  • How St Mary Cray on the edge of London and Kent has changed, 1985 to 2023
Includes The Red Lion pub, The Blue Anchor pub, W S Home Improvements, Orpington Weightlifting Club, Fish and Chip Shop, Temple Congregational Church, Antique shop, The Candle Shop, The Wool Shop, Lime Tree Stores and the High Street St Mary Cray.
In the 1980s I was very concerned about the number of old buildings disappearing so I photographed parts of London, Kent and Orpington to create a record. I mainly focused on listed and locally listed buildings as well as anything else that looked like it was about to be demolished or was interesting.
So I photographed parts of St Mary Cray in 1985 and have come back in 2023 to see what has happened. I have also made a Video on other parts of St Mary Cray link at the end from pictures from 1982
I will cover location, some history, context, and have a good look at the 1985 photos. There is often quite a lot of detail in the background that is easily missed
Please stay to the end to for all the detail
I hope you enjoy, please like and subscribe.
Thank you for watching Eclectic Experience, change seen through images.

Thanks for this, I was born in '88 and lived on Hearns Road till I left home at 18. Those old pics brought back some old memories, especially the old Blue Anchor and Red Lion pubs.

Very well done on this great and well illustrated video. What a shame that so many of the old buildings from the area have now gone, I lived in the area up until 2003 and even before then wonderful edifices such as The Rookery were already gone, the Rookery fire was always treated as suspicious even at the time and then suddenly we had a huge block of flats appear!
Thanks for this, well enjoyed and brought back some great memories.

@@eclecticexperience1 I’m local, but relatively new to the area, really interested in the history. Do have anything on Marion Crescent?

Excellent video, thank you for posting. I was brought up in the Crays during the 1950's/60's. We didn't have much but as a kid I thoroughly enjoyed it all. I can still recall the sense of camaraderie and the troubles shared with neighbours. Went back on a visit recently and couldn't believe my eyes - a traffic nightmare and swarthy foreign types everywhere. What on earth happened to our world?

That bingo hall used to be called "The Iron Curtain". In the late 60s early 70s. It was a live music venue and bar.

Yes indeed. It was the first "nightclub" my elder sister ever attended (I was too young!).

Coming from a background in Architecture, this is a really interesting record and comparison. Wonder if you have any old shots of areas in Essex or East Anglia? Thanks for the efforts and will check out some of your back catalogue having just found the channel.
