For the flavor, a Bioshock vibe would be great. A diving suit (heavy armor)+ tentacle and spellcasting (plasmids) would cooperate together nicely. No one needs to know you're a githzerai if you're covered in armor the whole time.
There are plenty of options for reinforcing the aquatic flavor in this build, with the gift of the depths invocation, the cap of water breathing infusion, mariners armor, or just taking more levels in fathomless.

Personally the way I see it is as a max int character the armor isn't a patrons gift. Rather, the armorer realizes that the patron while powerful is not knowledgeable on how to efficiently utilize power on a mortal level. With its permission we shape that power using our massive intellect and physical resources alongside the eldritch power, to create something truly formidable. To our patron, we are an experiment, with much potential.

Since you start off as an artificer with low wisdom, you could have awakened an ancient one while tinkering with infusions and taken a deal, and as part of the deal you slowly take on the attributes of a lovecraftian deep one high priest. You could even have your character's appearance start to change into a deep one as you play, starting with a thirst for flesh, your ears developing spines and webbing, you develop gills under your new fin ears for permanent water breathing(talk to a dm about this) your eyes becoming widened and gaunt, and you develop a hunger for the flesh of intelligent beings.

I remember reading a piece of D&D lore that someone once opened a permanent portal in the Astral Plane that led to the Elemental Plane of Water. It basically created an ever-growing sphere of water that eventually became a massive oceanic orb, hurtling through the Astral. Maybe this Githzerai Artificer was a pioneering explorer of this phenomenon. His heavy armor could be reminiscent of old diving suits, similar to a Big Daddy from Bioshock, and his patron could be some terrible being of the deep that he found lurking at the center of the ocean’s sphere.

One of the more amusing concepts I've seen is reflavoring the armorer armor ability itself. Because you can summon the armor and its abilities, it can become like a sentai (power ranger) or magical girl transformation. This opens up the possibility of the fathomless warlock artificer as a masked superhero or black knight, which makes can be fun story-wise going from a weak nobody to a tanky beefcake. It could connect to the lore of Gith forerunners and their escape from the Illithid slavery, which may be amusing as an ancient power suit you're tinkering with and modifying, and can make the suit itself your patron.

  • @galonEagle

Depending on the setting, the gith can be seen as legitimate aliens hailing from planets that are more water than land, the patron is, well, ...their patron, an individual whose magic and knowledge are nigh-unending. Still a mortal by definition, they can still bestow their knowledge and slivers of magic in the form of cores. These cores can be used as a focus itself, or slotted into an item or armor. However, every core is linked to a warlock, and all in circulation are known to the patron...
It's a rushed one, but yeah.

So, one thing I often do is play a hill dwarf because they can ignore strength requirements as a racial feature, and then play a heavy armor cleric allowing me to dump strength, and dexterity to drive up my other stats. I actually ended up making a artillerist with the heavily armored feat who did this, and I typically used fire bolt or shocking grasp rather than booming blade.

I like this build as a Goblin + Undead Warlock. Fear then disengage. Disadvantage on all attacks and can't move closer to us. Huge huge debuff.
Although Goblin only gets advantage on charmed, Form of Dread gives fear immunity which will more than make up for it.
Plus a lil Goblin Skeleton in a suit of armor sounds cute.

Although for a 1 shot I did an armorer artificer with multiclass in runeknight fighter. had the runes all glowing on the armor was a cool pic I came up with...anyways their enlarge thing without concentration is a neat effect to have you do. An interesting idea would be that the patron is an Alhoon (lich mindflayer who separated from their elder brain) who hates the idea of an elderbrain and/or are being chased by their formal hive. This Alhoon made their pact with the this Gith because they had similar goals (and the Gith could have accepted this controversial deal because the Alhoon isn’t really fighting against the Gith), and it would make sence with all of the powers gained because Alhoons are mindflayers (which have tentacles) and mindflayers make technology.
This could also work well for GOO or Undead warlock (or even a reflavored Feylock).

