    Ever see the pressure boosting shower heads on Amazon with the 'fan' or 'pump' in the head that apparently increases the pressure? I've always wondered if they work, and in today's Plumberparts video we test the claims! Do they increase pressure? Does the turbo fan do anything? Do they filter? We test on a gravity fed shower and on a pressurised system. You may know these as pressure boosting shower heads with fan, turbo fan shower heads, a hydro jet shower head, a high pressure shower head, a propeller driven shower head and many other names! Enjoy!

    We used to have a Trevi boost shower but the "turbo" (or how ever it worked) was inside the mixer fitting on the wall where the cold pressure would help boost the weaker hot feed. It actually worked quite well. Claiming the turbo will boost pressure in the shower head breaks Newton's law thermodynamics.

    • @gruhwch4876
      @gruhwch4876 Год назад +4

      The Trevi used a venturi to pull gravity hot water behind a mains cold supply.
      As the venturi relies on precision orifices it quickly degrades in a hard water application as limescale takes effect.

    Reminds me of those "smart" handles that borrow power from the water pressure to give you a temperature reading. Except the ones they put for sale in Lidl required 4-5 bar of pressure (!?) and significant flowrate, and even then the display was so dim. And the internal "turbine" was so poorly made it just suffocated a normal healthy shower to be completely unusable. It's easily possible, if it's done right..

Not sure about more pressure but the pressure is great, and perhaps its the movement of the spray but rinses shampoo out of your hair in a few seconds. And while the filter doesn't look like much, the kicker for me was a rash I have had for 3 years is gone. Used the shower for about 2 weeks and realized I wasn't itching any more. By restricting the openings you increase flow but pressure remains the same. The water coming out of the tiny holes is coming out faster (flowing) but the pressure still depends totally on the height of the water in the tank. Water flows out due to gravity and the pressure is roughly half a pound per square inch for each foot the water level is at. This does not change if you reduce the size of the outlet. Simple hydraulics. Ask any firefighter.

    • @VoluntaristSociety
      @VoluntaristSociety Год назад +2

      If your house is not supplied by an infinitely large pipe, then the size of the nozzle certainly affects the pressure.

    • @SplinterVoid
      @SplinterVoid Год назад

      @@VoluntaristSociety Yep outlet pressure. Changing the size of the holes adjusts the coefficient "K" in P = (Q/K)^2 , decreasing hole size decreases "K" which is in denominator and therefore results in a larger pressure "P" with the same flow "Q". It's theoretically correct I believe but has its limitations... seems they're taking full advantage of pressure/flow relationships.

    First thing first, the pressure in the closed system is "always" the same unless you install the additional pump or compressor
    Second thing, by reducing the pipe size (bigger/smaller) the pressure is always the same, only thing you change is the FLOW
    Let me explain: The formula for calculating the flow is this " Q = A * v "
    - Q = a liquid flow rate and it is measured in m3/s or l/s (cubic meters per second or Liters per second)
    - A = Area of the pipe or channel in m2 (meters squared)
    - v = velocity of the liquid m/s (meters per second)
    So, in this formula, there is no value for Pressure (P) because pressure is the same.
    Only way to increase the pressure in the system is by adding additional pump/compressor/turbo pump/high pressure pump etc.... either in the facility where you getting water from of second way is to raise the water tower on higher level (not much difference in small elevation changes)
    So, the best way even for the water tower facilities to increase pressure inside system is to add more PUMPS
    You can increase pressure in your house by doing same thing, just make an reservoir/tank (supporting desired pressure) and add the pump taking water from the city network (much more cost wise if you consider burning electricity for the pump or gasoline).
    Anyway, regarding that shower head, it's nothing more than Scam product released to take the cash from stupid people :D
    Great video and keep up the great work

    The easiest way to maximise pressure is just to stick your thumb over the end of the shower hose. You won't like the flow rate but the pressure will be as good as you can get without a pump. All a shower head can do is trade off pressure vs flow rate.

    So I have a question. I have a 50gal hot water heater that doesn’t allow more then a 15min shower it is completely brand new as of two weeks ago. Because we thought it was going out, but now with a new one and the same 15 issue I’m questioning it. But the house came with a shower head that had little to no pressure, so I bought a cheap shower head and it has a ton of pressure but the hot water still doesn’t last. So my question is is the high flow of the new shower head the issue?

    • @psi10001
      @psi10001 2 года назад +1

      Water suppliers’ statutory service standard level of mains water pressure is 10 metres/head (or one bar). This means there is enough force/pressure to push the water to a height of 10m.
      This is measured at the point where the water leaves the water suppliers pipework and enters yours (usually the outside stop valve or property boundary).
      As a guide, if you have a suitable single service pipe, the first tap in the home (this is usually the kitchen tap) should be able to fill a 4.5 litre (one gallon) bucket in 30 seconds, with all other taps and appliances turned off. Another way of putting it is enough water pressure to fill a cold water storage cistern in a two storey house roofspace.

