I think this version is better than the original. The music in the original seems to make light of the words, while this acoustic style gives the lyrics a beautiful, haunted feel which seems more appropriate.

Covers are just another example of people taking something they enjoy and trying to recreate it. Even if all their doing to "recreate" it, is to replace the original's power and depth with blank stares and bland singing, they're not pretending the song's their own. If anything they're giving people who aren't familiar with Of Monsters And Men, a taste of their music and providing it with the publicity it deserves.
Or maybe they just want to show off their singing ability and also want to have fun. Some people aren't good at writing music but they want to enjoy singing so they do covers.
