This shows one thing: don't push MLMers to leave their company, because they might need more time than you think. Be there for them and stay present until they're ready
As with any cult, separate out the cult from the person. Keep in contact, let them know your thoughts, but don’t push too hard.
Also, the other thing I would add to this is to also NOT PURCHASE A CENT from their business. "Just say no" and if they do not accept it, say no again. Keep saying no I am not interested and would like you stop asking. Do not block or unfriend unless it's really awfully persistent however at the same time. Holding firm to not spend a cent on this person's business will eventually also assist them to eventually see the light.

I'm only halfway through but this is one of the best anti MLM videos ever. I think it really shows how the average distributor doesn't see how deceptive the business model is because it is so widely accepted as how it works.
And I think since they don't have very many people under them, if any (I never did), they don't see the full impact of being towards the top vs towards the bottom.

This morning a video came up in my feed about how this one RUclipsr conned several other RUclipsrs who did collabs with her. She targeted mostly guys and was involved with at least one of them. Apparently the _con_ had a lot of followers so the others trusted her. She was an admin on at least one (I believe it was more than that) and deleted a lot of videos effectively deleting his monetization along with them. At one time the she was doing anti-MLM content but would flip-flop to whatever got the clicks.
I remember thinking about how many RUclipsrs I would trust with my money like that. Hannah was the first one I thought of. Like you said, it all fell into place.
THIS THIS THIS! Hannah is amazing already (also your friend Hannah seems so sweet and lovely!) but this really helped click it into place. When you say we felt it, WE SURE DID. Now having the bigger picture it clicks into place and I adore the work Hannah does now even more. ❤
This. Hannah is one of my favorite RUclipsrs and hearing how she kept her friend in mind, well it all makes sense.
I know Hannah has expressed a lot of shame in regards to her time in Plexus, but I hope she also takes pride and comfort in just how STRONG and self-aware she is. This is so crazy, I was with Plexus for 5 years from 2013-2018 and was 1 rank below Hannah. I continued watching other Plexus reps after I left and I recognize Hannah and knew the team she was on. I was very excited to watch this today!

EXACTLY!! Like that was covid year, everyone was already struggling, MLM or not. They absolutely needed folks to help hype up everyone and continue the cycle to keep members involved. Friend Hannah certainly had nothing to feel shame about the "pity invite".
Honestly, it takes a strong person to say, "these are the things I did; I thought I was helping, but I was really causing pain." So if you're willing to do that kind of introspection & then come here and tell me, "I know I'm a good person, I know my intentions are good," I'm highly inclined to believe you

I was a marketing major who had to cold call for one of my class assignments... I too also want to bury myself in a hole tbh, even though it was part of the industry training! To this day, I can't stand cold callers in any capacity, and once I finished my program I really realised how predatory and manipulative marketing in general is, no matter how "normal" it may be. I left that field right after, although I still use the skills I learned in other ways lol

The keeping your rank, but paying you as a lower rank is so crazy to me! This is clever on the part of Plexus because then they don't have ambassadors "losing rank" in front of their downline, and exposing the flaws of the business plan. It would likely keep people in their funnel longer, because the perception that the business "works if you work it" would take a lot longer show the cracks, because everyone would assume it is just them this happened to! Kind of an 'emperor's new clothes' type story there. Really appreciate you sharing this Hannah!
Yes, that's why they "allowed" to let her go on the emerald trip. They couldn't show that all their reps were losing, it would expose their flawed structure.
I worked there in IT for years, they specifically set up the system to focus on the highest rank you've achieved and everything is enrollment based. It's not about building a "business", it's about pushing more "welcome pack" sales with enrollments.
She is a good example that we need to remember. People who have gotten duped into being in a MLM are not "bad people". Thx for telling your story Hannah! ❤

MLM- Mormons losing money. It’s a hot market because there are sooo many full time stay at home moms.
@karinaz8756 A lot of MLMs are owned by Mormons and a lot of Mormons get wealthy from them. Scentsy for example. Their founders are Mormon and they are actually really amazing people. I love the company and the products tbh. I loved my time with Scentsy even if it wasn't majorly lucrative.
I heard the laws in Utah were also very lenient towards MLMs (as in, it's not that much of a risk to start one, and there are very little safeguards to prevent the most predatory practices compared to other US states and countries in the world, I don't think the laws are particularly helpful to the people at the bottom of the pyramid). And since there are so many MLMs there, that's a lot of rich, powerful founders who can lobby for the laws to stay as advantageous as possible for them. @@karinaz8756
The "Paid As" system is so insidious omg. Even when people were struggling to maintain a rank, you would never know and the whole system looks "stronger" because of it. Absolutely wild!!

