all that means is you can access windows files on the bootcamp partition. Anything you run, (games included) will be virtualized through parallels if that is what you are running.
you determine how big you want parallels to be, i gave it 6 gigs. Its actually never frozen on me, and yes, you can view files on parallels. Bootcamp I dont know for sure, since I dont use it.
In Parallels, you can simply drag a mac file to windows and it will automatically change it so that it's compatable for windows, and vice-virsa? Well what about in Bootcamp? What's the process for doing the same thing? What about 'tricky' files, such as large Illustrator or Photoshop files? Thanks for the help!
So, what happens is boot camp will separate your hard drive into two. Your computer will look like it has two hard drives (Mac OS and the other Windows (once you install it)). In your Mac settings you can choose which Hard Drive to boot from automatically. You can override this by holding the option key then it'll let you choose. So, anyone who restarts your computer can boot into windows. However they may not have access to it as they need a User account. Just like a normal windows computer.
Not to confuse people more but I installed Windows 7 on my MBP through Bootcamp. Once everything was done and activated - I installed Parallels and it gave me option to choose BootCamp as my OS to boot. I love it since it gives me option to run Windows quickly from Parallels if need it for less intensive programs and I can reboot into Bootcamp and have access to the same files if I need to run something more spec hungry. Has anyone else tried this?
sounds amazing. had no idea it was possible. the problem is i can't find the genuine bootcamp-compatible iso windows 7 file. do u know where can i download this to make it work with bootcamp? thanks!
Excellent!!!! Thanks a lot John, you should charge Mac for your comments!!!! Really, you helped me summarize the difference between both softwares, and you made it very simple, thanks a lot again
@theNerdGamer88 if you have lepord or newer, go with boot camp but as for viruses : not that i know of. files: you cant copy files in boot camp but you can in parallels
Thanks for the review. This has help me decide a little further. My intent is to have a windows partition for gaming purposes but utilized the great threads of a Mac.
Date: October 2020. Parallels runs absolutely swiftly on my 2013 Macbook Pro. It runs windows better than on any windows machine that I have used in the past 8 years.
yes you can get viruses through bootcamp but not sure if it affects the mac partition. i think it does affect the whole disk, you can defiantly get a virus, but im not 100% sure on that one.
What about Visual studio? I will be doing a lot of C++ and Java at school... so which option is better for me? It's nothing extremely heavy per say, but i'd like something smooth that will work, without sacrificing the great machine that my mac is. Suggestions? PS- Can parallel use all of the MBP recourses if I choose to run windows only, or do you HAVE to run Lion in order to run W7?
Will bootcamp (installed with windows Vista) run drivers which were not compatible with my mac? I have the viewsonic monitor w/ built in webcam but viewsonic only offers the drivers and software for windows. So will bootcamp be able to run those drivers?
If there are multiple users on an iMac, and I install bootcamp, (already have parallels) does it mess up parallels, and does all users have access to the windows once boot camp is installed? Thanks.
Can Windows and OSX see the same files when running under Boot Camp? If not, what is the work around. Can you see them with Drop Box? Can you access files using a USB drive with a FAT format?
I have Bootcamp and Parallels. However, my Parallels will only start up if I disable NIVIDIA drivers, Uknown stuff, or Apple stuff. I am able to work with any application except any programs that need NIVIDIA drivers or videogames. So when I need to play games or use any program that need NIVIDIA drivers than i go to Bootcamp.
Is there a risk of getting all sorts of viruses using bootcamp? I would like to load up XP on my Imac to play some PC games. I also don't want to go online to register it, cos I could got viruses just doing that, I don't plan on using the internet at all with the old XP I'd load up. Any thoughts?
If I were to buy a 500gb external hard drive, is there a way for me to set Boot Camp up to where it just uses all of that hard drive and nothing from the mac itself?
When you say "give it ram", does the ram that is used when you are using Windows does the ram get taken away from the OS 10, or does it go back when you get out og Windows?
hey i wanna get fruity loops on ma mac is parrells good or music production programs? i wanna be able to easily tranfers files frmo mac to the pc system
Can you run both on the same machine? I just ordered a MBP with Parallels. Can I also install BootCamp and run it which ever way it suits me best at the time?
Hello John, I have installed parallels with windows 7. Should I install Bootcamp in order to get access Windows 7? You said 3D games run slower because it is a virtual machine. Will I have any problems installing Windows 7 twice? Thanks for your advice. (I was hoping to use it for video editing and 3DStudio MAX.)
I will be doing a lot of video editing. As of now, I seem to be leaning towards Parallels as my choice of having windows as I would like to use Sony Vegas. Will Parallels do fine or will it lag?
its so funny seeing how back then jon actually had a set of nuts and he wasnt such a lovable tool like he is now. dont get me wrong, this guys the shit and of course i subscribe, but dude havnt you guys noticed back in the day jon sounded just....cooler because he wasnt aware he had such an audience.
hey im a new subscriber to you and i have got a question on parallels. i installed leopard and my parallels didn't work (keeps on crashing) just wondering if you have had this same experience and/or you can tell me how i can get parallels back up and running on my mac. thanxs
