There was a lot of love between those two. The way Caroll lit up when Jean walked out says it all!
Am I sitting here crying watching this? Yes, yes I am. My grandparents were the epitome of these two. Miss them all.
Me, too 😢❤
All in the Family was iconic. RIP Carroll and Jean.!!
Was iconic?!
IS iconic!
I adored these two, and still consider "All in the Family" one of the greatest TV shows of all time. It's been almost 50 years... Can you imagine anything on TV today still being around 50 years from now? That says it all...
Dating naked. Lol.
Andy Griffith is prime time on MeT.V.!!!!
I loved this show, MASH, Barney Miller. Quite the quality back then.
All in the family, the jeffersons, sandford and son, bewitched,Andy Griffith, on up to the partridge family, little house on the prairie, facts of life, different strokes. I'm 45 but I grew up in my granny's house so these are my all time favorites and so many more from these erase. Just simple easy living. Nothing to complicated. Miss them days so much. Oh whT I would give❤❤❤

"Jean loves me." The way his face lit up when he said that, it's obvious he loved her as well.
No
@Peace World on the show.
I thiñk th¹t edith had to be q saint to put p ith 1rchie all thos years. ¹¹
Even more so, the way his voice started choking up..
I can still hear my father laughing. It was his favorite show.😌 those were the days.😔I miss them.
@@8chk92 Didn't know that.👍
Same with my dad. Now, I watch reruns by myself....
@@8chk92 ...Including the former Roseanne Show!

I love them dearly! RIP Carroll and Jean
I pretty much shed a tear watching this. Absolutely priceless.
These two are pure class. You can’t help but love them
I loved the look on Carroll's face when Jean was talking--he truly adored her.
He loved his little "Dingbat" for all those years
Aye, you can see it clearly. 🍀🍀
It's so awesome to see someone so genuinely happy.
@@skingerskanger He loved the show, he loved Jean, but he didn't like having to say certain things to her. It always felt bad when he'd call her dingbat, or tell her to stifle. But as Jean was and always was, a professional who respected everyone she worked with and she also adored Carroll.
Honestly, during COVID...I have been watching all of these episodes and they were so brilliant and so incredible and THERE IS SO MUCH TO LEARN FROM THEM...SO MANY DEEP THEMES...my grandfather, who was Republican and my dad, who was liberal, used to love and watch the show and argued about the things that came up on the show. Watching "All In The Family" is getting me through this very difficult time.
The language Archie used would be beeped out because it was politically incorrect.
You can see the genuine love and admiration they had for each other.
Great thespians no one better there acting skills were so impeckable
They truly loved each other
He got teary eyed..
I never realized how brilliant all of the actors from Norman Lear's shows were until the shows ended and they went on to other things. Carroll O'Connor, Jean Stapleton, Bea Arthur, Sherman Helmsley, John Amos, and others are magnificent actors!!
Wow, I had never thought of this. So true!
Yup.
I do think O'Connor was great also in the tv series of "In the Heat of the Night" .
Quite an Iconic-Show~~~then there's Rob Reiner, who's still Morphin-Meathead
"All in the Family" was one of the few shows that made TV worth watching. Archie and Edith were such colorful characters!
I know your comment is old, but it is still true. Very little of today's television makes me think. It's very entertaining, but it doesn't make me think. This show made you think.
"TV worth watching" a few??

Same. They don't make em like they used to.
Sitting on a train watching this interview with Carroll and Jean , they are so genuinely nice to each other. Loved it
As far as I'm concerned, the saddest episode of ANY series was the one where Gloria and Mike left for California (All in the Family).
I think Carroll & Jean are still making heaven's residents laugh. They had an on-screen presence that nobody can match today.
Well except for Archies place. What a stinker
Carroll O"Connor was a very classy man. his honest affection for his cast mates came through in every interview he ever did.
His son's death was more than he could take.
@@garyfischer4357 I think so too. I remember when the reporters @ the time 1st approached him about it & he solemnly swore he'd go after the guy that sold him the drugs...& he did...guy went to prison for a few years
@@clairelivefreeordie2551 did carol ahd Jean die two weeks later?
He was so shy and graceful unlike Archie
@@craigusselman546it’s amazing how acting can deceive a person. In real life, Carroll O’Connor was a very deep, gentle, thoughtful, and liberal person. Archie was too on the inside, but his outside was very rough and crusty. And Jean Stapleton was actually very brassy and outspoken, but in a mannered way. If you’ve ever seen that long forgotten Richard Dreyfuss and Susan Sarandon movie The Buddy System, she was Susan’s mother and like her real life persona, very straightforward.
The stars of the greatest sitcom in television history.
Watching this makes you realize what great actors they really are. Nothing like their characters.
No kidding! They were so convincing on stage I thought they had to be at least somewhat like their characters, but not in the least.
It's weird to see them out of character.
They don't make them like that anymore