People like Hannah here are why I never hate the distributors, but do hate the companies for preying on people.
Well, some of them are pretty vile. Like the woman who was in a "Top Fails" video for exploiting her children for MLM content, just to give 1 of many examples.
But yeah, Hannah's friend, Hannah, is a lovely person who made a mistake and I'm sure many of the women who find themselves in MLMs are as well.
Hannah joined plexus when she was 20. 20 year olds are essentially children in some aspects, or at least I was when I was 20🤪 I could’ve been duped so hard to join an MLM and not understand why it’s wasn’t a good idea.
Definitely. And she said the woman who recruited her was much older which makes me think that she intentionally preyed on Hannah being young, naive, and looking up to her. So gross.
In high school (18-19) I was giving my email/address away to all these colleges and companies at a job fair.... Right afterwards, there was an MLM that wrote a very business-like email that says I was "accepted" to sell knives. Luckily my parents knew it was an MLM but I remember being salty I wasn't allowed to take this amazing business opportunity to earn money 🙃
I wish I could anonymously send this to a friend of mine who is in her 3rd MLM. I hope she sees the light one one day like Hannah has.

The things that is never really explored is after all that time, did Hannah understand that recruiting and manipulating people into the mlm was the way to go? I mean yes she was innocent the way she was recruited and started. But after some time she had to have realized that being the "bad guy" is the way to go higher up in the mlm. The pressure to do all you can to hit rank is a lot on a person, but that means the downline usually get late the pressure too.
I figured out what I was doing a few months into my mlm. I was the bad guy and I made sure I picked my words carefully, I knew who to target and who to talk to. Me, my upline, and a bunch of my direct downline (those I personally recruited) knew exactly what we were doing and we all planned how and what was working and then passed that info around.
I wish this is discussed more because that needs to be exposed to show how the mlm structure turns good people into the not so kind "hun bot"
I think she touched on it. She mentioned that she started seeing people as “potential recruits “ and not as friends or just meeting someone new. The MLM penetrated her entire mindset.

Well this was a wild video for me. I started watching your content probably 6 months ago and always thought it was kind of fun we both grew up on Washington. Never did I expect we went to the same high school and had a mutual friend in common 😂 Guest Hannah’s family and mine were very close growing up and our little brothers remain BFFs. The whole reason I starting watching your videos was because the only things I knew about MLMs was from years of seeing your guest Hannah post about Plexus and was curious about what it was all about. I’d always thought it definitely wasn’t for me, but if it worked for Hannah, great for her, and we weren’t close enough anymore to me to have a good conversation with her about it. So this was… fascinating to finally hear the whole story. Thanks for sharing and opening up Hannah, and I’m always wishing the best for you 💙 and thanks RUclips Hannah for your lovely and informative content!

A friend of over 10 years has quit her job to become a „lifestyle coach“ which is it’s own cult and she also joined 2 MLM‘s. She is living in a toxic positivity bubble, she spent $ 10’000 on a so called masterclass and says it was an invest in herself, she also thinks that having zoom calls and creating „experience packages“ for her website that get more more expensive is actually working. She has no skills or credentials in this field but is a lovely person and it makes it even harder to watch. I am watching those anti MLM videos to educate and prepare myself for the moment she weaks up and needs support. Keep up the good work, it‘s so helpful ❤

I’m 33 minutes in, and I LOVE this video! The self reflection from your friend, your direct but also incredibly kind questions. It’s nice to see someone lead with compassion first, that’s what anti-mlm should be!! Not making fun of people that get manipulated. Education and compassion first, always!

I know that you’ve heard this a million times, but your approach is truly why you are my favorite anti-MLMer and one of my top five favorite RUclips personalities of all time. I’ve watched so, so many anti-MLM creators who claim not to be making fun of the huns, but they blatantly and repeatedly do. It’s gaslighting, basically. “Ew, look at her teeth. No, I’m not making fun of her. I’m just pointing out her gapped teeth.” I don’t like that and I don’t respect that. It’s not kind and it’s totally unnecessary. You are so humane and so gracious with this and now we can see why. Sincerely, from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU for what you do and for clearly being a kind friend!

