I might get a USP in 9mm because I like the idea of having an overbuilt gun chambered in a caliber that’s going to have a difficult time wearing it out.

@@a1phamalestud No 9mm +p+ has about 42,000psi while 40 S&W has only 35,000psi. The Bundeswehr German army shot their USP in 9mm for years with very hot overpressure loads that where designed for the HK MP5. It leads to slide cracks. After that they switched to normal NATO loads which is like strong +p. I have never heard of a USP 40S&W with such problems.

On my personal experience,Among 40 S&W,H.K USP 40 is best!
Sig and Glock couldn't follow Two Shot in Single Hole at 7 yard.(Around Penny Size.)
After this,I was disappointed of others.-After this H.K became my first choice.
It is handy, durable, laborship, design, weight with Variant 3 Version.-I didn't need any hesitation of H.K.

I just traded a Sig P229 for one of these, both in .40, and couldn't be happier. The USP 40 feels like it's all business, made for duty. It lends a sense of confidence that few other pistols are able to. Built for combat.
    Thanks sootch. Another outstanding review!

Nice review; always appreciate the accuracy and quality of the information you provide. The H&K USP 45 one of the most accurate, comfortable, fun and overall best 45s I have ever owned. I do wish they had compatible mags (like Glock) between different sizes of guns in the same caliber. FYI, a company GG&G, Inc makes a rail converting the proprietary rail to a standard pictinny so you will be able to use accessories like a Glock flashlight and laser attachment (highly recommended). Good luck.

A couple of things to note:
    >-It was designed to fire +P rounds. It still excels at this.
likewise, the Mark23 was designed to fire a special 180gr +P round, which is why the 1911 wasn't suited for the task. 1911's would just blow apart after a very short time of firing such rounds.
    >-Unlike any other pistol any other manufactured at the time of its trials, the USP faced an occlusion test, where not only was one bullet lodged in the barrel, but TWO bullets were lodged in the barrel, then a third fired from normal round, dislodging both blockages, and discharging all three projectiles without incident. Afterward, the barrel was checked with x-rays and microscopes for any damage or flaws that might have occurred as a result of such a test, and none were found. The same barrel suffered no loss in accuracy and was then tested with another several thousand rounds without any reduction in performance of any kind. No other pistol, not even the Mark23 faced that test, to my knowledge.
The USP, when loaded with Corbon 135gr JHP rounds is arguably one of the most effective and formidable pistols ever created.
An interesting characteristic of the variant 1, and it left-handed counterpart, the trigger when in double action it a long, smooth pull with no stop just a sudden break. However, in single action mode, it acts kind of like a 2-stage where the initial travel is of mild resistance, which then stops at a positive break point, giving the user a very clear and crisp break. Personally, I prefer a lighter pull than stock, so I pulled the hammer spring out, and cut about 1.5-1.75 coils off of it then placed it back in the handle, significantly reducing the trigger weight, without compromising and of the striking ability. Makes it that much nicer to use.

I have fired 350 rounds so far and I do enjoy the quality of this pistol. There is something about having a "top notch pistol." Yes, it was pricey ($875) (with two 10 rnd. mags. This gun being designed in 40 Cal can be shot all day long, its a great shooter and such a hi tech gun with the recoil system and the lightweight mags. Double to single action is actually prefered by a lot of more expierienced shooters. I've been shooting for 15 years now and have switched to double to single action guns. It's actually better then a striker or single action only, double action on the first shot is better then having to hit a safty and single action for over 90% of your shots is better then a stryker for 100% of your shots. The first double action shot isnt bad, its actually nice while you line up your sights and then single action feels like the gun can do no wrong. Get out and shoot and this will make more sense but maybe not if your new and havnt shot revolvers and other guns.

Also, info about dry firing the USP SPECIFICALLY!!!
The early model guns are NOT dry fire safe. The firing pin is fairly weak where the firing pin block safety engages the firing pin. It will eventually snap the firing pin.
You can update your USP a new firing pin block, firing pin block spring, and firing pin. It will then be dry fire safe! Of course, you can just use snap caps if you'd rather. Do not mess with the trigger on these guns, buy the match trigger kit, it's easy to install.

If you're looking to get your own, you could just get a single/double action variant. Variants 5, 6, and 7 are DAO. The first variation (in this vid) is probably what you're looking for. Variant 2 features left handed safety with all the features the USP in this vid has. Keep in mind the law enforcement variant is basically a variant 7 with an improved mechanism and as such is also DAO.

My brother who was in Iraq loved his USP. Being in supply and all he coud get one. When he was forced to get the 9mm because he could not get the 40 do to shortages. He liked the power behind it and the fact it took less shots to put a target down. But when he used the 9mm he instantly hated it. Mainly because it was a weaker bullet than the 40 My dad also was a career military and had a 1911. When he was forced to swap to the 9mm he too hated that pistol. But he had serious malfuntions with his

I got my USP .45 Compact in 2001. It's my home defense firearm. My only issues with it is: (1) it will give you a failure to eject if you use cheap ammo; and (2) if you tilt the pistol at an angle when you insert the magazine, and use anything more than slight force, the slide will close, loading the pistol. I contacted USP about it and also asked for a replacement manual---they never bothered to respond. If you don't use cheap ammo, it's a great pistol.

I had one in .40 and I hated it mainly bc I hate the snap of that round but I bought another in .45 acp and I loved that gun. Really regret selling it

I'm babysitting an H&K USP 45 for a buddy while he's out of the country for a year. MAN, I love that gun... just wish I had more time to get out and shoot it.

They are amazingly accurate. From 10 yds you can trace the perf lines on an IDPA target.

I Got a USP40 brand new last year, love it, only issue I found is kydex holsters will wear the finish off anything, Glocks and USP, no big deal just passing the info around if you want your Badass pistol to stay Pretty, no kydex.

Honestly, I'm not sure whether I'm a fan of the very loud "click!" you get when the trigger resets into single-action mode. What's your opinion, sootch?

If 40 cal is your choice this is your pistol. I never get tired of hearing the angels sing when mine slides out of the holster. And if you want to be shocked at how easy 100 yard shots can be with the pistol put some Dawson Precision sights on it.

USPc 40 & P7m13are my edcs. The no- lead guideline is really specific to the P7, so as to not jack up the gas system. I only shoot jacketed ammo as a rule to make cleaning up easier. Thanks for the video.

My local shop has one for $600 but its pretty well used. In fact I think it might have been used in BUDS training lol. But is that a good deal or too much?

$600 is a very good deal, I'd say. The retail is like $800 or so.

I just saw these posts. Mac Andrews and Caleb Pettet I actually have one "lol" and, it's not an aftermarket barrel...funny thing is, it's an actual HK USP with a slide that's stamped .357sig...that's how a silly guy like me would know what it was. Kasakee2 you know what's up...
