- This past weekend I wandered into Maple Street Guitars and stumbled across my first real vintage guitar, a 1965 Gibson SG Jr. This guitar is a ringer and has a great story.

Can't go wrong with that👍🏻
I think we need to get you all together
I love you man
👍👍👍
Mr Vintage himself 😂
Fuck yeah
Great video, Rhett! I had a lot of fun documenting this fantastic SG Jr. with you. I feel both fortunate and honored to have been part of this guitar's history; and, I'm grateful that it will rock on in the hands of a great player, who will respect it and love it as much as I did. May it serve you well! - Lindsay *Reposted since we did this previously from the wrong RUclips account :(
This is only the beginning. As someone who purchased their first vintage guitar a few years back ('60 ES-330) I have since purchased 4 other vintage guitars and spent more money than I ever thought I would on an instrument... Once you open that door it raises the bar and makes it difficult to not want more.
Raising the bar is the problem. I get an acceptable price range in my head even though it’s absurd
And that is why I buy reasonably priced ones . My 68 strat is in someone's house but not mine ... damn
A few weeks ago, I got my hands on an 80s Kramer Focus, definitely needs work though lmao
I started collecting action figures last year. First it was just a few hundred bucks, but quickky got up to many thousands. I had fun buying them, but kind wish I had bought a couple great guitars instead. At least I finally got new pickups for my Les Paul that had a half-dead treble pickup. (498T, now Pearly Gates.)
@@watersnortmoment3734 if its an early mid 80s, DAMM GOOD GUITARS!! i hv an 83 2000 model. these are some of the first flyods that shipped.
Had the privilege of meeting Rhett that day at Maple Street but had to leave before the concert broke out! Absolutely amazing tone on that SG. Folks, if you haven’t had the opportunity to visit Maple Street you’re missing out on great people and great guitars. Looking forward to the second part, Rhett.
I have my late Grandpa’s 1960 Gretsch 6124 Anniversary guitar, and his Fender 1968 Super Reverb. Those are my passed down vintage instruments. They have a certain mojo.
Nice combo, cherish it!
I have my father in laws 68 super reverb
Nice!
Bought my new tele from Maple Street. I live in CA, but it’s my favorite guitar store.
That's a killer axe, Rhett! I'm not a "vintage or bust!" person, but great tone is great tone...and that thing knocks it out of the park!
There are less than a handful of guitar shops in the southeast that you should visit. Maple Street is definitely on that list.
Well done, Rhett. Not a lot of over-produced drama. Just solid interesting content. Like all your vids! Looking forward to the sequel.
So glad to see you at maple street. My favorite guitar store of all time and the guys there are the chillest ever!!!
Congratulations Rhett! You'll love this guitar for many years and won't want to part with it. I have a 50 year-old vintage LP that I bought brand new. It's like an old friend. After all these years it has so much sentimental value that I could never let it go. Enjoy your new baby!
I bought a National tricone resophonic in that store in 2009, it got it online during a visit to a friend in the States. Great deal. Great store.
Maple Street just has an amazing vibe as a store, and Hopper's adorable. I probably spent more time playing with the pupper than anything else since as a bass player I was primarily there to support the GAS of my two guitar playing buddies.
Much love to Maple Street, went there quite a few times when I lived in the Atlanta. Lindsey is the best!
Dude that SG is the shit...I'm drooling right now...tone is monstrous..I own a 2020 standard and it's unbelievable
I also have a 2020 SG standard and do love it. A few minor issues in build quality, not super deal breaking but for 2k you'd expect more. The pickups are a pretty hot and I might swap them out for some lower output ones, but it plays so well and does feel great. Two of the dots are a bit smudgy, the lining up of the fingerboard and the neck separates a tiny but noticeable amount from fret 3-1. Very rarely is you thumb wrapped around back there but it's still a noticeable finishing flaw. The picture that came with also showed a dirty workstation and wasn't the greatest photo. Gibson are clearly cranking these things out, and while I do love my SG I know they can do better. I will say I went in and picked the one that stood out to me on the wall and when I plugged it in I did love it. So even though it has some flaws, it's still an inspiring and great instrument.
