Oats work perfectly! I have used rolled oats for years but now I whiz them in the food processor to make oat crumbs for a finer texture. Half ground beef and half ground turkey works great too.
Oh, this is so nostalgic! My husband had three specialties: pot roast, Bolognaise sauce, and meat loaf. It's as if you had watched him make it! No one else we knew used oats, and I think they give it such a lovely open texture. Catsup & Worcestershire sauce, perfect. His secret, though, was his 'kitchen sink' additions. A couple of lonely mushrooms? A grated carrot? Half a red pepper forgotten in the veg drawer? But the most memorable was the night he tossed in some leftover crushed pineapple - it was absolutely, surprisingly, delicious. Thanks, Lisa!
Hi Lisa! I made this last evening for dinner. I haven’t made meat loaf for years. I like to eat a primarily vegetarian diet but my husband was recently diagnosed with low iron so, in addition to supplementation, I’ve been using red meat again, occasionally. I followed the recipe exactly and it turned out perfectly. My husband and adult daughter’s reactions made my day. I own your cookbook, have been a subscriber to your videos for quite a while and really enjoy your presentation and content. I can always be sure things will turn out just as they’re supposed to. Thanks for the inspiration and keep up the great work!
I cooked this recipe for dinner tonight and it was a hit. Full of flavour, moist and light at the same time. I served it with roast potatoes and mixed salad. The family loved it. Thank you so much.
Thank you for sharing your recipes! They have truly been a blessing for a mom who has a daughter who, all of a sudden, can’t tolerate gluten or dairy anymore. ❤
Suggestion: For the glaze use Balsamic Vinegar instead of Worchestire Sauce. Include Red pepper flakes and a little yellow mustard. The smell is outstanding and tastes even better.
I haven't made meat loaf in years, I'll have to try this recipe. I used to stuff the inside with some pepperjack cheese so that it melts inside during baking. Great stuff.
Meatloaf is such a favorite in our house,my husband loves to make meatloaf sandwiches the next day too-I’ve always used bread crumbs so using oats will be a nice change, definitely going to make this😋thank you Lisa!!!adding this to my menu ❤
I do a very similar meatloaf however I put the onion and the garlic in a blender with the smallest amount of water & blend. No crunchy pieces of onion or no need to sautee. Just the way my mom taught me :)
Thank you for this recipe. It’s very similar to my late mother’s recipe, which my husband loved. I never really got her recipe from her, and when she passed at the age of 97 in 2019, my hubby and I figured we’d never have mom’s delicious meatloaf again. Now I can surprise my husband with this recipe, which looks delish and so much like my dear mother’s recipe. 💕
thank you for your YES (it is) "Best Ever Meatloaf" Not only is your recipe outstanding - It has also changed how I cook it. And your way is the best. Purchased the instant oats - something that has not previously entered my pantry. Assembled all the other ingredients. And I cooked it at the temperature you provided For the time you recommended. PS, : I will never again cook at the higher temperature I used to use _ your temperature and time to cook AND resting it resulted in a lovely outcome
Ok so I made this but hear me out. I was so sick (monthly sickness) I barely followed the recipe here. It was more like a spirit guide. I added breadcrumbs and cracker bits instead of oats. I added whatever spices I had on hand. Used barbeque sauce as my glaze. I measured nothing. I didn't have worcestshire sauce - used gravy browning instead for colour. Even though I was basically a zombie and did my own thing, it came out good! I am quite impressed.
Made this tonight and it was delicious. My husband does not like onions and the onions came out a bit crunchy. Can I sauté them before adding them to the meatloaf?
I have always used oats in my meatloaf but I cook it in my stoneware mini loaf pans. Also I usually add straight up tomato sauce for the top but I'm tempted to try your glaze on it !
I just love your recipes and meatloaf is my husband's favorite dinner. I do need a healthier turkey version as I'm trying to add healthier proteins to my meals. Thank you!!!
It should be removed from the baking pan immediately then let it rest or should I rest it in the baking dish with oozing grease? I don't know? Thanks Lisa!!!
Your cousin M told me about your channel, love it! Subscribed and following. Great job and well done! PS I wear gloves when making meatloaf bc once I had a hangnail and bacteria got in.
OMGOODNESS!!! I was looking for a meatloaf recipe from you!! I'm looking forward to trying this one. I eat paleo: any other suggestions for oat alternatives??
There are thousands of "best ever" meatloaf recipes. In my lifetime I've made hundreds of variations - not following any recipes or measuring ingredients. I get a different meatloaf every time; some better than others, but always a hit! The ONLY constant I've adhered to is 1 egg for every 1 pound of ground MEAT (beef, bison, venison, turkey, etc., etc....)
Hi Lisa! As you said there are countless meatloaf recipes and I have my 'go to', but I'll have to give your's a try. Oh, speaking as a forest fire control guy, and a fire tower operator, I love the Smokey Bear ruler that you used.
I hate to say this but your title is a mouthful. I think in the future something along the lines of "recipe for the best glazed meatloaf of all time." Would sound and work better. I know you probably put a lot of time in titles but in my opinion consistency and clarity make the best titles. Then again, I am here.
I have a recipie that calls for the envelope onion soup. Two times many years apart, I have gotten sick with diverticulitis after eating it. Im not sure if its the hamburger or the envelope stuff. I would love to try this recipe, but also a little scared. My daughter will not eat turkey. Im not sure what else to try it with? Ground chicken?
GREAT RECIPE, LOVED THE "EXTRA" THINGS YOU PUT IN, SOUNDS DELICIOUS,,,I TOO GREW UP EATING A LOT OF MEATLOAF, PROBABLY ONCE A WEEK, MEATLOAF MONDAYS, FRIED CHICKEN FRIDAY'S, SUNDAYS😊😀
How do you guys feel about turkey meatloaf? Should I add a recipe for that in the future as well? Let me know! xo - Lisa
I love it!! More recipes like this, please!!

