@@heterosapien6357 Even keeping up with inflation, there hasn't been a console this expensive in previous generations (with or without the disc drive). Like it's not even close, it's kind of egregious.
Edit: Save for the more expensive PS3, and the less expensive one compared against PS5 Pro with no disk reader.

It’s weird to me that the main selling point is replaying old games with enhancements when those old games are most likely on disc on my shelf

Tbf, I think most people won't notice unless they have a 120hz 4k capable tv. That's where the magic is. It's certainly a game changer going from 60hz to 120hz, but the investment is quite big.

That's why I mostly got physical Nintendo games I can play or sell whenever and PC games from GOG which are DRM free, so I can save the installer.
yeah I am done with consoles when this happens. Go back and add to my previous console/handhelds collection. I am just so sad as I have been gaming since I was a kid and truly enjoy gaming and collecting! I want a case to display and goodies like posters, plushies, stickers, keychains and so on. It is so much fun 😌What does digital offer? Expensive air. Yup nothing better than holding your invisible game....

If they had given this monstrosity a disc drive and backwards compatibility all the way back to PS1, we probably wouldn’t be having this conversation…

@@mrnukes797 I think just about every Sony console since the PS2 has supported PS1 compatibility, but I can't personally say if PS4 or PS5 can just play it if you pop in the disc.
PS2 is a bit trickier for sony. PS3 could initially do it, then stopped and at the end of the PS3's life cycle they started doing half-baked ports as PS2 Classics

While it’s true it’s a little more expensive to build a PC or have a prebuilt, you have more stuff to do there than just gaming. This price is just awful. Sony wants that 5% minority buying this. Some being scalpers

Nintendo has the path clean to launch a Switch 2 comparable or even superior to PS4 for 400$.

So the scalpers in my area have decided to buy every single disc drive that is in stock so that they can scalp those instead.

Once consoles get this expensive, the consoles NEED good exclusives. You can get a decent PC for a similar price and play most games, granted not at max settings, but you can still play games.

Bro consoles usually run games at lower than low (available low settings). Like RDR2 as an example. Console pulls _every_ trick on the book to keep up with PC.

As long as you can play a game on PC and it be playable and look good enough, that’s all that matters to me.

Another issue is that games take way too long to make now. They’re going to charge this price for something that will have what? 5 new games during its entire life because it takes companies 6 years to make one game these days? This is why I stick to retro gaming and Nintendo now, the way the video game industry is headed is way too Hollywood and leaves a horrible taste in my mouth.
pc is pretty good, i had this computer for 8 years and only needed a new graphics card after 7 years. it was 350$ but it was worth it since now i can play most games nowadays

Rant time: it's not even about the price. What exclusives does PS5 have anyway? they care so much about graphics and fidelity, but we're getting to the point where you have to squint to see any differences. They keep trying to make these AAA games that are expensive, take too long to make, and for what? the best game that Sony has put out in a long time was Astro Bot. A game that doesn't need a $700 console. Sony ffs stop chasing graphics and start chasing FUN.
And honestly it's no wonder how Nintendo win the console war, they have so many good games you can play on the go and they sales are high compared to Sony or Microsoft it's kinda funny

i am just gonna say this here as a pc gamer; they shot themselves in the foot by making their exclusives to pc. if they kept their games to a console they wouldve probably convinced more to get a pro but since they don’t even have games besides 1 or 2 like demon souls. even astrobot/stellar blade 2 amazing games there’s been talks of it going to pc. the ps4 was such a good system that most weren’t on pc and it made it to have GAMES

Even then, there’s no real point to play Demon’s Souls remake if you own the original game since the remake is using the same code and messes up the art direction.