@@theleads6627 kidding around obviously bud. And I'm 47...full grown man here thanks👍...me grow up as u use alphabet soup like a 13 year old on TikTok..🤪? Yeah ok gfy...u familiar w that one? 😆
@@drdre4397 yeah there were a couple real minor issues that had more to do w setup than fit and finish..and the picture for both my SG and LP studio showed the same dirty workstation..but this is a full scale build factory so I can understand that to a point...but when u are photographing someone's bn 2000 dollar guitar a nice picture in a designated place in the factory that makes the guitar really shine for the customer I think is a nice touch..pic quality really terrible too..blurry and shitty lighting...cmon GIBSON
I used to work in that shop. :) best guitar store on the planet.
I love the folks at Maple Street. I’ve bought a bunch of classical and acoustic guitars there over the years, and George was great helping me every time. I remember Lindsay when he was a teenager hanging around the shop. And I had a grand time taking lessons there with Sam McPherson. Great memories. :-)
Maple street guitars has such nice people as well, one of my favorite local shops
when I was 16 I saved all my money from working in a warehouse, watched the old / buy sell weekly for guitars and one day I saw a 74' SG Custom. I convinced my dad to drive about an hour out of the city to meet the seller where I bought my first real guitar. That was 20 years ago and I still pick it up everyday. Its not completely original and has its battle scars from its past life before coming into my possession, I have plans to eventually mod it to make pick up selection a little more dynamic. My first love I will never part ways with it.
Amazing story! SG Customs are amazing. What color is it? Vintage white like Glen Buxton’s?
@@DevinRyanVitek Bro. It looks like we have the same taste in guitars and music. I see you on just about everything I watch on RUclips. 😂🤙👊
And yeah I’m wondering about the color also.🤘🏻
@@markrosenquist8259 Haha! Yes, totally! Nothing wrong with loving great guitars and music \m/
@@DevinRyanVitek definitely not brother
@@DevinRyanVitek Its got the Natural Mahogany finish. Sadly the fret board was replaced so it lacks the Block inlays and Binding its just a plain dot inlay board and the Harmonica bridge was replaced with a TOM, all prior to my purchase. Still a bad ass guitar.
My favorite store Glad you did a video with Maple Street. George is a class act and his son Lindsay is great. Jake is a awesome guitar tech Best store in Atlanta
Congrats on the SG Rhett! I am also fortunate to have a vintage, pre-war Martin (1941 D-18) so I can't wait for the next video!
Love Maple Street! Bought my last guitar from them. Awesome shop.
I always felt Pete Townshend’s SG on “Live at Leeds” is one of the greatest guitar tones ever recorded. Not sure if anyone agrees but it goes from raging animal to the cleanest most beautiful chime. Old mahogany and p-90’s. (And a wall of High Watts)😊
Pete's tone in the Woodstock movie does it for me. It's so cool, the moment the band gets announced and you hear the hum of those Hiwatts. The Woodstock version of "Sparks" that can be seen in "The Kids Are Alright" is also killer.
Yes 🙌: Pete,s sound at that time with this same SG Junior with the Hiwatts I believe is a truly great sounding rig 🌞⭐️🙌❤️
I agree with you all. Young Man Blues sounding for me is Killer!!! 👍👍👍😉😅
It also sounds perfect with a good Fender tweed amp like a tweed deluxe.
It's one of the great guitar records ever made. All the tones. And his tone from that show tops any live show The Who recorded. Yes, any of them.
2:13 I am just AMAZED at how the dog just turns into a guitar.
Aside from being about a million times better player than I am (and I might be exaggerating my skills) I'm always in awe of the tone and sound quality in these videos. That guitar and amp sound amazing together!
