What is Rider Synergy? The Orbea Rise eMTB Light | Dissected

- The 2021 Orbea Rise is a standout bike in the eBike Light category in every way and here’s a few reasons why. The top-of-the-line Rise weighs in at just 36.3lbs, Orbea worked with Shimano to create a custom-tuned Shimano EP8 RS drive unit that delivers a maximum 60Nm of torque, and a combination of internal and external batteries give you the ability to quickly choose a lightweight bike or a mile-crunching performance eMTB. Compared to other notable bikes, like Specialized’s SL Levo and Kenevo, the Rise’s max power is nearly double in Boost mode, and definitely perceivable out on the trail.
RS PHILOSOPHY AND THE EP8
Orbea developed their Rider Synergy (RS) philosophy in conjunction with the new Shimano EP8 motor. By working closely with Shimano, Orbea capitalized on a unique opportunity to have early access and build the new frame around the motor giving it the ultra-sleek look that we see today. The goal was to create a ride that was more “Bike” and less “E,” yet Orbea still managed to get an impressive amount of power and range. Shimano’s new EP8 system offers rider two power profiles that work seamlessly with Orbea’s RS firmware. While the two preset profiles are tuned to offer what Orbea thinks are great settings for more riders, the easy-to-use Shimano E-Tube mobile app allows owners to quickly slide the scale and characteristics of the motor. Some features of the EP8 RS are unique, but others carry over from Shimano’s full power EP8 system. For example, the EP8 RS motor on the Orbea Rise is tuned to perform best at 75 - 95 RPMs, like its full-powered EP8 siblings. This higher cadence is natural, comfortable and allows you to get full power when you are really pushing it on big climbs. When riding in Eco or Trail mode, the Rise is definitely a lower powered eMTB and gives the rider a less-assisted feel compared to full-power eBikes. It is on par with SL offerings from Specialized, until you kick the bike into Boost for hot laps or super steep climbs, at which time it will pull away from Specialized SL bikes rather quickly.
Range on the Orbea Rise comes from an internal 360wh battery developed in conjunction with Panasonic. This battery can provide up to 3,900’ or 1,200 meters of climbing when in Boost. If that is not enough you can drop their 252wh range extender in your bottle cage and get an additional 2,600’ or 800 meters of climbing. And that is in Boost mode! If you want even more time on saddle, you can drop down to Trail mode and squeeze out even more elevation, a whopping 2,900 meters or 9,500 feet with that range extender. Needless to say, it’s hard to want more!
BUILDS AND GEO
Starting at $6,999 for the Rise M20 and going all the way up to $10,999 for the Rise M-LTD, Orbea’s options cover a wide variety of budgets and riding styles. Our Rise test bike comes with a 150mm Fox Float Factory 36 with the Grip2 Damper and 140mm of rear travel managed by a Fox Float DPX2 Factory Shock with a 3-position compression lever. This build is their more aggressive kit designed to maximize what the Rise’s frame is fully capable of. If you do not have terrain that requires a 150mm fork or prefer a lighter, more XC-oriented ride, the other models feature a 140mm Fox Float Factory 34 and Fox DPS Factory shock.
We’d like to extend a big thanks to Parker and the team at Orbea Bicycles for taking some time to not only get us a bike but meet up and film this video and get us some really good info to digest while we begin our long-term test of the Rise. In our first few weeks of having this bike our testers have quickly grown to love it and we cannot wait to see how it holds up after a lot more rides and time on the trails. Until then, it is safe to say that if you are in the market for an eBike Light, the Orbea Rise might just be at the top of our list right now as it offers a fun and playful ride, packs a lot of power into a small package and has enough range to crush miles.