I completely agree! Hannah is so kind and compassionate, and she can be snarky at times, but you can tell that she's still separating the behavior from the person. I sometimes like watching CC Suarez, but it does bother me when she makes comments about people's looks or other ad hominem comments because I think it detracts some from her valid points about the behaviors. She does show compassion, but I think making that type of comments takes away from the message.
@@schrdngrskat3847Not to start drama, but CC is actually who I was referring to 😂 I don’t like how she’ll make fun of their eyes, hair, clothes, etc. and then try to convince us that she’s not actually making fun of the person. Like, we have ears and a brain, ma’am. Don’t pee on my leg and tell me it’s raining!
I just can’t fathom how people can afford to spend $300+ on supplements a month, especially when a lot of the women buying/selling Plexus are stay at home moms. I tried to make sense of the compensation plan, and I couldn’t figure out how sellers could possibly sell plexus and not lose money every month.

@@aw4417 Plexus needs to lower their absurd prices (their “triplex” supplements cost as low as $25 together at the grocery) and stop using an MLM “employment” model that just screws people out of their money. Even this sweet lady who was an EMERALD, is on here saying that over the six years she worked for Plexus she overall LOST money, even being at the second highest “rank” and having 200 people working underneath her. She even said that within a month, HALF (100) of those people dropped out, and she lost her emerald status just like that.
We don’t and we believe we are until we actually look at the truth and then it’s so embarrassing. People either quit completely or they continue on trying to prove they can make money….
I didn’t drink the full Arbonne Kool-Aid, so luckily when I never made money, I didn’t go on trips to make more money and spend more money to make money…
But man it can suck you in if you’re not careful, I almost got sucked in .
I feel bad I wasted my savings on it too 🤦♀️…. Granted, that was 15 years ago.
I was also working full-time and making my own money and investing my own money in Arbonne but I definitely wasted my income … it could’ve gone to so many other things.
Lesson learned …. Now I am the stay at home mom and you can’t convince me to do anything like that… I sooner have habitual yard sales of my leftover extra stuff and sell it on eBay rather than another MLM.
You are one of the only anti-mlm creators I watch consistently because you always have a compassionate, yet honest approach. It makes so much more sense now seeing your friend Hannah and how she was always in the back of your mind. I’m so thankful she decided to share her story! That was so brave and vulnerable of her.

The problem i see with a lot of anti-MLM creators is they say "statistically, it's unlikely people will make money" but thats a bad way to describe it... they are DESIGNED for the people at the bottom lose money just so the people at the top can make money. 90+% of people losing money is BY DESIGN, it doesn't just happen by chance. And when you say "most people don't make money in MLMs", they easily just say "that's because those people don't work hard enough"... but they are designed so it doesn't matter how hard people work, the vast majority have to lose money so those at the top can get it
Yes because most of the money flows within the pyramid, therefore the money flows from the bottom (monthly purchases by distributors) to the top. Well said
The day I learned that looking at Arbonne and plexuses financial statements, and the income statements was the day I refuse to ever be a part of another “recruitment” for any business
I think this is the single best piece of anti-MLM content I’ve ever seen. Hannah, you were a fantastic interviewer, and I say this as someone who was a TV news anchor interviewing people daily myself. OMG you could've interviewed me about my time with BODi and it would've been almost identical. The tasks they give you to do, the conventions, the "lifetime" vs "paid" rank, the end of month hustle. THEY ARE ALL THE SAME.