Hey great to see Maple Street Guitars get some love, it's a great store with really nice and helpful people!
5:47 that first chord alone. loving the tone. very cool axe indeed!
Great find Rhett. I've got my Dad's 1970 gold to Les Paul Deluxe with mini humbuckers.
Rumble !! Sweet guitar, Rhett, Congrats !!
This music reminds me of a nice day of my life. On that day I was so happy and I can't forget it. thank you so much my friend 😀🌹❤
Congrats on the SG! Looking very forward to hearing more of it.
SGs have the best sitting-down playing position of any guitar. Nice find, enjoy.
That sweet little junior is just oozing tone. Good pick-up Rhett, enjoyed seeing this.
Love Maple Street, I get most of my guitars from here! Glad you enjoyed it!!
Congratulations for your new purchase... that guitar sounds wonderful; it's a great example of what vintage sound is.
Regards,
We buy picks from that store. I used to work 2 doors down from that guitar shop at a restaurant.
Congratulations Rhett. It sounds awesome! Can’t wait to see part 2!
Really pleased for you. A great guitar like that deserves to be with someone who’ll play it and treasure it.
Rhett make sure to check out the music city bridge. Co-designed with Tom bukovac. Will intonate beautifully and will only improve the playability. Retrofits without additional holes. Pops right on. I’ve got one on my 63 Les Paul Jr. Bridge was the best investment I’ve made gear wise in years
Why hello 👋 Mr Norris. And Tom is the sh1t.
I had a 64 sg jr many years ago, tobacco burst, original p90, and an aftermarket schaller fine tuning bridge. It was a beast. Hope you enjoy your new baby as much as I loved mine. SG jrs are the best.
Definitely no need for a plan B for this video! That's probably the cleanest SG Junior I've ever seen so far. I may never own vintage anything besides a 1930s May Bell parlor acoustic I've had for a while and I'm good with that... but that P90!
Definitely a combo of a P90 Les Paul Junior, and an SG that resonates.
Side note, he tested both guitars at Righteous in a previous video, so this is the result
@@TotalEvo7 .. I’m gonna look for that one.. thanks
Rhett, when you started to play slide guitar on it, I thought I was standing at the CROSSROADS, waiting to make a deal. 🤣✨💎💎💎
Wow! I bought a fantastic Ash-bodied 2015 Shawbucker Strat from Lindsay online! He told me over the phone it was a case queen - when I received it, he wasn't lying. Beautiful guitar and extra 'goodies' - picks/stickers/super nice luggage tag/quality cleaning cloth, etc.! Had a GREAT experience with Maple Street Guitars.
Great sounding guitar! Maple Street is a great shop. Lindsay, Mom and Dad, and crew are all wonderful to deal with. Highly recommend. Love that little Hopper mugging for the cam. Hope Lindsay can find perfect replacement for his awesome Collings OM that was stolen. 😢
How old school and awesome does that shop look. Talk about charm.
If I ever have the budget for a vintage instrument, an SG Junior would be the one... so simple, straightforward, and versatile
i just got one passed down to me from my great grandpa. its so powerful and its like jammin with him. everyone says its a sought out guitar. im not getting rid of it but im checking out cool videos on it.
Absolutely love it. Rhett just got finished saying how much he hates how SGs are asymmetrical, then he finds a junior SG and buys it.
I’d do exactly the same thing.
That used to be me with Telecasters. When I was younger, I could never wrap my head around the body and headstock, but one day I bought one on sale and it all just clicked. I’ve picked up another one since then, and I’ve never looked back.
A love P90 SGs. I got one!
@@FatadayKorngor I've heard this exact story so many times. Happened to me haha
@@FatadayKorngor I was the exact same way, but 2 years ago, I converted to Teles. Now I can't believe why I didn't pick one up sooner.
