Hey Anahita! On this channel, I specifically appreciate your way of presenting a topic and your way of speaking. So much so that I have a little friend-crush on you 🙈 Please keep presenting fresh but obvious yet neglected topics about women in India and in general, like you do! Lots of love! ❤️
I like almost all the songs I've watched Helen dance to, but the two songs through which Helen & her dance first caught my attention are Mehbooba-Mehbooba & Piya tu ab to aaja. I also love to watch her in Aa Jaane Jaan.
Agreed. I have always been fascinated with the so called vamps and their item songs from my childhood. (Not the trend when heroines started the item songs) this women may have been portrayed as "bad" women, however they seemed to have more fun then the heroine who was crying and needed someone to save her constantly. The vamp knew what she wanted, spoke her mind and didn't care what anyone thought of her and took what she believed was her due from the world. Recently there was a Telugu movie that came out called pokiri with Mahesh babu. In that movie there is an item song with Mumaith khan which I absolutely loved because her character has shown more gumption and agency in a three minute song than the whimpering heroine of the movie showed in the 3 hours. I would have loved to see the vamps journey and her story then the heroines. There is one line in that same item song where the hero tells the girl she doesn't have such a scene that she deserves to be treated the way she deems. Everytime I hear the song I go "nope mister, it's you that doesnt deserve her awesomeness, not other way round, go back to your simpering fool of the heroine and leave the vamp to be her amazing self" :)
@@AndhraAdapaduchu-i2j No one could've said it better 💯💯 I don't know y there's this obsession to portray the main lead heroine as very 'pious' , 'flawless' ... @@ananyawable5728 also I don't understand y all the indian male lead actors are treated as gods? A vamp is basically a femme Fatale character trope. In any cinema the femme Fatale portrays all the qualities society want women to not have. Like she's beautiful but she knows it & uses it so she's bad. She puts herself first but women are supposed to be all sacrificing victims. She is clever but women are supposed to naive (abala). It's all just subtle brainwashing that shapes your thoughts & moral beliefs. Also if you notice femme Fatales always gets a negetive ending it's also subtle way of showing ambition in women will get them nowhere. They will only be punshied. It's kind of a witch hunt but showed in such a way you will not suspect. It's reflection of our actual society.
I think it is more a character representation technique used in art. Popular cinema shows what the audience would like to see and more so relate to. For instance In the pre 60's era common women were just housewives because pre woman's liberation movement most women were just just that in the 70's-90's they were people who started working but went through struggles- Again thats what common women were going to at that time 2000's they started coming up as career women and at times more successful than men. Thats what was happening in society. Popular cinema is made to appeal to the masses and what they relate to. Hence the portrayal.
Yes also if thier was nepali version of swaddle i would requested the same thing cuz even in nepali cinemas they do what is that ki the actress is potrayed little strong and then at last a hero comes to save her and she turns into weak person😑 srsly

Can you make a video on how, in almost all TV soaps nowadays, married women always wear a sari while there's no sign of married men wearing a dhoti? To say nothing of the fact that they all revolve around a marriage: begin, continue with bat-crap and fizzle out a deary end. And also if you can highlight that the fact that all of them still function on the concept of "taming the shrew" that is, women are shown in a bad light if they are outspoken, wear western outfits or even speak up but are cornered, bullied, slut-shamed to convert to a docile wife and eventually mother.

But the main thing is when the heroines took over the role of vamp in the 90s, mostly all these song and dance routine happened in the dream sequence of the Hero. This essentially brings out the fact that even in reality never can the heroine actually wear such clothes or act in such a manner. At the end, the heroine is "Holier-than-thou" according to the male gaze and hence she dances provocatively only in the Hero's imagination. And if she is not, well she doesn't get the guy. I think if one sees Veronica in ‘Cocktail’, you realise that the story is still focused on that Western Girl being Bad or Dangerous. I mean, a lot of them eat unhealthy food in hoodies and sweatpants. Where is that representation?
Even in the so called modernisation era of 90s, heroines would wear western clothes till she is ghamandi' and as soon as she is in love, she'd start wearing Indian clothes unless it's a dream sequence.
The Male Gaze on Helen ji was always that of the Exotic Forbidden Fruit but she owned herself so it never looked like she’s ok with a male-centric narrative. Kudos to her!
Zeenat Aman and Parveen Babi were ahead of their times because they owned themselves and were unapologetic about it although that could be misconstrued as ‘Vamp’ or ‘Sanskaar Ke Khilaf’.
In the 60's a lot of Indians were still emerging from the post independence mindset. British things had a negative connotation to them. A lot of villains and vamps were either white people or people who were westernised. Actors like Bob Christo, Tam Alter, and the likes were representers of the British Raj and so were given the roles of villains. Even the Indians who wore suits were shown as villains. It was just a western vs indian value system representation in the cinema.
@Worldwide Handsome I think it is possible that Myntra who may have coaxed the NGO to file the complaint. Both of them got free publicity after the news leaked. It was a win-win for both. :-)
I found it interesting that India did have a brief episode of yellow facing, with Helens breakout performance in chin chin chu. To this day people with oriental features are presented always as "other". It wouldn't be an issue, except there is zero representation of indians with those specific types of features. Its unfortunate.
