DS 3 Crossback E-Tense - Luxury compact SUV? | Fully Charged

  • Jonny was invited over to the congestion capital of the world (Paris), by DS to view their latest electric version of the DS3 Crossback.
Whilst DS is the luxury side of Citroen, in the PSA group, Jonny can't help but compare it to the rest of the available EV's out there.
Will its 'luxury' and unique design elements help this car stand out in a world of higher range, same sector cars?

Loved this video, and I’ve watched every Fullycharged Episode going and have been an early supporter of the channel. Thank you Jonny, that was an excelled, balanced preview of the car and its pluses and minuses, something I’d been aware of and felt us EV evangelists have been guilty of over recent years is just shouting about how great EVs are whenever one was released. But that battle is now won, EVs are undoubtedly the future, and with the increase of them on the market its more and more important to be critical of them as well as praise them. Personally I think PSA has styling totally on point of late, and I’m loving what they’re putting out from an aesthetic perspective, but feel they get the tech wrong, frequently the wrong engines in their cars etc. Think this is a good solid step forward for PSA, but until they get a good skateboard design I can’t see me recommending one to people with that compromised space in the back and boot.

When he popped what is commonly referred to as a 'frunk' I was saddened to see the lack of space. I understand why they're doing it this way, as Jonny says it's to enable them to scale production and keep it all on the same line. It's like they're just dipping their toe in and not fully committing. I just hope that enough people buy PSA BEV anyway so they'll fully commit for the next production marques.

It’s a shame that the question about renewable/recycled materials was dodged, I think it shows a lack of understanding from the established players in the combustion engine market.
New brands coming through, operating on skate board platforms - offering more storage, more versatility - and using recycled/cruelty free materials is where we need to be heading.
    Great review!

    • @guseks8413
      @guseks8413 4 года назад +3

The reason they don't use skateboard platforms is because they want to make them on the same production line as the ICE/hybrid versions. The reason for that is simple, the market is not there yet when it comes to pure EVs and it wont be for a few years atleast. What you are saying about the recycled materials I agree with though new production of plastic materials needs to end soon, cruelty free materials I don't really know what it is but I guess leather and as long as people eat meat we might aswell use the skin, it would be a waste otherwise.

I wonder when companies will start getting creative again. Truly creative, as in designing the exterior around the benefits of the interior, making a car more functional with all the space electric components no longer need. Minivans would be amazing electrically - flat floor and no bonnet are easy. You could have so much interior space.
Instead we keep getting more and more stupid little crossovers with little interior space and a massive body on the outside.

Who knows if it will work though... historically all those brands have occupied similar space and are all much of a muchness. Will be interesting to see if they can separate them out into some kind of distinct pecking order like VAG have achieved.

It's just for people who care about ideas, ambition and flair. The design of the interior puts all the Germans to shame... Maybe Volvo are capturing a Swedish essence better that ds are capturing a French essence ... but not by much.
Rear foot room and 200 mile range won't worry the target audience. This is for Paris, London, Frankfurt, Milan... It's to get two people around town in comfort and style... for that it couldn't be more perfect.

Actually, I was thinking this could make a really nice / comfortable 'second car' - it hasn't got the range, but for popping into town *in comfort* (well, driver comfort, less so for passengers in the rear) this looks pretty good. Downside is mainly the price, as Johnny said - it's significantly more expensive than other second/town car offerings with similar range.

So much love for this channel! With regards to the car... Bit of a mixed bag. How can you suggest the brands main objective is a quality, luxurious item, when it has manual seats, a manual tailgate and the same looking plastics as seen from the French brands for years. £40k! Get out of here. Every Citroen I've ever traveled in has been comfortable, so you don't need to spend that sort of money. Perhaps the lower spec'd models are the sweet-spot in the range. I like the design, but that's about it.

I love the way Johnny dressed up to do the French DS report.
He is as always spot on. Driving a luxury car in levis tee shirt and trainers while very football is not what potential buyers want to see. If they are football then this car is too cheap for them and has far more refinement and taste that they would recognise anyway. Unless they are buying one for their gran.
A perfect spot on report as always. Good work.

You need to be patient with Citroens, the first 3 years they deprecate 50%, the next 15 years they will go down the next 40% and then they’ll start climbing to 2-5 times their original cost. Happened to DS, CX, 2CV, SM, Ami .. will happen to my 25yold XM, next to C6 and of course some day to the ETense.., or .. ? I love electric cars but it is very unwise to buy one privately in the next 3 years. Ask iPhone2 buyers.

Acceleration or sharpness isn't what Citroën is about. It's about comfort. Actually, even more than comfort it's about ease of driving. It's little details like a "dark" button on the center console that turns off all lights except the speedometer. Very nice while driving in the dark. It's about things you're doing semi-automatically while driving in other cars that get taken care of, or pushed to the background. It's about being able to drive for 10 hours without getting tired. You really need to drive one to understand it. And sure, even then it's possible this brand isn't for you, that's fine. We're all different and that gives the world color.

That touch screen responsiveness, I agree, is more important than a lot of auto manufacturers understand (ICE or EV). If it is slow to respond - especially in a top luxury car - it will be perceived as cheap quality. It needs to respond IMMEDIATELY to your touch, especially if you are accessing the screen while you're driving.

Ask them if you could take one for a test drive. The thing with Citroën is you need to experience it, and if possible for a longer drive, especially including highway driving. Sure, there's a decent chance it's still not for you, and that'd be fair. We're not all thesame. It's not just comfort even though that's utterly sweet, but also how everything works in the car. All the things you're normally doing while driving, which you don't consciously notice, you'll find they all just kinda are pushed to the background. It's not fast. It's not snappy. But you can drive it for 10 hours straight without getting tired.

I have done 12,000 miles now since March in my DS3 and in Eco mode and cruise set to 70mph I get 120 miles before desperately searching for a charger that works in the last 5 miles or range.
At 60mph I can get 160 miles, and thats in summer. In the rain at night and in winter the range will drop to 130 miles at 70mph. Not even 2 hours driving before I need to stop for an hour to charge due to the lack of 100kw chargers.

DS is a the PSA version to what Audi is to the VW group. It took 20 years to get Volkswagen and Audi into their respective premium positions, to make room for Skoda and Seat. Back in 1993 VW dramatically changed the Passat which started the Billions the Group has invested over the last 2 decades. The DS3 will be just 10 years old by the time the E-Tense arrive, so PSA still has a long way to go in separating their brands into the required entry-level to luxury brands. I personally think the e208 is about 4,000€ more than it should be. If the DS was sitting closer to 35k, I do wonder if it would set a better foundation to build upon with the current market mindset that DS is ultimately just a Citroen, just as people didn’t see Volkswagen as a premium brand 10 years after the efforts the VW Group had made to push their brands into a higher class segment.

Whatever this excellent review concludes.....it's great to see Citröen doing what they do best again, they really did lose their way for quite a few years.
Cars that are quirky, slightly 'mad' whilst being brilliant in many ways, flawed - but forgiven - and above all, different.
If you truly get what real Citroens were about and this car evokes memories of some truly inspired cars for a buyer they'll pay for this regardless of price. No one is forcing anyone to part with their cash. If you're someone who likes to show that they themselves as different to the herd for example.....
Great to see something visually individual, even if they aren't calling it what it is.

Form over substance then. The old DS5 was proper gorgeous inside (shame it's discontinued) with aircraft style chunky switches overhead. I think the Peugeot e208 is nicer inside and out than this DS and the 208 seems to enjoy better tech too? Anyway, it's great that more EVs are turning up and in this case - it's a pretty thing to look at.
