    As a Jewish orthodox guy, it is awesome to see someone not from our community and culture enjoying Jewish music.
    You definitely will get new subscribers and much more views. Your videos and reactions to our music is just so much fun to watch. Keep'em coming.

This video is about 10 years old, you should check out some of his new stuff, he has some incredible music. He is an extremely talented composer and lyricist. Props to you for getting yourself into our music! I hope you enjoy your journey!

    Once again you're analysis is flawless. I agree--an interesting request from whoever wanted you to react to this song/singer. Anyway he sounds better when speaking Yiddish (it wasn't hebrew) because that's his primary language. Also kugel is a traditional Jewish food made primarily from potatoes, often eaten on shabbos. He was searching up "hentelach" the name of one of his biggest hits. As for the fridge, no real meaning behind it that i can think of.

    I don’t think this song specifically had to do with the sabbath - we all just take it for granted that we can’t use electricity and stuff, we don’t need a song abt it. I’m pretty sure it’s just about how texting and social media is negatively impacting our social lives and relationships.
    Btw we can use fridges on Shabbat just as long as we turn off the automatic light (or else every time we open the fridge we turn the light on).

  • @aboredbochur
    @aboredbochur 2 года назад +4

    The significance in the fridge is that in that part of the song he does a play on words. The letter I in iphone pronounced aii means egg in Yiddish so he says I remember when an "aii" only meant eggsalad.
    And then he goes on to say he remembers when blackberries weren't grown in Manhattan but on trees and only people with headaches would use tablets (i.e. Advil)
    So he opened the fridge to show an egg.

    • @betsymendlovits6704
      @betsymendlovits6704 2 года назад

      The phones are in the fridge because that’s where blackberries belong. He says he remembers when blackberries didn’t grow in Manhattan, he’s talking about Blackberry devices which are very popular (or at least were when this song was released) in the Hasidic community.

  • @mittelman
    @mittelman 2 года назад +7

    The Yiddish verses (these are actually Yiddish lines, not Hebrew) are pretty creative.
    Like the refrigerator scene goes like this:
    iPhone, iPad, iPod, Ei vus kimt dus tzi mein shteebl? (Meaning how does it belong in my house. Ei is like a multi-purpose Yiddish word used here as in “how”)
    Ich gedenk nuch ven a ei, hut gemeint an ei mit tzvibl (I remember when an I meant eggs and onion, eggs in Yiddish is also called Ei, and it’s referring to a delicacy traditionally served at the Sabbath day meal).
    Not sure if I explained it well enough, but these are actually pretty funny lines with lots of word play, way better than the English ones.

  • @freespeech100
    @freespeech100 2 года назад +10

    By the way there's a certain genius in Lipa rhyming the word kugel with google..... pretty much all Jews (or culinary experts) pronounce the 'u' in kugel like the 'oo' sound in BOOK. Which DOESN'T actually rhyme with GOOGLE. Except for Chassidic Yiddish speakers who speak English as a second language...... since their first language doesn't have the ooooo sound, they would pronounce Google to rhyme with Kugel. So the rhyme sounds more ingenious than forced.....

    Also he said only who ever has a headache used to take a tablet meant as a pill for painkiller not a tablet of technology

    The fridge and the egg. "Egg" in Yiddish is pronounced "eye" or the letter "I" it's a word play on the theme of the song.
    He still remembers the old days when "I'' - the indicator for technology e.g. iphone ipad etc. meant something related to eggs as opposed to tech and he refers to a Sabbath morning entree popular as "egg-with-onions" which would sound like "i-Mit zvible" in Yiddish

    The Sefardi Jews have a similar language called Ladino which is old Spanish for the most part that they kept after they were kicked out of Spain. It's less widely used because of how old it is and how they scattered to different places in the world also made it harder to keep but because large Spanish communities moved to Turkey so many Turkish Jews speak Ladino.

    Lipa is a genius lyricist but not the best vocalist. He brought modern pop into Jewish Hasidic music (many traditional rabbis didn’t approve). His English is not the best so he’s not as confident. When he sings in Yiddish, his lyrics and play on words really shine more. He’s mostly knows for his performances, music, and lyrics; similar to any pop star.