This was such a powerful conversation. The thing I kept realizing was how much your friend Hannah talked about the negative feelings that surrounded so much of her time in Plexus. The stress, the guilt, the shame, the strain it put on relationships, all of these underlined every story she told. I can see how easy it is to get caught up in a whirlwind of activities and then suddenly realize that it's not the shiny, happy facade that it looked like. I wish her the best!
I am a huge anti MLM follower and my BFF is in one. We have had chats about it and it comes down to our friendship is more important than each of our perceptions of MLM’s.
I was an"ambassador" in Plexus. Never even reached "Silver". Almost but never quite had enough pv. But I remember my friends going to convention, because we were encouraged to go cause of the energy you can then take with you and grow ur business. My friends were very low on the totem pole and were basically left to their own devices while the high ups on our teams went to all the events and parties and special things that were only for higher ranks,and got all the gifts and swag. And they went in search for food,and of course it's Vegas and everything was SOOOOOO expensive. I can remember being glad I hadn't gone. Didn't need those charges on my cc, thank you !
The discussion about motives is really interesting. People in other types of work (actual business owners, employees, contractors, etc) are usually pretty upfront that they're trying to make a living, it's strange how some MLM people will avoid that "I'm making a profit" angle - there isn't anything wrong with making a living on its own, just with doing it in a predatory way.
I’ve had friends that do this to me or churches, in order to convince me to do things that aren’t in my best interest, but in theirs….
Even my last social circle I noticed that we were only going to one person‘s house all the time and it was 40 minutes away from most of us and so I brought up the fact a hole that we should be sharing the location or going to to a central location that’s equal for all of us. The person who is “hosting” turned down initially with the idea that “it was in her heart” to have mom’s come to her house so they could relax… but that never really happened because all the kids would run amok, and we would end up having to discipline them.
I finally started asking more questions and directly told her that I needed to have the social events at my house once in a while … she finally broke down and tried the “my heart is” discussion, but I pressed further, and she admitted that she just didn’t want to be bothered to get her kids together to go to somebody else’s house.
That’s when I politely told her none of us feel that way and we are getting burned out. At least I’m getting burnt out constantly having to bring my kids 40 minutes away every single week and sometimes twice a week. It would be helpful if she would be willing to sacrifice like we are, and come to the other women’s houses.
She refused quoting “her heart” .
I knew at that point was the end of the social group because this was unsustainable, especially for me … my other other friend is willing to sacrifice in order to “keep the group together“… but a lot of the other people don’t have husbands and I saw a quote in the group chat I stayed in about how people were so willing to go long distances to keep churches/social groups together in poor countries.
We aren’t in a poor country and I can build a new social structure around my local area … in fact, I reached out to some friends in my neighborhood. I had lost touch with, and things are going a lot better because we take turns…. it’s so much better when people share the load instead of try to prove everybody what they want is everyone else’s best interest when in fact, it’s just in their best interest.
I feel like we can get this way sometimes when we aren’t honest with ourselves … and that’s fine because we all do that. The problem arises is when someone kindly shows you that it’s not fair or equal that you continue to insist people do it your way… that’s when it gets dysfunctional and can hurt others.
I feel like women can sometimes trick themselves and be tempted into this kind of pattern in more than just business or MLM’s … it’s definitely present in some social groups as well.
We should really be doing better at holding ourselves personally accountable, and thus holding others accountable for a give-and-take in any kind of relationships. We are in and to be willing to be honest with ourselves, when we are the one taking advantage of others, and not realizing it… go ahead and make it right and reach out and apologize… it does help
(Friend) Hannah is so strong for being so vulnerable. So much respect for how open she is willing to be.
I got happy tears for Hannah when she verbalized how messed up the structure in an MLM is and how she did nothing wrong but still couldn't make it. She had quit but in that moment she really saw it wasn't her fault, it was designed to fail eventually. Thank you both for sharing.

I think other MLMs also do the thing with ranks where they have like, a lifetime achieved rank and then a current rank. You only get paid as your current rank but you are encouraged to present yourself at whatever your highest achieved rank is. Definitely misleading.

Wow. I hadn't thought about the resume aspect. Once you're out of the MLM, all the years you spent there, all that hard work, it should count for something, but putting "Emerald in Plexus" isn't exactly a qualification for ANY job outside of the industry.
I think Hannah's willingness to speak so candidly about her experiences is truly inspiring. She's living proof of one of the most important lessons I've learned since discovering the anti-MLM movement: It's not the people. It's the business model. The business model is the problem.

The trips should have been added to their "income" in full for tax purposes. I used to work for Plexus Corporate, yes I am ashamed. Profit sharing though kept me from having to work 2 jobs.
The irony here is that you were in MLM *corporate* making actual money, meanwhile the MLM Huns constantly demonize corporate 9 to 5 jobs as being dead-end and not profitable. Literally the opposite is true.
Things are changing at corporate. New CEO. It's definitely a different place than it was 5 years ago. So sad... there was a lot of potential.
Why would you be ashamed?
I was a plexus employee until very recently. The internals is a mess at all levels. So many employees have been fired or left that there's not enough people to even know how the business runs.

