The greatness of it all... I know no words that can express what this music does to my soul... Everybody in the world should stop everything for a few minutes and actively listen and watch this performance. Thank you so much for the upload. Shanti Shanti
A number of people have pointed out that it can be more interesting to hear a musician struggling, and still working, to get their ideas out, than it is to hear a "completed" virtuoso who can play whatever they can think. The smartest ones like McLaughlin and Miles Davis are ALWAYS changing things up to keep themselves alert. For that matter, both the third and FOURTH Led Zeppelin albums were criticized for not being "Zeppelin enough"!?! Oh yah, we smartz.
This band embodies whatever it is that makes music transcendent. The sound of joy/bliss. Apparently there is currently a backlash against mixing genres in music. Agree with J McLaughlin when-he said “Purists are the bane of music”. The track Face to Face from Shakti’s Natural Elements album would be in my top 3 favourite pieces of music. Music doesn’t get any better than what this band produced IMO. Re the Pepsi logo ..... Shakti .... the “Real thing” 😀
The adoption of the hindu arabic eight note scale in the western world was concurrent with related number systems and mathematics. Tempering came with the western thinking of standardization, allowing the same tone series to construct different scales. Superimposing five note scales of african, asian music over western scales presents ambiguous notes. Resolving the differences creates blues. What you see here is six thousand years of history coming full circle!!!!
Yes, as uncasist has already mentioned, this is Shakti performing in Finland, Pori Jazz Festival 17.7.1976. The festival was and still is held on July and back in the day the Finnish tv used to show highlights from the festival on upcoming months. That doesn't happen anymore.
Thank you for uploading this fantastic vid, Alexsh. The name is of this song(?) is "What need I have for this, what need I have for that, I am dancing at the feet of my Lord, All is bliss, All is bliss". A rather long name for a musical piece, but the piece is also long (and I wish it went on and on...). The name is not "Get Down and Shruti"; which is another playful but shorter piece.
Talk about irony! The survival and thriving of beauty in the midst of...everything else ❤️ Instead of complaining we just shine! And boy do they shine! I think it may be the perfect setting, as much as it threw me when I saw the stage! 😂😀✌️❤️
Agreed; the corporate class insists upon being omnipresent. They may be, but I hope the disgust with them grows to a critical mass soon; they're killing off the planet.
Great footage. This isn't actually 'What Need Have I For This...' but an unrecorded piece called 'Nada' (the caption is nearly right) which appears on late-period Shakti bootlegs.
Nata is actually right, as opposed to nada, which means sound, cuz the scale they are playing is called Nata or Nattai, a derivative or janya of the parent scale Chala nattai and has the notes Sa Ri3 Ma1 Pa Ni3 Sa symmetrically
It's not "What Need" (possibly the longest song title ever) because it lacks the descending "blues" figure that John plays on "What Need" (and which kinda sounds like he copped from Jack Bruce's playing on the live version of "Spoonful").
The whole tittle of this composition was: What need Have i for this ,What need Have I for that, i am dancing at the feet of my Lord(Allah) -all is bliss, all is bliss, all is bliss. thanx shakti and the devotees .
At that time they probably didn't realise what fantastic work they had done. 40 years later we still have nobody coming closer
I swear
That also so playfully
No one can come closer and this will not happen again. Such formations happen with God's grace.
Certainly in India..where majority of Indian classical musicians are struck at deadend
😮I think musical concerts have only devolved from this point onwards to have reached the digital menace that they are now.😢

I love McLaughlin's playing in the very early Shakti; you can hear his Veena training so clearly.

Viku ji and Zakir Saheb used to share flat in their early days in States. That bond ❤️
Thank you for uploading although this is Pori Jazz Festival 1976 and the tune is called Nata
This is the absolute cream of virtuosity and musicality.
Thank you for this fantastic upload.
really love McLaughlin's arpeggiated chords when he's backing the violin lead

Re the Pepsi logo ..... Shakti .... the “Real thing” 😀
I saw this group at a university gig in the 70s-they were fantastic and their music has been in my head ever since -a wonderful upload -thank you!
No words for this greatness

i can say big words too.
@@tightirl Pity you can't tie them to big ideas.
Hindu Arabic...😁😁 I am hearing that for the first time.

Any idea why the title?
Kinda sad to play this sacred music behind a PEPSI logo....

May be even Pepsi was blessed then…
My God! Unbelieveble!!!!!!!
Really great contribution and a tough hard work can be seen by all Shakti team. My pranaam to all.
Okay, this video starts out with Shakti performing in 1976, not 1979 and they are playing at Pori Jazz in Finland.

Thanks for the upload. If it was 1979, why does the display on stage say "Pori Jazz 76"?
because title is wrong, in 79 the shakti experience was on with third album and tour but this is from their first year
@@XanAxDdu thanks
This show has been brought to you by....PEPSI....now have a day.
Hendrix is still in his own league by 10 miles. John is still great, though
Nah,John is more adventurous and energetic. The many different kinds of music he plays, including acoustic albums, also makes him more interesting.
@@janpacana6293 i think shakti sold 230 albums. He is adventurous, but sometimes the music doesn't inspire.
What kind of drum is that on th eleft side of the screen? It apears to ceramic.
It's a Ghatam.
Its is a Ghatam, a Carnatic classical percussion instrument.
Essentially, a clay pot. Ghatam means a pot.
Whom is the harmonium player?
Its not a harmonium - i think its a “Shruti box” which is used for setting the “Sur”
I Maybe wrong here so apologies if thats the case 😅

10:21 'sabhaash'!! 😂
that dude can play the hell outta that clay pot....
That dude has name - maestro TH Vikku Vinayakram. Probably the greatest proponent of ghatam (clay pot)
Who is playin the violin... kindly inform
L shankar
Lakshminaryanan Shankar
Pepsi kind of spoils it.
Pepsi. Ha!
