Installing RO System to Refrigerator | Remote Install

- In today’s world of contaminated this and that, water is one thing to pay close attention to. Here in Phoenix, AZ the water is pretty terrible. Its taste as well as the level of particulate matter is out of hand. Not to mention in the summer it’s so warm the tap water will reach close to 90*. To combat this problem I am installing a Reverse Osmosis system in my laundry room. This would be classified as a remote install since it’s not at the point of service. I will also be branching the line to two separate refrigerators to make chilled water and ice. I come across my share of issues with this project and hope if you encounter any during yours my struggles serve as a way for you to overcome them.

Thank you for taking the time to do this project. I am moving into a new build and the kitchen sink is also in the island. Thankfully, the refrigerator backs up against the laundry like yours does, so I’ve gotten some great insight into how I can make this work for us. I’m still planning out the system but I want RO ice and water. Your laundry is huge though, able to fit another fridge!

Thanks for his video. I’m in Arizona also and have the exact same set up with the island and laundry room. Being from the Midwest, our previous house had a basement and made it simple to connect the RO to the fridge. Your video is the only one that showed how to do it with the island setup. Since our laundry room does not have a sink, I think I will install one with the similar RO in it like you showed. Thanks again.

The double plated floor to ceiling "sheer wall" is installed as a code requirement in most Arizona Communities as a means of fire protection between the dwelling and the attached garage. Penetrations are not recommended either -especially unnecessary ones. If you must, use a 1-hour-rated fire caulk to keep your house from burning down in the middle of the night.
That’s a good thought. But this wall is inside the house in the laundry room. 12’ from the garage wall. Wouldn’t do much for fire protection there.

Wanted to give a big Thank you! This video helped me think through things, as I have the exact same GE RO system and was figuring out how to setup a purge line. I used your same configuration, except I did add a 3/8 to 1/4 coupler to the purge line and connected it to a 1/4 T in the exisitng 1/4 drain line, so I only have one line going to the drain instead of 2. That shoudn't cause any issues, right? Thank you for the video!
I don’t see it causing an issue. The purge line really doesn’t have much flow. Glad to hear it helped!
Just installed this after seeing it at Home Depot. Took a chance on it, did not have any leaks like you unfortunately did. Dodged a bullet I guess. Water tastes awesome. I didn’t bleach sanitize. Do we really need to do that?
Probably don't need to... In fact, I just changed out the filters a few weeks ago and didn't do the sanitization. Though I probably will next time to be sure.
I'm trying to do something similar (only 1 fridge though). I was thinking of installing in a cabinet above the fridge but might have to run the drain lines up through the attic and down to my hot water tank drain.
Would going vertical prevent draining or would run length cause similar issues?

Thanks so much for the compliment. From my understanding the drain line can travel upwards. I’m not sure how far though. I think the drain line uses the incoming line pressure but at a much lower rate because it’s post filter. One factor that would play into this would be the type of system. A drain that has a air gap, like you’d find at the faucet won’t go uphill.

I need to figure out if I can drill through the inside of the cabinets to make the drain run. If so, it should only be 10-15ft and wouldn't require me to go up through the attic. We'll see haha. Nothing seems to be straightforward or easy these days, but your video was more helpful than the 80 hours I spent googling 🤣.
@@stevens1903 drilling through the cabinets shouldn’t be a problem. I’ve seen installations like that before in my day job.
in other videos, pressure coming out of ro to fridge is too low and ice maker freezing over. did you get this problem? they installed a pump between ro and fridge.
I have not had that problem. Both freezers fill with ice. So far the reservoir in the cabinet has been able to keep up.

Awesome vid. Did you notice a difference in water pressure from the door water dispenser?
So far the water dispenser at both fridges is normal. The only time there is an issue is if you try to get water from both at the same time. We just have a rule to use one at a time. That has worked great.
What temperature do you think the fridge water comes out at?
It’s coming out of the fridge at 63*.
Did you purge old water out of water lines after install or did you forget?
I did purge. I did a chlorine rinse on the system through the purge line I installed. Then once hooked to the refrigerators I ran one full ice tray and 1 gallon of water through each before we started drinking the water. So far at 6 months use it's working great.
Those brass inserts will disintegrate with RO water. Best to use plastic everything.
I didn't know that. What causes the brass to fail?
@@DrivingForwardBuilds ro water is extremely aggressive. Stainless or plastic are best. If you Google it, it will do a better job explaining than what I could type here.
