- Lumber prices are extremely high! My wife and I and our four daughters live off-grid on 80 acres in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We have access to lots of trees. I wanted to see for myself how a cheaper entry-level sawmill works. So Jason from Homesteading Northern Michigan on RUclips invited me over to show me how to run his Woodland Mills HM122. My very first time using a mill. I thought it would be a good idea to video it and share with you. Enjoy!

I just wanted to take a second to pop a quick comment in here and tell you ... I thought it was super cool you stuffed some bucks up under that fine fella's shed eaves. I appreciate it because it was the right thing to do but I appreciate it more because you did that knowing he might not see it until well after you were gone. Smooth man. Super smoooooooth.
Awesome.. 👍 hey Jason..👊
Hey Ron! Your last video wouldn’t let me comment! But anyway have a good one man!

I’m stealing some design features from the log cradle/ clamp system. So I thank you!
I’ve got a chainsaw mill. Made from a 10 hp lawn mower engine and 32” bar and chain. It’s been almost done for five years lol...
Your videos are always honest and well done.
Awesome David! That would be nice to get that done!
It's so awesome you got to play with Jason's mill a bit. Now you will have a better idea of the one you want. Jason's a great friend! ☮-Kirsten

You’re welcome.
I don't know why it is, but I love watching people mill lumber on a home sawmill. Great video, Chad. So sorry about your breakdown on the bridge, of all places!
Thank you Cheryl ! The breakdown was ok besides starving until Jason got there with food and coffee! The rest was great! 😂
Next video title: Man makes daughters mill lumber for house"
Yep! 😂
Lmao 😂👌
Awesome how some of my favorite utubers are connected and help each other out !
Hey, Chad...
I could watch this all day.
Except the part where you spun a bearing crossing the big bridge!
That's such a cool operation with the mill that Jason has going there.
I hope you can build some more dreams with your own mill set-up.
Take care, thanks for the great content...
Thank you Dave! I called Woodland Mills and if I ordered one today that wouldn’t get it till September! I’m going to hold of for now and research other options. Not needing one too bad at the moment. And besides, I know a guy with one that could mill for me! 😆 You have a great night man!

Holy shart Chad you do have a mill saw blade snapper old buddy !!! Good fur you !!! I'm asleep at the wheel,a day late and a dollar short. I'll be quiet now and let you do your thang. Awesome man I am so happy for you !!!
That’s my buddies mill.. lol
So cool you got a buddy close by with one! Before we got our first sawmill that's kinda what we did. In time we ended up owning & operating a couple wood-mizers & a Lucas swing mill. I cut lumber for a living for several years. Cut hundreds of thousands of board feet.🤙👊
Oh nice!! Man nows the time to be making lumber!
@@9252LIFE prices are gonna crash HARD in the not so distant future. But yeah, I'm getting another mill for the homestead at some point 👍
Watching in California 🤩
Keep it up!!
Your vlog it’s getting better and better!..
Thank you !
Awesome video. Jason’s channel is great. He’s a hands on get it done bloke🍺🍺
Yes he is!
Ok...just had to do it...subscribed! This was a great video! I can only imagine those beautiful young ladies running a sawmill like this and making some serious 💰💰💰! And just look at all that sawdust for your "necessary building"! Win Win! You know you just have to go get one!! Great video!👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸👍👍
Thank you Jim! Yeah our girls would be running it in no time! I called the company and they’re 4 months out. I decided not to pull the trigger just yet. Only because it will be too close to winter before I could get it. Probably wait for late winter to order one. Meanwhile keep an eye out on a good used one.
Wish I had friends and family that were interested and helpful.
You guys are the only people to mention water on a sawmill. Nice video.
That’s probably why I never knew that! 😆
Next- a planner and jointer, those slabs make good critter barns to👍
You must not of seen my chicken coop build video? Yeah those slabs are awesome!
You both rock.

Did you like it enough to want your own mill now? Time to call Dave at Cheap wheels, I see a few episodes he could make involving your truck. Thanks for sharing.
I’ve been wanting one for a while now. Just haven’t used one until now to see if I even like it. And yes I loved it! Yeah Cheap Wheels would have a hard time keepin all my junk in the road! 😂
Cool toy. Jake has been wanting one for a long time.
It is pretty awesome!
Three things in this video I need: 1) mill for lumber, 2) tractor to move tree trunks around, 3) 4x4 truck to haul the lumber I cut and anything else I need to haul. Thanks for the video! Got me jealous. In a good way, not hating you for anything. You inspire me with your attitude and willingness to work! 👍👏
Thank you Mike! Don’t be jealous. I don’t have a mill yet! 😆
@@9252LIFEI hope you get one and enjoy it!

