For anyone wondering, this song is about separation. Nanna, the female singer, has stated that it is about her brother - the king, and herself - the lionheart.
According to an statement from OMAM, "The song was written after her brother left with their father to Canada, leaving her and her mother behind in Iceland. She missed her brother and wished they could’ve grown up together."
*So i take it that the official video, in a fantasy, world depicts it.*
The kingdom falling apart - as the divorce of her parents.
The girl running after her brother - as how she missed her brother.
The monsters and bad guys - they could be negative emotions that appeared after her brother left *or,* a way to show how the world felt "evil" after she split up with her brother *or,* just be there as characters in that fantasy world.

Umm how bout they could represent the fricken heartless parents that ripped apart siblings(half or not) is what i thought when i heard about this story years ago. Back when the top of the comments had the poor couple who lost a child to a heart defect. I'm not sure how comments work on RUclips but who the hell wants to knock that story down a peg?

Such a sad topic :(. My heart goes out to Ms. Nanna. I have had similar struggles with my divorce and with my relationship with my children. I cannot pretend to understand what it feels like to be separated from a sibling. My children were my life, and when I choose to give up custody of them, it broke something inside of me (soz for venting). There is a saying that your sibling/s is the person that you will know the longest in your life. I choose to move away from my family of origin and am now living back with them to take care of my parents. I am now getting to know my brother after being gone for over 20 years, and we are very different people. My hope for you is that you are able to continue being you. My prayer for you is that you be the best you that you can be, and my wish for you is that if you ever meet your brother, you treat him with love, kindness, and respect.
And you have one of the most amazing voices I have ever heard :)
The visual narrative in this video is touching, but for me especially it's come to represent the relationship that I have with my son who was taken from me by a faulty court system and a judge who did not believe that a single, disabled woman could "as effectively raise a child as well as a married father" and put him in the hands of a man who was ignored his existence almost entirely for 10 years. This video has become our special little way of acknowledging to one another that I will always fight for him even if I can't win, I will always find him, and I will always follow him no matter how far the world pulls him away from me.

K so here is the rub I have now been up to date with Icelandic music for a while now though bjork jonsi/Alex now of monsters and men I can say I personally know descendants from Iceland I know that they have few things to fill their time and music and art are in abundance their I love and respect their culture and would love to just sit and talk to them!!!

She then encounters the 5 men which she goes on a journey with. She then finds a monster which she didn't kill because she knew that was his brother (or son), you can tell because she was happy to see him and she didn't kill it off.
but this song is about her brother, most of people know about it. if you check the lyrics, she is telling about the folklore you can hear in Iceland, in the same time, you can notice she misses him and even far away, she won't leave or forget him

Yep me too, funny thing is I didn't know this band's name but I knew their songs. Was a pain in the ass trying to find them with only a handful of lyrics in your head.
After two siblings have been separated because of a divorce, they try to reconnect with one another. They insist that they're still the same people they were before the divorce but as the sister grew older, she changed (which is what I believe those floaty animals represented. Since she lost her animal and her brother didn't.) Because of this, they are unable to reform the bond they once had.

Why does this video have a sad ending?
The vocalist wrote the lyrics based on her and her brother having been taken away from each other in childhood due to divorce. They almost never saw each other, 1 in Canada, 1 in Iceland. She gave the video production company freedom to put their take on it, but also told them she liked "dark" stories, and that she was fine with endings to stories that aren't happy or are ambiguous/unresolved.

This song is meant to be about a brother and sister who were separated during a war. The older sister goes to look for her brother after she escapes her prison. She finds out he has been killed (the thing taking him away in the music video) and accepts that she is going to be killed and reunited with her brother. (This is all assumptions I think this is what happened)

As the bands influences build heavily on icelandic folk music it should be noted that Icelandic tales and folklore have a tradition of sad or generally unpleasing endings. It wouldn't be awfully strange if the band chose to carry on that tradition.
My bestfriend recently passed away at the age of 38.. Her life was cut short. She was a beautiful soul and im crushed.. She died from a massive heart attack. This was our song. I miss you more than words can describe dara. I feel dead without you! Fly with the angels till we meet again.

They seriously don't have a bad song. Lol I saw an article called "where are they now"....you know like they do for bands from like the 80s lol. Their last album was in 2019 and was great. Somehow their music just feels Norse inspired, I can't put a finger on it but even without the imagery of their videos it feels Norse Pagan. And I love it. And they have the emotional storytelling that I am.just stunned by, especially not being American they speak to a lot of emotion that comes from the despair of being American.