Lindsey is a class act and Maple Street are some of the best guys in Atlanta to deal with. Very cool story. I think I know what guitar is being featured next...
I'm not a massive fan of SGs or P90s, but dear lord that sounded incredible!
With the right gear and amp pairing, you’ve got the sabbath tone. Pretty good if you ask me
Just love p90’s, raw and edgy, if a bit noisy sometimes 🙂
😁 I'm the opposite or the op, I'm a p90 SG guy and watching this I'm thinking 'man, he's gonna love that'
Praise the Lord, the Fuzz evangelist has converted another man into seeing the light!
Lmfao 🤣🤣🤣
All you need is a LP Jr with a P90 and you can cover all the ground that you need to cover!
My ears are gushing. Wow! Congratulations to you, Rhett!
Hey guitar community.I hope you are having a great day and don’t forget:Keep Practicing 😜❤️
Please don’t remind me 💀
I learned one thing you don't get better just noodling.
My first guitar was a 1962 Fender Musicmaster and my amp was a Fender Vibro Champ from the same year.
It wasn't vintage but it was pre CBS.
My dad got it for me. My dad also left me a 1944 Gibson SJ. It's beat down and played hard. He took it on all of our camping trips.
He took it down the Colorado river thru the grand canyon on one of those rafting trips.
It still sounds and plays great.
That's a beautiful SG! Congratulations! It sounds so good!
Congrats Rhett!!! KILLER SG!!!
Congrats Rhett. That SG Junior sounds exceptional. I have a '59 Junior. They all sound so good...you just can't go wrong with them. Perfect choice for your first vintage guitar.
Stunning guitar - looks and tones - great score!!
Sincere Congrats, RS! So..I'm a lefty. i have a flipped Gretsch and a Supro from the early 60s which are great, but I finally got my first FACTORY LEFT HANDED PRE-CBS FENDER all restored by my tech less than 2 years ago. CAUTION! Golden Era guitars can actually change the way we play! Enjoy in great health! I look forward to seeing it again in future posts of yours.
Not a big fan of the SG shape, but I really liked the tone. Congratulations!
Why do you really like this one then?
@@GaryAppledale You probably misread, he said "the tone".
There is just something special about vintage guitar. Like your friend said, you can see the passion in what the other person had when wielding this instrument. Sick ass guitar Rhett! Congrats !
Breaks a $5000 acoustic, buys a vintage SG junior! You're on fire my man! Love it!
Rhett showing the love for Link Wray, “Rumble!” The song that started me down the road to rock and roll ruin, and loving
every step. P-90s rule!
I appreciate the draw and like most collectors, it's a passion but I'm so f'n glad I don't get sucked into this rabbit hole! "Tools" yes...for pro, "working musicians" is where they belong. Through my day gig I've seen at least 3 Drs collections, with the dentist in the group having at least 4 Dragons, a relic'd SRV and JH strat as well as numerous vintage Fenders and Gibsons. I heard him play at the music store where my brother-outlaw worked at the time and the guy could hardly play a lick. Ya, he really needed these. I'll just keep on keepin on with finding decent cheaper instruments and hopping them up - thank god for CNC! I loved the part where the pup was pulled on this guitar and the poor workmanship was exposed. You should see the absolute horrible craftmanship with my 74' BC Rich Eagle. It's a joke. Like some stoner with a router went at it and one of the spots the electronics cover is screwed barely has a c'hair of meat left between the slab and the cavity. Ya, no thx..
That is the entire package……just WOW. I’m an original 65 myself, and I approve ! Beautiful color too! Well done Sir!
Grats reht, it sounds like a comfy warm blanket feels on a blustery cold day. Normally I am not an sg fan but that one is obviously very special.
Wow! That tone with the slide! Dream tone and nice guitar!
I was lucky. When I was in high school ('76-80) I picked up a 1967 SG Special for what now would be a song; it was a couple summers of lawn mowing for me at the time. It is all-original, has a bit of checking on the front, and I still have it in it's original case.
