'Bless you, daddy' What a sweetie! Doing glass gem, mini blue and strawberry corn next year. Will do some hand pollination as an experiment. Let's see what happens!
I enjoyed watching it! Your favorites were amazingly beautiful. I think you picked most of them before their colors were fully developed. The husks and kernels should be completely dry.
Hi Dave. Thank you. I just got impatient to harvest the corn. I shall wait longer next year. I have saved the corn from this year and that’s what I will be planting next summer.
@@GrowWithMeUsa Next year don't plant any pure white nor pure yellow kernels. You have too many of them. Every kernel has white or yellow starch. And every kernel has 3 genes for the color layer on top of the starch. Those genes can all be clear and you get only whites or yellows. Or a kernel can have 3 genes for color and they will be very dark. I recommend you plant mostly from the medium colors. You can plant kernels that have 2 genes for color and one gene for clear. and get a medium pink for example. And you can plant some pale colors which have one gene for blue or pink and 2 genes that are clear. Their children will have many white and yellow kernels because they have 2 genes for colorless. You don't need to plant white to get white. Greens are light blue on yellow starch. Orange is 1 or 2 pink genes on yellow starch. You can make your own decision how much yellow starch under-color you want vs. white. I would not plant too many of the very dark kernels unless you want them. Also, pay attention to the beauty of the cob shape. And you might want to pay some attention to plant architecture and earliness of maturity. Choose kernels where the color is clear and not splotchy. It you want the glass gem look, choose kernels that have very hard clear starch and not chalky. I think I have all the colors in my corn, but I would like to receive about 10 of the medium pink kernels off of the two ears you show at last. I would like to see how they inherit. I need long THIN ears in my short season because thin ears dry faster. Can you send me some off of those 2 ears? Thanks! Dave Christensen (406) 930-1663 buckskin@mtintouch.net
Actually, you did a great job of selecting ears from last year. You have the most beautiful cylindrical shaped ears of Glass Gem that I have seen. Where did you get your original seed? Who selected it before you? The lack of color is not because of low selection. You simply planted too many white kernels, as I discuss below. Because your selection of seed stock was so small you will likely soon experience inbreeding depression. You might want to add some new stock to your planting next year. Do not avoid planting from your pale ears. If they are well shaped plant some from them. It would be a shame to lose the work you have done. Simply chose from a variety of pastel and medium colored kernels.
I believe I ordered the original seeds from Amazon. I gave away the light-colored cobs to friends and family during Halloween time as decorations and keep 4-5 good specimens only. I hear your concern about the inbreeding depression as this will be the third year from I will be growing them from the same set and every year I am selecting from fewer and fewer cobs. You shared your deep understanding of genes and seed selection. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge. I am intrigued, are you a scientist? :-) I am interested in learning, if you can point me resources that can get me educated on the subject, I would welcome that. Good chatting with you. That was so much fun opening the corn, like Christmas presents. Your daughter was so helpful and knowledgeable. So beautiful!
Thank you!
Really enjoyed watching. I'm going to plant gem corn this year. What an angel you have with you. Just made my heart so happy.

Hi Dave, I will be happy to send as many seeds as you want. Drop me your address. I did call you few moments ago and left you a message.
Looks like you might be harvesting it a little early
I think you are right. Couldn’t wait any longer.
Can corn be consumed?
Not like regular corn on the cob they say it doesn’t taste good but good for popcorn
Thank you
