The most ironic part is that most "live action" movies are just _animation anyway._ Like, where you see Iron Man flying around in his suit that's _visual effects._ Its basically just "realistic" animation that always ends up looking worse, and will age poorly in the years to come.

Without watching the video, I can already tell you we didn’t need a remake. It’s AVATAR, a show considered by most people to be perfect. So unless the remake follows the show scene-by-scene (in which reception would probably be meh), the audience won’t like it. The only valid reason I can think of it existing is to spite the horrible excuse of a movie we got.

I also think that part of why animation is looked down upon, is because most people don't respect it and don't respect visual arts in general. They maybe don't understand how much work goes into it, how much work one needs to do to be as skilled as to create something so incredible. We can see it in how artists and their work is treated in recent phenomena such as NFT or AI where creator's artwork gets stolen and used without a second of remorse. Comparing it to music and how much friction there would be if someone copied or used a musician's track without their consent, artists who are distraught about their creations being stolen are seen as whiny and annoying by most people.

If you wanna shoot a scene in a park IRL, you just find a park, get a license to do it and shoot the scene. If you want a park in animation not only does a visual artist place every tree, the audio/sound department has to create every piece of audio ambiance to make it sound like you are not just hearing dialogue in a sound void. The amount of work it takes to make animation, let alone amazing good animation like Avatar the Last Airbender is so under rated.

A video contains 24 frames every second, meaning 24 different images played rapidly in a single second to mimic fluid motion. For animation, that's 24 completed drawings for every second of video, fully colored and all with enough consistency to trick the brain into thinking it's a cohesive sequence and not just a bunch of random drawings.

Yes, Animation is not respected as much as it should be, and I hate that, because I love animation of all types. Although when you said "Comparing it to music and how much friction there would be if someone copied or used a musician's track without their consent, artists who are distraught about their creations being stolen are seen as whiny and annoying by most people". I just wanted to point out that artists are constantly having their music stolen, not just illegal downloads, but parts of songs are taken and reused by other artist, in a proses referred as sampling, which has a complex history, or just rip offs like Vanilla Ice's song "Ice Ice baby" which took its sound from another song. The point I am trying to make is that no art or entertainment is safe from thief or plagiarism, and the people who steal these I.P.s always play down the importance of the medium they are stealing. I personally think this is a problem that rises form unchecked, unregulated capitalism and the need for artist and entertainers to have to copyright everything they do so that they can pay for food and housing, but that is a longer comment.

i wish my brother would ever come to his senses like this, but he is stupid in this regard. Some people will never change, will never truly give it a chance, will never accept you may be suggesting something actually good, and in the best of cases they will watch something animation related but not at all anything of what you suggested to just either say "see, i'm open to it (but not really)", even if they do watch something with you (and i had this happen to me) they'll be spacing off on purpose and expect you to see it as almost a favour that htey are watching it with you (i had my brother straight up say "this is bad and for children" after spacing off and watching spirited away, and i know he isn't the exception), or to spite you since they keep ignoring any suggestions of yours while you always take interest in theirs, or to choose something mediocre as hell to watch and then to say "yeah no animation is bad/for children" and confirm their own bias.
in a paralel dimention it would be great if my brother (or anyone in my family) could appreciate avatar or any animated content really, but it will never happen despite my best and patient efforts. All of this to say, there are a lot of people out there who will never give animation a chance no matter what, and while the live action adaptation is bad and won't likely truly impress anyone as the series of the year or anything, those poeple who avoid animation like the plague might at least watch it. (it isn't a good thing in my eyes, but i see why an investor would cash in on this)

That would have been amazing. Live action will always have limitations that animated series don’t especially with underaged primary actors who inherrently have more limitations then adults. The good thing about animation as well is that you can just use good voice actors and ignore physical limitation. Like very few real elders can do action scenes at the same intensity as a 20-something. But that’s not an issue in animation, you can have an older character who isn’t either a young person in old age makeup or swapped out for a stunt double actually do incredible things due to whatever circumstamces are set up on the story.
Also, you can draw a character anyway you want and just find the right voice. No need to be limited by how much an actor does or doesn’t resemble the character concept.