A cold message is when you reach out to someone about the products or business that you’ve never talked to before. I would consider you a warm market person because you guys were friends.
Warm market is friends and family.
Cold market is strangers.
Like making cold calls in sales.

Ex plexus hun here! Hi! I have a friend still in it and she asked her friends who quit buying products from her to sign up again under a different email to help reach her rank. And she definitely had uplines buying under her as well. She practically begs on fb for people to help her reach her goal. I’m glad I finally realized I was losing money and theres no free trips. I watched my friend cry wondering how she was going to get to her free trip bc she couldn’t afford it and then have her mom repeatedly bail her out financially many times for similar situations. She brags on fb about how much the extra incomes helps her family which is not true. Plexus is very deceitful. Hopefully she realizes she’s supporting the business model by buying products. Baby steps tho. I get it. It took me awhile to finally quit them and cancel my ambassador account.

I think what friend Hannah said about Plexus having a spot in her heart and at the same time having lots of resentment towards it is a perfect explanation. It's like a toxic relationship, of course you will have some good memories, because if everything was bad no one would stay.

49:30 Interesting that Hannah didn't know if the incentive trips appeared on her 1099 as non-employee compensation! This was almost certainly the case.
A HS friend does plexus and I feel annoyed for her. She is beautiful, and so funny. She deserves more. I haven’t seen much of a change despite her doing it for years, and I just wonder what these people are really thinking when it doesn’t work for someone? But because if the community it gives maybe they value what else the MLM offers?

How frustrating that people are losing years of their life and ruining so many relationships with friends and family and for what? The ego of these people who think it does not apply to them. Ugh! That is the source of so much damage! I am glad that these friends can still be friends. Best of luck to both of them! Keep the positive message going!
It's not ego that makes people think it doesn't apply to them - it's hope and brain washing and cognitive dissonance. They're victims even if they're unlikeable as ffff and also victimising their own downline as well, they are still victims of the mlm.
A lot of these women have the people pleaser gene. They care too much about what other people think.
People are just really really bad at predicting chance. It's why raffle tickets work so well, or scratchers. Nobody is completly immune to this. It's just not something we're good at as a species.
You were both so kind and loving with each other. To the Hannah who bemoaned the time you lost: I’m in my 40s and finishing my second bachelor’s degree and planning on starting a masters program soon. It isn’t too late!

This is ironic to me because I became anti MLM because of a high school acquaintance who sells plexus. She sold it for years and nothing changed (she was using the weight loss angle) until she got a gastric bypass. She was transparent at first but then quietly stopped mentioning it and only mentioned plexus with her progress photos. My hopes when I share anti-MLM content is that she will see it and eventually leave, too.

I know you’ve mentioned several times that MLMs seem to go to Atlanta a lot for their conventions. It’s true. And I actually work in hotel sales in Downtown Atlanta. Specifically, our hotel is attached to a huge convention center. So we see a lot. Personally, I’ve seen Optavia, Primerica, Rodan and Fields, and Monat. I’m also not sure why they come to Atlanta so much- maybe we are cheaper than other destinations.

Also I love that she referred to stage of life rather than "season", haha. There are great new phrases and words that truly fill a need, but I see no need to replace perfectly good words that work perfectly well. I do realize I'm being needlessly critical of a stupid thing. I love this. My sister did the same thing with me - waited and loved on me until I was ready to leave my MLM and now we chat about it together and there is so much closeness there - so much respect for you Hannah and also your friend for being so strong and sharing her story. I relate to a lot of it!
MLMs are ran like cults (thus the term commercial cult) and as someone raised in Pentecostal cult, you can't pull anyone out before they're ready. It is why logic and compassion are so important.
Growing up with parents who were in an mlm since before i was born, this interview helped me understand some things and some choices my parents made, so thank you for this video!
"Be in the room" must be a buzzword in Plexus. There were similar sentiments in Amway / LTD. There was so much pressure to "get around the heat" (same concept) and when you qualified for those events half the training was on how to "create FOMO" in your team who didn't make it.
Such a great video. It was nice to see you two together. It really solidies and gives a good example of how most people in MLMs have friends and family and that the compassion is important. A lot of people just need time, and those that dont want out ever, then it may be best to just give it space
