It managed to mix humor with the serious subjects of the day such as women’s rights, race relations, American culture, war, homosexuality, and more. The show couldn’t have become the phenomenon it was without the stellar All In The Family Cast.
Unfortunately, many of the main All In The Family cast members are no longer with us. Watch this video to learn about how they passed away and their incredible lives and careers.
The show was headed by Carroll O’Connor who played Archie Bunker - the cantankerous protagonist who represented the American everyman.
He had experience working on stage and had bit parts in film and television. But it was the role of Archie Bunker that launched him to stardom. It was also a role that he cherished for the remainder of his life.
Archie’s wife, Edith, was played by Jean Stapleton who also made her name through the show. She continued to act in film and television after the show ended before dying in 2013.
Actor Mike Evans played Lionel Jefferson who also became part of the spinoff show The Jeffersons. He was one of the favorite recurring characters of the show. He sadly passed away at age 57 in 2006.
Of course, Lionel wasn’t the only Jefferson from the show. Sherman Hemsley and Isabel Sanford were also two of the notable stars from the All In The Family cast. It was on this show that audiences were introduced two the famous onscreen couple. Isabel Sanford passed away in 2004 while Sherman Hemsley passed away in 2012.
Veteran TV actor Allan Melvin played Archie’s friend Barney and was one of the favorite members of the All In The Family cast. He passed away at the age of 64 in 2008.
Betty Garrett who played Irene, Edith’s friend, passed away at the age of 91 in 2011. She was another loved character from the show and added to much of the show’s humor.
But not all of the main cast members have left us. Let’s learn more about the All In The Family cast and remember their achievements throughout their careers.

...Gloria Bunker / Sally Struthers is still alive. Michael Stivic / Rob Reiner is still alive. Obviously, NOBODY is going to live forever, but its asinine how this video is titled welllllll before Reiner, Struthers and even how this video could allude to the actress that was Bunker's adopted daughter is supposedly ALREADY GONE! Stephanie Mills / Danielle Brisebois is her name and as of 2022, October, she's now 53 AND likely comfortably retired.

Dear All in the Family cast
I enjoyed the show for as long as it was long. I do hope you find other programs like this one. I also enjoy The Jeffersons, Good Times, etc. I grew up during the times these shows were on. I don't get them on my TV anymore. I grew up in the 50s and 60s. Please don't let shows like these end. They are good comedy shows that make you laugh. Good clean shows. My dad was just like Archie Bunker in many ways. Yours truly Gigi B.

And Rob Reiner is called meathead which according to norman lear was his father's nickname for him because he based archie and edith on his parents. Which I always thought was weird because instead of the bunkers having a son they had a daughter instead.

    • @jasonhurd4379
      @jasonhurd4379 3 года назад +20

@@Superman_305 Lear is being disingenuous when he claims he based Archie and Edith on his parents. Like Sanford and Son, All in the Family is an American version of a British sitcom. The British original is called Till Death Do Us Part, and was virtually identical with All in the Family, featuring an irascible, reactionary father, a sweet if dim-witted mother, their married daughter and their pseudo-socialist, unemployed son-in-law, who often tangled with the father. Lear may have transferred minor behavioral traits to the Bunkers from his parents, but their characters were firmly established already in the British original.

About two months before he died, I wrote to Mr. O'Connnor asking him for his autograph. He sent me one back, personalized, with both my first and last name. About a month later, he passed. I would never have bothered him had I known he was probably ill at that time. A couple months after that, I received a preprint autograph from his assistant or maybe a family member thanking me for writing to him, and to inform me of his untimely death. I was always moved by both gestures.

But I guess that’s what you get when you raise a generation that gets a trophy just for participation.

I find that when today's younger generation see the show, they immediately become triggered. I think its because of what had been drilled into their heads combined with the inability to watch the show from a historical perspective, IE, what America in general was like at time the show was on. I knew a man much younger than me who, when watching a couple of Honeymooner's episode's with me became very upset and said he could not believe that people watched a show back in the 1950's that glorified spousal abuse. I had to take the time to explain to him the realities of Ralph's character and how we would never in a million years strike Alice.

The 2 episodes I enjoyed was the shoe and sock episode and the episode where Mike and Gloria left to California. Got me in the feels. Carol o Conner has such horrible things happen to him no one deserved.

While I do enjoy these short explanations about the on stage actors, I have come to the conclusion that the people who cast these roles deserve a big shout out for their talents. We have all had the experience of seeing a show not getting off the ground because the individual actor simply did not mash together. The wrong casting in a show can quickly tank it. The recasting of Stephanie in Newhart saved the show as well as the dumping of Kirk. Who could imagine Seinfeld without Cramer? While Dick York was forced out of his role in Bewitched, due to poor health, the role was never the same with his replacement. The energy was never the same.

Clara portrayed by Holly Irving was a neighbour of the Bunkers in the early seasons. Lori Shannon was the female impersonator that Archie gave mouth to mouth to and was recurring. I saw some 1973 photos of the CBS studio parking lot with the four main characters coming to work on this show. Gloria driving a 1973 Monte Carlo, Mike a 1968 Mustang, Edith maybe an early 1970’s Chrysler, and Archie a 1972-1973 Mercedes. These folks drove to work at their professions in sunny LA! You really felt like you were in a blue-collar home in Queens even though it was a soundstage filmed in the same area as Gilligan’s Island. They moved the set to Universal Studios later on.

For those of us that remember them, I think we all owe them a huge debt of gratitude for their amazing talent, but not forgetting the incredible writers of the show and directors, everyone came together to make such amazing TV shows that made us all laugh, cry, but most importantly, made us all think twice about the most pressing issues of the day. I honestly believe that thanks to people like them, people like me, and openly gay man in an interracial marriage, can open where you live our lives and enjoy all the freedoms countless generations before us never had. Not to sound like an old fart, but they really don’t make them like they used to, I just find television today to be a little too sensationalistic, often using a lot of violence, sexual innuendo, and weak storylines to create a shell, nothing that really affects our society, but those shows back in the 70s truly were trailblazing, making the future a lot better for millions of people all across the world. It saddens me to know they are no longer with us, but they are for every immortalized on film, to remind us all of what they did for us and for society. May God be with them all, and maybe all the resting happily in peace xoxoxo

Then he buys this ridiculous statue to try to make up to Gloria. I also remember one where Archie got into some accident and hires a Jewish Lawyer and it didn't work out because the defence had 3 nuns as witnesses. Again they are all great!!
