It’s literally my favorite thing about living here.
If I have to brave this insane heat…at least i get to meet cool authors frequently.
And they have a bar at one of their locations! 😍

I just added Fire Keeper's Daughter to my TBR list. I love that it was recommended by someone so dear to me.

Ooooohhhhhhh, you lucky duck! You got to see Angeline Boulley!! I loved FIREKEEPER’S DAUGHTER, and loved even more WARRIOR GIRL UNEARTHED! Then you pull out The Deep by Rivers Solomon, which is a 6 star read for me. Only 6:15 in and you’ve already got me totally hooked 🪝🎣

I’m glad you enjoyed Angeline’s 2nd book. People always compare it to her first (obviously) & most say they like the first book best but the second one isn’t bad at all.
Maybe I should have bought a copy? 🤔
      OH WELL!
I am so excited to read The Deep! I have been looking for this second hand copy for sooo long now!!

Fun vlog. I love Changing Hands bookstore. I’ve only visited it once on a roadtrip earlier this year, but now that I know about it, anytime I’m in the Phoenix area I’ll be stopping by it.
I read When The Reckoning Comes back when it first released. I remember liking it and thought the concept was good. I’m a bit fuzzy on the details now since it’s been 3ish years, but I remember feeling like the ending could’ve been a bit better.
Angeline Boulley! Firekeeper’s Daughter is so good! Warrior Girl Unearthed wasn’t bad, but definitely not as engrossing. It does talk about an interesting and important topic though.
The once and future witches was a 5 star for me and by far the best Harrow I’ve read. The rest of her books have been 3 stars although I’ve yet to read A Thousand Doors of January.
The Wicked Deep and Wilderness of Stars are on my TBR this month as I’m reading the books that have been on my shelf the longest. 😅
    Rivers Solomon is brilliant.
James ended up being so good. Probably will be in in my best reads of the year.
Ugh. I hated The Wishing Game so much. IMO, it’s overly simplistic with no real consequence. I couldn’t even enjoy it as a light fuzzy read because the writing bugged me so much. I am clearly the outlier in opinion though as so many people loved it.
Liked the Parable of The Sower. Next weekend, I’m actually going to Pasadena to visit a bookstore called Octavia’s Bookshelf which was named in honor of Octavia Butler. Kindred definitely is much better.
Bummer to hear that you didn’t enjoy Razorblade Tears. I really enjoyed it as well as All The Sinners Bleed.
Ooh Changeling is so good! One of my favorites. I hope you get to it eventually.
On your discussion of small town racism, I lived in a small town in Kansas in 2011 with my ex husband who is Mexican/Honduran. I was shocked at how much racism was targeted at him and/or our relationship. It definitely wasn’t every single white person, but it was sadly common.
Good wrap/vlog/reviews. Looking forward to seeing what you pick up next. Sorry for the massively long comment. 😅

I absolutely LOVE your super long messages! 💛
Our reading tastes seem to be VERYYY similar which is awesome.
You've gotten me even more excited to pick up The Once and Future Witches!! I am in the mood for a witchy read! I haven't heard much about it aside from Sydney (@SydBookWorrom) and obviously I trust your opinions! 😆
James being a possible best of the year?!
I am excited to reread Huck Finn and then pick that one up. I remember liking Huck Finn when I read it in high school but honestly don't remember much about the plot. That vlog should be great then!! haha
The way you explained your feelings toward The Wishing Game is exacly how I felt about The Midnight Library by Matt Haig.
We will see where my feelings fall on The Wishing Game....😬
Unfortunately, overt racism is still prevalent in certain parts of our country. Just sad.

@@scottieshereereads I hated The Midnight Library too. 😅 I couldn’t stand how overly simplified the portrayal of depression was. I have a feeling that if you didn’t like The Midnight Library, you probably won’t like The Wishing Game either.

Thoroughly enjoyed your July Noir vlog! I wanted to participate but only read one book, which was What We Leave Behind by Wanda Morris.
I keep starting and restarting with Violin Conspiracy because I can not deal with his mother and his encounters with white people. It gets me mad every single time, lol. And there doesn't seem to be moments of relief or reprieve. But I want to finish it because I grew up as a violinist who played in predominately Black orchestras throughout my school years. So it is wonderful to read a book from and about a Black man violinist since I grew up with Black boys who are now Black men that continue to play string instruments. I'll try again for Blackoween in October and hopefully finish it, lol.

I'm SO glad there's someone out there that feels the same way I do about the consistent terrible encounters with every single white person in that book.
That's so cool that you were able to play in predominately Black orchestras.
I, unfortunately, never had that experience when I played the flute.
Honestly, it was quite the opposite! I would be one of only a few Black musicians.
What I would have given to have a predominately Black ensemble to play with!!
If you do finish The Violin Conspiracy, I would be very intrigued to know your final thoughts.
Also, do you have any other books you suggest that feature Black musicians?!
I am on the hunt! :)
