I’ve been using the same tinsel and decorations for years. I was stunned when I found out a lot of people chuck theirs out and replace it every year. It honestly never occurred to me to throw out something that’s not broken.

I bought gingerbread house kits on clearance last year for $1.00 each. Stored them and we’ll build them this year. They usually just get thrown away or used to feed the birds so it doesn’t matter if they are expired.

I think people overspend because it’s a rush and they do have fun but I think people tend to overspend out of pressure. When I became a widow 10 years ago and my annual income dropped by over $50,000 a year I had to have a little discussion with my family. For the first three years my husband was gone I felt a tremendous amount of pressure to ‘Keep up’ so to speak and then after that, I just refused to put myself through that anymore so I had to talk with them. I refused to feel embarrassed or shameful over it. For me to put myself in that position, and then have to pay for it many months afterwards hoping and praying nothing else came up so I didn’t have to carry the debt that I accrued over maintaining what’s always been during the holiday season. I just had to bite the bullet and tell them that I needed to scale back and make some serious adjustments or else I couldn’t partake in the exchange of gifts any longer.

So I think everyone should do their family traditions without shame and have fun! One way I see lots of economical people save money is to not buy matching pajamas. I totally get that, but my son who has Autism loves matching pajamas and he told me that he wanted less presents and matching pajamas. He loves them and wants to wear them for weeks! So for our family -- matching pajamas will be a staple and we will cut corners other places. I love that you say do not let social media dictate your life and this is true!

The girls Christmas dresses, I buy after Christmas when they are on clearance, and I size up for the next season. This saves a lot of money. Usually, they mark down the dress to $3-5, but you just have to wait it out. I used to buy the gingerbread houses, but now I make cupcakes and mix up frosting and pull out all of the sprinkles. There is nothing to compare to, and the kids do their own thing. It keeps them occupied for a couple of hours. They love it. Love your holiday advice Rachel! What I love most about this is the honesty and transparency of holiday stress, and tips to overcome it. I just paid off my car in November and now debt free (big woohoo!), and I put so much down on the last payment that I didn't have as much as I wanted for holiday fun and shopping this year. Your advice reminds me to be content, and keep those boundaries strong this year! So far, I skipped a big holiday party because I didn't want to buy another outfit - and that came with the cost of people asking me why I didnt go and me responding as needed 😅 But I kept my peace and my money! And instead of budgeting out $$ for gifts per person, I'm making cookie tins this year! Now, I don't know how to, but I can learn! I'm hoping to win this holiday with spending - my inner me is still screaming with FOMO hahaha but as you've said, I am in control of my money, and I'm creating a life I love! With no debt!!!

    I buy things at 75 - 90% off.
For where I am right now for most gifts, I want to give presents that sell for about $20 but I’m determined to only pay about 2 or 3 dollars for them. I only want to spend $3 a person.
Barnes & Noble was selling Nook cases for $1. They sold for $18 originally. I got all 6 of what they had and I put a writing tablet in each so you’d have a stylish way to carry a notepad in your bag.
Rite Aid had $19.99 candies at 90% off and I got all 16 of them at two separate stores. They are beautiful, nicely scented, three wick candles for $2.
If I can spend just a couple dollars per person but with gifts that would be listed at $20, I feel content.

I need one sweater. I have 3. I need one more and I'll be fine. I work full time. We buy a live decorated tree. I have very few decorations. I keep my decorations up until the second week of the new year. I lost my Christmas excitement years ago. I have diagnosed PTSD. It's not what you seem to think. People stress me out along with leaving the house, getting out of bed, falling asleep, etc etc. It's not one activity at all.

    Here’s what I won’t buy!
New/excessive wrapping paper. I buy the huge $10 roll of the brown paper(always 50% off at Hobby Lobby). I use leftover ribbons or greenery to decorate the boxes and the paper can be used all year because it is not just for Christmas! Also, you can write on the gift who it is for-no need for tags.
I won’t be buying new Christmas decor. I repurpose what we already have! My husband actually made me a nativity scene for the yard out of an old piece of plywood+ white paint we already had + $5 box of lights!
We wont be buying luxury gifts! As a family we stopped doing that YEARS ago. No cars, no pricey electronics, etc.
Husband and I have an agreed upon limit for one another and we always stick to that.

At my parents home my mom always during 24th she made some special dinner with some sweet dessert some years we received a gift, depending on my parents budget and it was something that we really needed like clothing or shoes. One time I received a toy, it was this baby with a hoodie, which I never used I kept it on a shelf 😂. When we arrived to USA I was amazed how many toys, clothing and food was at people home. But in my house the tradition is the same. Except for gifts, we don't give gifts at all because honestly we don't need anything we have all what we need and little extra, so we play cards and is so much fun. My husband was totally opposite his mom goes crazy with all the decorations, the living room gets packed with presents most for the grandchildren while they have boxes full of toys, they party until late. But, seems like everyone is on their own world, they dont play or get connected to each other. They have so much stuff, but feels a big emptiness. So, this caused some problems at my own home because holidays are less gifts and party and more enjoyment of my loved ones, my husband was more spending. At my house I don't do decorations at all, my house looks the same everyday. My husband loves decorations, so we agreed that he can do xmas light outside the house and we keep the inside clean. And thats how we do. We spend December 24th at his family and the 25th at my parents and December 31st at our home or we take a trip. We enjoy the season so much, but we dont go crazy on anything, it saves time, money and stress.

Been over 20 years since I did a Christmas with every thing you a are speaking of. Now I put a wreath on the door. Set up my manger and plug in my grandmothers ceramic tree. Takes 30 minuets. We don’t buy presents except for the grandchildren. one gift. Spent a Christmas with family in 1999. It was materialistic frenzy. I literally felt sick as I watched the kids went from present to present and had no time to even process the gift. Decided to change how we celebrated right then and there. Just listening to your video makes me question Why do we need to put ourselves through this ritual every year?

I think we all go a bit mental at Christmas to be honest! It’s all first world problems anyway! We have to buy kids more stuff. We have to fill the house with food. We have to have a bigger tree, and we have to change our decoration colour scheme every year!
No, we need to stop, and just be thankful for everything we have. Enjoy your family, and make memories with them. STOP SHOPPING!!

Growing up as a boomer here in the US , Christmas was about church & doing for others first & foremost ! Sure , we got & gave gifts , but carefully selected & w/ money from our Christmas Club accounts . Lots of cooking & baking , but the majority was to be gifted before we were allowed to indulge . Crafts , sewing , making cards , ornaments & even candles , etc. was fun that kids & adults shared ! 🥰 We were far from poor , but I still remember " ironing " the previous year's gift wrap & ribbon & re -purposing gift boxes long before recycling became common practice ; doing so became the source of a lot jokes among family & friends . 😂

My mom died in a car accident when I was 18 - she was only 36. I have not been able to shake the you only live once mentality. It could all be over tomorrow so why not live everyday to the fullest? Your way of thinking is very restrictive, disciplined and counting on a future. I eat the food, travel, buy the shoes and have the experiences. I don’t think I could ever change. I’m trying but it’s hard. 😬

She will probably fail at some of this because she’s human, but she’s still giving a challenge for herself based off her own experiences surrounding the holidays. This kind of thing is different person to person, but it’s about reflecting and learning as you go through your own journey. This is her own reflecting. You will have your own version of that.
