Apart from witnessing Hannu at full chat through many forest stages, my abiding memory of the man comes from the 1986 Welsh International rally when I stood at the stage start in Hafren forest and the news had come through about Henri Toivenen's death in Corsica. It obviously affected Hannu deeply, as he stood by the car and talked with Arne Hertz the emotion was there for all to see. He went on to win the event in the legendary Quattro but his humanity showed that here was a true legend, a gentleman. The world has lost a true great.
I am ashamed of how little I knew of him outside his last name and his Quattro. Learned a lot from DirtFish about him and I'm grateful they took the time. Thanks for sharing memories of this Legendary Gentleman.
Well done on a lovely tribute to a great man and rally driver. I met him briefly on the Scottish where I was helping as a volunteer, as I walked passed him and a group of others I tripped and fell, (looking at them not where I was going) he was the only one who moved to help me up. This concern for others was evident throughout his life.
HANNU MIKKOLA ; MOTORSPORT CAR RALLY LEGEND PASSES AWAY : TRULY A LEGEND . I WAS INSPIRED BY HIM IN MY EARLY DAYS OF STARTING MOTORSPORTS & PARTICIPATING AS A CAR RALLY DRIVER FOR 12 YEARS IN VARIOUS MOTORSPORTING EVENTS IN INDIA . RIP 💐 VIKASH CHUDIWALA FROM MUMBAI , INDIA
A complete legend, from the era of so many top class drivers, so pleased i had the chance to talk to him on a number of occasions, he was not just a fantastic driver, a true gentleman as well R.I.P Hannu, you will be missed
It was a pleasure to watch him Driving on the RAC Rally. I marshalled on that Rally for 21 years (1997-2000) He is and will always be a Legend of Rally. RIP Hannu and thank you. Martin. (Thailand)
Me and my wife we were at Goodwood a few years ago, and Hannu was there. He just got out the car and came up to us, and signed something for my wife. Someone nearby said "I have just seen someone rolling down Goodwood Hill in a rally car!" and Hannu just turned around to them like "That was me!" No emotions, just straight. My wife she had to laugh, but he didn't mind. He was really a gentleman and we will miss you Hannu rest in peace!
My memories of Hannu must be in the forests of Wales with the Escorts during the mid to late 70s. He was a true genius behind the wheel, which I am pleased to say I witnessed many times. RIP Hannu Mikkola World champion 🏆 A nice tribute thanks for sharing
It's interesting that he worked closely on developing, testing and driving the Quattro for years and years beginning from late 70's and got many wins with it, but when he was asked decades later what was his favorite era of his long career, the answer was simply that dancing with the rear-wheel drive Escort was pure enjoyment and greater than anything else. So it truly sounds like what you witnessed was the golden era for both of you!
He was the first rally driver that I was aware of, and possibly the first driver I ever saw in competition as my first event as a spectator was the 1983 RAC Rally and I think he was first car through. Tremendous driver and definitely a legend. RIP.
Ruhe in Frieden. Rest in Peace. Thanks you for everything. A Legend is gone but will live in our heart until we will die. We lost a man in our rallyfamily. What Nikki Lauda was for F1, that is Mikkola for rallying. I am so sorry for the wife and his family. Much strenght for your future. Good bye Mister Audi Good bye my Hero of my childhood. Never met you Never talked to you. But you inspired me. Give 100% Stay early to bed Stay FOCUS Enjoy what.you do But do it as a Gentleman. I did my hero. I do. Thank you overall 😪😪😪
One of my memories was Hannu with the iconic Eaton Yale Escort RS1800 on the RAC but that was before I was lucky enough to watch Hannu several times in the 80's on the RAC amazing driver especially his Quattro years - RIP Hannu a true gentleman
For me, He was simply the greatest Rally driver of all time, others may have won more titles but he was a class act all round, so many huge names around on the scene in his career and he stands above them all for me. Rip Hannu, king of the Lombard Rac.
Shocked to hear of the passing of one of my favourite rally drivers. ,Hannu was a true legend, a gentleman and somebody that i admired. Met him at the 1983 RAC when i was at Windermere just to wish him and Arne good luck. My heart goes out to his family, he will be sadly missed, R.I.P. Hannu..
Hannu Riposa in Pace Finnico Volante 🙏🌹🇫🇮 Tifavo Lancia ma ti ho sempre ammirato... sei stato un Immenso Campione con te perdiamo un altro pezzo della Storia dei Rally, quelli veri... Salutami Henry & Sergio
My two favourite rally drivers...... Both greats. Adieu to the real Flying Finn, and such fond memories from Michéle Mouton, both were class acts in the monster that was the Audi Quattro, golden years they were
Hannu made my childhood exciting. Watching all those great events and then now hearing that he was a model competitor on top of that. Class act. May the soil lay lightly upon him.
RIP Hannu. A gent and rallying giant. We had a few chuckles over the years of Safari interviews in the eighties. If you can, read Safari Fever by Nick Brittan, of his record-breaking 1972 Safari Rally victory.
I’m old enough to have seen him in Africa during the Bandana Rallye in Ivory Coast with the Mercedes 500.... Two drivers, Mikkola and Waldegard.... 2 masters. Mikkola was the fastest of them, king of improvisation. Later I saw him in Monte Carlo in St Bonnet le Froid with the Audi Quattro S1. The Gentleman and the Beast! RIP Champion!!!!
He put the Escort and Quattro at the front of the pack! His racing was absolutely incredible. One of the best of all time!! My favorite was the Escort, RWD mud slinger! Beautiful car great driver!!!
I did tech in the Olympus in 1985. I don't remember if Hannu was there, but it was the best days of FIA pro Rally, and that was because of Drivers such as Hannu.
I marshalled.on the Lombard RAC rally in the Late 1970s ,this guy was very much at the top of his profession ,in the RS1800 Escort . Then later in the early 1980s with Audi . RIP the Great One .
Hannu Mikkola is gone from us a very hard lost we will never forget you one of the very best I am very sorry for his family Thank you very much Hannu Mikkola for all you have done for this sport
A rally legend becomes a rally God. My ❤ goes out to family and friends. Race in peace, Hannu.

Truly lucky.
I wish i was born in the 70s but now were living an era of rallying that will be history in 2060 so we gotta be happy too.
Yes, I count myself as fortunate to witness his talent in both Escorts and then Audis. Exceptional talent, & a true gentleman. Sad loss.
Beautiful tribute to a true legend. Well said Michelle and Malcolm you just encapsulated it all. R.I.P. Hannu.
