- In Sage's Shifter Race Deep Dive, he discussed the unique ways Shifter pairs with the Barbarian class. This video is a multiclass example of that unique pairing. Meet the Barbadin, a Wildhunt Shifter Barbarian multiclassed with the Oath of the Watchers Paladin and paired with the Great Weapon Master and Polearm Master feats. Let's get into it!

I love adding the athlete feat to the wild hunt shifter. "Want to attack me from range?, haha that'll be at disadvantage then". Athlete wildhunt also works great for ranged martials and ranged magic users.
Clever use case!
I love your set up. To the point. No bluster, just pure tech. Thank you for getting after it.
you could also multiclass rogue with the wildhunt barbarian and farm sneak attacks because you are always swinging at advantage. and you could still get bonus from the paladin dip, but at some point throw in some sneak attack damage on top of everything else.
I can see Ancients Paladin for this one, if you want this wild animal theme to pair with Shifter.
Already love the title and thumbnail, looking forward to seeing how this video goes.
I played a wolf totem barbarian with the wild hunt shifter since I thought it'd be neat story wise and the group I was playing with immediately accused me if power gaming because of how strong it was
it's not really your fault though (especially since no sane non-masochistic person will want weak option to begin with, unless he likes the flavor)
it's other's players fault for making choices they are not happy with
I was not disappointed, great video!
I feel like Orc could work for this as well, especially for the additional flavour with Oath of the Watchers and the lore of Eberron Orcs in particular, plus Orcs being able to be super tanky with their Relentless Endurance fits this sort of build, might play around with that kinda thing
Third level of barbarian, going bare totem would sure up our defenses when dealing with range to tax and spell casters. This would empower the rage second form that you were talking about without critically breaking for the level dip.
Try adding athlete, since prone makes you harder to hit for them but doesn't negatively effect saving throws and only costs 5ft to get back up. I like narcoleptic/sleepwalking or drunk fighting style barbadin. You'll surely get them/your DM to find it rather frustrating! Especially if someone casts haste on you. XDD
Oath of Conquest gets you armor of agathys, which barbarians get a lot of utility out of due to the damage resistance
I have a story brewing in my head. But.
Wild Magic Barbarian 4
Oath of the Watchers Paladin 16
Bugbear with a Maul.
The concept is a old mtg combo named "Trollhammer"
The card names are Troll Ascetic and Loxodon Warhammer.
This has won me many amatches. Lol and is near and dear to my old, black, crusty, jerkyified heart.
Lmao!
Its a rough outline.
Another option for those free levels after the core of the build comes online is to go Warlock. Short rest slots for more smites as well as some other spell options.
I went more defense with my barbadin since I'm playing a 3 player campaign and we needed a meat shield. Gotta say that though this race is intriguing, I had to go variant human for the optional stat allocations (rolled the best stats in session 0, which is why I decided to tank). 16 str, 20 con, 16 dex, 13 int, 10 wis, 18 cha at level 1 with the durable feat (our group loves rolling dice, and I convinced the DM to let this feat apply when we roll for our hit points on level up so it's a niche choice). The aura of protection has saved our asses many times, but I definitely see what you mean about the wisdom saves being an issue... before the aura it's so much of a liability that I wish I would have saved alot of early game headaches and rolled a shifter.
The reckless attack upside without a downside is also absolutely insane, so much so that if I find another campaign to play with someone else as the main tank, I'm definitely doing this.
Here is an idea to lean into the divine aspect of the paladin with this build:
Reflavor the wildhunt shifter into more of a 'biblically accurate aasimar' with their shifting ability becoming more like an aura of intimidation. "Your visage becomes unnerving and distracting to your foes, making them unable to capitalize on any tactical 'advantages' to attack you." (For things that might not feel threatened by something like that, you can flavor it as just celestial interference)
And, if you don't think you'd be hitting level 20 for that paladin aura extension, you could invest one more level into barbarian for path of the zealot. If you used your Shifting ability, then you'd have some more benefits for Rageing, and it's pretty badass to just throw yourself into some crazy self-sacrificing battle plan, knowing that a teammate could ressurect you for just the cost of a spell slot.
A temptation to 1 more level in barbarian for a subclass... path of the totem for bear for tons of resistances, path of the giant to become large and huge if enlarge cast on you plus you can apply rage dam to throwing weapons, or path of the juggernaut with the crusher feat to knock them up in the air and on their back with that 15ft forced movement.
Oath of Ancients sounds like a nice second, for the flavor, but I'd try to at least get 6 levels in barbarian. The subclass features are just good.
