seeing a splatoon story explore a self vs self storyline would be really cool one of these days. cause i feel if we’re exploring a competitive game we don’t need a villain or antagonist, because the people who are going to be antagonistic to you aren’t going to improve to be better than you (since they drive others away and just be banned from tournaments anyway)
They could of used the pokemon approach to antagonists: what makes champions the antagonists is that they are the final challenge between the trainer and the rank of champion, they will wipe the floor with your team without a single after thought, then they're gonna give pointers and wish the trainer luck for next time. It would make a lot of sense in a splatoon story to have the antagonists be a strong team, have them beat up the main guys, give them tips and root for them until they get a rematch. However that self vs self would be a really cool idea and I think it should be explored more. Too bad when a media is targeted at younger audiences you rarely get to see these as a well written, in depth self vs self can be really rough on the reader
Captain 3 made up a special on the fly, so maybe that's what X-Blood is doing with X-Fall and X-Zone? In which case, they're literally cheating as I'm pretty sure only officially regulated specials are allowed in battles.
X-Fall and X-Zone seem to be more like special, personal techniques that X-Blood made (sorta like goggles squid lightning jet) rather then Special Weapons. (That’s what it looks like to me at least)

The worst thing about the "X-fall" is that you'd be likely to hit your teammates. While there's no friendly fire in the game for gameplay reasons, theres nothing on the subject in the lore. For similar reasons, soldiers and cops dont position directly across from friendly units when setting lines of fire in ambushes etc.

One of his quirks was that he was obsessed with Vintage and it spread throughout his community. Unfortunately, after about a year or so, information came out that he...had done some questionable things. He tried to defend himself but the cancel culture was too strong and he ended up leaving the internet. The whole ordeal kind of left a bad taste in everyone's mouth.
I just love ,how vintage is so invested in the game ,while all of his teammates pick of meta weapons and proceed to downright throw the game and goof off.
I think when I read the Manga for the first time, I understood the x fall and x zone as vintage just having temeportation abilities. I thought the x team was meant to not have any strategy, just the hugest amount of pure mechanical skill.

As someone who has just joined a competetive team I'm tempted to suggest X-Blood as a name now for no other reason than to give us motivation. If we get good enough Gem may at some point have to say our name out loud and just know.
11:05 I mean if you really think about it, X Fall technically works in Manta if done at street instead of Mid. Blob can sit on mast spamming blobs in an uncontestable position while BP/Tetra could set up on bunker (assumes they sharked during the push and the enemy team doesn't paint bunker in a desperate attempt to capitalize off a stagger) to shoot at awkward angles and capitalize on blob's reflection mechanic to further slow the enemy down. The remaining 2 people would sit on sides poking/killing any stragglers after rm dies.