Someday someone near to me will take it on it's next journey, it is a super nice and very special instrument to me. Congrats on your purchase, it is a gorgeous guitar!
Welcome to the club. I bought my first one in 1983, it was a buy and return and it was built in ‘82 probably, very vintage… now. Wait long enough and all of your guitars will be vintage. Just like us older players. 😁
Greeting from Tokyo. Rhett I’m happy for you. Congratulations for getting the beautiful “tool.” The guitar is both sonically and cosmetically breathtaking.
Awesome find! I hope that beauty will be a centerpiece of your new studio.
Great choice. It's all in the fingers and the knobs. My favorite guitars. I have 2 of them.
Congratulations Rhett! So happy for you. Enjoy.
Great video Rhett - and a beautiful 6 pound score. RUMBLE!
Beautiful SG Les Paul !!!
I wish you the best with your Gibson !!!
I love Gibsons !!!
Awesome to see you at maple street
Congratulations,Rhett Shull. It’s great to see such a beauty be passed down to a man with your talents. Simply awesome
Coincidently, yesterday I listened to Mountain Live in the 70s. I can imagine this guitar making a similar joyful noise! Enjoy it. I know we will all enjoy hearing what you do with it.
Congratulations Rhett, that's a Fantastic Gibson!! Make it sing Sir, make it sing!!
Love SG’s! Greatest stringed rock machine!!!
The tone of that SG literally brought a tear to my eye! Amazing. My dream guitar as well.
That's a beauty. Congrats. Vintage guitars will spoil you. They are different animals. A year ago I didn't own a vintage electric. Now I own three.
SOUNDS AMAZING RHETT! THE HARMONICS ARE RIDICULOUS! CONGRATS! YOUR GONNA KILL WITH THAT THING!
Haven't seen Lindsay (or George) for a couple years, will have to get over there soon.
[Rhett, you should grab a Carr]
At 2:16 i thought he said: "So this is the way?" And suddenly i heard a wild flute appear in the background. Thanks for the awesome video, Sir!
Congrats you deserve it! Enjoy and take good care of it.
Man I love an SG jr! I have a lowly ‘18 banner logo version and I love it. Great score on your vintage piece! And i freakin’ love your slide playing. Perfect guitar for that!
Can't wait to see you refinish it a different color, and Install different pickup, and different tuners!!! So incredible for modding!!!
.metal flake aqua green
Congrats, what a stunner..!
That was really cool cant wait to see pt 2
Wow, what a sweet SG Jr.! Gorgeous, congratulations!
Congratulations! Good acquisition and well deserved. Thank you for sharing this experience.
Man, there's some magic in that SG!
My first guitar I bought with my own money was a 66 Gibson sg. I still have it. It’s great in the studio. Congratulations!
P 90s....my favorite pickups ever...period...that guitar sounds like Live at Leeds to me....great find!
SGs are definitely my favorite looking Gibson and P90s are simply the best pickups for me. Absolutely gorgeous and what a tone! You are a lucky man!!! Enjoy it cause you deserve it! Congrats 🎉
Wow, 1965. Looks and sounds fantastic. Congratulations
I picked up. ‘66 Jag a few years ago from the second owner (manufactured pre-CBS, but assembled just at the acquisition). I got lucky since it was a ‘barnyard’ find. I think 1966 was a very good year for Gibson and Fender!
This is an awesome guitar! It really suits you, Rhett! Congratulations!
I have five electrics and four acoustics. Of the nine, only one is a vintage piece - my beloved '65 Hagstrom II! Guitars are awesome!!!
Gretat video, Rhett, and what an awesome specimen, that SG...gotta love the simplicity of it...and that growl!!
Man that thing is CLEAN.... very nice.
That sounded gorgeous!... I'll be waiting patiently for part 2 of this story. Sounds like it'll be worth waiting for.
