- Idli Using idli rava or rice rava - This idli cannot be compared to the traditional idlis made by soaking rice and dal but this comes handy when you run out of time or too lazy to use the wet grinder. I have made it in mixie and it was super soft and delicious. It tastes more like the idlis we get in hotels. Do try and leave your feedback.

highly recommend this method and the consistency she shows in this. I would also add left over white rice when grinding adds a nice flavour to the idli

Rice Rava is the arisi kurunai? Is it the one v use for making arisi Upma? If not what is that n how to make it at home?
Rice rava is arisi kurunai only. I use that for making arisi upma only. For making this idli, I use only store bought rava as it is more like a fine rava. I prefer this for making idlis.

Hi all, check with u guys after mix all ildi rice urad dal after mixie than overnight need to put at regrigerator? Sorry am never try do this..am chinese but really love indian foods so much
Hi, Please do not put the batter after mixing the idli rice and udad dal in the fridge. It must stay at room temperature all night or it will not ferment. So keep it outside on the counter or if you are in a cool country ,in a slightly warm place so that it ferments, rises and Idlis become soft.

You can make idli rava at home. Just grind rice like rava and sieve it in a sieve used for rava to remove the fine powder. Regarding idli rava brands in US, I have no idea. I will enquire and update.

Hello! I have followed the recipe exactly. But my batter is yet to rise after 10 hours. We live in India but its just before spring here so a bit cold. Any solutions?
Read the first comment. I have given solutions for people living in cold places.
I soak both equal no. of hours. No fridge. 2.5 cups rice rava and 3/4th cup urad dal. I make in mixie every week
I put one is to three ratio of udad dal and rava.
No need of squeezing rava just remove excess water.
Should we finish the batter same day after fermentation or can we store a day in fridge?
You can store it in the fridge and use it within 3 days.

To prevent mixie from getting heated. If the mixie gets heated. The batter will not be affected by the heat.

Available readymade in all grocery shops. Ask as idli rava or rice rava. It is there in Nilgiris supermarket also.

Wash idly rice , drain well and dry it on a cotton cloth(saree or dhoti)...once it gets dry , grind in mixie to a rave like consistency and store

Sometimes it gets little brown colour spots in the batter , why does this happen.
Because u r not mixing soda properly. If u want to add soda don't put directly in batter,mix soda with little water and then add in to batter.

How to make rava at home mam?
Grind idli rice to rava consistency. Then sieve using a rava sieve. If you are particular, you can wash rice well, dry it in shade and then grind it to rava consistency. It is available readymade in nilgiris, big basket etc.

Yes. After soaking, keep the dal in fridge for an hour and grind. It will give volume to the batter.
I grind the rice rava first in mixie n then grind the urad dal

Hi. Thanks for the recipe. So the average ratio of urad dal:rice rava is 1:3. If I wish to increase dal content, can I try 1:2 ratio of dal:rava? Why is it necessary to refridgerate soaked urad dal? Also, the cloth you have used is regular cotton or muslin/cheesecloth? Kindly guide, ma'am. Thanks in advance.
If you want to increase, you can double the given ratio. When grinding in mixie, it is good to refrigerate the soaked dal for some time so that the mixie will not get heated. Also you will get fluffy batter. You can use any soft cotton cloth. Even soft cotton dhothi cloth works. Wash well, cut to the size of the mould n use it.

Did you soak the idli rava well and grind the urad dal until fluffy. Spiltted on the top is not a matter, may be due to over cooking.

When cooked in idli cooker, as you say 15 idlis takes only 15 mins because we are cooking all the idlis in one go. But when one does not have idli cooker, first batch will take 15 mins, the second batch will take less time.
