The truss rod adjustment would be done at the headstock area, but I think the neck joint 'pickguard' is covering the neck/body join itself, which would normally sit under a neck pickup & not be seen.
I've got this guitar, it sounds beautiful. It's a shame they discontinued it, because it is basically a Tom Delonge signature with a tone pot and not nearly as expensive, which was brilliant for Tom Delonge fans who wanted something better quality than the Epiphone TD signature.
@@brrr7938 I recently discovered the Bare Knuckle Pickup Nailbomb and absolutely love it. Plenty of output, but less harsh sounding. Matt Bellamy uses that pickup.
Chappers and Captain thank you very much for everything you guys have been teaching me... I got back to my music studies because of you guys! I wish I live near your store, so I could buy everything with you guys! Keep rocking! Thanks again!
like your reviews man,you guys just not talk about tone of the guitar but every part of the guitar even the small things in that guitar. great job dude!!
i have a midnight blue one with a trapeze tailpiece instead of the black stoptail. i also spent a few extra bucks for a proper hardcase. its a great axe but i find myself wanting to swap the black bits for gold hardware.
I also have one, but the 335. I think this review is pretty off base, I don't think there is a clear understanding of what this guitar is. This is a rock guitar, but you can get really different tones from it that are different from any other guitar I have. I play melodic rock solos on this guitar, as well as blues, and it sounds fantastic. I was inspired by seeing Joe Perry play his custom Lucille in concert. This is in that wheelhouse.
I think the plastic plate at the end of the neck is fore putting the wiring in. Considering it does not have any F holes. Or maybe they put it through the humbucker hole.
I've just ordered my Gibson ES 339. Then I saw the Gretsch White Panther. Yes, like a cut down Falcon, with a block across. Built in Japan. Any chance you would do a head to head test between the ES339/335 versus the Panther?
GIbson site says "Baked Maple fingerboard with Pearloid dot inlays" Hope that helps. It's funny, I used to hate the idea of having no neck pickup, but after getting an Epi Junior, I became quite comfortable with using the tone knob similar tones to the neck pickup if required.
the little plastic piece is just to cover a small hole where the neck sets into the body. that hole is usually covered by the neck pickup. same details on the tom delonge signature model
I'm surprised these are still this expensive compared to the LP studios, which have the trapezoid inlays. These have just the dots so I'm wondering if it's the gloss finish, although even some of the LPs have gloss. Or is it all relative to the 'standard' models?
The plate is there because normally there's a hole where the neck and body join on 335s and 339s so it's just to cover it up. Tom Delonge talked about it on his signature so..
"its a nice gigbag"... "do you reckon we could kik it out the window and see if it survives?" "last time we tried that it didnt work"... Best. Job. Ever
The tiny pickguard right next to the neck is to cover the hole where a pickup would go. Usually, that's where the neck pickup should be, but since there isn't one, there's a hole, so they cover it with that pickguard
I would have to say I love hollow bodies not only for their sound but also because Alex Lifeson played his 335 a whole lot. A hollow body by Epiphone would be my next buy, I think.
Those PUP's are Dirty Finger "Plus's". I think they only come on these guitars. I tried to buy some from Gibson & they aren't available retail.Too bad.
I have had the ES 335 Studio in Midnight Blue and it offers so much sound and a quality second to none. The price is really affordable for a Custom Shop instrument. So don't complain that the cheaper ES 339 Studio is too expensive. The regular ES 339 or 335 starts up to 1800€. Finally I sent it back to the musicstore because my Gibson Tom Delonge sounds so much better and more transparent in tone. The only thing that I can't go with on the ES335 Studio is the Trapeze Tailpiece.
Does anyone know what's sticking out of Rob's black 339? I'm guessing its some kind of wireless transmitter, but specifics would be helpful as I'm interested.
Tonight The World Dies Quick tip to save you a ton of money, buy an epiphone and switch out the pickups to whatever you would like, and save a grand or more. It won't be quite as good as a gibson, but it will still be fantastic, and if anyone makes fun of the logo being epiphone, you can plug it in and make them sorry they said anything :)
