In this video Peachy faces the toughest of challenge, to paint a unit of imperial guard models that have been sitting on his desk gathering dust for around a year. Will he find the motivation to cure his hobby burnout? Maybe. Will he make sassy comments about brown vs black rims? Definitely.

I was really not feeling my Blooded Kill team about 2 weeks ago, and for the first time ever thinking about stripping them and starting over and i just wasn’t happy with how them, and it made me not want to sit down and paint anything at all. I decided to slap a layer of contrast paint over what I had just because I wanted to see if just putting some paint on them would re-ignite the desire to paint anything, and once the contrast dried, it was exactly what they needed to suddenly look like something I was excited to highlight and finish, and now I’m really proud of them, and working on the last model!

Thanks Peachy and team for making this video. It probably won’t be the most watched but it’s very meaningful for those of us who have watched it. We all hit a bit of a painting wall and it’s heartening to be reminded that that is as true for professional painters as amateurs. It’s great to push ourselves but it’s also totally ok to take it easy and get some models done that might not be your best, might not be as good as the rest / others of the army, might not have gone through the same processes or used the exact same paints. They are still awesome and they might well help you get back in the groove . Thanks guys. Keep up the wonderful videos.

This video is ace & love the message here.
Rolling back my standards has been a big breakthrough for me, I was always trying to paint everything to completion. I was getting disheartened at the time it was taking me to do things.
For some reason I shifted my view to ‘good enough’ painting, so for 2023 I’ve shifted to ‘battle ready plus’ painting standard for everything to get it on the table. I thought I’d hate this, but I’ve really enjoyed completing things and getting units done. Love this message and would encourage anyone to try it out and shift perspectives!

Ha, ha, I suppose for Peachy a year on the shelf is a long time, but I've got projects on hiatus for 3, 5 and more years. I've since come to terms with it as so long as I'm doing something I can't complain about projects half done. That happens mainly because I have plenty of projects on the go at once - the main tactic I have to prevent hobby burnout. As soon as I lose my mojo on a project I jump to another one, I look at it like a surfer constantly trying to catch the next wave and always keeping moving.
I almost always base first, so I never start from a blank 'canvas' and if I get basecoats and washes on and then pause and go onto something else that's cool. I know when I come back most of the tedious work is done and the more creative highlights and blending is ready for me, so that I can move them forward. Bottom line - every project has its time, even if that is years from when I first started it. As rewarding as it is to finish a model, there is nothing like the feeling of finally finishing a model that's been 8 to 10 years on the painting table!

I watched this last night while I was finally making headway through getting a unit of Repentia painted for my Sisters of Battle. Great kit and awesome looking models, but the moment I finished assembling and priming them and had to actually start painting them, I just lose all interest. There's so many awkward nooks and crannies and tiny little details to have to pick out, it feels like they're going to monopolize all of my hobby time for ages. I don't like to switch projects once I start them, so my hobby productivity plummeted for about a week or two as a result.
Like you say in the video however, once you sit down and put colour on them for long enough that you can start to see what they're going to look like, the motivation just comes flooding back and suddenly I couldn't be more excited to be working on this unit and to see it through to the end. This happens every single time I go to paint a unit for Adepta Sororitas, without fail - but I still get surprised every time it happens. 🤷‍♂
But anyway, Team Black Base Rims forever so thumbs down and unsubscribe. 😂

I like this lesson in breaking the painter's block. Myself, I often launch habitually into the slog, edge highlighting being the most required and yet most unrewarding things I end up spending time on (truly, no one cares about edge highlighting, ever. And yet, if you don't do it, people will be all critical about not having done it :P ) Sometimes you just gotta crack on and find that vibe. I dig it!

I find that if I can batch paint 5 at a time, and do each stage consistently, I can churn out whole units with no problem. My advice is to avoid doing bits and pieces of odd models (and don't leave anything half finished to start something else), but rather tackle a squad/character at a time as bite-size mini projects.

My theory, based on what Peachy's saying here, my own experience, and anecdotal evidence from friends, is that the issue isn't to do with losing one's hobby mojo, but instead stems from the fact that base coating just *isn't* that fun. Highlighting? Shading? Applying basing materials? Could do them for days, but applying base coats? Blegh.

That Ventrillian Ogryn is mega! Inspiring me to try some kitbashing & straying away from the box art colours 😅

    Beautiful scheme!
Also it looks like one of peachy's brushes doesn't want to hold a point, like the crappy army painter brushes I bought once. You can see it at 5:15, it's pointy, then by 5:19 it has splayed out all over the place! Brutal.

Great video with a great message. Just a quick note to say a couple of the paints were annotated in the wrong order in the basing, think pale sand was first, and might want to consider different colour fonts for the pale colours, white text on white grey background was a bit tough to read, but keep up the great work 👍

Honestly you lads should be checking out Duncan's Two Thin Coats line of paints. Great quality and the washes are so nice.

Ok, now I want to turn my Vet Guardsman in to Ventrillian Nobels! They look so cool. I went for Miasman Redcowls.

Complete tangent, but have you considered using some of Wargames Atlantic’s Grognard Ogres for Ventrillian Ogryns?
    Excellent work by the way!

@@thepaintingphase I’ve also just realised, they also do plastic “landsknecht ogres” now, which could be a good source of Empire-style heads/bits too!

I think they turned out great. Sometimes you need a different approach to get things done because it's easier to keep going as soon as you actually got going :)

it doesnt matter if the jackets look slightly different anyway, realistically when it comes to a military some will be slightly different shades anyway

Exactly…..took me a while to realise that was fine…..annoyed it took me so long tbh 😂

I think to a degree it will be one of those things that you notice every time you look at the models but literally no one else ever notices.

I've been designing in my head an Ultramarines army. I'd love to build so that I have the different companies, so use the company colors as rim colours.
