Coulda, shoulda, but didn't.. Won already, and he could have easily won for "IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE" but didn't.. No, not for "Harvey" ---- but I would have given him another Oscar for one of his Hitchcock roles, maybe. But then he also got an Honorary Oscar didn't he? No Spencer Tracy was awarded for "CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS" when for me Freddie Bartholomew was the whole show. Freddie Bartholomew gave a poignant performance in "CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS." William Holden should have won, but JOSE FERRER was not terribe as Cyrano. Maybe he won for the "NOSE" or by a NOSE --- like Nicole Kideman did for THE HOURS.
Superb performance there, too. Great scene--tossing drink into Fred MacMurray's face. I grew up in NY, saw all the Broadway plays, from 1948's South Pacific to 1960's My Fair Lady. But the best performance I ever saw was Jose Ferrer's Man of La Mancha, a traveling show, when it came to Dallas in around 1970-71.. It was as though that play was written for him, or that he was born to play Don Quixote. They don't make actors like him anymore.
William Holden was arguably better as Joe Gillis opposite Gloria Swanson in Billy Wilder's Sunset Boulevard than in Wilder's Stalag 17, which he won the Best Actor Oscar for the following year. Ferrer was a superb actor in a well mounted production.
MrImiller07 That might be so, but Jose Ferrer IMHO was one of the best if not the best performance ever in Movie for a novel character. It was as if he was born and destine to play the role of Cyrano.
Jose Ferrer was actor George Clooney's uncle by marriage. Ferrer's wife was the famous singer Rosemary Clooney. She and George Clooney's father Nick Clooney were brother and sister.
dflartist That just tells how awesome Ferrer was in Cyrano. I love Spencer Tracy. I am only in my early 30's but I love the classics. FOTB was a great performance by Tracy, but Ferrer put together one of the best performance of all time with Cyrano.
At 43 James Stewart was too young for the role in Harvey. He was still playing the role on stage in the 1970's - which would have been a perfect time to remake it.
This is actually the Oscar for movies released in 1950, the ceremony was held in 1951. And I think it's kind of odd how Ms. Hayes completely ignores Fred Astaire while he tries to discreetly disappear into the background. That was not well handled, in my opinion.
How is this odd? She is doing it the same way as presenters normally do. Ms Hayes was there to hand out the Oscar and focused on that task instead of looking over her shoulder to keep track of Astaire. They were both equally huge stars, and Astaire was the host of the show. Look at today's Oscars, hosts like Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg, Neil Patrick Harris etc introduce the presenters and then exit the stage, and the presenters don't interact with the host on stage. Hayes and Astaire later co-starred in a movie in 1978, "A Family Upside Down".
ghir younes The Oscars are always held the following spring for all the movies nominated the year before. This was in 1951 so it was for movies released in 1950. Streetcar was eligible the following year (1952).
This must have been a very hard choice. Spencer Tracy gave the best performance of his career in "Father of The Bride". Had he not won the previous two Oscars (neither of them were deserving) I would have given it to him for this role. Having said that, I feel William Holden was the major contender in "Sunset Boulevard".
Are you really that dumb? Tracy's previous two Oscars were richly deserved. Holden should have won for Sunset Blvd. Ferrer's performance was stagey, fake, and doesn't hold up. It was a TERRIBLE choice.
That was a quite an effective and heartfelt speech from a guy who wasn't even there in person.