I have Parallels 4 ( P4) on a Mac pro 6ghz ram.. it can be very slow..I also have a video program that does not work on P4 + was told it will only work in B/C Can I run a seprate B/C + P4 on 1 computer? do i need 2 downloads of xp? I hav 2 int'l drives, can i run B/C on 1drive and P4 on my master Can I access B/C from P4 w/o having to reboot.?know anything about that ? am i just going back to my slow paralles + not being to run my video program? 4) to install B/C do i have to uninstall P4?
just wanted to know with parallel, how much space does it take out of your harddrive and has it ever froze while using both?? btw, iam a windows user planning to buy a macbook but dont want to loose some softwares i use on windows, cheers in advance
can i install knock off 3d max 2011 and vray on windows 7 on a mac, using bootcamp? any problems encountered. will intel i7 mac prohibit pirated programs, even if im gonna use these programs in windows 7? i'm so eager to know. thanks!
@beavin247 Hi, I am using boot camp and I would like to use parallel desktop WITH boot camp as you say. The problem is I don't know how . I have PD6 on Mac OS X 10.5.8 and Windows 7 on Boot Camp. Please help. Thanks!!
hey jon, love your vids. anyway, what should i get, a MBP with 4gb of ram, or a 20" iMac with 3gb of ram? also, how do you manage with the stock version? thnaks
Hey dude, i totally agree with the fact that dragging from one os to another is stupid. but putting windows on a mac is awesome so you can have the best of pc/mac.. so you can use windows only programs.. and lots of people want to try windows 7.
great info, i just subscribed, i have a doubt, how fast is gaming on parallels?, i mean i undesrstand its obviously not as fast as in bootcamp, but how fast is not as fast? anyways im installing windows 7 next monday (its until monday cus i get free windows7 at school). I´ll post a comment with all details or upload a video response.
hey man thanx a lot pretty informative description u gave....! buh i wanna know if i have allocated 1 gb ram for the parallels and if i wanna increase that to 2 gb. so how can i make the alteration......? :)
I think the thing that I like most about bootcamp is that I can hibernate windows and then start up OSX, and then I can shut down OSX and windows will still be there
3 questions. 1. so... is bootcamp free?? 2. if i use bootcamp, that means that it uses all 4 gigs of ram and 2.53 GHz as if i had like a superfast pc? 3. i have a 250 gb external hard drive. if i wanted to use bootcamp to run windows xp on my mac, could i save all of the stuff to the hard drive? like, i could dedicate 250 gigabytes of memory to my windows? and i could save the windows OS to the hard drive? sorry for the confusing message... thanks! please respond...
Hello, Iam kadiyam Rajshekar, Actually iam looking forward to buy a laptop (high end one) which can last around 4 to 5 years, Iam in a research stuff have to deal with CAD modeling for semiconductor devices and some matlab stuff, at the same time i also play some games like COD, counter strike, while going through some different laptops i have come across three laptops , they are Apple 13 inch pro (i7 dual core, 16 gb ram , tell me is it 5th gen or 4th gen proc ? ) , XPS 15 ( i7 6th gen HQ proc), Dell Precision (i7 6th gen HQ), In apple if iam using windows then in that whether i will be able to run CAD software where the requirement is windows 7 or 10, and also i would like to know about the battery back up in apple when iam using Windows using bootcamp., pls give me ur valueable suggestions.
You can select which is your default OS to boot (from OSX). So, If you need to boot from Windows, you have to press the power button and ALT key (and keep it press) so you will see the display with the option to boot. Windows, OSX or Restore from OSX. Bye!
@animefreek619 Yeah, but the annoying thing is to having to restart the computer everytime .. :P And the fact that I've got like 20GB of storage left.. ^^
all that means is you can access windows files on the bootcamp partition. Anything you run, (games included) will be virtualized through parallels if that is what you are running.
you determine how big you want parallels to be, i gave it 6 gigs. Its actually never frozen on me, and yes, you can view files on parallels. Bootcamp I dont know for sure, since I dont use it.
if price is not an issue, go for the mbp with 4
you sure can..you can even use parallels to access files form your bootcamp partition!
12 years later .. Even more than before, Windows is a MUST-HAVE on Mac OS!!
sure does
after you install parallels or bootcamp, which allow you to run windows you can.
they need separate xp installs, but parallels can read/write to BC's partition.
Thanks for that. Parallels can see and write to your external drive, so no problem at all!
I bought both. Parallels just allows you to run windows, but you need to install a full version of XP or vista.
@kionaki86 yes, since parallels is an application, and bootcamp is a partition of the harddisk.
yes, you need the xp full install disk.
@jackinator16 It can if your Mac partition is write enabled. Using bootcamp, it is read only unless you install third party software to enable write.
yup
yes, it takes ram from OS X. Once parallels is shut down, the RAM goes back to OS X
when parallels is not running it goes back to being used for OS X
So, what happens is boot camp will separate your hard drive into two. Your computer will look like it has two hard drives (Mac OS and the other Windows (once you install it)). i dont know about the isight...ill give it a whirl
No you can set it so it default launches to windows or osx. It asks you when you hold the alt during boot.
10.5 years later
Boot Camp functionality relies on BIOS >>"emulation"
@Macinabit go on the apple website on support u should find it there boot camp drivers
@theNerdGamer88 if you have lepord or newer, go with boot camp but as for viruses : not that i know of. files: you cant copy files in boot camp but you can in parallels