I remember how much my dad loved this show. He never missed it. Brilliant show. Wish they still made tv shows like this.
One of the most brilliant shows ever made...I love these 2 together.
Mr O'Connor seemed genuinely surprised and pleased to have seen her. Seemed like they were two old friends who hadn't seen each other for a while.
sew1835 When he died, she chose not to come to his funeral. She had to work instead. This behavior speaks volumes. They may have “seemed like two old friends” but they were not, not by a long shot. They were co-workers, who helped each other become very wealthy playing their respective characters of Edith and Archie. However, in real life, real friends would attend the other’s funeral. She was not there. She chose her work in theatre, and sent her regrets. Her choice. Mr. O’Connor may “have seemed generally surprised and pleased to see her” as you say. He certainly appeared that way on the show. But: They were not “two old friends.” They were two former co-workers. Sorry to shatter your illusions!
@@frederickrapp5396 maybe it was too hard for her...and if she was on broadway, it would have been difficult for her to leave...just bc you miss a funeral, does not mean you don't care...
lori s You make very good points. However, if somebody does not attend the funeral of a loved one, or a dear friend, I will remember. Even if it’s 50 years later. I will remember. Just sayin. One makes a statement, when one chooses to stay away, for whatever reason. Just my opinion.
@@frederickrapp5396 and that's YOUR opinion...not everyone feels the same...some people absolutely can not handle funerals...are you gonna hold it against them simply bc you feel differently and EXPECT them to be there? Funerals are also difficult for many people simply bc of scheduling...you usually don't get much planning time, so for you to expect everyone to drop their lives to attend is unfair...for some, it simply isn't possible...and for some, emotionally is isn't possible.
@@frederickrapp5396also, holding a grudge for 50 years bc someone missed a funeral is a bit obsessive
I love and miss Jean Stapleton so very much! She reminded me of my mother, not a mean bone in her body and always waiting on others. My father was a cranky kind of person and she just glossed over it as if she didn't know. She died early and I don't think my father knew her real worth until about twenty years later. She was a treasure!
I had an uncle and aunt just like them!
The friendship they had was so special. Each in awe of the other. ❤️
Hello how are you doing?
They both made me laugh so hard over the years.I miss them both dearly.
L Coters v
Yep
L Coters I cry everytime I see Carroll
Unfortunately in this day and age with so much focus on "Political Correctness, shows like All in the Family, The Jefferson's, Maude, Sanford and Son and What's Happening
could not be made using the original premise of the shows content.
It seems that nobody wants to tackle the issues of the day the way these shows did.
Robert Kerman Tackling the issues of how prejudiced people really are towards another and White are leading the charge with Blacks, Latinos, Jews etc... Muslim ban, Charlottesville, DACA. It's all bubbling to the surface isn't it? Well I guess Trump has certainly helped all the bigots to feel emboldened and we're seeing the effect now

Gosh, Carroll reminds me so much of my late dad, the kindness in his eyes says so much about his inner light. R.I.P., Mr O'Connor and Ms Stapleton...you are dearly missed.
This was the only time we got to see these two legends together on a talk show and those hosts almost ruined the whole experience. You don't interrupt your guests, particularly when they're telling interesting stories and you don't wave a $20 bill at Jean Stapleton and expect her to perform like a trained circus animal! Hosts aside, I'm so glad this footage exists! It shows they really admired and respected each other and there was genuine affection between them.
So true - embarrassing and insulting for that to happen, these are classically trained actors
"Those hosts?" Donnie and Marie Osmond. I thought the interviews were good and playful.
@@suzanneprock7286 and I thought they were bad and disrespectful and already explained why. O'Connor and Stapleton deserved better than these two. Glad you enjoyed watching them, though. Cheers!
@@analemos2327 You'd had to been around to watch Donnie and Marie, it was all in fun and you took it too personal, maybe someone else could have done a better job but your generation is so very touchy, lighten up Francis.
@@suzanneprock7286 I'm good, really. Disappointed that this is the only interview we have of these legends and was handled so poorly. Being younger doesn't prevent me from admiring and respecting in the present talented and dignified people like O'Connor and Stapleton and their wonderful work (dated, yet still so relevant). Donnie and Marie were probably good for their audience back then, but not so good to their guests, prioritizing cheap laughs at the expense of some possible discomfort. One needs empathy and self reflection to realize that some of the popular people back then did some disrespectful things without even realizing it. Didn't make them evil or horrible. Just a mediocre reflection of their time. Donnie and Marie are an example.
I LOVE YOU MR OCONNOR AND MRS STAPLETON YOUR LAUGHTER WILL BE WITH ME FOR THIS LIFETIME RIP