+meera nepal I have a theory: abandon the idea of a certain band member with a prolific ability to write tunes. In my somewhat cynical view of the world I think it may involve a fancy musical note algorithm ran on a bank of supercomputers inputting sounds to a bank of disembodied human brains. The real genius to the whole diabolical scheme is to accurately track higher levels of dopamine in the brains(disembodied and all) when a favorable note sequence is found. They say imitation is they highest form of flattery. I disagree I think being compared to the diabolical schemes fueled by corporate greed is the highest. :-P

I read a theory online about how the Little Talks video is a continuation of this, years later. The two had a metamorphosis that I suspect comes with their species and the sister is the main spirit/entity that guides the four men across the lands and away from danger. Then she is reunited with her brother who has become a giant beast thing because of whatever happened on that ship...but anyways they're reunited. I like to think some backup for this claim is that the sister's clothing makeup and look is similar to the spirit in the Little Talks video.

I love the video because I perceive the girl and boy as friends (rather than siblings idk just bear with my analogy) and these two friends are trying so hard to be united again they jump off cliffs for eachother but at the end somehow remain distant.
And this personally is some type of allegory for what's going in my life (college wise) my friend and I are trying so hard to go to a university in the same country at least but nothing's working out. And so I'm left to watch her leave while life (similar to the evil creatures in the video) drains me down.

I wonder if the black scary machine monsters often seen in this video are references to the ones in 'dirty paws'. I think dirty paws is an analogy; the bees represent some sort of monsterous race that lived underground, and they "decided the sky wasn't big enough for them all". King and Lionheart could just be a turn of events that happened in this giant war. The birds could be some sort of superior power that called upon a creature known as "dirty paws". Another thought; what if the girl shown in "King and Lionheart" is also the girl in "Little Talks"? What if the bees knew she could have such enormous power so they locked her away in that rock thing? This ones a stretch; what if that cat thingie in the end of "Little Talks" is somehow her brother(featured in this video), because they are both equally powerful? She did smile when she saw it, and it seemed like they were traveling to it...but that's just a thought.

I lost my brother to a freak accident in August 2017, it’s coming up on that time of year, the Holidays always hit the hardest without him and my Grandmother. A kingdom once bloomed, for it was rich and colourful. The kingdom was so vibrant that the happiness that loomed in the air manifested into its own being. This being represented good in its purest form. It would protect the kingdom.
Another kingdom existed, this one was a contradiction of the first kingdom. It was a grey and miserable kingdom, who's economy suffered due to the king only spending money on his army. The city was so pathetic that the misery that loomed in the air manifested into a being. This being represented misery in its purest form. The King of this kingdom saw the first kingdom, and grew jealous of its success. This jealousy and anger powered the being, allowing it to become a pure manifestation of hate. It became incredibly powerful.
Eventually, the second kingdom used its army to conquer the first kingdom, their army far superior to that of the first kingdom. The manifestation of happiness tried to defend the kingdom, but was overrun by the second manifestation and thus weakened.
The king and Queen of the first Kingdom were killed, with their son and daughter being captured to prevent an heir from taking the throne. They locked them up, and took over the kingdom. The daughter however saw an apparition, which helped her escape. It was another form of the manifestation, love, for the daughter loved her brother and wished to be reunited with him. This pushed her to find him.
The son saw an apparition as well, which helped him escape his prison. The apparition was another form of the manifestation, hope. For he hoped for a better future, to be reunited with his sister and for a Kingdom now fallen to be a kingdom one day restored.
While escaping, one of the apparitions was consumed by the manifestation of hate, and was erased. It was love. Despite losing the apparition, the daughter continued to find her brother.
The brother was still being guided by hope, and found himself in a secret vessel used as a means of emergency escape. The vessel turned on, and began to fly away. The apparition disappeared, while his sister who found him watched as he flew away, Saddened, but joyful that her brother escaped. She then began to run away from the other Kingdom's soldiers who continued to chase her.
In the kingdom now ruined, there only remained a sliver of the first manifestation, hope. Hope for the heir to return back to his kingdom, and to restore it back to what it once was. It continued to encircle the kingdom, too small to be seen by the giant manifestation of hate and misery, for only one person in the kingdom now had hope: the sister.