Just a side note. The conversion to USD, doesn't matter. The "buying power" isn't equivalent, you have to pay over a thousand in Austrailia and Japan. Like you said, it's around $1500. Conversions don't really mean anything for anyone that isn't American, the buying power just isn't the same because of what you can make (minimum wage)

I'm from Europe I tried to build this PC and it ended up being $638 before tax. (Yes, we have some sales now) So I threw in an Xbox Controller, basic keyboard, mouse and Windows license and it's still 40 bucks cheaper than the PS5 Pro price in Europe!!!
*The PS5 Pro has the same processor as the regular PS5. In real tests, it is similar to the Ryzen 5 3600. The Ryzen 5 5500 has the same performance, but is a generation younger. Yes it's very slow by today's standards, but so is the PS5 Pro. Of course we can use a better processor, but so can the PS5 Pro. But it didn't. But they still charge $700! Shameless!
700 US dollars for the console, 30 US dollars for the stand, 80 US dollars for the disc drive oh wait scalpers got them first and now you have to pay about double the price of that, and probably another 70 US dollars for Kingdom Hearts 4 if it doesn't end up on PlayStation 6 instead.

Ps5 is 4 years old now though. The price should've went down. People keep mentioning the disk drive because the original digital ps5 was $400. This is basically a better ps5 digital except now it costs almost double... for a 4 year old console.

A browser extension called Return RUclips Dislike. The count isn't 100% accurate, but I believe it includes the people who disliked with the extension.
What made them believe that this is something consumers are going to buy?

The PS5 os actually just using modified AMD Zen 2 CPUs. Which os heavily discounted as they built and put the CPU Die in themselves,not pre built like the consumers get.
Really, they get a lot of things much cheaper than us and the fact the components aren't better says a lot, using Zen 2 because it's cheap and can be sold in bulk.
A few years ago my PS4 account got hacked and with it I lost all of my digital games including Kingdom Hearts 3 + Re:mind and Persona 5 Royal. I had to go out and re buy the physical copy both games including any DLC lost. I swore I'd never buy a game without a physical copy after that. AND THEY HAVE THE GALL TO MAKE THE PRO DIGITAL ONLY!

People have been doing that for decades. Sony pulled a similar stunt when they tried to sell PS3 at 600$ when it first released and the outrage from customers forced to sell it and subsequent models at almost half price. And Sony is going learn that lesson again.

What even worse is they’ve already allowed scalpers to buy all the disc drives, so anyone mug enough to buy a pro won’t be able to get a disc drive
I think the disk drive being top 10 is scalpers and not regular costumers. But that is just speculation
Sony recently went ahead and removed Concord from everyone's libraries. Yes, the servers are already dead, but the fact that they can just do it willy-nilly even for people who bought the game is scary. It re-emphasizes that you don't really "own" a game if you buy it digitally. The fact that they aren't having the disk drive in their premium console shows that they see the future as an all-digital one which is not a good sign.
I also think it was a bold move to state clearly in the presentation that players prefer higher framerates over better graphics (3/4 times), and then go and make a new expensive device that improves graphics instead of improving the thing that's actually bottlenecking games' framerates most of the time - the CPU. They did their market analysis and just went "Nah" XD
Hey, those AMD Zen 2 are probably dirt cheap and easy to customize to make it 'up to spec'. Lets not forget GDDR6 is obviously faster than DDR5 and that latency? It's fine, don't worry about it. 16GB is enough to share between the CPU and GPU.
I have to assume as Sony gets the parts themselves, not completed, obviously, it's even cheaper. They normally sell the console at a loss. Imagine if it was 600 still or 550 or something. I assume people would probably be happy, especially with the stand and disc drive, maybe two PS5 controllers. Make it worth it.
No kidding. I will take performance most days over graphics, unless I have a powerful enough machine to balance both. For example, baulders gate 3 on steam deck, I am running mostly with low graphics to improve the performance, and it still looks really good. The games just have to be developed with that in mind.
The price of the PS5 pro in actuality isn't 700$, it's over 800 with the parts that should be included from scratch and PS+ that is necessary to use this thing online.
I refuse to look at a system that expects me to buy the things it should have installed already. As a person who can't even afford the ps5 normally, this "pro" version is pouring salt onto the grave that is my gaming hobby.

Sony has shown that they have the ability to delete your own digital copies of games from your own console without your consent. And I don't just mean they take it down from the store, I mean they can literally go into your Playstation and just uninstall your shit and look at everything you have on the console.
The PS5 Pro has no disc drive out the box, so no physical. Only digital.