One of the best shows and TV couples ever!
One of my favorite shows. Carroll and Jean were brilliant actors. Norman Lear was a genius to bring this to prime time.
Two great actors that are missed. There is a void in Hollywood of actors of this caliber.
I had no idea her voice was soooo different. What a couple. Brilliant show. Timeless on many levels. Thanks Archie and Edith!
He was the best tv actor ever playing Archie bunker. best tv show ever too...RIP to both and thanks for all the laughs
These two are so adorable together - there can never be a show like "All in the Family" again.
Found this two and their all in the family masterpiece in 2021! The proof that what is good never dies.
I grew up watching Carroll O'Connor on "In the Heat of the Night," and he was brilliant as Bill Gillespie. Going back and watching him as Archie was a good experience in discovering his past work, and I respect him and Jean Stapleton for the work they brought to "All in the Family." That was truly groundbreaking and history making television.
Watch him in the movie Kelly's heroes
OMG I'm black and I grew up absolutely loving watching "All in the family" and "In the heat of the night" and never knew I was watching the same person..❤😂

@ronkostars Hes a realist and absolutely correct.
I do not funerals. I understand why we have them, but some cannot go to them. To decide she really didn't love him cause she didn't attend his funeral, is like stating I lived inside Jean Stapleton head. You didn't, and only she could validate your post.
I just wonder why post such a thing in the first place.
Still my all time favorite show. Nothing else came close after 50 years. I was 7 years old when it came out and 16 when Mike and Gloria moved to California. It was the first and probably only time I had ever gotten a lump in my throat and teary eyed from a tv show or movie.
I didn’t know the actors were leaving the show, so it was a surprise. I guess I thought I was never going to see them again either. 45 years later I met Rob Reiner while working on a film he directed. It was surreal.
It makes me extremely happy that Jean mentioned "Return To Me". That is one of my all time favorite movies. Carroll plays Minnie Driver's Irish grandpa and he is absolutely wonderful. It's such an underrated movie and deserves a lot of praise
Miss them both
..loved them dearly. Carol was a gentleman
Those were the days alright! Its amazing to see how much different the are to their amazing characters, they were truly GREAT actors.
Iconic Actors Indeed! It is so lovely to see Mr O'Connor smile and laugh in comparison to his character Archie Bunker. Sweet!
I used to watch this show every Sunday night at my grandparents house after Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom. I wonder if Carroll and Jean understood how deeply seeing them hugging touched so many of us.
Carroll will always remind me of my darling grandfather. Love them both, and Jean too! Absolute legends both of them.
Hello sue
Probably one of the very best shows ever on TV. "Edith & Archie" are American Icons.
I am almost crying right now.
Yep. Now I am.
They remind me so much of my Granddaddy.
He passes away at 94 years old back in 2014.
I can hear his laughter as well, as someone else stated.
I grew up in my Granddads house hearing the voices of Jean and Carroll every weeknight.
All in the Family, Hee-Haw, and The Lawrence Welk show.
I miss those days.
Times were so much simpler.
XO.... 🤍
One of my alltime favorite shows. In my opinion, one if the best sitcoms of any time.
Brings back childhood memories. Wonderful memories. Times were so simple back then. Such amazing actors. May they RIP.
There was never a ‘simple time’. Educate yourself about history.
I loved All in the Family. Such a great sitcom. These 2 made the show successful.
I remember when Donny and Marie announced that they were going to have them on their show. I was waiting in anticipation for this episode because I loved watching All in the Family as a kid. When I saw the show, I had a gut feeling it would be the last time I would ever see Carroll O’Connor and Jean Stapleton together again. As it turned out, my gut feeling was correct. What an amazing pair of actors!
I hope Carroll O’Conner’s son realized how blessed he was to have a father that loved him so much.
Obviously he didn’t bc he killed himself. Nobody who feels loved commits suicide.
Hugh O'Connor had a bad drug problem and I would guess he loved his parents greatly and felt like he let them down and fell into deep depression and felt like there was no way out. There was a time in my life were I was addicted and I know how it was... Just a guess I could be wrong of course.
