- Louisiana is a State rich in culture, but few realize how diverse the area is for its natural wonders. This trip I check out Kisatchie Nation Forest for free camping, wildlife and relaxation. Unfortunately I also experience the wrath of Mother Nature!
For the record, the "Armageddon" lightning bolt was fake! All other lightning, thunder and weather events were real.

Nobody's there because we want it that way. 😉 I live in Natchitoches and Kisatchie Bayou is about 30 minutes away. Iv been going there for 17 years. Good to see out of towners checking it out. There's much more to see considering it's 460,000 acres. Enjoy
I live in Louisiana. These campgrounds are packed only for the opening day of deer season... pretty much the rest of the year they’re empty. We go ride and relax all the time in these areas.
Always enjoy your videos and nature photography.
OMG, I heard the slug chewing!
The moth was stunning. Nature’s complexity and creations are amazing.
I really enjoyed the video. I live in Pineville, LA. It is a lovely place in the Winter, spring and fall, Summer not so much, to hot and humid.
the sounds of slugs chewing on fungi-- fabulous! That luna moth- stunning! Great video- again Slim!
Wasn't the slug eating sounds great....I wonder how difficult it was to get the slug 'micked'??? lol
Ooooooooh another goody!!!!👍👍
Slug chewing his dinner - good one! Beautiful camp there.
Growing up in the Midwest, but now living in Idaho, caused me to reminisce about the smells of a hardwood forest with all that leaf litter underneath the canopy. And I sure do miss the flowering dogwoods and redbuds in the spring. I know a lot of gardeners curse the armadillo for reeking havoc on their gardens, but he was a charmer just going about his business and sucking up those juicy worms and grubs. And the luna moth was gorgeous! Another wonderful example of all there is to see if you just take time to look. Thanks Slim.
Nothing better than seeing a sign that tells you that camping is FREE !
I was camping a few years back in kisatchie in October a huge storm came in early in the morning I had to get under a bridge.. and years ago I camped during a tropical storm it was crazy. My buddy James and I were pretty lit lol
A slug makes audible sound when it eats...who would have thought!? Another great adventure, thanks Slim.
Did not expect to see another fantastic upload this morning!
YAY!!! WE LOVE YOU SLIM!
That would be thunderstorm heaven for me
if you ever come thru WV it'd be worth your time to check out Cranberry Campground, located spanning across Webster and Nicholas counties, they have indivual camp sites along the river about a mile apart, thousands of acres of back country to explore and some of the most beautiful mountains. I used to go there every year and think you probably would like it too.
At the beginning you said something like, if you like flowers, Spring in Louisiana is the place to be. That's my home state and my immediate thought was, yes, but you better also love storms. And then... Glad you came through the storm okay. My Aliner bears lots of little dings from hale storms here in Southeast US. Those dings don't bother me. Am just grateful the camper held up so well. The beauty of our forests and parks are worth living through nature's temper tantrums. Thanks for sharing your adventures.
Thanks for the virtual trip back home ... haven't seen it in ten years.
I had to laugh when you put your hands to your ears during the hail storm .... not laughing at you but with you ... it reminded me of being in the metal warehouse when a hail storm and flooding rains hit ... I did what you did. Couldn't hear anything for twenty mins after it stopped. LOL. Luna's are special.
Armadillo! So cool!
And the slug chewing, amazing! Thanks for your excellent A+videos
Slim, welcome to my state. That must have been last Thursday. They were predicting that storm for a week. In parts there were 75 mph gusts. Up north around Shreveport and Monroe I was told that it hailed golf ball size for most of the day. I live down south just off the I-10 corridor between Lafayette and Baton Rouge in Cajun Country. We got 4” of rain but no wind or hail. Sorry for the hail damage on your camper. If that weather wasn’t coming through, you wouldn’t have been so lucky to have the place to yourself. Thank goodness one of those pine trees didn’t snap off and land on you. They are bad about that. I have no pine trees around my house for that reason. Hey, thanks for the great vids and, please, keep them coming ! Safe travels. 👍 ✌️ 🇺🇸
Wow, now this was an interesting video. The thunderstorm with the lightning brought back fond memories of camping with my grandparents in their Sears canvas tent back in the early 1970’s. Thanks
I was camping in a pop up at Brazos Bend State Park many years ago when a bad storm blew in. Rather than sit around and wait to get squashed by a tall Texas pine tree, I got in the truck and headed to open ground. Luckily no trees fell on the trailer, but I wasn’t about to sit around and chance it. When in doubt, always get out and head to higher ground. Trailers can be replaced. Lost lives cannot!
