One cool visual thing in Poison that gets lost in all the other visual impact of what Angel is going through is that he has this red eyeshadow on whenever he's pretending to be okay. It's gone whenever he's being honest in the song. You can actually see it disappear in the final dance scene when Val approaches and Angel gets scared, then the video cuts to Angel performing with the red. It's a really unique play on a "theater mask" given how Angel is always putting on a facade, as well as him being an actor/performer.
12:29 a bit of a correction, but that's meant to be a Fiddle. It's a Devil Went Down to Georgia reference, one of my favorite Easter eggs in this show.

It's downright *criminal* that Welcome to Heaven WASN'T _Emily_ doing an almost exact mirror of Charlie's Happy Day in Hell.
I'm not crazy right? Emily is basically as enthusiastic about Heaven and its citizens as Charlie is in Hell and its own, and her part of the song is easily the best part. If anything, her couple lines kill me because I'm only getting a tiny glimpse of the song it _could_ have been.
The only reason Happy Day in Hell works is because it's through the perspective of someone who doesn't understand sin.Its positive mixed with an opposite background. The only way it would work isifEmily started dropping curse words like a sailor which would ruin her image and parallel with charlie.

It's my top song too, not just narratively, but the musical dynamics that the song has.
The song starts of with a positive sounding key with a somber tone of regret with Emily's and Charlies lyrics. Then Lute comes in with a bombastic change to a minor key for "Hell is forever" reprise. Then it bounces back to the prior key when Emily is in shock about the extermination. Then when sera comes down and sings "Do what was required" in a sharper up pitch, it makes her sound sinister. Then Emily finishes the change in "To think that I admired you" And again to a higher octave when she sings "Was talk of virtue just pretention...." all the while she is also flying above Sera with the rising key changes. Then the key changes again to a much more challenging tone as Emily flies down next to Charlie.
They roll with that key as they sing their version of Hell's reprise, and this higher octave key is a complete slap in the face to Lute and Adam's. To top it off, it's a kind of irony that Charlie, a demon, takes the higher melody, and Emily, and angel, takes the supporting Alto role.
All the other songs in this show just aren't as dynamic as "You didn't Know", it is so underrated.
Poison is my favorite. It lives rent free in my brain, this primal scream of rage that puts me directly into fight mode.
But my favorite musical moment is "I'm grateful you're my father/daughter" in More Than Anything. It makes me cry every time.
Am I the only one who actually loves the Mimzy part? And I'm someone who didn't know who she was before that episode. Hell's Greatest Dad is my favorite song btw
You Didn't Know is, I feel, a Peak Musical Song. It's such a great musical number that does such an amazing job tying in the reprises and furthering the plot and character development... urgghhhh it's so GOOD.

I don't love Mimzy's part of Hell's Greatest Dad (at least on repeat listens, in the show it serves the purpose of ending the song without either side winning), but I don't understand you needing to wiki dive to know who she is. The episode tells you she is an old friend of Alastor's which was all you need to understand her role in the show. At the very least I haven't felt any need to do research on her despite being a new fan.

Yeah I understood from the get go that she was meant to be that trope of a person who thinks they're famous and everyone's like who tf is that. The problem I have with that song is that Alastor out of nowhere trying to act like Charlie's dad was creepy as fuck and yet this was never addressed lol
@@justahugenerd1278Alastor trying to be Charlie’s dad has actually nothing to do with Charlie, he’s trying to intimidate Lucifer. Lucifer is more powerful than Alastor and Alastor HATES that. He hates not being the center of attention and not being the most powerful in the room, but he can’t take Lucifer out with his power so he is attacking him through his relationship, making Lucifer feel like Alastor’s replaced him as a father figure.
Does it work? No, but that was still his goal. Had nothing to do with Charlie, everything to do with Lucifer
the only part of the Mimzy part of the song that makes me laugh is Lucifer saying "who?" at the end
@@calicomarkerWell I figured that out after the fact but the fact that Charlie just goes along with it feels a little too infantilizing of her character. She's not stupid, and I feel like if she had a moment of being like "wait what" that would've added a lot more to her character, and Alastor's too. Throughout the show they can't seem to decide just how evil he really is and if they're gonna make him that complicated I wish the main characters would see some of that too! Because like, that's very obviously Alastor not being genuine and I can't imagine that Charlie would be that dumb to not notice it. But maybe that's just me, idk.
I totally agree with your comments on You Didn't Know about the plot progression in songs in a musical. I feel like not only have we, the audience, forgotten that that's how musicals work but also lots of 'musicals' - aka Disney and all Disney-like movies. Disney used to be huge on muscials but nowadays, if there's songs with lyrics in a movie at all, it's not usually the characters singing them and instead it will just be a marketable popsong that roughly fits the movie's themes.
Meanwhile Hazbin Hotel goes back to the roots of musical. Every song in the show tells part of the story. The show's plot would be lacking massive pieces if we just left out the songs and that is exactly what it's supposed to be like! If your song doesn't tell the story for you, then it's not a musical, simple as that. And not just that: If all the plot that was covered brief, to the point, yet with so much emotion within 3 minutes of song were to be just dialogue, it would drag on and on and lose all its impact. I wouldn't want to listen to the same characters just dialoguing for 15+ minutes over the topics that they just fed me within 3 minutes of a cool song number.
I think it's good people see Hazbin Hotel now and get a taste of what musicals have to offer when they have kind of disappeared from mainstream media in the past decade.