You're awesome.
Instead of oatmeal I use cooked quinoa and my family totally loves it. Thanks for the recipe.
Great tip❤
Great idea!
Oh good to know! Thanks for sharing.
Great idea! How much quinoa do you add for two pounds of meat?
we made a half batch for the two of us tonight, and we are it all!!!! amazing! and now it is on our constant rotation. thank you!

Worchester sauce is a magic ingredient!
It really is!!
Thank you for sharing your recipes! They have truly been a blessing for a mom who has a daughter who, all of a sudden, can’t tolerate gluten or dairy anymore. ❤
Looks like there’s a meatloaf in my future. A turkey meatloaf recipe would be great.
A turkey meatloaf is next on my list!
Suggestion: For the glaze use Balsamic Vinegar instead of Worchestire Sauce. Include Red pepper flakes and a little yellow mustard. The smell is outstanding and tastes even better.
Beautiful!
Place a bay leaf under the loaf for added aroma!
I haven't made meat loaf in years, I'll have to try this recipe. I used to stuff the inside with some pepperjack cheese so that it melts inside during baking. Great stuff.
This looks and I would bet tastes wonderful! Thanks for the great recipe! ♡

What a great and different recipe. Thank you! Now waiting for your turkey meatloaf.

Very similar to my base recipe for meatloaf but I like the addition of parsley and Worcestershire sauce and that glaze. Can’t wait to try this out!
That is a perfect meatloaf! 😍
It's so moist and delicious! Can't wait for you to try this.
Super simple, and looks delicious!

Lis!!! You know this will be on rotation in my household. Thank you for the detailed recipe and what looks like a flavorful, moist meat loaf!
Can't wait for you to try this meatloaf!!
Thanks! Keep the healthy videos coming
Thanks for all your support!
I caramelize the onions first for deeper more flavorful flavors.
Great idea! Thanks for sharing.
Did it first time in my life. Super easy and tasty. Difficult to do wrong. Btw if you have eggs intolerance you can just skip them. Still works fine.
Made this tonight and it was delicious. My husband does not like onions and the onions came out a bit crunchy. Can I sauté them before adding them to the meatloaf?
You can give it a light saute!
I have always used oats in my meatloaf but I cook it in my stoneware mini loaf pans. Also I usually add straight up tomato sauce for the top but I'm tempted to try your glaze on it !
Do let me know how you end up liking the glaze!
Thank you!!! This looks so good! Making this tomorrow!!! ❤
Hope you love it!
Hello from Salisbury, England 👋🏻! I’ve made this for dinner tonight, I can’t wait to try it 😁
Looked so good we're having meatloaf tomorrow. Only it will be VENISON with a touch of sweet Italian sausage or pork breakfast sausage.
Sounds EXCELLENT!
I’ll try this next time ,thanks 😊
Hope you enjoy!!
I just love your recipes and meatloaf is my husband's favorite dinner. I do need a healthier turkey version as I'm trying to add healthier proteins to my meals. Thank you!!!
Looks yummy; thank you.
I will try the meatloaf but can I use the ground chicken instead of beef?
I'd say use ground pork or ground turkey instead for more flavor!
It should be removed from the baking pan immediately then let it rest or should I rest it in the baking dish with oozing grease? I don't know? Thanks Lisa!!!
You can do either or!
Your cousin M told me about your channel, love it! Subscribed and following. Great job and well done! PS I wear gloves when making meatloaf bc once I had a hangnail and bacteria got in.
Welcome to the Downshiftology community! Hope you enjoy this recipe 😀
That looks delicious
Absolutely 🙂
This looks so good. My turkey meatloaf without a glaze looks so boring in comparison! I can't wait to try yours!
Great recipe! Can you also do a recipe for ground chicken or turkey?
I'd say ground turkey is okay, but the flavor will be a bit more mild.
Will try this one thanks
Hope you enjoy!
I can't wait to try this out! 😋
Hope you love this new recipe!
This looks delicious!❤
Am foing to give this a go Lisa, but any time I've ever tried meatloaf it crumbles on cutting even after letting it rest for an hour!
Do let us know how this recipe turns out for you!!
This looks amazing! I have been adding oats to my meatloaf for years. I like your take on the glaze / sauce and I can't wait to try it.
Can't wait for you to try this 😀
I got your book and love it. Perfect for a senior lady.
Glad you love your new book! 😀
I have noticed that so few recipes use rice. I cant imagine meatloaf without it. It is the way my mother and grandmother used to make it. Try It 👍
I love meatloaf and will definitely try this. I make your baked chicken all the time and my family loves it!
Thank you! I’m going to make this tonight! I’m always looking for new ways to cook ground beef.
Can't wait to hear how yours turns out 😀

Looks so, so good but I think it needs more sauce (my personal preference).
You would think by my age I would have cooked a few meatloafs. Well no. I landed in this channel because of fresh ingredients.👍
Fantastic! Can’t wait to try it!
Can't wait for you to make this one! 😀
