Everything goes how you want it including how others react and how you feel. Once you actually go through with the actions its no longer fantasy but reality and there can be a large difference between how you fantasied about it vs the reality. I think it was a guy that shot up a movie theater, after killing multiple people get just sat and waited for police even though he still had plenty of ammo and was fully capable of taking more lives. To put it another way, imagine playing Call of Duty and thinking how much you enjoy it and then you join the military. Its going to be very different but for some people this is how they view killing others vs the reality of it.

Death penalty should be sentenced if someone killed out of cold blood, and according to how many years of life they stole from a person. Always highball and say 100 total years. If you kill a kid at 7 years old you stole 93 years of life he was 20ish so 93 years of life couldn’t be served in prison so execution would be a better option. It's so easy to judge people for their worst actions... and it's so easy to neglect all that led up to this moment. Who knows. Maybe he WAS a psychopath. Maybe he COULDN'T feel empathy the same way neurotypical people can. People around him sure didn't think he could be capable of something as horrible as this. His aunt thought he was peculiar, but the rest thought he was nice. So he was capable of masking his dark side. But that doesn't mean he couldn't have developed coping strategies with his stress that DON'T involve violence. Was this ever disclosed? Was he ever diagnosed? Stories like this make me wonder what could have prevented it... How he could have been helped, enabling him to keep these dark and disturbing habits as fantasies... rather than making them reality. And as evidenced by the video; he DIDN'T mean for them to be reality. But his perception of himself, the world around him, got so distant to him that he had trouble keeping reality and fantasy separate. That's not to say that his sudden change of heart and abandonment of the plan after the murder was because of a sudden stroke of conscience, I doubt he was capable of that... but EVERYONE needs a comfort zone. And he just threw that entire comfort zone, his whole support system, away. That would shake anyone's world, including a psychopath's (if he was one). Everyone deserves to be helped... Those that do not get helped soon enough end up doing awful things like this. He could have hugely benefited from therapy by a psychologist who skillfully helped him navigate his dark thoughts, what significance they hold to him, how he could allow these thoughts to just "be", and form a different point of view around them. That's how I'VE been helped (diagnosed with autism, got traumas and dark thoughts processed, I feel far better than I did before), and that's the kind of help I wish everyone could get... If only THIS was the primary focus of American society, instead of gearing up with as many guns as possible for the POSSIBILITY of an attacker... Weapons don't protect the mind. Just the SIGHT of a gun instills a sense of stress. You KNOW what this thing was designed to do. And if a troubled person like Trey gets his hands on them with the deep lying issues he struggles with... well... no gun control in the world can justify what happens next. Trey needed therapy... and he shouldn't have been a gun owner.