Alex Wright It's not as much about sound as it is about feel! I own both a Gibson and a Epiphone and the difference in how it feels to play them is huge! Prefer the feel of a Gibson so thats what i am going to get :) But thanks for the tip!
I've been waiting for this review to pop up since I saw the guitars in the background a few weeks back. What I expected, sound wise, and I'd say this guitar would be a modders delight. If you don't like the Dirty Fingers pickup it would be dead easy to replace with any type of humbucker you would want. Personally, I have a DiMarzio Super 2 that is sitting at home waiting for a guitar to go into & if I had 1 of these ES339 Studios, I'd replace the Dirty Fingers with the Super 2 & 300K pots.
I'm not sure that it IS a truss-rod cover. Because the cover on the headstock is also tortoiseshell. I think it's just a neck-join cover, which is a silly concept (but probably easy enough to remove)
This guitar stills in production? It's cute and a smaller and solid version of the Tom DeLonge model, perfect to take it everywhere, I love it (But not as much as Tom's ES-333)
I'm really impressed with these! Sounds like an amazing rhythm guitar. Great smashing pumpkins and 90's grunge tones I could see a Chris Cornell playing these on tour too.
The price is way out of my league, but I have to say I'm quite impressed with this guitar. For me it seems like it is very much the 'essence' of an electric guitar, in that like an acoustic it has one basic sound and it's up to you to get the rest out of it. It's a perfect guitar for an effects-based player too as the tone you get is a nice consistent blank canvas to build your effects sound from.
Ive worked Factories I ran whole shifts of people in large companies. And if people do not like there work environment it shows in quality. Gibson has had alot of people complain that work there and there are others who would dream of working at an American guitar Factory. Gibson is a far cry from what it was in the 80s. I had a beautiful 1984 White Gibson Les Paul Custom it was a quality instrument but i could never get used to the body shape.I love Strat shaped guitars Jacksons and Charvels.
Why would you pay $1500 for a basic opaque guitar with 1 decent humbucker in it... even if it has great hardware, at least put a white binding on it to make it stand out!
i think it should have been labeled "339 Junior" then had a normal looking stripped back 339 with 2 pups etc as the studio, like the les paul studio in comparison to the les paul standard.
I have this. Once you play it, you get it. Its kind of like the modern version of the Joan Jett Blackheart. (in a sense) Its stable, light, sustain forever, solid. People who want a 335 shouldnt buy it. But people who actually get what it is, its perfect for them.
The problem with this guitar is, for the price, you could get something with 2 pickups that would sound better and have more resale value if you fall out of love. I have a Squier Hello Kitty strat that I dropped a Satriani signature pickup into. Total investment less than $400US. These guitars have their place, but at that price point it seems like a bad call.
Yeah, I know, It was actually arguing the interpretation of "a tortoiseshell truss-rod cover and neck-joint cover", suggesting they are different things and the one at the bridge is not in fact the truss-rod cover. And I already had the page open, but thanks. :D
Basically this guitar is a stripped down, not nearly as expensive version of Tom DeLonge's sig 335, right down to the "pickup route cover" at the neck pickup area and the dirty fingers pickup.
It's one of the cheaper guitars that Gibson do. For some it may be expensive for a guitar, but for an American built Gibson guitar, it's actually not bad.
Ok this is Right from Gibsons website: The ES-339 Studio carries a Tune-o-matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece, and high-quality Grover™ Rotomatic® tuners, all in black chrome. There’s no pickguard, but a tortoiseshell truss-rod cover and neck-joint cover lend an alternative touch of class. The controls carry black Top-Hat knobs. So its a Trus Rod Cover I think they could had done this part differently its hideous and cheap looking!
Love your vids guys, always cool to see a new one show up in my feed. Keep working hard, or not so hard, I'll keep watching.
Hi, I have this guitar but the pickup is too brutal for me, which one do you recommend I put on to play something more like blues or hard rock?
@@brrr7938 I recently discovered the Bare Knuckle Pickup Nailbomb and absolutely love it. Plenty of output, but less harsh sounding. Matt Bellamy uses that pickup.