If you take the beast subclass, and then your barbadin can smite with claw attacks and to 3 to 4 attacks in a turn while getting some kind of movement buff at level 6
Wild Magic Path works even better with a paladin multiclass because you can get magical rages for chaos, and you can give yourself spell slots back at level 6
This multi-class approach could be useful in a “Kartakass” adventure.
Awesome combo, im going to subscribe right now. I was wondering how to make a really good Shifter Tank build, and this get good damage to.
Glad we could help, and glad you liked the build!
wait DMs allow it to work like that?? its such a cheap way to get around reckless attacks bad spot. making shifters pretty much the best for barbs
You basically guessed my build except I think vh is better because shifting takes a bonus action and raging too.
3 levels of barbarian and get totem barbarian. get a crap ton of resistances.
uh rage gives you rage damage on hit, so even if doesnt help you defensively still does offensively.
I’m aware. Save for niche situations it’s a waste to use your rage just for that bit of extra damage. You may need the defense boost later and concentrating on a spell is likely to just be better offensively.
@@DnD_Daily fair enough, thank you for the reply and the great video.
@@DnD_Daily If your concerned with being able to hit devotion paladin and their channel divinity would be a very decent choice. As for barbarian subclass choice I like the options of beast, zealot and AG especially if your adding 6/7 lvls of clockwork soul to it.
So heres the thing. I have a variant on this that is a bit.... odd.
Keep wildhunt shifter for race for obvious reasons.
For type of Barbarian, Im going with Ancestral Guardian for at least 6 levels. I wanted to rage a bit more but I also wanted to get more out of it defensively. Ancestral guardians allow me to spread the damage resistance effectively to those within my aura which is nuts, as well as reduce any damage they take by 2d6.
That said, Im only using 7 levels of Paladin, and specifically Im going with 7 levels Oath of Ancients Paladin. Aside from giving us a channel divinity to restrain a target, it makes that protective aura give those within it resistance to all spell damage. This basically makes us while raging a sorta better version of totem bear barbarian, except we can actually resist psychic damage. We also get smites though not as strong as a build with higher paladin levels would. However theres reason for this.
I dropped the great weapon master on my version of this build. I realize an essentially free +10 to damage cant be kverstated in its effectiveness but theres another way to get some decent damage that the build already provides. For my version of the build, I utilize a rapier. Im sure you can guess why.
Because the remaining 7 levels I put into Swashbuckler Rogue. Few reasons for this. First, with the damage reductions we already have, evasion added to that makes most damage from area of effect spells get shrugged off easily. Second, between defensive duelist, medium armor master, the armored and duelist fighting styles, and a decent shield, we have a stupid good AC, which alongside the evasion, the resistance to spell damage, the rage resistance and ancestral reductions, and our auras buff to saving throws, means we are going to be in the fight for a good long while. Add tough for HP bonus and our opponents are really going to have their hands full. But the best part is since reckless attack gives us advantage, we can essentially apply our sneak attack atop smites to our attacks, and our crits are going to hit like a truck. The end result is just stupid enough to work, and enough of a pain in the @$$ to stress out a lot of the competition. I have one other variant thats similar to thks but a quad class on a Vedalken for an essentially unkillable tank build (6 totem bear barbarian, 6 paladin, 7 rogue, 1 hexblade warloc) but I digress.
And as a side note, that variant could also make use of the sharpshooter feat with a bow or crossbow, thanks to the rogue levels. So long range means shifting weapons but not losing damage options.
@@dakotamcintire7419 Adding the athlete feat would be nice then. Since prone protects you from range and spell casting and getting back up only 5 ft, you can still provide your support with your aura's and reactions.
Although I like clockwork soul 6/7 lvls here too instead of rogue. I mean although shield master can get you your evasion equivalent but you'll miss that cunning action dash. On the other hand since clock can swap in AOA and fire shield and there is also bastion of law to further reduce incoming damage. Or if you don't rage but do shift (due to conflicting temp hp) you can abuse reckless in combination with haste or greater invisibilty.
plenty of fun options.
I’m a sucker for shifters
Maybe I'm missing something and it's probably too late to get an answer anyway but, what's the reason behind dropping down to Medium armor?
Barbarians cannot gain most of the benefits of Rage while wearing heavy armor
I still think Sage is the best.
I thought Defense fighting style only works with shields?
No, it is just a +1 to AC flat. You might be thinking of the protector or interceptor fighting style
Barbarians have to rage to get resistance to BPS damage.
Hmm, I wouldn't call this a Barbarian build, it's mostly Paladin.