After reading the wiki it turns out that the "X-Zone" that Vintage seemingly did and was pretty unclear is actually a unique ability that he and Omega have that allows them to just sense where other opponents are moving and I just have to express my disappointment with the whole manga
These videos have been an absolute treat to watch. I try not to be too hard on the manga in public because I get that it's made for 10 year olds but there's a sense of comfort knowing that it's extremely underwhelming for comp players and lore fans alike.
Noticing the manga I am wondering if from the 12 principles of animation have anything to do with how the story is written 2 of the principles in question are called timing and staging Meaning that when building a scene, you can not have overlapping important actions happening at the same time
Watching Gem break down the Splatoon manga makes me feel frustrated on two fronts because on one hand I want to defend storytelling over realism/reasonable comps because imagine if this came out with Splat 3 and you had an artist/writer trying to stick to all but the most recent Splat3/Crab meta meta. You'd have to draw/write so many Splash/Ballpoint/Machine scenes and get virtually no variety in weapons or tactics to make it interesting for the viewers. On the other hand, as a writer, HOW. How did they get this so wrong? I would AT THE VERY LEAST make sure I knew how the basic fundamentals of the game played and made sure to pick at least 1-2 frontlines, 1-2 supports, and 1 anchor weapon for each team. Even if they didn't synergize well, that would at least be better than what was done here. And before people say "oh, it's just a manga for kids, it's not super serious and obviously it's not going to be accurate to the series" there are definitely manga based off of games and marketed to kids in Japan that are just straight-up way better handled than this, taken way more seriously than this, capture the feeling of the original game way more than this does, and just are better handled overall. This just makes me so frustrated because of what we could've had. You know how you write a good villain team in a Splatoon manga? Make them GOOD. Make them the best of the best. Make them coordinated and a genuine threat, who utilize all their tools effectively. But then make them awful people. Squidbaggers. Cocky jerks. The kind of people who use their skill in the game to lord over other people and make themselves feel better. Have them be a team you think can't be beat, and then show them fighting the "good guys" and being unable to take a loss. Have their members throw tantrums each time they get splatted. Getting more mad and tunnel visioning in over the course of the game. Have that be the reason they lose to Team Blue. That would be so much better than just making them edgy and not understanding "the power of friendship and working together" and having "I should be X-rank" be their sleeper agent activation phrase.
From a storytelling standpoint, I agree the bad guys need to be an actual threat, however I don't think splatoon needs villains outside of the campaings. They could totally write the antagonists as just really good players, even have them root for the main characters, but making them a much stronger team the good guys want to beat. It's like with pokemon and Cynthia, she is not a villain, she actively roots for you during the story, but when that piano starts playing as you challenge her, you know you're in for a rough fight.
For me, this could be fixed by just ONE little thing, because I do actually believe having a proper recurring villain could work in the manga. There was just one thing they needed to do: ACTUALLY COMMIT TO IT. what I mean by this: after it’s over, vintage is just ‘there’. Just still there, like the author expects it to automatically feel like he’s ‘just another one o da bois’ now, when that should absolutely not be the case, given how immovable and immovably tunnel-visioned he was already established to be. That. Doesn’t. Work. That was how it felt right for it to be, with Rider, with the S4, and with Emperor, given what their stories were actually about. You can’t just expect that to happen with anyone characterised like Vintage ‘just because’. Popping up in the hero arc doesn’t do crap, because there was no reason for him to be there, it shoulda been just Skull, or even Emperor. Yet because it DID happen, we’re supposed to just be like ‘all’s good now’ People immediately frown at any character that’s just a 2 dimensional cardboard cutout villain, but I believe, in a kids comic at least, that can work, IF you actually make them properly villainous. The s+’ers and so on can talk trash, but obviously they’re still basically the team’s mates at the end of the day, and the problem is the story just treats Vintage and Xblood like they’re supposed to just be more of the same. After team blue just befriending so many opponents, xblood, imo, should’ve lost and become the first proper-actual antagonistic force recurring in the manga, that everyone in the story can hate, and gets stronger but comes to fall every time, and eventually have some climactic showdown with an ‘avengers endgame portal moment’ where even Skull decides to side with Goggles over his once-friend and… getting a bit too far over my head there. But yah, if I was making some ‘The One Writing Change That COULDVE Saved X Blood’ essay, that would be the gist of it. I believe it would’ve been fine having an overturned jerk bad guy in this manga, IF they hadn’t just made a complete cop-out of it. (Btw, if anyones saying ‘well isn’t there also a third route of doing it like Emperor, just give him some actual time to make him a better character later on, my response is… I mean sure, that works, obviously, but that’s missing the point, that’s still just going along with the status quo and doing the same thing again and it was just more interesting to……..(rambles and rants about the situation for a further 40 minutes)) Edit: I’ve just learned (tho not yet confirmed for myself) that apparently they imply a lot more about him in the source material, so I understand if any Vintage fans read this and… may be a little upset with me 😅… I’ll look further into it soon-ish.

Also keep in mind that Cynthia is an entirely separate situation. In the Pokemon games, you as the player has to take down Cynthia to beat the game, so regardless of how nice she is, you’re inherently invested in beating her. In a tournament arc in a manga/story, it’s important to give your readers a reason to root for the main characters beyond just the fact that they’re the main character.

