    Ok, so I just wanted to explain something in case people are getting confused. Chandi is explaining the US/Canada and partially the UK weight systems. When she said that people are looking for a 2ply yarn, they may not be talking about the PLIES of a yarn (aka the strands it is made up of), they could be using the other system, that some people, like us Aussies use. So below is the conversion from US/Canada/UK to the Australian weight system; I believe some other countries use this as well. Americans also use a numbered yarn weight system (like medium 4 is a worsted weight) which is in brackets after the US/Canada/UK system.
    Lace - 2-3ply
    Fingering or sock (1) - 4ply
    Sport (2) - 5-6ply
    Dk (3) - 8ply
    Worsted/aran (4) - 10ply
    Bulky/chunky (5) - 12ply
    Super bulky/super chunky (6-7) - 14ply/16ply or larger
    Please keep in mind other people have different views on yarn weights, and what’s what, so I don’t know everything, this is just my personal experience and knowledge on this weight system. Again, to my knowledge, people in the UK mostly follow the American system with the exception of aran rather than worsted, until they get to a fingering weight yarn, then they follow the system above (so 4ply-2ply instead of fingering-lace). Hope this helps out anyone confused about our system here in Australia, trust me, it was very confusing when I started knitting and crocheting. :)

      Miss Bee Crochet thank you for explaining the Australian conversions, as I have had a lot of difficulty working out what type of yarn is what in translation.... I mostly use 8ply, so would need to be looking at Dk - and possibly sometimes worsted... 🙂

      Different weight yarn creates different size amigarumi. With a stretchier yarn you need to go with a smaller hook or needles because you don't want the stuffing coming out the holes between stitches so you want your fabric to be tight.

    In the UK the thicknesses are classified in a slightly different way. For instance, 4ply not only states the number of strands twisted together (4), but it also denotes the yarn weight. Then there is 3ply (3 strands) but is very light, like a lace weight. We don;t use the term Worsted weight, but I'm wondering if this is what we call Aran weight. In the UK we also use the term "chunky" rather than bulky. Throw in the differences in hook and needle sizes AND differences between UK and USA crochet terms, and it can all be really confusing! As a knitter of more than 50 years who switched to crochet a coupe of years ago, I agree with Chandi - don;t let the thickness (or thin-ness) of a yarn put you off. Try it. I'm about to start a project in Laceweight which I've never used before.

      It depends on the yarn. Something made of acrylic can generally be machine washed, and items made from Superwash Wool are generally safe to machine wash. For other natural fibers and luxury yarns, we always recommend hand-washing and laying the item flat to dry to extend its life.

    What does 8/4 yarn mean. What warp yarn is used for giant weaving projects, like rugs?

    • @ExpressionFiberArts
      @ExpressionFiberArts 5 лет назад +1

      The 8/4 means: These numbers tell you the weight , yardage, and number of strands in the yarn. - the top number (8) tells the industry standard size of the warp ( an 8 single has 6720 yards per pound) ( a 1/1 yarn has 840 yards per pound.) The larger the top number the finer the single strand yarn .-the bottom number tells how many strands are put together to make the warp - so this warp is a size 8 plied with 4 strands ( the 4 plys cuts the yardage to 1680 yards per pound) The larger the bottom number the more strands in the yarn. Sock yarn- some have nylon, some don't. How does that effect the longevity of socks? I've been told to not use 100% wool for socks because they will not hold up to wearing them as an everyday sock.

    • @ExpressionFiberArts
      @ExpressionFiberArts 6 лет назад

      Sometimes people blend in nylon to make the heels and toes last longer. However, it also depends on how the yarn in spun and the quality of the fiber. We chose to have our yarn spun very tightly with high quality yarn so it would last a long time. Hope this helps. : )

    So if a project calls for dk yarn, is okay to use worsted? I’m making a cardigan but I found cheap worsted yarn since I have to get a lot of it. Would it be too heavy or will it come out too big?

    • @ExpressionFiberArts
      @ExpressionFiberArts 4 года назад +1

      I would use the recommended yarn weight for the pattern. After seeing how it works up, then I would experiment with different yarn. If you use a different weight it could possibly throw off either the stitch count or the size of the project. I hope this helps. 🤗

    I would like to know how to determine how much yarn I need when buying it for different projects. Because the yarn weights vary I never know if for example it's fingering weight yarn, hire many yards I need compared to if I use a dk weight For the same project.

      Check this video out...ruclips.net/video/AI-NV62zZws/видео.html But it's usually best not to substitute yarn weights, because it can affect your weight and gauge.

    • @ExpressionFiberArts
      @ExpressionFiberArts 6 лет назад

      You can, but watch out for the single ply yarn because it can break. Since your warp has to be very strong, I would use a yarn with multiple plies. ❤️

The 2 yarns shown were Pearlescent Worsted (www.expressionfiberarts.com/products/frozen-heather-pearlescent-worsted.html) and Luster Worsted (www.expressionfiberarts.com/products/a-passion-for-purple-luster-worsted.html).

    What is the difference between worsted and aran? some places is the same...and others is different.

    • @ExpressionFiberArts
      @ExpressionFiberArts 4 года назад

      In the US Aran is a slightly heavier "weight" than worsted. We sometimes call it a heavy worsted weight yarn. Although this website puts them in the same category. www.craftyarncouncil.com/standards/yarn-weight-system

    How do you figure out what size needle to use? If you double the yarn, do you need bigger needles? Does doubling the yarn impact the amount of yarn you need to make a certain size blanket?

    • @ExpressionFiberArts
      @ExpressionFiberArts 5 лет назад

      Hi, Mary! Sure. Needle size depends on project and yarn. I'd start by finding a pattern you love and seeing what they use and going from there. Yes, if you double the yarn, you need bigger needles. Yes, doubling the yarn will probably mean you'll need double the yardage. I hope this helps!

    • @ExpressionFiberArts
      @ExpressionFiberArts 2 года назад

      You'll want a yarn with multiple plies (3 or more) and a good, tight twist. These types of yarn will stand up to repeated wear. Our Enduring Worsted is a good example of this type of yarn: www.expressionfiberarts.com/categories/worsted/enduring-worsted.html