Safe travels
HAve not seen a Luna Moth. Wow!
Nature is AMAZING. Thanks for this.
Ahh ... yes ... April in Louisiana where the weather can go from clear blue skies in the morning to a two day torrential downpour before noon with 30 to 40 mile per hour winds. You are lucky, Slim, I did it once in a cloth tent ... not fun at all ... never again. I lived in southern Louisiana for 12 years until I finally retired from the life as a boat captain. The "missing" people, by-the-way were all in the lowlands tending their crayfish traps. They stay in fish camp lodges and know better than to try to tough it out in a tent or camper. Late March and early April is when the crayfish come out of their holes to spawn, spurred on by the high water in the creeks and low lying flatland. People shut down their businesses to go set and tend their traps for two to three weeks. In lower Louisiana (at least) life revolves around hunting, fishing and trapping, and the daily work grind is just a way to occupy your time in-between.
I love hearing the natural music of the forest. The slug chewing was amazing! And what a pleasure to see the lush, green, colorful contrast to the desert!
It’s always amazing to me how something as fragile as a butterfly can survive high winds and hail. Nice job of showing what springtime in the south is like. Not only in the sometimes violent weather but also the beauty of our natural environment. But your right, the dog days of summer are a whole ‘nother matter.
I laughed so hard about the pit toilet. Also camping in Paradise to surviving Armageddon was so funny. One minute you are in blissful, serene Heaven and the next minute you think you are gonna die! Another great video Slim! Thank you!
Really Enjoy your Adventures and your Poetic Speeches of Nature @ Boon-docking.
Hey Slim , you need to check out northwest (the third of the state) Arkansas on your trip across the south. There are over 200 waterfalls along with lots of other things to see and do. Search the Ozark National Forest of Arkansas | Explore the Ozarks & the Ouachita National Forest, an Arkansas National Forest - State Parks. Hope you can make it !!
Thanks! Was thinking of the Ozarks. SP
The armadillo was fun, but WOW, that moth was incredible. Thanks for sharing it!
Good thing you did make it out of Texas Slim, we had Tornado's here by us. Franklin Texas got hit pretty hard. We are at Fairfield State park and it got pretty scarie for a while.. But it sure is all worth it, isn't it? We have been living for 10 yrs park hosting and just traveling Texas right now. We love Nature and the outdoors. Take it over people any day lol.... Such Beauty... Thanks for sharing...
Such an unusual looking little moth! Gaia..gotta love her! peace..
Another dose of peace and inspiration. Thank you Slim.
Forget boondocking in a blizzard hello boondocking in a tornado 🤣
Cheers ✌️
We Southerners don't go camping when there's a chance for thunderstorms. That's why the park was empty. Beautiful video - you hit that area at the right time for spring blooms.
I love the shots of the flowers and ferns and such. Beautiful stuff! The Louisiana Buck Toothed Slug - I could do without... haha
Thank you. Great video. I wish my husband liked camping. So peaceful.
Though I've lived in GA since 1968, I grew up in Alexandria. As a boy scout, I camped in Kisatchie, and I must say you are spot on with your descriptions. Good job!
love the slug shot - and chewing sounds!
Hi Slim What a Scary Storm..!! I am glad you are fine And the Flowers are Beautiful God bless you 💖
I love the variety of colors, the super saturated yellow of that fungus, the fluorescent green of the Luna Moth, the delicate pink of the azalea blossoms. I’m glad you enjoyed Louisiana. Where I live is also very wet, very swampy, very humid. The bugs are big, the plants are big, the air is heavy, and it is for sure not everyone’s cup of tea but I love the fecundity of it, hard to appreciate maybe but it’s own kind of marvel nonetheless.