great job dude!!
i would love to see a tour around the place were you shoot the video's, like a backstage view :) would be cool!
It's like folks at Gibson thought "they're gonna put a shitload of stickers on this thing anyway, so why bother with giving it a nice finish".
Nitrocellulose isn't a nice finish?
Rob... please tell me where you got your grey distressed Superman T-Shirt from? I've been looking for one but can't find it anywhere. Thanks.
i have a midnight blue one with a trapeze tailpiece instead of the black stoptail. i also spent a few extra bucks for a proper hardcase.

I love you guys, so much fun watching your videos. It makes me want to come visit you in the UK! Hell make me a deal and ship me a guitar in the US.
Love the Banter between them!!!
quiet sounded amazing on that guitar
Cause I fell on black days. Fell on on on. Black days. What a treat Rob.
GIbson site says "Baked Maple fingerboard with Pearloid dot inlays"
Hope that helps.
It's funny, I used to hate the idea of having no neck pickup, but after getting an Epi Junior, I became quite comfortable with using the tone knob similar tones to the neck pickup if required.
awsome sp tones rob! :)
Just got it for a day. I was suspicious at first but in the end more versatile than expected. Blues, rock and punk.... Nice fiinish and sound.
the little plastic piece is just to cover a small hole where the neck sets into the body. that hole is usually covered by the neck pickup. same details on the tom delonge signature model

You need to check with US retailer for that. UK price and US prices are going to be different on most products.
The plate is there because normally there's a hole where the neck and body join on 335s and 339s so it's just to cover it up. Tom Delonge talked about it on his signature so..
Am I right in thinking you could pur chase 2 ML 2's for the same monies?
"its a nice gigbag"... "do you reckon we could kik it out the window and see if it survives?" "last time we tried that it didnt work"...
Best. Job. Ever
Just waited 13 minutes to hear them play it clean, and they didn't once play it clean. Here's my review on your review: it was horrible.
They never play any guitar clean. The distortion ruins every review and makes me wanna press next.
Thank you very much. Going to listen to it now.
that whole lotta love riff *-* sounds amazing!!
The tiny pickguard right next to the neck is to cover the hole where a pickup would go. Usually, that's where the neck pickup should be, but since there isn't one, there's a hole, so they cover it with that pickguard
Ok
How hard would it be to buy a bit of pickguard material to the colour of your choosing, cut it to shape and then drill a few holes?
I would have to say I love hollow bodies not only for their sound but also because Alex Lifeson played his 335 a whole lot. A hollow body by Epiphone would be my next buy, I think.
Could you guys do a review of the EVH striped series??
and what about Godin guitars? I just had a 3/4 years old Godin Summit.. sick for the price (i paid 300 euros for an used one)
I want a neck pickup... and if its a baked maple fret board that would be great.
That sounds so damn good, what settings are you rocking on the Rockerverb Captain Chappers?
Hi, I have this guitar but the pickup is too brutal for me, which one do you recommend I put on to play something more like blues or hard rock?
Hell yeah, Rob! More Pumpkins and Soundgarden riffage!
play this guitar through semi-clean (Vox chime?) and roll of the tone knob pleasee
What was that beginning riff? sounded amazing
Please do a review of the Peavey Vyper VIP amps!
So this thing is essentially a Gibson Tom Delonge without F-holes? And with 2 controls?
No f-holes? Does that make it reduce feedback? & distortion?
Those PUP's are Dirty Finger "Plus's". I think they only come on these guitars. I tried to buy some from Gibson & they aren't available retail.Too bad.
I want one of those... i'll buy one some day if i end up finding one because i don't think they'll make them for a long time.. sounds fucking awesome

So the Memphis 339 is a good guitar for blues/jazz, right?
can't believe that's 1k pounds Gibson is unreal