I actually think it’s also part of a general stigma against general audiences media in general. Like the idea of shows and movies that aren’t MA or R Rated being legit pieces of art is not respected. Like we are obsessed with the athletic of maturity and we want constantly edgy and r rated. Remember when everyone was begging for an R rated Dune movie when the remake was being made. Despite both the source material and the 1984 movie being PG13 people were begging for it to be R rated. And people ended up being disappointed when Dune got a PG13 rating because it was trying to be faithful to the material which remember was PG13 to begin with. I think the real problem is that we have a contempt of anything PG or general audiences. When we should not be evaluating a films quality based on rating because it restricts creators in a box. If David Lynch the director of Eraserhead and other more adult films is able to make a G rated film about a man driving on a tractor to visit his brother with cancer release under the Disney company and lynch refer to it as one of his great films(it’s not a kids movie by far because it will bore kids most likely) it shows how much we are obsessed with the athletic of maturity rather than actually understanding that you do not need to have your film be R rated to be acceptable as a great movie. Now I am not being a prude but it’s just part of a larger problem.

I started watching One Piece shortly before the live action came out, watched both almost in tandem and continued onward with the anime. In currently at episode 223 and there's no way in hell they could successfully adapt anything after episode 45.
There's a talking furry reindeer doctor with 4 different transformations, a river that goes upstream, a man living on a island on a biosphere inside a giant whale, two giants fighting on a tiny island, a criminal organization full of people with wacky superpowers, a man that can eat anything and transform into what he eats, a civil war caused by a man that can turn anything into sand, an archaeologist that can grow limbs wherever she wants, Nami gets a rod with climate powers, Luffy befriends some seal-turtles, they fking went to an island in the sky by riding a giant geyser, sailed through a sea of clouds, fought a guy that was literally made of lighting, rode on a giant falling vine in the sky with a motorcycle, sailed through a sea of clouds then came down to the regular sea by using an octopus as a hot air balloon.
Tell me how the hell any of that would be possible in live action without looking like garbage? I mean sure the first arc was grounded enough with some fantastical elements, but after that it goes full on wacky cartoon logic

Exactly! And the rest of the series just continues to make things even wackier and more unhinged and more impossible to translate to CGI without it looking absolutely trash no matter how hard they try. It would probably dampen a lot of the variety of the character designs too. Where the anime allows characters to be all shapes and sizes, live action would just turn them into either regular people or CGI creatures.

I feel like episodic storytelling has become less common popular overtime in tv which is a shame cus i think that globetrotting feel atla had comes from that element.
Also i agree asoiaf would work really well in animation. So many of the descriptions of places and characters are very imaginative and larger than life because Grrm wanted to be unbound in the story he was telling. Animation can capture that better than live action.

@@christopherbennett5858 I actually think it’s also part of a general stigma against general audiences media in general. I agree completely. My question has always been, why do we consider live action to be an upgrade? Realism is not the end of art.. if it was, what reason would there be to draw or edit when photography and video exists? They are all necessary, and serve different purposes.
There are many, many things which live action cannot do that animation is just naturally suited for. Look at Arcane's masterful use of facial rigs for Jinx which transition her face between 'Powder' and 'Jinx.' for a more modern example.
Also, since it is pretty rare to see the opposite direction, here are two well known massive story worlds which have adapted animated projects to live action projects very well! (And also, expanded on them, not just replicating the originals beat by beat)
-The animated series created for Star Wars; The Clone Wars Series expands beautifully on the Prequels, uses animation as a way to bring its alien characters and environments to life, and grows into using masterful color and choreography. This also goes for Bad Batch and Tales, by the same/similar teams. And don't forget the 2D Clone Wars animated project!
-many dc's animated series served as the first entries for many superheroes and vilalins. Some of DC and Marvel's best stories came from these shows, even after their live action forays took over. DC's Justice League/Justice League Unlimited and Teen Titans for example, have a genuine connection between their heroes, and characterize them in multifacted and heartfelt ways through simple moments and stories which are not too complex for their own good. Most of DC's works in this area are based solely on the comics and predate live action projects, but many were created after or alongside repsective live action projects, and there a tons of stories which only exist in comic pages and animation to this day. Marvel also has several projects like this too.