I loved and still love this show til this day.
Me too. Grew up watching it in the 70's. Shows were real back then. None of this PC crap now. I loved Sanford and son too!
That show was classic. You could never have a show like that now. You would be offending too many people. Everybody is too sensitive. Sad
Yeah like Clint Eastwood said the pussy generation...gets too offended too often
Jennine J I see your point and it makes sense but do you thing one can be too sensitive and limit creative social commentary?
This one of the problems with our world today. People take things that were said in shows and movies decades ago and to this day say they hated them because they were racist and bigots. Yes, they were 100%! But did the producers glorify it? No! Who were the characters that always lost in the end? Whose opinions were almost always proven wrong, and the butt of everyones' jokes on the show?
Think about that. Then maybe some of you can actually enjoy shows like this and have a few laughs instead of always being negative.
It’s so sad! FAR TOO MANY SNOWFLAKES
J J nothin wrong with me.... I’m wondering what’s wrong with the ‘snowflakes’
That was one of the best comedy shows ever. R.I.P. to both of them.
I love seeing them together during this interview! It seems as though in real life she was more dominant and he was more submissive, lol. They work well together in both instances. They made my childhood a success. I'm so nostalgic right now.
Love this show and still watch it now!!!!!!!
Jean is such an elegant person. They're both very sophisticated, didn't expect that. I used to binge watch this when it used to air on tv land but never saw them out of character. I have a new appreciation for their acting after seeing this. Also, they're so humble and kind to one another, giving each other credit, love seeing that.
You are missed you beautiful souls RIP, they were my fathers favorite I can still here my dad laughing when the watch them RIP dad
I miss Donny and Marie, too!
Thank you so much for this beautiful interview!
The death of is son aged him so badly, and this was just a few years after that. I remember watching the civil trial in the 90's and he looked so broken then. Terrible tragedy.
I got a kick out of it.
You got a "kick" out of what??? His son's death? The terrible way it affected him?? How broken he looked?? SMH
The death of anybody's child can age them.
to me his look has improved with age ,, edith still looks almost the same as before , she still looks like a sweety pie
So sad.. yes
Probably Jean and Carroll heard "Can you do their voices" a zillion times. Look at Carroll's face when Marie asks!!!
Watching these two and the show they made together is a small part of what made my life good.

Love the chemistry, respect and admiration between the 2 actors!!!! It was obvious how happy they were to see each other!
What a beautiful interview. Lovely to see them interacting as themselves. ❤️❤️❤️
This woman must have got a ton of fan mail and I believe she actually took the time to read it; years ago I sent her a letter and forgot all about it until years later when I received a signed photo in the mail from her. If it took her that long to send the photo it's understandable she didn't have the time to write a letter to go along with it. I really appreciate she took the time and effort to mail me that photo, even if it was delegated to a secretary! RIP Jean.
Archie broke me in tears, in the " Edith death " episode, in Archie's place so intense that's how you know there was real love in them about each other unlike many actors who tolerate their fellow work companions for the pay., ❤ love them that's my tv grandparents lol
They are playing archie's place on tv now and I've been recording it a CD watching a few shows here and there and i'm almost scared to watch the show saying she died! I know i'm going to ball my eyes out! I love the show! They need to do a today's version of it!
That episode was tough. Beautiful but tough.
Jean was ready to leave the show. Asked to be written off. The person who created the show called and asked her to reconsider. He was distraught. Jean told him Edith was just a character and not a real person. His response? He said he li ed Edith like a real person.
Just seen it the other day myself

You run across things randomly with fond memories, and it takes me back to a more simple time. It's amazing how shows can take you back to a time in your life that you would ever think you would look back on and miss so terribly. The good quality tv shows that was made by fine actors, that really worked hard on their craft. It brings happy memories and sad all at the same time, for times gone by.
