Jahmyr Gibbs & David Montgomery, Saquon Barkley & Jalen Hurts, Derrick Henry & Lamar Jackson. They all have discovered that you can combat the short shelf-life of your runners and create a more dynamic offense by splitting the reps. This used to sort of exist with fullbacks and halfbacks, but the same principle has re-evolved.
I'd like to see a team draft, sign, or otherwise acquire two shutdown corners and see if they can bring back the Grits Blitz. The '77 Falcons could've outfoxed Don Coryell if they'd been able to cover those two wide receivers in Coryell's anti-blitzing scheme man-to-man.
Truth defenses are happy to give up 5 yards at a time to avoid the deep homerun plays. If defenses start stacking the line to stop the run will revert back to passing league
Don't let this resurgence fool you brothers. These big 3 running backs were all ultra talented players dragging their awful teams (raiders, giants, and titans) with them. Now they're on teams that complement them instead of force them to carry the team (packers, eagles, and ravens) so they don't get hurt as often and do better overall. With saquon especially, the giants scheme had him playing between the tackles more as a power back, instead of shifting him to the outside where he can make use of the open space. Running backs themselves aren't making a comeback, we're finally just seeing great ones get to play on good teams who don't force them into bad situations.
I think some of the best teams in the NFL traded for the best running backs which helps as well. Titans and giants wasted general talents for years. Gabe Davis making more than them is hilarious
i get why it wasnt discussed bc josh allen is playing out of his mind, but the bills rb room has been insanely fun to watch this year as a bills fan. we went from our RB1 being devin singletary in 2022 to the explosive 3 headed monster of james cook, ray davis, and ty johnson all being solid options to give the ball to. it's really improved the offense's consistency over the past year

DBs and defenders in general are worse at tackling now, and talented RBs are taking advantage.

No Kaleb Johnson from Iowa is a way better back and bigger. Jeanty has had one good year in a lack luster conference. Cowboys need that back for years and Kaleb is that back.

The league is cyclical when teams started emphasizing the passing game defenses had to adjust pass rush and linebackers that could drop in coverage were prioritized, speed came more important than size. Defensive front players got smaller and faster so Offenses are reverting to more run heavy schemes to take advantage of that fact

Rule changes, that need a more balanced offense, many defenses catching on to controlling WR's meant more opportunities for rushes. We have also seen some RB's become short field receivers, a dual threat. Barkley is also lucky so far as to injuries that hurt him and the Giants when with them.
If nothing else, the running back rookie contract should have some exceptions so a talented player can get paid before getting worn out. ie: hit 1500 yards in your first two years and you automatically can renegotiate for a new contract. The top RBs absolutely should be getting paid more than backup TEs or 3rd string WRs.
Watching Alexander Mattison and Ty Chandler struggle while Aaron Jones snd Cam Akers perform decently behind the same oline was enough for me to realize the dude in the backfield does matter. Jeanty to the vikes (plz bro)
It's a matter of the teams with these elite running backs having other options that teams are working to defend. Henry in Baltimore: Lamarr is the best dual threat ever and they're keeping safeties back to not get burnt by Flowers. Sequan in Philly: Hurts is a really good dual threat QB and defenses are keeping safeties back to not get burnt by Davonta and AJ Brown. Gibbs in Detroit: No exceedingly mobile QB here, but they're keeping the safeties back to not get burned by Williams and Amenra. Defenses should be happier about getting gashed for 7 yards per carry than giving up huge chunks in the passing game.
People forget that Henry had a light load for the first couple of years of his career as a back up to DeMarco Murray so more tread left on his immense tyres !

Defensive front players got smaller and faster so Offenses are reverting to more run heavy schemes to take advantage of that fact

Rule changes, that need a more balanced offense, many defenses catching on to controlling WR's meant more opportunities for rushes. We have also seen some RB's become short field receivers, a dual threat. Barkley is also lucky so far as to injuries that hurt him and the Giants when with them.

Thing is, nobody's giving an RB big money. It's good teams getting better on reasonable, cheap, or rookie contracts.

If nothing else, the running back rookie contract should have some exceptions so a talented player can get paid before getting worn out. ie: hit 1500 yards in your first two years and you automatically can renegotiate for a new contract. The top RBs absolutely should be getting paid more than backup TEs or 3rd string WRs.

It's a matter of the teams with these elite running backs having other options that teams are working to defend.
Henry in Baltimore: Lamarr is the best dual threat ever and they're keeping safeties back to not get burnt by Flowers.
Sequan in Philly: Hurts is a really good dual threat QB and defenses are keeping safeties back to not get burnt by Davonta and AJ Brown.
Gibbs in Detroit: No exceedingly mobile QB here, but they're keeping the safeties back to not get burned by Williams and Amenra.
Defenses should be happier about getting gashed for 7 yards per carry than giving up huge chunks in the passing game.