I'm actually playing something very similar to this with great success.
My build is currently Battle Smith 9 Fathomless 3. I took the talisman warlock feature, and am using repelling blast and rebuke of the talisman. I gave the talisman to our cleric and the returning weapon infusion to our rogue while keeping the enhanced defense infusion for myself. Additionally, having my steel defender effectively gives an extra reaction to help keep party members safe. It's been great in helping protect the whole party during this campaign.
There is a lot of debate in how to use my bonus action though, between steel defender attacks and the tentacle attack. The other downside for this compared to the Armorer option is needing a decent dex score to help with the medium armor. But overall, this turned out being a surprisingly strong build that continue to find joy in each time a session comes up with this character.
Side note, I took on the warlock level by making a deal with my patron to help diffuse the situation our cleric created.

The initial inspiration for this build was Batman actually 🤣🤣 the initial idea was to do an undead patron instead of fathomless to do more fear stuff (like I'm Batman begins), but fathomless helped to fill in the offensive gaps. Glad we're on the same wavelength though

Artificer and Warlock.... You were imbued with magical powers because the patron noticed your abilities with mechanical devices. It has given you the direction to create it's physical body as it currently only exists in the ethereal plane.
You can flavor the tentacles as ethereal in nature. They can only take form for brief periods of time.

i've always loved the idea of a Artificer / warlock multiclass and youre doing it so well keep it up! i took you´re but instead of Fathomless warlock i went with a Undead. So you have this really cool walking armor of the undead which you got trapped in after making pact with a undead so ur allies never would get hurt again but the cost of you being forever trapped in this suit of metal.
    Again really cool concept :D

For flavor, i just realize i already played this exact character (in a game that wasn't dnd but my abilities where very similar) for like a years before the campaign died early. My character was an elf "wizard" who had one arm. He used a prosthetic arm made of clay to fight and protect both himself and his allies (this arm is the armor of this character). As for the fathomless part, this arm being made of clay could change form at will and even detach part of itself (the tentacle). For all the water magic things, this character studied a lot of things, so i could just have learned it (so no patron at all). But, a patron is still something we could consider. The clay arm used magical gemstones to work. We could say that, during its creation, all of its experiment failed, until he found a very powerful gemstone that was found by sailors into the deep ocean, and this gemstone was powerful enough to make the arm work. So the patron is just a magical rock from the sea (so the patron's character is basically his own arm, which is kinda funny).

    I'd go with something like:
First level you are some sort of fugitive/political oppositor from Gitzerai society, you have been held captive for many years and that's why you have very bad STR and DEX. That also explain why you always hide for the first levels
During your escape you've stumble upon some wicked piece of armor (just the helmet or the shoulder) and putting it on let some kind of tentacular embrion linking you to this armor, insistently asking to craft the missing part of the armor.
When the armor is complete (aka when you reach lvl 3, you start develop your warlock power since your patrón has regained most of già powers throgh the complition of the armor, and it's some elder Wicked tentacular being trapped in this cursed armor, but he's offering you power and protection against your Gitzerai enemies, so it's this tension for this symbiotic relationship with his patron which I think Is very cool and unique, since it's not very often that your patron is so present and close to live in the same armor with you, and he needs you for everything, even for moving around. But you are nothing without the armor, so it's kinda equal