@@popsicIes in all honesty… I never got that impression off of Mask, he warned them to be careful about team Purple, and you could tell his approval still grew as the salmon shift went on, and overall seemed to just be eager to watch them in tournament the same as all the other characters did. Maybe ‘stays committed to the bit more than the others do’ does still suit… but still just that, just a ‘bit’. As for what I meant down there, I’m talking about apparent big differences in the dialogue between the viz version, the one I read, and the original in Japanese and it’s mangadex translation, which give a bit more reason to his character that I felt was lacking. Difficult to confirm, seeing as most of his fight got skipped by the mangadex translators, but that’s what I heard, you can read the replies to my comment here to understand

In response to your question about what's supposed to make "X-Fall" and "X-Zone" special when they're just simple maneuvers, they're special specifically because of the names. When I see stuff like this, I think of pro wrestling. A lot of the wrestlers have their own signature moves that help them stand out from each other. When you look at the moves closely, a lot of them very basic moves, like kicks, grapples, slams, or drops, a lot of commonly used fighting moves that many wrestlers would be able to perform. But part of what makes those moves special is the names they give them, and the execution of said moves. A lot of times, the moves are differentiated between each wrestler by whatever different gestures, open projections, even simply calling out the move name before performing it. And that's part of what we're seeing here. X-Fall isn't special because it's a unique tactic or maneuver, it's special because it's X-Blood themselves that are performing the maneuver. It's basically a performance gimmick, a way of showing off to make something simple seem more special. It's actually something you see in a lot of professional sports.
tetra and naut as a pair works really well in my experience, having a weapon that can skirmish at a moment’s notice covers up one of naut’s biggest weakness imo, the fact that its vulnerable while firing. i do agree that paint does become an issue for them as a pair, but the other two spots on the team can be dedicated to helping with that, just that x-blood did this while also making their existing weaknesses even worse
X-blood: they are supposedly the best players to exist besides emperor of course... But they haven't discovered the power of friendship and enjoying yourself ...and even when they do they still lose for plot convinece
I think I figured out why the characters in the manga play this way. It’s that they are emulating how your average little Timmy would play, as the average little Timmy is the target audience for the manga. So while the manga gives terrible representation to the competitive side, it perfectly represents the young player mentality. That’s what I think anyway. 9:00 Top player pika has made a video on why leaving the rainmaker behind like this is almost always a missplay. I won't get into the details of it as he explains in his guide video much better than I could ever in this comment. But the gist of it is popping the rainmaker after defending it. Just leaving it in your spawn is a terrible idea most of the time because it takes 15 seconds for the rainmaker to reset. In that time the respawning team would've already reached mid and be ready to fight in neutral again which will most likely be a coin toss as for who wins because neither team will likely have the specials to force neutral until the rm is back. In which the defenders could just end up back in the same position as where they were. If they grabbed the rm, they could've gotten into mid ready to make a break for it while the enemy team is still getting out of spawn. Getting more points on the board more guaranteed than if they were to have waited 15 seconds in mid. The respawn timer is shorter than the reset timer for the rainmaker. So because of that, it's almost always a bad idea to leave the rainmaker unpopped in your side of the map. Not just because it wastes time and makes you have to spend resources on an additional fight. You risk letting someone slip through creating a C9 situation where you're off fighting in mid while the other team is winning the game. The rainmaker is more important than a special. It essentially is a special That lasts for 60 seconds. There is a reason it replaces your kit and special Icon and doesn't charge your special. It's because the rainmaker is a special. And it's powerful. It's shots while slow firing are very very threatening and cover and deny a sizable area for a good length of time and it can be spammed. You have to respect the rainmaker as a weapon. Sure if you're fast enough you can get the drop on it and take it out. Cause it's slowness is very exploitable. But it doesn't mean that the weapon itself is weak. If the team plays around the raimmaker properly it is devastating in how much it controls the battlefield. Just like any other special. And just letting it sit in your spawn and waiting 15 seconds in mid just to play neutral again isn't worth it in comparison to picking up the special weapon that lasts for 60 seconds which is also the objective Getting back into mid and beyond before the enemies have gotten back into the game and suddenly you're the one pushing them into their spawn. You can't give the your opponents room to breathe as splatoon 3 is the fastest the series has been and not utilising that speed is a massive wasted opportunity.
Talking about all the stuff. Team comps X-blood's feel like more something you would get from random matchmaking compared to how manga portray battles closer to a pb. A lot of strategies also seem more like something you would see in random matches compared to coordinated play. Also I guess you can maybe make the argument that the "specials" X-blood used was more of a stylistic portrayal of winning a team fight and I guess a single player wiping out the whole team.