Yeah it is much better than our shack we live in now! 😆
@@9252LIFE hey I lost my home due to fire! I lived in a old RV for the longest and then because I owned the land I put one of those rent to own sheds with the porch out front! I paid it off slowly and in the mean time I rebuilt myself! I insulated it ran Romex put a box in it a tankless on demand water heater put dry wall in it! Cabinets and countertop sink and a combo that room had the toilet in the shower together! I made my bed with 2x4s and rope! My mat was two blankets sewn together and stuffed with hay! I had a old Farmall super c and a 1966 f350 4x4 flat bed only ones to survive the fire my truck got burned in the attached garage! The tractor and old truck were out in the field under a pole barn! I couldn't afford to keep my job due to no breaks on the truck and I worked for a construction company that traveled a lot! So I stayed out the season and my boss was cool with that! I had enough saved up and enough timber to run my frick saw mill to rebuild me a house while I stayed in the mini cabin! I had enough seed to plant more than a acre I hunt fished and trapped in the meantime! I lived deep in the mountains! So no help no resources to get help! I farmed and I rebuilt buy winter came I had a cellar full of food already and a fresh water spring out back! I survived and did well I didn't even buy gas for the truck! Look up woodgassifier truck! The tractor I did though! I drove the old Ford carefully slowly in low gear as the rear wheel cylinders were leaking I didn't have much breaks! I would haul food hardware and other supplies back up the mountain checking my trout lines and traps along the way!
Thanks to you... RUclips showed me this video.
looked at your Sawmill video and now I'm here!!!!
Thinking of buying a Woodland sawmill but don't know if I'll pay it back with the logs I would cut on my property!
80 000 square feet of wood but don't know if I would save 8000$ doing my logs! (4000$ for the mill + time!!!)
BUT it's calling me big time!!!
Good people are the salt of the earth. One should endeavor to be considered one of the "good" guys. Cool video.
Thank you
Dang Son, don't want that blade jumping off and showing you any appreciation.
No kidding!
Oh man, your truck! That stinks - glad you got it taken care of 👍
Yep she’s kickin ! 😆
That sawmill is sweet! Nice of him to hook you up!
Dodge.... nuff said;) 😘
😂
Thanks guys, a great inspiration for our family channel 😃
Good to hear! Don’t you guys have a new born? I don’t watch too much RUclips but I think I’ve seen one of your videos. Hope you’re all doing well!
Thanks yes we have a new born baby Flame he is 5 months old. Soon we are moving to Mongolia. We got some land there and will be doing an off grid channel there. Will be the only English speaking RUclips channel in Mongolia 😃
@@SimpleWildLiving Flame is an awesome name! ❤️ That sounds like a great adventure you’re goin on! Film EVERYTHING!
We will do 👍 thanks so much! And we look so forward to watching more of you videos. Will add you to a end card on a video 😊

Thanks!
Yasssss. We want a sawmill so bad. My grandpa has one, but he lives pretty far away.
They are an awesome machine!
I've had a 126 for 3 years built a blacksmith shop a tractor shed ,a sawmill shed and lots of small projects . Payed for mill in lumber for blacksmith shop. Its a win solution!!
I called the company and they’re 4 months out. Haven’t pulled the trigger yet.
My Son has a Woodland Mills, and he is happy with it. He cuts boards and sells them for axe throwing tournaments.
Oh nice!