Animation is in a lot of ways a better medium than live action especially for high quality fantasy settings. This is compound by the fact that better visuals require more time or more animators to achieve making a lot of the best looking shows/films have some of the greatest stories while the same can't be said for live action.
Having said all that, I believe even bad adaptations can create more interest in a series, especially in areas where television/streaming rights limited the series to a smaller audience. Here viewers of the live action after watching or hearing about a film / tv show may seek out the source material.

Does it need a live action remake? No. Especially considering they're removing so many of the original elements. "Toning down" Sokka's sexism, removing "filler" from the show like the King of Omashu or the elephant koi, apparently there's not really gonna be a romance between between Yue and Sokka, no Koi-zilla etc. and you know exactly why they're doing this is likely because each "book" will be 6 or 7 episodes long, so they'll need to hurry things along.
Something I will NEVER be able to understand is, if they WANT more avatar content, why not MAKE more avatar content? Instead of telling the story we already know but literally abridging it by removing crucial elements. Why not animate the comics? Most of us who were going to, have already read the comics, but I would love to see them animated. Why not make NEW stories?
Same thing with the HTTYD franchise, WHY set up Hiccup and Astrids kids and then never do anything with them? Instead of the absolute shit that was The Nine Realms, they could have told a whole new story involving the kids of the original characters.

I will say, I feel like remaking a piece of media in a different medium does enable the creator to explore different aspects of a work (perhaps more realistic costume and makeup, or character dynamics that might be otherwise overshadowed by bombastic action, technical aspects to make the bombastic action make more sense in a live action context), and thus there is value to that. However, most of these adaptations aren't made out of some sort of artistic exploration and advancement, but rather as cash grabs.
You do make interesting points though, about how we're always live-actioning animation but never animating live action.... That does definitely demonstrate a social preference for one over the other, further demonstrating that these decisions aren't really being made out of some idea of 'artistic exploration'
I do wonder if maybe that preference is out of a desire to see it in a more 'realistic' sense, because this isn't _exclusive_ to western animation. While Japan does seem to have greater respect for animation as an art form, the most popular animes still get the live action treatment, it usually just doesn't bleed over to the west (because if you are a western anime fan, you probably are that _because_ you prefer animation as a medium). Perhaps the reason people prefer live action is because, especially for a property like avatar, people want to be able to see themselves in it. Animation is separated from them, its 2d and therefore its harder to to envision it as 'real'. But live action is very realistic (even if the cg is pretty bad) and therefore it enables a viewer to imagine that it is real.

I just hope they add in new scenes that expand on the original material and not anything out of character or feeling when it comes to ATLA. I had the same concerns about them making a medicre version of a terrific show and possibly leading new viewers to think the hype for the original was unjustified. I was glad to see it won't just be a shot for shot remake, but then I too am not a fan of them removing character growth elements from the narrative, like Sokka's sexism. At least they are adding something new to the mix, which will justify me watching it rather than me simply rewatching the original. I doubt that the live action show will lead to more viewers of the original though.

I personally think the reason people make live action or remake of anything is so they can capitalize on the success of the original without having to put much effort or risk into it. Creating a story that gathers an audience is hard, and it can easily flop (other elements like the medium or casting or anything is important but tolerable if they’re not the best- meanwhile, no one will stick around for a boring story), so they want to tell the same story in as many mediums as they can to squeeze the last bit of money that story can get them

Live action versions of shows can be cool when done well. They are a great way to recapture some of that excitement of watching/reading a story you loved again. it can bring new fans to an older franchise. Then the skill and effort it takes to do things in the real world hold value in of itself. Such as one piece, it was so cool seeing a "real" Going merry. I cant think of many other live action versions of shows that really worked, but that's because Hollywood just uses it as a cheap building fan-base for a quick buck. live action is not the issue its the bloody suits.

The only great live-action remake adaptation Disney has made was Cinderella, and that says A LOT. And the thing how many of us don't ask "what if this was remade into animation?" resonated so much with me! Like, there's another Harry Potter 'reboot' on the works and I thought 'what if it was animated instead?' There are so many great artists out there that can bring to life that live actions can't do, and they are all hindered by the fact that the masses think that animation is for kids (which it's not)!