Captain 3 made up a special on the fly, so maybe that's what X-Blood is doing with X-Fall and X-Zone? In which case, they're literally cheating as I'm pretty sure only officially regulated specials are allowed in battles.
X-Fall and X-Zone seem to be more like special, personal techniques that X-Blood made (sorta like goggles squid lightning jet) rather then Special Weapons. (That’s what it looks like to me at least)

The worst thing about the "X-fall" is that you'd be likely to hit your teammates. While there's no friendly fire in the game for gameplay reasons, theres nothing on the subject in the lore. For similar reasons, soldiers and cops dont position directly across from friendly units when setting lines of fire in ambushes etc.
Heck, that was a gag in that Aladdin sequel. "Nobody move, or we'll be shooting ourselves!"

One of his quirks was that he was obsessed with Vintage and it spread throughout his community. Unfortunately, after about a year or so, information came out that he...had done some questionable things. He tried to defend himself but the cancel culture was too strong and he ended up leaving the internet. The whole ordeal kind of left a bad taste in everyone's mouth.

I think when I read the Manga for the first time, I understood the x fall and x zone as vintage just having temeportation abilities. I thought the x team was meant to not have any strategy, just the hugest amount of pure mechanical skill.

As someone who has just joined a competetive team I'm tempted to suggest X-Blood as a name now for no other reason than to give us motivation. If we get good enough Gem may at some point have to say our name out loud and just know.

Blob can sit on mast spamming blobs in an uncontestable position while BP/Tetra could set up on bunker (assumes they sharked during the push and the enemy team doesn't paint bunker in a desperate attempt to capitalize off a stagger) to shoot at awkward angles and capitalize on blob's reflection mechanic to further slow the enemy down. The remaining 2 people would sit on sides poking/killing any stragglers after rm dies.

After reading the wiki it turns out that the "X-Zone" that Vintage seemingly did and was pretty unclear is actually a unique ability that he and Omega have that allows them to just sense where other opponents are moving and I just have to express my disappointment with the whole manga

