  • Do you resemble a narcissist? The narcissist is comprised ONLY of a series of masks or personas. There is no “real” narcissist. Prosocial/communal or antisocial are both masks. The reason (etiology) is the failure of separation-individuation.

Everybody has been conditioned by their dysfunctional families. And most people are not individuated. You see most 60 year old sons are glued to their mommies. There is no seperation individuation in our society. We are all playing roles given to us by our families. It's rarely a person breaks through their mask whether narcs or codependents. The codependents have a higher potential to come to the other side and rebel against their people pleaser/doormat mask. And make their own persona become authentic true self.

I was talking to my therapist and quoted you. Don't overanalyze she said..I was concerned that I was developing paranoid delusions. I guess I am just a baby seal. She did tell me if it feels wrong, it is wrong. We are the sum of what fragments other people gather and reflect to us.

If one attempts to be the performer as in “reciprocal interactions “ with a narcissist then they are casting pearls upon swine because nothing comes back relating to your point of view, shallow words may come back without feeling thereby blocking incoming calls.

    Another excellent video.
Whilst most others are either victim playing covert narcissists or are only able to dabble with the behaviours, only Vaknin is able to get to the root of it. He gets to the core of the disease and not simply focus on the symptoms.
I am sure many like me are able to better recover from their abuse with this enhanced ground breaking knowledge.
Brilliant work Sam, keep going, never take a backward step.
Sam, I have a question. You have mentioned various times that BPDs and Psychopaths most likely have a genetic component but there is no such evidence with respect to Narcissists.
What about the Narcissistic Psychopath (Malignant Narcissist), is there a genetic component there ,? If not that would make them one of the most evil people around.
    Please share your opinion.

As an only child i grew up egocentric...but I learned that being kind and nice wuould make people to love me and not be agressive...maybe it was at first manipulation and later it became my personality . I don´t remember being another way. Of course I have bad moments and bad reactions sometimes as anyone else, i´m human you know?...but is a very safe way to walk in life...maybe narcisisstic people can do it...an get used to...Don´t you think so ?

I just decided that I am a narcissist because of the list of characteristics. I thought it was because my parents didn't love me when I was under age 3. But the big complex trauma was when my father sexually abused me from age 11 to 13, and I was an only child. Is BPD very similar to narcissism? I have chronic depression and a therapist. I'm 72. Maybe not worth trying to change.

Prof. Vaknin, Is the automatic switching in a narcissist driven, on the one hand, by a compulsive attempt to gain narcissistic supply, and on the other hand, by both a reflexive avoidance of narcissistic injury and existential fear of narcissistic mortification?

    I have question.
Otto Kramberg and you state that essentially NPD and BPD are the same disorder so. How can we to conceive that NPD person doesn’t have a True Self and in the other hand BPD person has a true self?