I kind of wish that the video also talked more about the positive side of modern animation like how animation has been pushing the medium, through Blue Eyed Samurai, Spiderverse, Puss in Boots, Arcane, etc. 2025 is even bringing us a new Avatar movie that will be animated, which will directly address people asking for new stories in the Avatar universe. We don't *need* a live action Avatar, but the same could be said for a live action Last of Us or One Piece either, etc. It all comes down to whether the writers behind the work can do something justice.

I'm not opposed to the concept of a live action remake existing... What I am opposed to is the proposed premise behind most live action remakes. Setting aside the corporate side of why these remakes keep happening, often, there is this weird sense of pretension as people say the live action remake is meant to appeal to a "more mature audience" and act as if it is going to be somehow superior just by virtue of it having real people on the screen. I won't knock the concept of some people simply connecting better with living human faces on the screen due to whatever personal reasons... but that's not the kind of person I'm talking about with this. We all know that jerk who likes to sing the praises of "realism" while sneering and snickering at the "childish" and "immature" fools who refuse to "grow up" and leave animation behind. They're quick to talk about changes in the remake as if they are always huge improvements to the source material. (Every time I heard someone talk about how the live action remake Cinderella had "so much more agency and free will" than the old animated version, I kinda wanted to scream.)
Characters might be changed in various ways to keep them in congruence with modern sensibilities, and certain changes to the story are presented as if they are meant to be "improvements" on the source material... Improvements can happen... Sometimes a character that wasn't well written, or properly fleshed out in the original, can have a bit more substance in the remake. Sometimes a story element that wasn't expressed clearly enough in the original can be made more effective. However, if the change is counter to what was the *point* of the source content, then what did it really make better?
Like... I'm sorry (not really), but, when I heard about Sokka's sexism being toned down, I was IMMEDIATELY very apprehensive. I'm still hoping they actually just mean they're taking out a moment or two that might feel superfluous or unnecessary in this shorter series in order to streamline the lessons on healthy masculinity that he STILL LEARNS... I'm not holding my breath, but it's a nice thought... The same goes for how they said they want Aang to start taking things seriously much sooner than he does in the original, removing the "silly" side quests that comprise a bulk of those first episodes before the storm. I'm *hoping* it's just that, because this won't run for as many episodes as the original, they just want to streamline the process a bit more, but they actually *won't* fully remove the important point that the reason WHY Aang is such a goof at the beginning is partly because he's just a *KID* who's trying to have fun and distract himself with fun adventures in order to avoid thinking about the big scary destiny that he *NEVER WANTED* in the first place... Even then, "streamlined" isn't the same as "better"... I see it the same way I see movie adaptations of books. I can understand the changes made due to the change in medium. Provided the source material is respected in the process, I can see the vision for many of the creative changes brought on by new perspectives on the materials. I can even acknowledge a remake or adaptation as brilliant in its own right for various reasons... It very likely won't be "better" than the original... Just a different experience. Like... This could be our DBZ Kai. 🤣 Streamline the story and perhaps improve the voice work and dialogue in places where it may be needed.

I think the new term you’re trying to come up with is
    “Are you vaping cactus juice?!”
Though personally the biggest issue I have with a lot of the “woke,” changes that allot of people hate is that often times these creators take the story, deconstruct it, then add in these progressive ideas. While at the same time failing to understand why the story told as it was worked so well.
Be it this new live action Avatar, getting rid of Sokka’s sexism, and Katara fighting agents the northern water tribes sexist beliefs.
The Disney live action little mermaid changing the “kiss the girl,” scene because of reasons I don’t think they even get.
Or just having these live action remakes getting rid of love between the lead female character and the princess because somehow love is lame now. And god forbid the men actually want to help and contribute.
Or you know they just hate the original for whatever god same reason and yet there put in charge of the remake.
Also, how the hell is it that animation is so expensive yet CGI animation is so cheap now?