These videos have been an absolute treat to watch.
I try not to be too hard on the manga in public because I get that it's made for 10 year olds but there's a sense of comfort knowing that it's extremely underwhelming for comp players and lore fans alike.
Noticing the manga I am wondering if from the 12 principles of animation have anything to do with how the story is written
2 of the principles in question are called timing and staging
Meaning that when building a scene, you can not have overlapping important actions happening at the same time
Watching Gem break down the Splatoon manga makes me feel frustrated on two fronts because on one hand I want to defend storytelling over realism/reasonable comps because imagine if this came out with Splat 3 and you had an artist/writer trying to stick to all but the most recent Splat3/Crab meta meta. You'd have to draw/write so many Splash/Ballpoint/Machine scenes and get virtually no variety in weapons or tactics to make it interesting for the viewers. On the other hand, as a writer, HOW. How did they get this so wrong? I would AT THE VERY LEAST make sure I knew how the basic fundamentals of the game played and made sure to pick at least 1-2 frontlines, 1-2 supports, and 1 anchor weapon for each team. Even if they didn't synergize well, that would at least be better than what was done here.
And before people say "oh, it's just a manga for kids, it's not super serious and obviously it's not going to be accurate to the series" there are definitely manga based off of games and marketed to kids in Japan that are just straight-up way better handled than this, taken way more seriously than this, capture the feeling of the original game way more than this does, and just are better handled overall. This just makes me so frustrated because of what we could've had.
You know how you write a good villain team in a Splatoon manga? Make them GOOD. Make them the best of the best. Make them coordinated and a genuine threat, who utilize all their tools effectively. But then make them awful people. Squidbaggers. Cocky jerks. The kind of people who use their skill in the game to lord over other people and make themselves feel better. Have them be a team you think can't be beat, and then show them fighting the "good guys" and being unable to take a loss. Have their members throw tantrums each time they get splatted. Getting more mad and tunnel visioning in over the course of the game. Have that be the reason they lose to Team Blue. That would be so much better than just making them edgy and not understanding "the power of friendship and working together" and having "I should be X-rank" be their sleeper agent activation phrase.
From a storytelling standpoint, I agree the bad guys need to be an actual threat, however I don't think splatoon needs villains outside of the campaings. They could totally write the antagonists as just really good players, even have them root for the main characters, but making them a much stronger team the good guys want to beat. It's like with pokemon and Cynthia, she is not a villain, she actively roots for you during the story, but when that piano starts playing as you challenge her, you know you're in for a rough fight.
For me, this could be fixed by just ONE little thing, because I do actually believe having a proper recurring villain could work in the manga. There was just one thing they needed to do: ACTUALLY COMMIT TO IT.
what I mean by this: after it’s over, vintage is just ‘there’. Just still there, like the author expects it to automatically feel like he’s ‘just another one o da bois’ now, when that should absolutely not be the case, given how immovable and immovably tunnel-visioned he was already established to be. That. Doesn’t. Work.
That was how it felt right for it to be, with Rider, with the S4, and with Emperor, given what their stories were actually about. You can’t just expect that to happen with anyone characterised like Vintage ‘just because’. Popping up in the hero arc doesn’t do crap, because there was no reason for him to be there, it shoulda been just Skull, or even Emperor. Yet because it DID happen, we’re supposed to just be like ‘all’s good now’
People immediately frown at any character that’s just a 2 dimensional cardboard cutout villain, but I believe, in a kids comic at least, that can work, IF you actually make them properly villainous. The s+’ers and so on can talk trash, but obviously they’re still basically the team’s mates at the end of the day, and the problem is the story just treats Vintage and Xblood like they’re supposed to just be more of the same. After team blue just befriending so many opponents, xblood, imo, should’ve lost and become the first proper-actual antagonistic force recurring in the manga, that everyone in the story can hate, and gets stronger but comes to fall every time, and eventually have some climactic showdown with an ‘avengers endgame portal moment’ where even Skull decides to side with Goggles over his once-friend and… getting a bit too far over my head there.
But yah, if I was making some ‘The One Writing Change That COULDVE Saved X Blood’ essay, that would be the gist of it. I believe it would’ve been fine having an overturned jerk bad guy in this manga, IF they hadn’t just made a complete cop-out of it.
(Btw, if anyones saying ‘well isn’t there also a third route of doing it like Emperor, just give him some actual time to make him a better character later on, my response is… I mean sure, that works, obviously, but that’s missing the point, that’s still just going along with the status quo and doing the same thing again and it was just more interesting to……..(rambles and rants about the situation for a further 40 minutes))
Edit: I’ve just learned (tho not yet confirmed for myself) that apparently they imply a lot more about him in the source material, so I understand if any Vintage fans read this and… may be a little upset with me 😅… I’ll look further into it soon-ish.

Also keep in mind that Cynthia is an entirely separate situation. In the Pokemon games, you as the player has to take down Cynthia to beat the game, so regardless of how nice she is, you’re inherently invested in beating her. In a tournament arc in a manga/story, it’s important to give your readers a reason to root for the main characters beyond just the fact that they’re the main character.