honestly also as for my flavor, im thinking of going githzerai as well with my character being 'technically' half githzerai so that the lore can be that he was the son to a lady who owned a small library whos father was a githzerai monk who had passed through their small and dreary town on is journeys to fight back against the mindflayers and while there, he met my guys mom as he was looking for a book store to pass the time as he waited for his allies to find the clues they were looking for to lead them to their quarry and it went from there as you'd expect. ultimately he did have to leave as he not only felt his mission was too important to abandon already but now with someone to care for and the mind flayers clue pointing to them pining for this portion of the empire, he felt it all the more important to stop them NOW. ultimately a year later after he left, the PC was born and was a brillant kid who took to reading all the time to learn all he could especially since his jagged ears and dark spots on his face as well as later in life how while he wasnt as skinny as a normal gith in the least, he still didnt have any muscle or bulk to his frame with all of this compounding to make him a social outcast only pushing him to his books all the more. as he grew up, he started to learn from the 1 book about simple magics that was there in the shop and to special intrest in the chapters on enchantment and infusion, and that interest would lead in his teenage years to him finding a blacksmith shop to apprentice at to both learn the trade of blacksmithing but also to give himself easy access to chances with the owners permission of course, to try his hand at enchantment and infusion. ultimately he did eventually decide he wanted to see more of the world when his mother told him the truth about who his father was and what he was doing and knowing the dangers of the world as well as especially the dangers related to his father and what his mission was, he knew he would need protection to stand up to it all and started work on a suit of armor to protect him and grant him the strength he would need to fight.
ultimately he couldnt make the suit on his own and his master who had started to learn infusion and enchantment alongside him due to seeing its benefits and it allow him to sell portions of his goods at MUCH higher prices especially with the PC's silver tounge, he agreed to help him make this masterpiece with the reason for the pc not starting with it being that he got run out of town probably with the main party after getting caught up with them in bad business that made everyone involved look guilty of heinous crimes. now the dm could either have this go on till the party hits level 3 OR could have them leave but the old blacksmith knew that the PC wasnt to blame and feeling sorrowful that he couldnt convince them otherwise, the completes the base suit even though he does it in a rush and not was well as it should have been done and uses teleportation paired with using a send scroll to tell the pc where to find it and so at level 3, when they go to a town just have the PC pick up the suit there.
now as for where i add the warlock flavor, it will be a great old one but not one of the ocean like cthulu but perhaps another that could have made a deal with a segment of either the mind flayers or even with the githyanki to help portions of them escape the slavery before the race fully escaped with the lore being that the PCs bloodline just so happened to be one of them and as such this old one seeing the suit of armor made by the PC and seeing the PC grow decides to take an interest in a descendant of those it granted power to oh so long ago to try to see if this amusing mortal can entertain them like the last ones did and hence anything thats eldtritch themed you will take. beyond that you also will take 1 level into divie soul sorcerer to get access to the command spell to fit the other portion of the theme where most of your magic will be enchantment magic to control and maniupulate the battle field while you run around blasting the shit out of people with your eldtrich powered ironman suit with the same int and chr as tony stark and while blasting fuckers with eldtrich blast :D

In a similar manner to attack power, crowd control, and team support, I'm making a triple multiclass Artificer Artillerist (14), Divination Wizard (5), and Clockwork Soul Sorcerer (1). The goal of the build is to be able to dish out moderate damage/AOE spells while controlling the fate of my allies and enemies through Portant and Restore Balance. Could be a front-liner if necessary, thanks to a 22 AC (with correct infusions) and 170 HP taking the average hit dice, but I feel medium/long range spell attacks will be the most effective combat strategy. I'd be happy to share the entire build if interested.

I'm late to the comments but I was thinking Venom or maybe some kind of Plasmoid theme. Being able to reach underground and attack people with your tendrils and then forming big goop fist for your thunder gauntlets. Most of your spells like web or blur could just be you using the goop as a defensive obstacle or hardening it as armor to block attacks.
Maybe it's some alien symbiote from Limbo. It could even be your patron. Or it's like a new life form that your patron sent to assist you.