    For clarity, I don't believe the shower head shown does this...
    It is technically possible to use a large amount of low pressure flow to pressurise a smaller amount of higher pressure flow. You'd need to design part of the system as a turbine and part as a compressor. That way some of the water flowing through the head would lose energy (pressure) going through the head and some would gain energy.

    THANKS!!! I live in a rented property where the only running hot water is from the immersion tank in a cupboard on the landing. The immersion (judging by the popping and banging) is caked in limescale and the pipes are probably coated in it too. So when I rigged up the mickey mouse push-on-to-the-taps shower attachment I bought, I get a piddling little dribble coming out of the shower head - at chest height. Put the shower head up to head height (I'm only 5'1") and it virtually dries up completely! Having just seen an advert for these things I thought this would be a game changer, but the skeptic in me wasn't convinced. I thought judging from the shape of it there were batteries inside adding to the water pressure.
    Thank goodness I watched your video! Okay this piece of ......"plastic" is only cheap. But do I really want to pay people for making false promises and selling junk products that don't work to people??? NO. Love your videos. When I moved into my 8yr old 3 storey, the shower on the middle and top floor just dribbled out. (Second floor much worse than the top floor) the boiler is also on the top floor in a bedroom next to the bathroom. I purchased a head that looks like that but not a turbo one, it has these ball things inside (I didn’t get it for the mineral effect, just desperate for extra water pressure from the shower head. It honestly has helped but like the design on that one water stays in the handle which has worried me…… I’m not imagining it, it genuinely comes out stronger, especially on the shower on the top floor. are the ball ones different in design? Are these heads I should look at not using and replacing? Thank you for how you explain things like the pipe sizes etc to help it make sense to people like me who know nothing about this kind of stuff!

      It's just that your new shower head has smaller holes across less area. This increases the pressure as the water doesn't spread out inside the shower head as much

    • @dimitar4y
      @dimitar4y 2 года назад +2

      It's basic physics. The balls don't help. What does help is smaller orifice (holes).
      The physics go as follows. The pump that gives you the water to your home generates FLOW. when that flow is met with resistance i.e. smaller holes, the PRESSURE goes up at EXPENSE of the FLOW. You can make this basic experiment at home. Go to your kitchen. Turn on the tap. Put your finger on the nozzle. The more you squeeze your finger on it, the more violently it squirts out but at significantly smaller amounts. They do the same thing. It's not the balls. It's the smaller holes on the spray head. Just get the "balls" out of it they're just a mold hazard.

    I can't believe that anybody ever falls for these scams. Of all the benefits of the internet, this is a great example of the downside.... the total abuse of trading and advertising standards to part people from their money....... I've had customers ask me to install these, and when it doesn't work they bitch on me that I installed it wrong. Ok mr and ms certified plumbers, don't call my number again. Knobheads.

    Pressure is energy. Without adding any additional energy from somewhere else, it violates the laws of physics for this to somehow be able to increase water pressure. In fact, the laws of physics mean that by using some of the pressure to spin the fan, this showerhead actually must decrease pressure (albeit by a minuscule amount since the little fan clearly takes very little energy to spin).

    • @IAintScaredOfNoGhost
      @IAintScaredOfNoGhost Год назад

      To be pedantic, I think you're technically forgetting about modifying resistance. You can increase pressure by converting flow using resistance (think water hammer). Increasing flow AND pressure however? Laws of thermodynamics definitely apply.

    My wife ordered one off TikTok. It doesn't have the filter, but an additional Archimedes screw in the handle - because *obviously* it makes it super powerful.. We have an electric shower. I always put the old head back on. And the first time someone accidentally presses the stop buttin and blows the thermal cut off, the bloody thing is going in the bin!
    She only paid 99p.

    look like they make it to go around shower head unsettle of hitting head to nozzles so that water will go around n come out of nozzles without putting so much stress on pipe (like hammer which u can learn it by turn on water so fast n watch pipe pull n push around) so it just fly thur shower head n it good have more tiny hole because it make flow line longer (never use any shower head because i normal run straight water reduce flow that all n just like living in junk yard)

    Fitted a new Mira Jump 10.8Kw ....same day the customer changed the head for one of these - killed the shower within a week. Didn't blow the PRV but the fact that you can TURN IT OFF !! at the head while the shower unit is still turned on made it overheat and die. Expensive mistake