@@popsicIes in all honesty… I never got that impression off of Mask, he warned them to be careful about team Purple, and you could tell his approval still grew as the salmon shift went on, and overall seemed to just be eager to watch them in tournament the same as all the other characters did. Maybe ‘stays committed to the bit more than the others do’ does still suit… but still just that, just a ‘bit’.
As for what I meant down there, I’m talking about apparent big differences in the dialogue between the viz version, the one I read, and the original in Japanese and it’s mangadex translation, which give a bit more reason to his character that I felt was lacking. Difficult to confirm, seeing as most of his fight got skipped by the mangadex translators, but that’s what I heard, you can read the replies to my comment here to understand

In response to your question about what's supposed to make "X-Fall" and "X-Zone" special when they're just simple maneuvers, they're special specifically because of the names. When I see stuff like this, I think of pro wrestling. A lot of the wrestlers have their own signature moves that help them stand out from each other. When you look at the moves closely, a lot of them very basic moves, like kicks, grapples, slams, or drops, a lot of commonly used fighting moves that many wrestlers would be able to perform. But part of what makes those moves special is the names they give them, and the execution of said moves. A lot of times, the moves are differentiated between each wrestler by whatever different gestures, open projections, even simply calling out the move name before performing it. And that's part of what we're seeing here. X-Fall isn't special because it's a unique tactic or maneuver, it's special because it's X-Blood themselves that are performing the maneuver. It's basically a performance gimmick, a way of showing off to make something simple seem more special. It's actually something you see in a lot of professional sports.
tetra and naut as a pair works really well in my experience, having a weapon that can skirmish at a moment’s notice covers up one of naut’s biggest weakness imo, the fact that its vulnerable while firing. i do agree that paint does become an issue for them as a pair, but the other two spots on the team can be dedicated to helping with that, just that x-blood did this while also making their existing weaknesses even worse

I think I figured out why the characters in the manga play this way. It’s that they are emulating how your average little Timmy would play, as the average little Timmy is the target audience for the manga. So while the manga gives terrible representation to the competitive side, it perfectly represents the young player mentality. That’s what I think anyway.

9:00 Top player pika has made a video on why leaving the rainmaker behind like this is almost always a missplay.
I won't get into the details of it as he explains in his guide video much better than I could ever in this comment.
But the gist of it is popping the rainmaker after defending it. Just leaving it in your spawn is a terrible idea most of the time because it takes 15 seconds for the rainmaker to reset.
In that time the respawning team would've already reached mid and be ready to fight in neutral again which will most likely be a coin toss as for who wins because neither team will likely have the specials to force neutral until the rm is back.
In which the defenders could just end up back in the same position as where they were.
If they grabbed the rm, they could've gotten into mid ready to make a break for it while the enemy team is still getting out of spawn.
Getting more points on the board more guaranteed than if they were to have waited 15 seconds in mid.
The respawn timer is shorter than the reset timer for the rainmaker.
So because of that, it's almost always a bad idea to leave the rainmaker unpopped in your side of the map.
Not just because it wastes time and makes you have to spend resources on an additional fight.
You risk letting someone slip through creating a C9 situation where you're off fighting in mid while the other team is winning the game.
The rainmaker is more important than a special.
It essentially is a special
That lasts for 60 seconds.
There is a reason it replaces your kit and special Icon and doesn't charge your special.
It's because the rainmaker is a special.
And it's powerful.
It's shots while slow firing are very very threatening and cover and deny a sizable area for a good length of time and it can be spammed.
You have to respect the rainmaker as a weapon.
Sure if you're fast enough you can get the drop on it and take it out.
Cause it's slowness is very exploitable.
But it doesn't mean that the weapon itself is weak.
If the team plays around the raimmaker properly it is devastating in how much it controls the battlefield.
Just like any other special.
And just letting it sit in your spawn and waiting 15 seconds in mid just to play neutral again isn't worth it in comparison to picking up the special weapon that lasts for 60 seconds which is also the objective
Getting back into mid and beyond before the enemies have gotten back into the game and suddenly you're the one pushing them into their spawn.
You can't give the your opponents room to breathe as splatoon 3 is the fastest the series has been and not utilising that speed is a massive wasted opportunity.

Talking about all the stuff. Team comps X-blood's feel like more something you would get from random matchmaking compared to how manga portray battles closer to a pb. A lot of strategies also seem more like something you would see in random matches compared to coordinated play. Also I guess you can maybe make the argument that the "specials" X-blood used was more of a stylistic portrayal of winning a team fight and I guess a single player wiping out the whole team.