got 6 months on my rise m10 now. love it! ride minimum 2x per week, every week and so far, not a single problem! game changer for me on those days where you don't have the motivation to pedal an analogue bike!
got my first race in the ebike category this weekend, and i'm hoping the extra mobility and nimbleness of the rise can help me against the full power bikes!
I've been on a Rise for the past month. I absolutely love it. A game-changer for me. I've come off a couple of surgeries and the Rise has been key at getting me back out on the trails. I climb for the downs (North Shore low-blacks primarily) and this bike handles them really well.
One word of caution for Rise owners.... the e*Thirteen carbon cranks that come stock with some of them have a known issue with the spindle screw caps coming loose. One of mine fell off on a down hill run and my entire crank fell off 20m into the following climb. e*Thirteen sent me a couple replacement screws (with lock tight) a week later. So if you have those cranks, check the spindle screw caps (or better yet, take them off and apply some lock tight).
I replaced mine with Shimano cranks and I'm using a Wolftooth 32T chainring.
Unbelievable for a £7000 bike ! Bad quality control
I am so excited to get mine, ordered in dec and it was due to be delievered in april. Hope it gets here soon, the summer is short where i live.
Got mine last week; totally satisfied, such a great Machine! I changed the Rotors to 203mm (no Clue why they put on these 180“s because the Weight Save is ridiculous!); maybe changing the Back Tire; and that little „Dongle“ replacing the Display is Nonsense, difficult to read whilst riding an very inaccurate working with 3 LED Mini Lamps; what a Fuzz! Will get Shimanos b/w mini Display Soon.
Alltogether a brillant Bike, great Performer plus stunning Looks; i bought the M-Team in Size M and had 17.9 Kilos on the Scale including Pedals which is amazing.
Love my Rise!
@@robmccall5017 Stoked to hear you like it so far and agree with you on some of the upgrades you made!
@@ilidiofaria ordered in November. But it is an exclusive Orbea Dealer in München.
@@ilidiofaria yes but what to do? Too bad, hope You will get i soon!!
Phenomenal Review/Info- I just bought a Rise M10 too!
Awesome to hear and thank you. Congrats on the new bike. enjoy
I own a levo sl expert love the bike hate the lack of power from motor. Would you say the rise power is in-between say my levo and levo sl, or closer to sl? I'm thinking of selling my expert sl and buying a hydra rise with 540 battery. Is it worth doing taking a loss on my sl?
Just received My H30. Doesn’t fit me as well as the carbon 15 model did with the H30 dropper being too high and the bars needing to be tilted forward. But otherwise all good in XL at 6,3” in shoes.
With Fibromyalia and after a recent busted ankle this got me off the sofa.
I like that Orbea only quote rider weight limit not a system limit. And that limit is 130kg. Poppy lightweight feel to the bike. Good ergonomics and I get a better work out than the tank full power models without it setting off my Fynromyalgia too much.
Go rise 👍
Ps, don’t connect your Bluetooth in phone settings. lol 😝
Do it through the apps. I found profile 2 already on max 60nm for boost mode so didn’t need the e tube app anyway really
Great video thanks but sound was bad on my TV
Best bike ever !
This is the first eMTB that doesn’t LOOK like an e-bike. Amazing!
I would argue that the Levo SL was the first eMTB that really doesn't look like an ebike, but this one is super slick too!
@@rstrakovsky the Rise looks even less like an ebike, the area around the motor is an inch smaller than the SL (at the highest spot)
@@rstrakovsky plus double the Torque!
Can I ask how the little sag tool actually works ...cheers ..ps fantastic bike
Great video and discussion! Can I ask what pants you are wearing mr Wolf?
Nice video!
Thanks
@@TheLoamWolf do you need cell phone service to access the app and make adjustments??

I want the team edition bad.
I got pretty decent on my hardtail and I wanted a full suspension so why not a lighter weight mtb? I'll be able to ride much more, and rougher stuff. I wanna wait for a rise to become available but it's so hard
It's a pretty sweet rig.
Do you know the size of the rider? I'm about to buy one and I'm stuck between med/lg.
THANKS!!
We’re all between 5’11 and 6’1. Cole in this video is 6’1.

I did notice his seat was very high.
I’m 6,3 in trainers and have an XL rise. Ergonomics varies between model components as the test ride carbon 15 fitted spot on. My H30 I need the bars tilted forward as these have no rise and the seat dropper is longer so can’t jut pop the seat up to max like on the 15 and have it perfect like on the carbon 15.
The carbon is lighter still but smaller battery. Presume due to carbon internal frame space available? If I have that right?
when are you folks gonna convince orbea and every other e-mtb company into selling their e-mtb's as a frame only. I really like the orbea rise because it's got light weight but doesn't sacrifice torque nearly as much as the levo/kenevo SL. However looking at the spec's of each configuration of the bike, i'd change out practically everything. Handlebars, stem, grips, brakes, rotors, fork, shock. I'd even prefer a different drivetrain. Not really worth getting the whole bike.
And why they don’t do two different linkages one for comfy/trail riding other for enduro/coil? Spacers are for fine tune not to fix.
We'd like to see a frame/crank option as well. But we'll start pressing brands a bit more and see what we can out of them.
@@TheLoamWolf thats right, and it will better for they maybe dont need to do two differents frames, thats huge save for both. Flip chips so can adjust geometry and chainstay lenght, two different links ... why two or three different bikes models?Expensive for they and for us!
Same here
I wish the carbon frame had a bigger battery
Your write up on the Rise with extender can get 9k’. My heavier Spectral bigger battery I’m lucky to get 5k’ on steep terrain. How is that range you mention calculated? What terrain? I think you even said in Boost. Find this HIGHLY impossible 🤷🏻♂️
So sad it s so expensive...
And compared to a forestal it has less suspension and more weight
🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸
I have these bike for test and in boost 800 meters and 16 kilómeter no more......and eco is the same normal bike
So what do you get with this bike vs a normal bike vs a full e-bike other than its lighter weight than a fell e-bike
I think, the light ebikes tends to make normal bike speed en eco but without effort, do you ?
Con extender o sin el?

Add note , the Rise is truly amazing at climbing I will say that 👍🏾in boost mode it climbs just as good as the Orbea Wild because it’s so light but downhill it’s not great but I haven’t actually had the suspension properly set up yet because it rides like a pogo stick, super bouncy and unstable 😣
I’ve had mine a week now , ridden it 3 times and so far I’m not really liking it ,especially downhill it’s not very stable at high speeds, I had the Wild fs before and it’s much better, time to say goodbye to the Rise , very disappointing to be honest 😢