This is how I picture it. You are a Githzerai engineer who loves to create with his hands as well as his mind. You're traveling on a merchant ship destined for new lands to show of your inventions. The ship is attacked by pirates and is destroyed. You manage to survive, floating along the ocean, barely clinging to life. You call out one last prayer to the gods for salvation. The ocean opens up wide as a whirlpool pulls you under to the depths of the ocean. Mere seconds from drowning, you come face to face with a Kraken. The Kraken was intrigued by the inventions you created that sank to the ocean floor. It sees great potential in you. The Kraken saves you by bestowing you powers in exchange for your servitude. You are now a soldier in a war between the ocean gods and the surface dwellers that pollute their waters. Imbuing magic and machine, you are the "Armorlock".

I’m currently playing a similar build (Armorer 3/Warlock 1 Warforged with the Seeker as a patron) I decided not to dump Dex completely (took 12) but did dump Str. I’m going to take my next 2 levels as Artificer (taking Telekinetic at 4 Artificer and Extra Attack at level 5). I’ve been debating between Armor of Agathys, Hex, and Hellish Rebuke as my Warlock spells since I don’t have much to do with my bonus action unless I use ER for the speed boost or Shielding Aurora. Probably need to shore up defenses so maybe Mind Sharpener Robes to help with concentration or an Invocation. Not great at range (Eldritch Blast with a 14 Charisma isn’t very efficient) but the character is pretty sticky and a solid AC tank. Note, we get a free feat at Level 1 and I took Sentinel based on the character’s backstory.

So I'm not sure how familiar you are with Magic the Gathering, but I had come up with this combo before this video, but failed horribly at execution. Recently, i had thought the flavor could be in the case of a Phyrexian Invasion theme for the artificer. Phyrexian are inter-planar evils of eldritch horror cyborgs essentially that take over bodies without the target even knowing. Perfect subject for an Artificer/warlock albiet it would not work with the Fathomless patron as well as it might with Undying, Great Old One, or some other patrons.

  • @cyanide7270

Im wondering if its plausible to tri-class with Abjuration to get the Arcane Ward, especially since you would then get decent spell slots to use on Armor of Agathys, giving the VERY nice Arcane Ward combo. Or if too much, just straight up replace Warlock with Wizard, giving more tankiness with the Ward, and a much wider selection of spells and cantrips to utilize.
That also said, im personally of the opinion that Feats should be thematic to your PC. So in the instance of "getting sick of Fey-Touched", id go about not giving them that Feat in the first place, since they have no ties to the Fey. Instead, Shadow-Touched would be more appropriate, since this screams Gith-Mindflayer Cthulu cult, which again would work very well since you can change your armor between the Tanky boy into the Sealthy Boy and give yourself invisibility to aid with that.
Fiendish Vigor is also, depending on the person, a superfluous Invocation to take as the Armorer feature grants you a Bonus Action to grant yourself your Art level worth in THP, So would look at replacing Fiendish Vigor as soon as possible once you hit level 5 or 6 in Artificer.

In some way or another, you might have had conflict with Githyanki from your home plane and they made you do the astral sea equivalent to 'walk the Plank'. A dying god in limbo plucked you out of your tortures state, not for gain but out of kindness given it's own situation. But i would say a 6 level into warlock is just enough, the guardian coil will definetly help reduce the dmg just enough. Then all the way artificer. Have been playing and Dm'ing since 2.nd edition and a fullplate before lvl.6 is like 1/100 of a chance. That said, the build seem solid enough, would be fun to playtest.

One significant *weakness* of this build is that its Initiative rolls ARE gonna *SUH-HUCK,* severely limiting its ability to get off those AoE debuff/battlefield control spells without interfering with allies. It might be better to forego the minor temporary HP bonus in favor of the Eldritch Blast/Repelling Blast combo. At least that way, it can knock a few enemies back into its Web spell.

