    It’s not the best in terms of sound only in comparison to other M engines, but i’d say the performance compensates for that. The platform is still one of the best tuner/track toys for the money, and i’d say it’s the best looking in its price range too.

    I’m ever searching for perfect exhaust note. Have heard it on single turbo N54s. Gonna try to find it on my B58-it’s a 3.5” downpipe tapering to the stock 3.25” piping that gets turbulence switching from round to oval pipe. Either want to go 3.5” round piping all to end with bottle resonators no muffler, or 3”

    The reason for the "farting" is the DME doing a "micro-split-second" cut of the sparkplugs firing to enable the micro-split-second gear change without damaging the transmission! BMW was doing this back in the mid 90s as well,....for instance, my '97 M4 Sedan (Auto) did this,...but not so pronounced like contemporary turbo cars!
    Edit: I should note that naturally aspirated cars didn't make the 'fart',...LOL!

    I had an e46 m3 for 4 years and hated the sound.
    Ive had my F83 non-comp for almost a month and i love it.
    Bare with me..
    In efficient mode, after the cold start, it's nearly silent. Easy to live with, comfortable to drive, not offensive to others.
    In Sport/Sport+ mode and the valves open it sounds like a proper sports car and, being a non-comp, has none of the obnoxious pops and bangs.
    It's not as loud as my e46 was, even in sport and doesn’t sound like a hornets nest is living in my midpipes.
    Also, gonna be controversial here. The 2JZ isn't a special sounding engine whatsoever. Using that as a template isn't really very indicative of a good sounding inline 6.
    Tbf, most turbos sound a bit meh. A good inline 6 NA is something like an older Jag or TVR with nearer 4L than 3L

    Do E46 M3 has the equal length header or downpipes? Inline 6 engines have two headers, and every 3 cylinders share a header, so it should have different length naturally. I agree the equal length midpipe has great sound, but I think if you have two equal length pipes that creates V6 sound not I6. I am still a little confused.

    S55 sounds worse is because it has 2 turbos interfering with the exhaust instead of one on the N55

  • @andrewthompson6893
    @andrewthompson6893 2 месяца назад

    I respect you as a presenter, and the research you've done, but it's Toretto Brian, it always has been. It's the second turbo, end of story. Evidence of this can be found it the thousands of equal-length DP's with every configuration of exhaust you can imagine that are unsuccessful at fixing the sound. Unsuccessful. Period. The only way to combat the sound is to remove a turbo, and it's a non-negotiable position. BMW themselves can't fix the issue because it literally can't be fixed with 2 turbo's attached to the car. Mitigating it to a 30-45% more pleasing tone with the ELM's is a great idea IMO, but it can never make it sound as good as a base N55 to most ears. It's unfortunate, it's why I chose the OG M2 over the Comp, but the chassis is just fine with 450/490, so all is well.

      There's a lot that can be attributed to the difference in sound. But even a stock supra with its twin turbo setup doesn't have the cleanest I6 exhaust sound. Most people switch over to a large diameter titanium, single exit exhaust that essentially has no bends in it to get the clean, smooth tone.

  • @alexb5166
    @alexb5166 3 года назад

    Cool vid man! Just for anyone's benefit in the comments - an EL S55 does not sound exactly like an N55. The "raspy" and "sharp" qualities of the S55 are still present, just the exhaust tone has changed and is much more balanced and pleasing. It sounds like an inline 6 should now, but still maintains the S55 character. I've owned both, and I actually like the EL S55 better due to these character traits - has more exotic qualities.

    Commenting prior to watching the full video, but s55 doesn’t sound bad if you go catless down pipe and the main thing that completely changes the tone is a catless 3.5” mid pipe. The mid pipe takes away the rasp and gives it a much better deep tone.

    Great video! I always wondered why the M2 sounded so much better than the M3 even tho the M3 is the top dog.

  • @billymania11

    Yep, the S55 sounds like crap. It's the fault of the twin turbo design. It's basically two 3 cylinders motors at the exhaust end. There's not much you can do about it unless you go big turbo. I drive a 2018 M2 it's no contest in the sound department.

    I'm in the market for a F8x, getting frustrated that couldn't find any cars in my price point because how they sky rocketed in the past months. I really want to make track build after I got the car, do you think it's a good idea to find a car that has 30k or more mileage? (which is in my price point) Is the chassis good enough for track purpose with higher miles?

    Excellent explanation, very interesting stuff, I had not heard this explanation before. I suppose the new S58 might suffer from the same issue as it has also the twin-turbo set-up? I didn't hear many M4 S58 videos yet, I guess early next year when the deliveries are starting.

      @@carboydorifutoparty3976 Good suggestion. X3M sounds smoother, way less raspy as the S55. But lacking character, it seems that the OPF filters have sucked the living daylights out of it.... aaaaargh...

    Ats v and ct4 v sound way better than any s55. I’m a bmw purist but the s55 no matter how you slice it sounds not so pleasant. Boxer engine sounds amazing with unequal length systems . The s55 when single turboed sounds amazing though. Even with equal length pipes it sounds a bit better but that tin and rasp sound still exist esp on DCT models.

    Hey I know you had an M235i in the past, I recently got an M240i and I was wondering if you knew any affordable exhaust options that sound better or a way to make it louder . I would really appreciate it. I’m in high school and don’t want to drop a ton of money on it, but if you have anything that could help me that would be great!

    I actually think the single mid pipe sounds better then the equal length, I really like how my exhaust sounds with the single I’m hoping I don’t ruin it with the arm resonated down pipes

  • @rubbermoetroken

    It sounds good in standard trim, and sound better with an EL setup (have an EL on my S55 M2comp). I have massive resonators in the EL setup and still sometimes it's trumpetlike raspy. It is just the nature of the engine setup / OEM tune I am afraid. Mounting an EL setup (and removing your OPF's) immediately bumps your top-end power bij 10-12ish hp, which was a surprise......

    Im struggling to decide I have the option to get a f82 but I wont be able to do a crankhub fix, and I drive pretty damm hard, I would probably do a gts tune just for the burbles. Or I have the option to get a m2 with the n55 which I would be able to do pretty much anything too. Any opinions?