  • @LanceBerylDev

Great video bringing up a lot of points i havent seen amongst broader audiences anticipating the live action adaption, and love the fun juxtaposition of animation being effectively recognized with the advent of Snow White, to today's insistence on live-actionifying anything animated to make it more palatable for pretentious audiences.
I've been very skeptical of the Netflix adaption since effectively its announcement. Though i could possibly entertain exploring an expanded universe in live action, say the life of Avatar Roku or Avatar Kioshi, --gosh that sounds so awesome, ..adapting the original series feels unnecessary, if not artistically bankrupt. What about the story in the original series warrents improve when the original was nearly perfect?
There are i suppose a number of side characters or character dynamics that could see new exploration (jet being one supposed example,) and has potential to be mildly interesting, but when Netflix reveals they've stripped Sokka; one of the most important characters, literally a team member, of his story arc, is that and whatever else they're cooking up really worth everything we stand to loose, or stand to see again but now in live action?
And that's just my contentions with retelling the original story, not even getting into the shortcomings of liveaction vs animation. Animation **inherently** is the more expressive and versitile of the mediums, both for character expression, and choreography of the bending as well.
-I'm sure the live-action actors are doing their best but they do not sound or look in character with the direction they were given. -I get they wanted to go a bit "darker" for this take on avatar, (..probably cuz execs wanted the adaption to appear more "mature" to distinguish itself from the original.) But that also feels like it ..misses the entire appeal of the original? -The warmth the characters exuded inspite how dire the situation could go?
In respect to choreography, the Shyamalan film famously had atrociously sluggish fight scenes due to practical limitations, and the Netflix adaption ..frankly looks just as bad, but with a higher budget in vfx.
The more i dwell on it, the more i can't reason that adapting the original series had any justifiable merit outside of well, ..money.
For an adaption or remake to truly justify it's existence, it needs to do a lot, either to improve upon the original work, or greatly distinguish itself from the original work in a compelling way, ..and i from what little weve been shown I dont see the Netflix adaption as effectively accomplishing either.

@@talkingweevil3172That is not what I said; I said the point of an adaption is to EITHER 1) improve upon the original work, or 2) distinguish itself from the original work.
The issue i have with what we've seen of the adaption thus far is that the change in medium or casting of different actors won't be enough; it needs to do a lot to distinguish itself as it's own thing, ..yet it was arguably the medium of animation and warm charactization that gave the original show its heart, at least in my eyes.
I think the Netflix adaption conceptually was just an uphill battle from the start. Maybe they'll pull through, but I and others have every reason to be skeptical following the last adaption we got. If it comes to it I'll eat my words, but I again think a new story set in the same universe would've negated all lot of the uncanny comparisons between it and the original show.

Winx Club was a vibrant show, and the creators had a lot of ammunition to work with. Instead, they decided to try to make it into a dark, gritty, CW show. I like animation more because of how much room there is to play around with character expressions and the world around them. When I get my show ideas off the ground, I would love to have them drawn in some of my favorite animation style. Something like the ones from Max Steel, Spectacular Spider-Man, or Generator Rex.

And animation is always so pretty and colorful, while when watching live actions thinks are so often just gray (Ariel, Peter Pan - thank you Disnay, you destroyed the whole aesthetic and compleatly mised the point)
Even tho i know some animations have the standard of appealing to adults (Arcane and Castelvenia proved if but anime like AOT, Vinladn Saga or shows like Sheera and princesses of power are also at such a high standard). I love netflix Carmen Sandiego (even tho the storie suffered from beaing rushed, and im a fan of Dragon Prince. Winx seasons 1-4 will always be my fav, and W.I.T.C.H is a masterpiece.
But yeah for evry masterpiece animation there will always be a miraculous ladybug or my little pony make your mark to cover up what animation could be. (I did watch both of them, but only once xD)
As for avatar live remake im hyped. Not because i want a live adaptation specifically, but because i wached the show like 10 (or more) times alrady, and getting that chance to watch it again from a slightly different angle is absolutely great. Something funny. Ever since I was a child I prefered animation over live-action, like people would say that cartoon is for children and I would just say to them that live action looks ugly. I wasn't just talking about cgi trying to look realistic I was saying that real life people looked uglier than cartoon and that therefore it was inferior.
Of course now I'm an adult I'm past that mentality, yet if you gave me the choice of watching a movie in live-action or animation, exactly the same thing, copy pasted, just one animated and the other live-action. I'd choose the animated one in a heartbeat, no questions asked.