Flavor wise, I was thinking more of a failed inventor who decided to strike a pact with an ancient being from below the depths of their homeland for talent, brilliance and power unfathomable by most mortal beings, to achieve what their role model of a sibling wanted for them before they got sick. Which is why the Artilock is traveling, searching for a cure or an extremely rare and dangerous ingredient required to make a gadget to be able to bring their sibling back from a coma. Might be oddly specific but its what I thought of

I mean, flavorwise the armor can be just as easily made from a carapace as opposed to metal. Why not use the theme of a steadily evolving deep sea predator? You can even throw a claw on your armor to grapple enemies instead of punching them. You'd be a psionic Aquaman in an iron man suit, eating well in an environment where strength is everything, and you attain it by any means necessary.

I think that the warlock mc doesnt bring so much to the table. To do those things, I think we are better off going full Armorer, and maybe getting these amazing lvl20 capstone for a tank, and all infusions spread on your armor.

Isnt the Fathomless tentacle going to have a garbage To Hit? 14 cha for the majority of play time seems like a waste. Seems like you could get more out of Genie warlock, since their features don't really rely on your charisma. Personally I would either pick a Lock subclass that doesnt care about Cha (like genie) or just ignore Warlock and go War wizard instead. War wizard gives you Int to initiative and a reaction +4 to a saving throw. Much more reliable imo.

Because you can cast the spell at will (like a cantrip) you can repeatedly cast it until you roll a 4 on the die, so as long as you have a minute or so between combat you can very likely get the maximum

You can't take the armor off. Or let me rephrase that, you are the armor. What appeared to be some kind of horrid iron maiden from a long forgotten technologically advanced society was something you got to close to. When it activated it killed the creature that you once were. The armor is the thing that gives you shape and control, because you are no longer a humanoid creature. You are now a black ooze living inside a suit of biomechanical armor that keeps you alive. This is now all of your abilities. Web - you use your actual flesh as a resource, same with your fathomless tentacles. You can't talk until you learn how to utilize the communication systems which are in a dead language. You don't eat or sleep, you don't have any of the familiar desires, itches, urges, or impulses that made living in a body a normal experience. Now you have new ones that you don't understand: facing certain directions because of atmospheric electrical charges, the obsession need to scan everything, your constant awareness of "flow" because you are a liquid.
Eventually you learn how to actually fully control your armour including the matter refabrication protocols which use about 2 hours to fully process and create a new body for your, and you can finally take the armor off. Only now everything feels alien and "off" now. It's been too long and being a solid is somehow just horribly WRONG now. Also it takes about another 5 minutes to put the armor back and grind and digest you into a paste again with just as much and fear as when it happened the first time.

A githzerai, born physically weak, has been dismissed, denided, and looked down upon by his people for being a worthless fighter against the githyanki. After years of this, he had enough and decided to change this so he can be of worth to his people, if not to them, then just to anyone. So he decides to do some research to have the neccessary knowledge to tinker himself some armor to overcome his physical weaknesses. In his research, he stumbles across an intresting ancient tome, which, upon reading, he discovered it to be of a fathomless creature of the astral sea. As he was reading it, his patron appeared to him in a vision and he felt it trying to consume him, the githzerai, terrified for his life, offers to makes a pact with it so that it doesnt destroy him, entailing that in exchange of a favor he does for the patron, he does not get eaten, but he cleverly mentions that he does not have much power, and could use the power it can gift him to be able to do the favor. The patron seems to agree and it lets him go. The githzerai returns to his reasearch as he thinks about the fact that he has given his soul to a creature of the deep.
If you start at level one, you could have him be banished by his people since he researched for too long but without any results, so he tries to be worthy for other people in the material plane (aka he goes to find his adventuring party)
If he gets to level 3, other githzerai are unimpressed and unconvenced with his methods and kick him out.
This is a possible way to fit everything together using some dnd lore. You could also have a flaw from this which makes him need other people's approval for RP purposes, make him a quiet studious type that surpsingly has a silver tongue (high charisma), and his defensive tactics are used to impress people and be useful to them. Maybe even have him with a goal to be unbanished and forgiven by his race, perhaps his ideals could be something about determination and not giving up, or having knowledge being the most important thing because it can take the weakist to higher levels of power.
