LOW SPEED Film Comparison // Mamiya RB67 Pro SD

- As I'm breaking into the film world, I'm becoming more familiar that 400 ISO (especially Portra 400) film is a crowd-favorite based off its overall versatility in most lighting situations. This got me thinking about the low speed films (50, 100, 160). As a result, I wanted to test Cinestill 50D, Ektar 100, and Portra 160. Although I didn't shoot the films in a static, controlled environment, I was very pleased with what I discovered from each stock. Even if they're lower speed, they still kill in most situations.

It’s beautiful you had 101 people subscribed when you made this video! As of today, you have 101,000 subscribers. That's very inspirational!
For 10 years, I have carried my RB in a back pack because youtubers said that was what to do. I hated having to put it down, unzip and get the camera out then put it away. Got a black rapid strap for a mamiya 645 pro tl with power winder and elf and it's a breeze to carry on that strap. But the rb doesn't have a spot to attach the safety strap so I tried extending the RB op tech strap all the way, wearing it cross body with the camera resting on my R hip or presses against my side to relieve some of the weight. It quickly swings into action. I keep the film advanced and don't forget to cock the shutter because can't see out the view finder if don't. I saw you carrying this 6 lb cinder block light a football, no need to to do that and forget the strap around your neck if you value your c4-5 vertibrae. This makes this camera fairly easy to carry and yesterday did a 3 hour walk with no problem with 2 other lenses in the bag over the L shoulder.
I find it amazing that there is such a resurgence in film photography...with nearly 50 years experience in photography, film is my first love. So I have some tips to make it perhaps a little easier for you.
Color film, regardless of manufacturer has less latitude than black and white. Roughly five stops for color film but you can get upwards of 7-9 stops of latitude for b/w depending on exposure and processing. (Read as Zone system)
For color reversal (Ektachrome etc, meter for the BIRGHTEST COLOR, such as red or yellow. There is NO latitude in reverals film. Color negative film meter as you would for b/w...for the shadows.
Saturation and color bias are subject to manufacturer. I loved Fuji 50D over Kodachrome (back in the day) but was equally in love with Kodak b/w films...up to Tri-X.
I try to look at relative film speed as nothing more than difference in stops/shutter speed balance. ISO 50 is one stop slower than ISO 100 etc. With the RB (or RZ) 67 it's always prudent to have a tripod handy. Finally, experiment with reciprocity effect...that is the color shift in color film over long exposures....usually over (I believe) one minute or more. I've done exposures up to 20 minutes and absolutely love the results.
Great work man. Loved all of these shots. 100 subs? Man you're at 18.2k as I type this. You grew fast!
Love this channel already. Literally all the pictures are great. Can't wait to buy one for myself. I'd try to redscale a roll of film though
Those Porta shots on the beach are fantastic!
I'm so glad I found your channel! you're personality shines through the screen :)
Thank you so much!!
Ahhh again an underrated artist..
Love u bruh!!!.
Man these shots hit me hard! Just found your channel, One of my favourites..keep up this amazing channel! Peace.
I am so honored. Welcome to the family
Thanks for this! I’m looking forward to trying out some Ektar 100
this dude is so entertaining. dope vid, dope pics
you should deff post your playlist!
all of your videos have amazing music 🌊
*points at the sun*
"look at that golden hour right there"
damn, I sound hella stupid hahahahahaha
Ayy those 160 shots were fire, the golden tones worked so well with golden hour especially the beach/coast shots, the lighthouse one was definitely my favourite
those were good pictures. I am glad to have seen them.
My prefered films have been Kodak Gold 400 and Tri-X. I shot some FP4 once and was the grain was overpowering. I worked in a film lab in SF and was always curious about Portra but never tried it. You're making me want to try a lot more stocks now that I'm getting back into film.
Very cool photos, keep up the good work
Thanks! Releasing two more film-related videos this week
i'm in love w the 2nd picture in the intro. Good stuff!
i was also wondering what the song is @2:00
Nice work. Instant sub
Love it! Thanks for sharing.
thanks for watching :)
Great Pictures!
Love the cinestill line. Would love to try it in 120. Also really helpful to know how well Ektar performs at sundown. It's usually advised to shoot it during sunny conditions, but you got some amazing beach shots with it.
yeah, the saturation would strike well on a sunny day for the Ektar 100! I hope the price tag on the Cine50 won't kill your wallet like it did mine
Love your videos man. Curious about what lens you were using here? Looking to pick up an RB soon and am interested in finding a good walk-around lens. If I typically prefer to shoot with a 50mm on a 35mm camera, what would you suggest as an equivalent with the RB?
Best,
Cody
When I grow up, I want to be just like you 🔥
time to shave 8 inches off your overall height then
What were you’re settings on while golden hour? So sharp and crisp!
Chris love your work. Your channel will grow so much i think. I watch all your videos. One question what is the name and singer of song @1:50 ?
okey i found it. ''maxime. - empty''
What software did you use to edit all of this footage?
I love shooting in Frisco
Can i ask what your aperture was for the Portra 160 shots ?
what mamiya rb67 lens are you using in this video?
Are you using the 127mm lens?
You should try Ektar at night, that’s when it really comes alive
I don't see you using a meter. Are you metering with your phone?
Does anyone know which lens is he using?
where is the fuji film?
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