@jackinator16 viruses on windows wont affect the mac. or thats what ive heard
i use solidWorks (a 3d design package) on windows at the moment. will this work as quikly in parallels as it does on my pc?
So either way, Do you need the windows XP install disk for both BC and Parallels?
Can Windows and OSX see the same files when running under Boot Camp? If not, what is the work around. Can you see them with Drop Box? Can you access files using a USB drive with a FAT format?
@sxayaxang You would need to get Virtual PC for your G5 but it is very slow.
yup, no prob. Bootcamp makes a full blown windows machine.

I need to run Solid works and maybe AutoCad, is it better parallels?
I´m just concerned about the partition thing.
hey i wanna get fruity loops on ma mac is parrells good or music production programs? i wanna be able to easily tranfers files frmo mac to the pc system

So basically Im thinking of "adding" windows 7 mostly for gaming, so I should use Bootcamp right?
Could a virus on windows while running bootcamp or parallels effect your Mac par of the computer
How can I install parallels if I have vistal alredy installed with bootcamp
@beavin247

Does anybody know the minimum amount of hard drive you can allocate to windows with boot camp?
Parallels, vmware , and virtual box all run on Linux Ubuntu ...
I use and I have ran 3DS Max , and Maya in them and it works just fine...
Omg. I forgot how your videos were back in 2007. Still subscribed in 2013 :D
can i install both bootcamp and parallels?
wait you can take it off and get all your space and memory that it took back rite?
Omg john back in the day no way
So if I use BootCamp, I have to select if I want to use Windows or OS X every time I start it my mac up? Thanks for the video btw
9 years later..
13 Years here
sorry to bother,oh 1 more thing, can you view your files from each OS's on bootcamp and parralel??
would I be able to run both?
Do I need to purchase a Windows 8 for parallels or does it just run PC programs w/o Windows 8?
Did u install the Driver's ..?
Start Windows, and put your OSX Disc 1 (That came with your Computer) in your CD Drive, and install the Drivers.
Can you use USB with parallels?

You think I can run 3D Program on BootCamp
may i ask, what do you do for a living.
Thanks buddy, much appreciated.
I need the Ram for The Sims 2 and Grand Theft Auto IV with its setting maxed out. And the sims 2 full coletion! Plus Sims 3
Will gaming work on 32GB of RAM?
@animefreek619 Yeah, but the annoying thing is to having to restart the computer everytime .. :P And the fact that I've got like 20GB of storage left.. ^^
Thanks for your input.