I’d listen to “More than Anything” more often if I didn’t cry like a little baby every time it came on. Lucifer and Charlie’s dynamic reminds me of the dynamic between my dad and I on multiple levels and I’m always a sucker for dads singing to (or with) their kids because my dad and I used to sing together all the time when I was a kid. I just like seeing extremely flawed parents recognizing that they’re extremely flawed and actively trying to do better.

"You Didn't Know" is actually what got me into Hazbin Hotel. I've never cared about spoilers so I just randomly watched a reaction to the then most recently released episode at the time, episode 6, and when the reactor got to "You Didn't Know," I was immediately enamored. And then I listened to that song on repeat for a while before finally deciding to actually watch the show. It's such a good song! And I don't understand the complaints about there being "too much plot" in that song--that's what a song in a musical is *supposed* to do. It's supposed to advance the plot! I like that Hazbin's songs advance the plot. I'm sure it's partially because there's so little time to cover what needs to be covered but yeah, songs are a great avenue for getting through plot points quickly.
i cannot explain how validating this video was. this is the sixth hazbin song ranking video i've watched and this one is far and away the closest to my personal rankings. no one else has taste like us
A nitpick I got Vaggie and Carmilla in the show is like, I never really felt what the show was going for in saying that they have their similarities, cause like Idk, protecting your daughters is not equivalent to protecting a girl you've known for three years of your presumably immortal life.
Like I like them but I never understood why they specifically were contrasted together.

Showing up to the party late. I like what you have to say on Ready For This. I had such a hard time putting my finder on what is wrong with. The verses. Thank you for saying it.
As a musical number it is really important to the story. Showing Charlie’s character grown but how far she still has to go. And the singer does a great job of portraying her anxiety and hope.
I also really like the alow build up of the military marching drums and big royal brass for the final chorus. The instrumentation is not often talked about in the shows songs so i will mention it.

Okay, I see a lot of people complain about needing to do research to know who Mimzy is, but you really don't. It's made pretty clear, she's Alastor's friend from when he was alive and she used to perform. They make it very clear who she is in-episode, you don't need to do any research. In fact, doing research is actually pointless, since she was originally Alastor's girlfriend and they changed that to just his friend when she was actually put in the show, so it's outdated information.
You don't need research to learn who Rosie is, you don't need it to learn who Mimzy is. All the information you needed about her is stated in the show.
‘You didn’t know’ was my favorite song from the show. I love the fact that you can hear everyone’s reactions and emotions in the song.

Genuinely I don't think any of the songs in this show are bad, like, Welcome to Heaven is also my least favorite and I still think it's at least a C tier song, there is no F tiers here...well yet, here's to hoping future seasons keep up the music quality of season one
The entire soundtrack felt like a love letter to musicals and musical theatre! Different tracks reminded me of previously existing properties including (but not limited to) Wicked, The Greatest Showman, Steven Universe The Movie, etc and none of it felt like it was ripping off of those properties. More so, acknowledging them as inspirations for the music presented in this series! They seriously did such an amazing job! The show itself may have issues between the pacing, the tonal whiplash, and the over reliance on shock humor, but the music has been giving 110% since the pilot!
Honestly, Ready for This is a personnel favorite of mine mainly due to the fun verse while still getting pump up to beat up angels....by eating them. Wonder what they taste like. Steak? Duck? fish eggs?
Whatever it takes is my least favorite and the only one I think it's bad. And the reason is simple: Camilla. Vaggie's part is actually really good and is even petty in hindsight when you learn about how she met Charlie, but Camilla's doesn't tell or explain anything that couldn'tbe said in one line of dialouge and a shocked expresswion of an eggboi. Not help with them barely giving enough time for the A plot to develop and making it feel rushed at the end, which is the only episode I feel has that problem. Now if Whatever it takes was a Vaggie Solo song and had flashbacks of her and Charlie's deloping realtionship, then it would be as good as More than Anything.
also, I think Mimzy is a good character and is the only one who humanize Alastor. More Mimzy in season 2