Chappers! Captain! There's a new Gibson ES 335 Studio with f-holes and 57 classics! You guys should review it!
It's one of the most beautiful guitars i have seen! Love it in vintage sunburst
Yeah, actually since I posted that comment, I have purchased one and I'll say that it feels great to play and it sounds great
damn, i wish i had the money to buy one

this thing would feel right at home in the stoner rock realm
i love the looks of the blue one. not ugly beautiful!
kindling yes, but will it Blend?
bay area soundgarden thing??? rob I love that you mention my home but soundgarden and the grunge is from seattle
@jakelus71 there must be, cuz I am drooling over the blue 339
You guys have to do a review of the Epiphone and/or Gibson Tom DeLonge Signature ES-333
hey do gibson still do the more double pickup 335 studio and 339 the ebony or sunburst one
I love this guitar. Just one question Rob, when are you going to record another solo album?
@Brandon Ramos they only stopped using rosewood for a few months dude
I've been waiting for this review to pop up since I saw the guitars in the background a few weeks back.

I actually think its a pretty cool model. Something like a 335 shape but for more rock/alternative/punk music. I dig it.
10:40 yup it works with the tone rolled off, but you really need an insane fuzz pedal for that
Plus I think it looks kind of kickass. I like that flat black theme.
you made my day with that smashing pumpkins riff:)
Search Gibson ES-339 Studio I cant put the link up its way too large.
What song is that @ 11:58 ?
Thank you so much for this!!!!
Gibson should make a maple coloured or tele blonde coloured version of this!! or white......
I'm really impressed with these! Sounds like an amazing rhythm guitar. Great smashing pumpkins and 90's grunge tones I could see a Chris Cornell playing these on tour too.

what's the riff he plays at 9:25

The plate at the end of the 'board is to hide the neck tenon.
can you do a competition on this guitar? it is literally my dream guitar! but i could never afford it :(
10:38 gotta love that smashing pumpkins!!
Please, do a review of the Gibson Les Paul Signature T :) !!!!
Guys, please review some Gibson SGs. The last time you reviewed SGs was two years ago, so please do a Gibson SG video!
I was thinking the same thing! Maybe it takes a little extra time choosing and setting the amp :S
That little plastic piece at the end of the neck is listed on the Gibson website as a "tortoiseshell neck joint cover" which sounds very odd
Why would you pay $1500 for a basic opaque guitar with 1 decent humbucker in it... even if it has great hardware, at least put a white binding on it to make it stand out!
down to £599 now at andertons ...would ya ????
i just have
Needs to come in more colors like Cherry, and TV yellow......but I do like it.
dave grohl uses a 335 type guitar
Looks and sounds badass
i think it should have been labeled "339 Junior" then had a normal looking stripped back 339 with 2 pups etc as the studio, like the les paul studio in comparison to the les paul standard.

What's the point of a semi hollow with no sound holes
to make it lighter maybe?
Its sounds warmer
Uh, to reduce feedback more than anything, though the Smells Like Teen Spirit demo still had some degree of intentional feedback.
For the record, the Gibson Lucille also doesn't have holes for the same reason IIRC.
No sir, I meant a treble (or bridge) pickup.
REALLY cool guit!
The problem with this guitar is, for the price, you could get something with 2 pickups that would sound better and have more resale value if you fall out of love. Do a comparison of this and the Tom Delonge. Seem to be incredibly similar.
Basically this guitar is a stripped down, not nearly as expensive version of Tom DeLonge's sig 335, right down to the "pickup route cover" at the neck pickup area and the dirty fingers pickup.
its designed for a black keys or white stripes kind of sound. a dirty blues type of sound.
It's one of the cheaper guitars that Gibson do. For some it may be expensive for a guitar, but for an American built Gibson guitar, it's actually not bad.
Do the collectors choice 8 that is behind rob
Good plectrum throw Mr Chapman!
Bring back the longer intro please!!!!
