Boulevard should have won.
Highly unusual to see an African American present The Best Picture Award in 1951 ... Or any other award for that matter ...
Highly unusual for whites to take diamonds away from Africa.

Sunset Boulevard was robbed !

What a long winded and boring speech. On TV today this would have been drowned out by the orchestra at the 1:00 mark.
Good Lord. What the hell was all that about?
Was that first 4 minutes of this really necessary??
Sunset Boulevard should have won
Sunset blvd. should have won
👌
This must have been when it went down hill allowing political speech
Dull speeches dull ceremony!!! 👎🏻
Yeah except it’s not 😂