So glad you got to enjoy some of the peace and quiet time.
What beautiful plants!
💯🏆📹 Great video ❗ Fantastic🐛🐝 wildlife 📸 and impressive pictures of the 🌼flowers 🍃, trees 🌲 and weather🌩🌪 too ❕
As always...Mesmerizing !
Thanks for taking us along very nice area with the woods and flowers,I love to see nature with so many flowers in the wild.
Maybe the campgrounds were empty because of the weather forecast?
Pam Love Exactly. Came here to say this. It was projected to be so bad down here that they canceled school.
Great video almost made me home sick, glad you didn't stuck in the gumbo mud
I assume you've crossed the Big Muddy by now. You were smart to plan your travels to Southeast during the last of our cool weather days. Might not enjoy it in July? Ha, try May through September! Like we say: It's not the heat, it's the humidity! Don't forget to inspect all your nooks and crannies for deer ticks.
Passing through Mobile, AL? Could work in a delta or coastal kayak paddle/seafood feast if you have a slot.
Your videos keep getting better and better, I dont even turn on the tv anymore just watch the Slim show on you tube. Thanks for taking us along.
Yep ! That's springtime in Louisiana ! I've seen it raining on the back side of the roof while the front side is still dry ! Saw it this spring !!! Thanks for the great video !
oh man you got all the nasty stuff but the luna moth and that armadillo made up for it. You shoot some Pretty nice vidiography to watch.
Watched it again - such a nice one. Love the Armageddon and the Luna moth - amazing!
We enjoyed your program so much today Slim....We hope that you continue sharing your view on nature. The armadillos are so funny, but that butterfly on the tree with eyes, just beautiful. When we appreciate sharing our nature with all the creatures, it is such a wonderful experience. Thank you for sharing...Glad to see your A-frame wasn't damaged from the storm. Yikes! Quite the storm.....Take care Slim. Keep on A-framing. Carolyn & Colin Hogarth
Thanks for sharing your video..from Sydney
Australia 🙏🏽
I never expected to see Slim a few miles from where I grew up. Great video.
I was running full open about then through Texas and Louisiana and Alabama about then. It was still beautiful
Nveverjoke about the Armageddon - TOO FUNNY!!!!! Another great video
He's also looking for his breakfast ! I live in northeastern LA . Happy to see someone enjoying our state !!! Thanks !
Happy you made to my home state. Not all swamps and gators. Nice to see your in the South and giving the a look see. I now live on the Emerald Coast I hope you can make over here to. It is get a little warm now so I am sure that Canadian Snow bird will be flying north soon. Thank you so much for keeping the show drama free.
I was caught in a historic hail storm back in Ohio. I was driving my VW bug......it sounded like I was in the world's largest snare drum!!! I remembered when you put your hands over your ears. One hail stone was so large it went through this guys roof, attic, ceiling and landed on the carpet in the living room!
One of the best camping videos I've seen, funny as hell to, Paradise to armagedon then back to paradise.😅
Enjoyed this video like all your others ! Beautiful nature shots in vivid colors and with nice comment !
After seeing so many of your travel videos of the north and west, it’s great to see you in our “neck of the woods”. Louisiana is a beautiful and diverse state in nature and culture! Central La is a good mix...it’s like two different states...North and South La. love your videos...still trying to talk my wife of almost 50 years into an Aliner! Safe travels!
Mr. Slim...I always enjoy your nature shots...even though you had this little scare. Being a southeastern girl I'm very appreciative of you visiting this area of the country. Thanks and safe travels! :-)
Beautiful slim can't wait to take off and explore our great country
When it gets loud like the hail
I just take my hearing aides out
Just beautiful! I love this video. I have a favorite campsite that I love to go to each year. It rains, thunders, hails, snows, and is one of the most beautiful peaceful places I’ve ever been. Gotta take the good and the bad.