Jason has the best chicken coop castle on the plant.
Yeah he does!
"I'm a professional...bc I'm off grid" 🤣
Lol that’s right!
Lumber mills are worth gold now. . Jason is awesome.
Yeah maybe I don’t need to buy one. I can just have Jason mill all my lumber! 😂
Hey Chad. Great video. Love anything to do with milling. Lumber prices are so high you have to have a mill or know someone that does.We just ordered our mill from Woodland. We ordered the HM126. Can't wait until it arrives. Lot's of projects to do. Have a great day. Later,
I am considering the 126. They are about 4 months out for orders. I think I’m going to wait until late winter to order. Enjoy that mill! Have a great weekend!
@@9252LIFE We figured the 26 would do everything we want and can handle the larger logs. Ordered the track extension as well so we can mill up to 16ft lumber.
@@CreeksideMaplesHomestead Jason said not to order the extensions because it’s just angle iron that you can do yourself and save a ton of money!
@@9252LIFE Thats a good idea for sure. Cheaper to go get good angle rather than buy their extensions.
Great video! Now that's what I would call a chicken coop! wow!
awesome friend
For sure!
Nice job 👍
Thank you!
Slabbing a tree is indeed just like a box of chocolates and truly, you never know what you are going to get.
Very true
i remember way back when , telling you about live edge waste the wood makers had that stuff is what i was talking about ......... sorry bout the wheel bearing hugsssssss
Yeah good stuff!
When you go back and forth on your uneven dirt roslad drag a log perpendicular to the road to sooth it out...Bob from Michigan
Wow you went all out on the mill brother! But that was probably the best move you made, down the road order some pine logs or even aspen bolts and make some good money with these lumber prices, my buddy is doing the same thing on the west end now and ppl are buying fire wood like crazy! Good luck and good job buddy🇺🇸👍
I haven’t bought a mill yet. That was a buddy of mine’s mill. I’ve never used one and wanted to try his out before possibly purchasing one.
@@9252LIFE your hooked aren’t ya?😆

Great vid and he's a great friend to have. Wonder how long before you get a lumber mill? I know priorities. It will happen, you just watch.
Hey that's a handy tool
Gotta get me one!
Great video showing some practical use, thanks for posting! Is that the 7 or 9.5 HP?
7 but an upgrade to the 9.5 would be much better!
Man that’s a sharp hat you’re wearing there!
Best instructional video on the innerweb,,, good job
Thank you Shane
Awesome Chicken Mansion!!! I think I will have to go sub him.
Lol didn't realize he was you fixer helper friend! I already subbed him. I like watching mills and the beautiful boards appear!
Hey Chad, how's it going? I guess better now that the wheel bearing is fixed. With the price of lumber now days, you've saved yourself A LOT of money. I've also been hearing that paint is going up in price also. I won't believe it to I actually see it for myself but that is what I'm hearing. Who needs paint though when you can have the natural look, right? Thanks for another great video. Take care.
I didn’t purchase a mill yet. That was my buddy Jason’s mill.
Gotcha 😉

Love the HB log loader, 10 points... I noticed on the second cut the whole frame was wobbling ??
I noticed it wobbled a bit too but it didn’t make a difference on the cut.
I bought a saw mill last week to build coops like that. I'm going to rip off some of his design. Those were awesome.
Awesome! Have you watched his coop build video?

tell him to lower his idle speed on the mill the ting aling noise is the clutch wearing out prematurely.

Spectrum supply sells Lennox woodmizer blades. My blades are $24 for a bit over a 15' blade. $24 for that small blade is to much.
Hi the ez boardwalk sawmill is a better designed mill if your thinking about buying one! Here is the link this ez has a better blade tension~er in my opinion as the motor slides compared to having a clutch this way you never wear out a clutch.
I’ve never heard of that one? I’ll check it out. Thank you
How does the band blade stay on the pulleys with no edge shoulder at the back of pulleys ?..we run horizontal bandsaws here at work(metal cutting) and they all have shoulders on one side of pulley..no rubber belt on pulley either..just wondering..anyone?
Good question! Jason could tell me.
You compared it to a harbor freight mill? Are they close on price?
I’m not sure

Ok so I have to ask "how in hell did you not feel that bearing going bad starting about 500 miles ago"? I hear mine in the turns LONG before it gets near failure on my Cummins 2500. Otherwise great vid BUT never drag your logs through the dirt and then cut them without washing or debarking or blowing them off. That is unless you enjoy destroying blades. Btw you can buy better blades for much less $ if you shop around a bit guys. I have the Woodland Mills 126 and just love it. The must have tool for any homestead at these lumber prices 👍😎👌
My truck is loud and has mud tires that hum much louder than a wheel bearing. I did however hear it before I got to the bridge and pulled over to inspect and seen it was toast! Tried to make it home.. didn’t happen.. 😆
@@9252LIFE keep an oil can on board with some synthetic motor oil and wet the heck out of it asap in a situation like that. You would be amazed at how much it can help and get you down the road.