I'm the nice nuanced person who was mad at you in your other video for not being a big fan of Stayed Gone. Because I'm like that. Also, I like your videos and this was a cool ranking.
So I go back and forth with “Loser, Baby” and “You didn’t know” as favorites meaning they’re basically tied for #1 for me. As for “Ready for this” the parts you complained about are actually my favorite parts in it, I also cannot help but dance to both “Ready for this” and “Out for Love”.
I agree with Mimsey being annoying but still tend to listen to the regular version of “Hell’s greatest Dad” with her in it and I still kinda get what they were going for putting her in it since this kind of dueling duet usually ends with a “winner” but story wise neither can actually win so she has to interrupt it instead.
Finally, I don’t usually listen to the “More than anything reprise” without listening to the main one first so it’s usually both put together for me and they both make me cry 😢

Got to agree with the placement of the More Than Anything Reprise, as much as I love the sentiment, the song will forever be in my heart as a familial love song, so the shift to romantic was a little unsettling. (Also sidenote- the second I heard the chords for More Than Anything, I had to pause and collect myself so I didn't get angry at a fictional character for singing, I remember verbally telling Vaggie off..) No clue why I have such a passion for More Than Anything in particular, but again it felt a little uncomfortable how the premise of the song was changed. Still a super sweet moment and kiss tho!!

okay so here's my ranking, which i need to get out of my system and since none of my friends have watched the show yet i'm just gonna leave it here:
*1. stayed gone* (i will not accept any slander, and also this song is so much fun to play on bass and i'm not even a bassist)
*2. poison* (initially i could almost not listen to this song because of how heavy the story around it is, but with time this song has really climbed the ranks)
*3. hell's greatest dad* (this would be #1 if not for mimzy, love me some electro swing and the vpices of alastor and lucifer are just perfect)
*4. loser, baby* (what more is there to say about this song that hasn't already been said 1000 times, it's a banger)
*5. out for love* (essentially what you said, it's just a pop bop)
*6. hell is forever* (it's horrible, i love it lmao, this super cliché dad rock song is the perfect genre choice for adam)
*7. respectless* (this one really is carried by the voices of carmilla and velvette, it's just otherwise not that remarkable compared to some other songs imo, i still like it tho)
*8. you didn't know* (i agree that this is the best musical scene in the show, but divorced from that context the song itself doesn't do that much for me, lute's part and the part where emily and charlie harmonize are amazing tho)
*9. finale* (similarly to 'you didn't know', this being a story-driven ensemble number necessarily makes the structure a bit messy and busy, but i like how it reprises 'happy day in hell' and the chord on "fulfill your destiny" hits so hard)
*10. whatever it takes* (i really like the later parts of this song, but the beginning is not really for me)
*11. more than anything - reprise* (for me the long version is a bit much with the cheesy broadway pop ballad vibe, so i actually prefer this more understated short version (also this one gets the sapphic bonus))

This is gonna get me killed, but I'm already dead inside so who cares. I don't think neither Vaggie or Carmilla earned to sing "Whatever It Takes". On Vaggie's side, we don't really see why she feels the way she does about her purpose until much later. The song shows us that she cares so much about Charlie that, in her words, she will act as her armor, but Vaggie's disregard for herself comes out of nowhere and doesn't feel natural, at least for me. And on Carmilla's side, we just got introduced to her. I don't know enough about her or her kids, who I can't even remember if they have names, to even care that she will do anything to protect them, damned be the consequences. I understand that any parent would do the same, but it kinda feels like they're telling me to care about her, without giving me a reason.
The fact that some people who have done covers of Hell's Greatest Dad have removed Mimzy's part all together will never not be funny to me. Guess Mimzy will have to interrupt someone else's duet!

I'd personally put Poison and Hell is Forever above Respectless because Adam and Angel are much more important characters this season than Carmilla and Velvet. Respectless is a banger but it does not hit as hard when I don't care about this characters. You could say that this song serves as a characterization for Velvet the same way Hell is Forever does for Adam, but the difference is Adam is developed beyond that song while Velvet is not. PS :Zestial has the best design in the show and I don't care what anybody says!
I... honestly don't understand WHY Alastor and Lucifer have beef at all? Like, they just kinda on sight immediately start being NASTY to each other.
Cause Alastor wants Charlie to be dependent on him. Also, he's a petty jerk who wants to be the strongest and scariest demon in the room.
I get that Hell's Greatest dad needed to end as a draw and neither of them were going to stop on their own but I'd much rather the song ended with Charlie asking them to stop in a way that felt less intrusive to the song than have a whole new character become known primarily for ruining a really good song. I fail to understand what people find appealing about Mimzy outside of people who like that she's annoying.

Maybe hot take: out of love is a really good song and i love it BUT, when you see the lyrics, it...