Love the wild flowers
Seriously ... you are the most gifted videographer and storyteller on RUclips. Amazing!
What a gorgeous part of the world. Somewhere else to add to my bucket list.
Your videos are the only ones I ALWAYS watch full screen. Excellent videography, Slim!
Loved this video! I grew up in those woods, it was great to see them.
Would love to experience the storms you have in the USA.Nothing anywhere near here in NE England
so the moisture adds to the beauty! great video
Wow! Beautiful shots. Thank you so much. You are awesome!
A Slim Potatohead video and my morning coffee. I'm good!
I am in Louisiana right now but I wanted to tell you I think you take the most amazing videos it's so true to life that I could almost Reach Out And Touch those leaves and touch the flowers
What a great video! So much drama and beauty.
Right about the time your hailstorm started, I heard thunder rolling, then realized it was outside to the West of me, a rare occurrence here, haha! Great flora and fauna video as always!
Cheers 😊
Hahaha! The calm before the storm...then the hail! Try being in a school bus! Exciting huh?!...
Thanks. Still cold here in the northeast so seeing nature was a really appreciated treat. Love your video and know just how much time you put into them. Great work.
Wow, colors are beautiful! Love the area... maybe worth a few dimples. When I was young, I got caught in a hail storm, in a brand new small truck we bought. I thought the windshield would break... the hail was golf ball to baseball size. It was very scary. Thank you for sharing, always a joy to watch.
SO FUNNY!!! Armageddon!!! Great video, glad you were ok
Thank you for showing the beauty of my Louisian
"SPORTSMAN PARADISE" Home of the Bald Cypress, cousin to the Great California Sequoia Tree !!!
I love the forest, such a beautiful place, another fine video and a big thumbs up from me
Thank you I really enjoyed this. I am new to this technology, I have a land line phone and am not going to change. I am long in the years and with only so much time left I pray I can do some of this. Never realized how great camping was and I know I could do it!! Thanks again!!
So beautiful, definitely an underappreciated part of the USA and the state of Louisiana! Cheers from a New Orleanian!
Great video Slim. Great to see such amazing design in the moth's camoflauge
Quite the adventure there, fellow Canadian! In any event, your ability to capture pittoresque pics is truly astounding.
Thanks for visiting my state! Your video fires me up to get out there! I can't believe we could hear the slugs chewing. We were tent camping just north of you around that time. We each picked a tree to hug in case of tornadoes. Crazy times!
We were just in Louisiana a few days ago. In Hot Springs Arkansas now working our way to Fort Smith. I LOVED Louisiana. As a college educated Entomologist, I LOVE seeing all the insect varieties in this part of the US. :) Thanks for another great adventure Slim. :) Michael
Slim, this is just beautiful. Gracious, mi amigo (that's Spanish for, Thanks, my friend). Eeeeheheheheheeee I like the picture of the black bear at midnight at the 6:15ff mark. Cooul. If you're in an RV, do like we were trained to do back in the 1950s when fear of USSR nuclear bomb: 3 steps, 1. stand up 2. spread legs 3. bend over and kiss yo a$$ goodbye.
You bring back childhood memories of watching Mutual of Omahas Wild Kingdom with my Father. Love your videos, keep up the good work and stay safe:)
Another amazing video. Thank you.
Your all videos is very good nature I really appreciate you
Welcome to spring in the South...from incredibly beautiful to terrifying with breathtaking speed! Most thankful for your videos and even more for your safety! Thank you for sharing with us. Journey mercies.
As usual, a very beautiful video. I love the trees, the flowers, the birds. Just lovely!
Welcome to Spring the east! Love the sound of a thunderstorm. I RV in the tropics year round, so the weather is just something you deal with. Yep, it gets loud. That's when you put your noise cancelling earphones on and listen to something else. Part of the territory. You couldn't pay me to RV out west in the desert and dryness. The American southeast is "home."
Really cool, thanks Slim
Beautiful videography.