The important phase is "temporary licence". But you are 100% correct, Cynical. It seems a new console with no disc drive has finally woke people up. Many great games that people still love to play are being lost to the ages. If a PS1, PS2 and PS3 can run on PC through emulation. Sony has no excuse with backward compatibility. It's clear they are doing this so people re-buy the games on next generation console. I have Kingdom hearts 1.5 and 2.5 on both PS3 and PS4 since PS3 wouldn't work on PS4. And of course, I want to own the stuff I buy. Not have as a temporary licence.

I think having no trade off between framerate and fidelity is great but tbh i barely see the difference, and I think most ppl can wait for the next gen to upgrade their old games via backwards compatibility
some games are still gonna be in 30 FPS. this console is easily worth 599$ but it's 100 more. It's a total cash grab and it's Embarrassing for sony fans.
This makes me be all the more glad I went for the X-Box Series X since it both costs less and actually has a disk drive. Helps that you have a MUCH better chance at playing older games compared to both Dony and even Nintendo.

Haven't even had a reason to get a normal PS5. Theres maybe 2-3 games that I want to play that are exclusives that I cant run on my PC because of hardware limitations ex: Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart. This is MORE of a reason to not bother getting a PS5 pro either due to its price I rather just get a new PC.
I'm sorry, once KH4 releases I won't have a reason to purchase another Sony console, IF it's a PS exclusive upon launch.

The lack of disc drive isnt the issue. From a manufacturing standpoint, it makes more sense to make 1 system and a small attachment for those that want physical (myself included), rather than 2 whole systems where 1 could be in danger of not selling that much clogging up warehouses if theres an error in judging the market. The problem is that the Pro is still too expensive despite that fact, even though it should drive costs down.
with this gen Sony told All their customers of which over Half are Still on PS4 to just go and buy PC and don't even bother with PS6

I just don't get the reason behind developing PS5 if they aimed to eventually make a PS5 pro. That is the definition of stupidity.
On an Asmongold video, can't remember if it was on the clips channel or main channel, there was a chat message he read that proposed the theory that the video game that was developed to truly show off the PS5 Pro's enhancements was Condord and they had to pull it from the PS5 Pro showcase due to how much of a disaster it was.
Can't say if that's true or not, but imagine how hilarious that it would be if that's true. It does sound like a very likely theory and one that've I've accepted as my headcanon.

I hate how companies like going back and forth, one moment they are making fun of their competitor, kind of like how Samsung did when they did all those campaigns, making fun of Apple because they removed the Aux port from their phones, and how Apple also stop including chargers in the new phone boxes, but then about a year or 2 later Samsung was super hypocritical, because their new phones also removed the aux port and stopped including the chargers too. Its why I do not find it surprising that after Sony made fun of Microsoft, they are pretty much going to do what Microsoft was going to do originally...

Sorry but i'm a little confused about what you said about hoyo. Because out off many mobile game that i played they are one of many that listen to feed back from player (been playing their games since HI3 and now zzz). Sure some feedback not immediately implemented the next patch, but they still implemented in the future patch (Star rail especially since it's making many people say "Genshin could not" because that game have many feature that genshin don't have at the time and people been asking for ages). Again i'm not trying to start an argument, i'm just a little confused and curious because as some one that have been playing their game since a long time, they're know for listening the player feedback to improve their game.
Honestly, all social media platforms are toxic cesspools that leave me feeling borderline misanthropic and Reddit is unfortunately the *least* toxic of them(as pathetic as that is to say). As for PS5 Pro, it's literally just a more expensive PS5 Digital Deluxe. Anyone who wants to buy that (and the disk drive) is just looking to burn money. And it's a damn shame to see some consumers willing to accomodate Sony's greed by buying this console because it's just going to encourage them to take further advantage of gamers in the long term.
But, Hoyo did listen to fans about Genshin? They added many quality of life features with the Natlan release. Not sure about Star Rail since I don't play it.

Literally the ONLY reason they would pull a stunt like this that I can think of is that they just assumed people would pay any price for their product.
