As a 'five fret wonder' I had the Epiphone version of this, and I still reckon it was the best 'rhythm' guitar I ever owned.

I remember reading Fil of “Solo-Dallas” the Schaeffer Replica guy once played Angus Young’s Gibson SG once say something similar. “Nothing special. A guitar. I tried quickly some soloing licks, and several times Angus’ classic vibrato on it. It worked, but no better than how it could come out of many other guitars. Surprise? I still don’t know. Should we be surprised…? Maybe not. We all know it’s more the guitar player than the guitar, don’t we?”

I always thought Gibsons were poor value for what you paid. I've had a few over the years.
Last year I had some spare money and bought a 2008 Custom Shop ES345 and a new Les Paul Standard 50s model. Both are very, very good guitars but are not 10 times or twice as good as other guitars I have that cost a fraction.
I've been playing guitar since 1967 and am so delighted that players today can get really good guitars at very reasonable prices.
I've since sold the ES345 for a £500 profit, so maybe there is a reason to buy Gibson?😀

I think we learn in time that , fundamentally, guitars are guitars - having a gibson fulfills teenage dreams but, in the modern age, we know that they are actually no better and often less satisfying than instruments costing a fraction of the price - the more that reality sinks in , the less the shares in Gibson are going to be worth

I've got an Epi 339. It's a great guitar, very different from my Epi Les Paul and sounds and looks the business.

Another stunning video big fella, that piece you played was very PEG and hopefully just on the right side of homage to keep the copyright wolf's from your door , I wouldn't be surprised if Mr Fagen didn't give you a call !!. PEACE and LOVE to everyone.

As always an excellent solo. To me it sounded similar to a Steely Dan style lead. Have you ever done a vlog on how to solo like _______(e.g. Jeff “Skunk” Baxter, Rick Derringer, et al) some of the session musicians that SD used on their songs? Can only speak for myself but I’d like to see you take it on.

Yes, I agree there are diminishing returns as prices increase, you certainly don't get 10 x the playing experience for 10 x the money

my mate has a 335, his son has a harley benton 335 that his dad has set up to near perfection (no replacement parts) there's nowt in it - both play and sound great and both have finish imperfections ,the HB is a bit lighter and has a thinner neck (positives for me) but is slightly more prone to feedback, but they are of comparable quality pretty much.

Spend a little more time with it. You'll love it. Great sounds can be had.

Hi John, that guitar sounds wonderful. I think you're right, there's far more to buying a custom shop guitar than just the instrument itself. At the end of the day though it's pretty much only other guitar players who are impressed if they saw you at a gig playing it.

Hmm, it didn’t sound as fat as I was expecting. I’m not sure if that was the guitar, the amp or the speakers on my iPad (although usually they do a pretty good job. You mention custom shop guitars as status symbols but I think a guitar at any price can be the one that “speaks” to you. If it’s an expensive one that’s when you end up selling some others (ask me how I know!). Has your friend David got a 336? I’d be very interested to hear what one of those sounds like.

Gibsons as a teenager unaffordable and as an adult a disappointment. They do sound nice but just no improvement in quality. It’s embarrassing I’ve got guitars that blow them out of the water for setup, playability, fit and finish. Sire Les Paul is definitely built to a higher standard and if you’re not into treble bleeds you could rewire and put in fancy pickups and still be half the price.
Don’t mention PRS SE, Chapman pro series, Ibanez to name a few.
I have 4 Gibsons but it’s been a ballache to get them how I want them to play dealing with sharp frets ridiculously high action and other issues. Luckily i didn’t get one with a pubic hair under the lacquer! yep it’s out there on RUclips.
They do sound nice plugged into a Marshall and a junior with a P-90 just does it for me.
    That’s my rant about Gibson.
Great video 👍 I look forward to seeing the head to head against the Sire.

Do I sense a wee bit of GF?(Guitar Fatigue) She's a beauty of a semihollow for those who don't want the full-sized 335. Pity you aren't tabbing out Mike Oldfield's Tabular Bells!
